Hi, this is in responce to mike bahr's post about the silent man... I remember a long time ago (maybe 6-7 months) someone posted a similar interpretation of the silent man, but to a different story: Oedipus Rex. I found that the similarities in that comparason were done quite well. But then I just read Mike's Interpretation, and I get a similar feeling. Is it me? Or does anyone else remember the other post?

Hello everybody!
I've finally decided to post my "rewiew" of 6:00. I'm not going to take it step by step, mainly because I got Awake on tape and not on CD. Anyway, here are the most interesting things I have to say about 6:00 music.
- After the drum intro there's a cool keyboard section. I think it's just a keyboard, while a friend of mine says he thinks there's a guitar too. What do you think? I find it really interesting, it's quite different from the usual Kevin's style, and it sounds really good because of the notes it contains (C#,D,D#,E,F,G,G#... lots of very near notes)
- One of the most interesting things is the way they play the chorus ("Melody walks through the door...") This part appears at the beginning (before "6:00 on a XMas morning"), and of course when James sings the chorus (in the middle and towards the end). The interesting thing about that is the way MP changes the time under it. The part is in 6/8, but because of the beats on the drums we tend to count it in two-two-two, like it was 3/4. Then MP doubles the tempo, so it becomes a 6/4 (where 1/4 corresponds to the previous 1/8), but he changes the starting note, so the all section is moved of a beat! I mean, instead of 6 6 6 6, we have 1 6 6 6 5 ("simply", he exchanges the bass drum with the snare). In the first chorus, he plays it entirley in 3/4, like the first time. Then, in the second chorus, he plays it in 6/8 (3+3), so we are ready for the new part of the chorus ("But don't cut your losses..."), which is in 6/8 too.
- Apart from this, it's quite a "normal" song, because it doesn't have other tempo changes, and remains in 4/4. But it's one of my favourite songs, I like the solos, and expecially the part from the first chorus to the last verse (I really love the "Inside/Outside" part and the solo after that)
- Finally, one thing I noticed is that the song ends in G#, whereas the whole song is in E. I think that one possible reason is that this ending "prepears" the listener to CIAW, which is in C# (and G# is the 5th grade of C#)
Well, I hope I have managed to explain my opinions, even if it was a bit difficult, and I hope I haven't said any silly things. Come on and post your reviews: analizing the songs is the best way to show DT are great!
Remember JP said: "I like to challenge the listener, because I like to be challenged by the music I listen to"

Has anyone else noticed that Chris Degarmo's guitar in LIVECRIME in very similar the the JP guitar. Both have that weird color thing happening, I think it's pretty cool. I might be mistaken, but are the messages on the JAM w/ the name JP the one and only? Still waiting for Acoustic Draems-I hate this anticipation.
Any word on the new MINISTRY album, It was supposed to be released yesterday, but my local Tower Record didn't have info.

wow, is that not the longest run-on sentence you've ever seen? :) good account of a first-person witnessing of a guitar demi-god, though...
on the subject of the Ronnie Scott's gig - can we get a consensus together on the possibility of ever getting a (good) video of this gig? Andreas (Jerry) mentioned that MTV's version may not be worth getting, but someone else wrote that it may have been taped by another company independently? does this mean that there's a prospect of the video being sold eventually by said company?
along these lines - i remember from way back in april or may that someone (i think mike bahr) mentioned they had a copy of the concert on tape (DAT?). is it feasible that this could be distributed within the 'jam, maybe even in an organized fashion as Kevin's demos were? it would be great to at least get an audio version of this gig, if the possibility of getting a respectable video version is out of the question.
thanks and keep 'jammin...

Mike Bahr, your post about the donkey was hilarious. People here at work have started to wonder if my long hours here are finally taking a toll. (Ryan Skadberg, sys-admin, I know what you mean! :D )
There IS going to be a DT show on the 29th of December at Old Bridge, NJ. I called Birch Hill Niteclub and they confirmed it. Tix are not on sale yet and no word of the opening act (would it rule if FW opened?! ) As Butthead would say, *Heh, heh, we're there....* Hopefully, I will be back from Va. by then (otherwise I still would be making the trip, just a longer one...)

