    Hey all!

I'm going to keep this one short.

    1) Considering that many of you have expressed an interest in going to the
December 27 DT show at the El 'n Gee in New London, CT, here's an idea.
Would any other jammers be interested in meeting before the show? Sort of a
Ytsejam convention at a local fast food restaurant, or something. I live in
CT and I could look into a meeting place. Just let me know if any of you
    are interested.