But!, I have yet to receive a response from my question which was:
Does anybody know where the live tracks on ACOS were recorded? Inquiring minds would like to know.
To argue with a post by someone who's name I have forgotten: This list is for opinions, don't get your panties in a wad because I said that I believe that ACOS was a sub-standard production for DT. It's my opinion and of course I'm right! :) That was a joke for those who love to cyber-bicker.
I've seen DT 3 times in Dallas Tx and I'm very dissapointed when I get a boot because it doesn't do them justice. I've always been extremely impressed with my dates with DT. A couple a dissapointments tho:
They didn't play enough off on WDADU and they haven't played Scarred, which BTW is the "most hard, I'm bleeding, I'm screaming, I'm crying and I driving way to fast for saftey's sake in a 55," songs I've have ever heard. UAGM and PMU come close to it, but that's it. And I'll tell you why they haven't played it live my Y-jam friends: Have you really listened to Scarred?
I'm a drummer and I can keep up w/Portnoy in 90% of his time changes and "where did that come from" times sigs, but Scarred is a very complex piece of work to perform live. DT is a complex band, but IMO they got too big for their britches in the studio on that one. Please send me no expletives I've had enough for this month. It's just my opinion.
Underground DT: gotta give my 2 cents on this one.
When I first heard DT (I&W was my first exposure) 3 years ago, one of my first thoughts was; oh I hope these guys don't hit it big and start playing for money and airplay. I believe this was the turning point in Rush's approach to compostion. Moving Pictures was a turning point in their career for mass acceptance. Rush produced many albums after that that I enjoyed immensely <sp> (give me a brake James G.) but after Hold your Fire it seemed that they wanted to keep a 4 minuite time limit on their compositions. What happened to their (90125) "stylistic audacity".
Rush is still a band to be reckoned with in concert, probably the best live show I've seen (been to 3 concerts) except the Stones in '78. But I feel Rush went for the bucks later on in their career. It's hard not to do. As someone stated earlier when bands start their career they don't make a lot of money. They have a hard time paying for transportation to the next city. But I almost forgot about Rush when I purchase I&W. DT filled that musical thirst in me that Rush had ceased to. I like to be challenged otherwise I would listen to country music and feel sorry for myself all the time. :p
If and when DT hits it big I hope they don't forget their roots and stray from their "stylictic audacity.

I guess I'd better step forward on this one. I was the one who originally posted in Screaming in Digital about the similarities between the samples in "Suite Sister Mary" off Operation:Mindcrime and "The Mirror" off Awake.
If you have both CDs, check out 2:19 of Suite Sister Mary, and 2:55 of The Mirror.
The actual sample on Suite Sister Mary is, "What are you doing out in the rain." The Mirror's sample is, "What are you doing." The diction of both samples is almost identical, however the pitch is a little different. Mary's voice sounds deeper than The Mirror sample. The Mirror sample sounds softer. Nothing a pitch shifter couldn't fix (which, incidentally, is how some people think Mary got her singing voice: Geoff Tate's voice, pitch altered).

Hello everyone, it's BABS. I just read a post to the list (I'm a few digests behind) about James LaBrie being a singer for Coney Hatch. Can someone please elaborate a little further on this? I have one of Coney Hatch's albums (the one that had the single on it called "First Time for Everything" and I don't seem to remember him as their singer (I plan on checking this out when I get home tonight). I had the impression that they were a downstate band. Someone please enlighten me!

I'm a bit confused by all the talk on this list recently on selling out. Personally, I do not equate success with selling out. A common misconception (especially amoung the various underground factions of the music industry, or at least those that like to think of themselves as underground) is that bands/artists automatically sell out when they achieve commercial success. I have a different criteria for selling out. To me, only the band can judge whether or not they have sold out. If GWAR were to come out with an all acoustic ballad and it hit #1 on the charts (okay, this is a bit extreme but there is a point to be made here) have they sold out? That depends. If the song expresses a given emotion to the band's satisfaction, and was not made with the intent of making a quick buck, then no, they haven't sold out. People think Metallica sold out because they changed their sound to a more "mainstream" style and consequently made alot of money. Nobody knows if they sold out except Metallica. I personally would love it if DT got huge. I would love to turn on a top 40 radio station and here them play "Surrounded," or "ACOS." It wouldn't make the band any less special to me. If anything, it would make it MORE special because I could have the satisfaction of knowing about the band when they weren't as big. As long as bands make good music, I will support them.
Richie
P.S. A song is copyrighted if some kind of record of it can be produced in a "tangible form." This can be anything from a demo, to sheet music, to a live recording, etc. People will sometimes mail themselves a copy of their song and keep it unopened. That way you have the post-office date. This will just cover your ass if your bring someone or are brought to court. The safest way is to go through Washington and get an "official" copyright, but doing this is not the only way to get one. I'm sure the lawyers and pre-law people on this list will be glad to go into further detail if you ask. (I'm neither).

Believe it! A short post, I promise!!
Just as a note, those Ytsejam t-shirts Jason Giles is selling are FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC. I totally love mine and I wear it to every concert to try and get Dream Theater fans to notice. Those of you who don't own a shirt, order it _today_. You won't be disappointed. Especially with that glow-in-the-dark "Let the light surround you" on the back...
I was asked about my sources for the Acoustic Dreams music, and I'm afraid I cannot comment on that, since my source specifically requested anonymity. So, I'm afraid I can't shed any light on the sources other than to say that the shows I took it from were the following:
* Mulcahy's Awake preview * That acoustic radio show in OK * Bruce's rock show in UK 1/95 * Unplugged in Europe 2/95 * WHJY auction 1994
I would ask that you all _please_ do me a favor by _not_ speculating on the Jam as to who that source could be... basically, I'd like to bury the discussion here and now, if that's alright. Thanks! :)
Saw some commentary on Acoustic Dreams... THANKS BE TO GOD! THEY DON'T THINK IT SUCKS! :)

Hey Matt!
About Bombay Vindaloo on Practicing Musicians III, it's taken from the Marquee gig. No need no worry...it's not a studio recording. If anyone knows who was responsible for that long, drawn-out scream during the tune's intro, let me know. It cracks me up every time I hear it.

I took the time to decifer the SIX seperate samples at the end of Carpe Diem and here's what I came up with.
Sample 1 ---> "It's the most awful thing you'll ever hear" Sample 2 ---> "Were her dearly beloved" (still confused on this quote, help?) Sample 3 ---> "Seize the day" Sample 4 ---> "Something Happened" Sample 5 ---> "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may" Sample 6 ---> "She was killed"
All of this again supports the Mike mother killed in a plane crash, or a women that was loved by many killed in a plane crash.
Think about it, let me know what you have found out on your analization of the section as well.
Maybe, John Nguyen call subtlely say something on Thursday. :)

Hey All,
1. ACoS (duck)-Has anybody thought that maybe when Kevin Moore left the band so did some of the parts of the old ACoS? Since he left in the middle of '94, the band probably wasn't planning on recording ACoS at the time. Sooo, unless Kevin writes out ALL his keyboard parts, or the band knew his parts, maybe they decided that the parts Derek came up with for the old version just didn't fit as well as Kevin's. Actually, maybe they could of contacted him anyway...who knows. Anybody who has experience in a band would probably be able to answer this better than me...
2. To the guy who said there was an ACOS review in Metal Edge, could you type it up?
3. Ben Laussade(sp?), if you're into metallica and megadeth, Queensryche's first EP is actually the most metal influenced. It sounds a lot like Iron Maiden to me. However, most fans (and myself) think Operation:Mindcrime is the best.
4. As a member of the Lexington High School (that's in Ma BTW) radio club, I'm going to have my own radio show. I think you can figure out what I'm going to play...I make a vow to play ALL of ACOS at least once by the end of the year. If it gets a good response then it will definitely get more airplay. It'll probably get more airplay anyways :) Of course all types of Progressive Rock will be played, since it is actually MY show. If the High School students wanna hear something Green Day they can listen at another time. Alllsoooooo...
5. I now have my own webpage...to all those college educated DT fans/Internet surfers with DT pages, what do you use to build your web pages? I found HotDog web editor to be pretty good. Also any general tips for getting people to read my page will be appreciated. You can either email me or post it if you think you can sneak some DT content in there somehow...thanks

Metallica was the first real band that I REALLY got into when I was younger. And I'm one of those new fans who actually started listening to the band because that album got them exposure. That's an advantage of accessible albums such as the black album. Even if the "black" album isn't a total masterpiece, it can get PEOPLE to listen to the music. Long time fans often get pissed off at this because it isn't, "their" band anymore. I get shit all the time. Instead of "Yeah! I've been listening to them for a while and you should really get their old stuff, I think it's a lot better", old fans sometimes give you, "I was listening to them way before anybody, their new stuff sucks!". Fortunately, as you say, mature fans can still appreciate their old stuff. That brings up another point...does anybody here know of a band that did an album very "commercial" sounding, and then went straight out to left field? In other words, making it big and then changing styles. Queensryche's conversion from "Empire" to "Promised Land" seems somewhat like that. I really admire them for that... > >Secondly, the average DT fan is often a person of above-average >intelligence. The only problem that I would like to address is >the blank stares that we all get at the mention of DT, like if your >favorite band is one people have never heard of, you're some sort of >freak or outcast. (Adam Cook could probably tell you about that) >
Yes I could tell you that =]. However the more I observe people around my high school, the more I realize they aren't into music seriously. I'm not sure if it's your intelligence remark, or the fact that they just don't WANT to listen to obviously more serious and intelligent music. I'm sure that to DT fans, music is an important part of our lives, and we listen a lot. However the fans that make multi-platinum bands like Green Day etc. they just want a quick tune, something up beat and exciting. Then something new will come out and they can say Green Day sucks =]. That way they can just flip on the radio, and listen to whatever's there. And whatever's there is what most of the radio stations are playing anyway. That's why DT isn't a band which you can just flip on the radio and listen to while you're jogging, driving, at work, whatever. Their music requires attention. But it's still great to listen to while working anyway...because it takes your mind off the work =]
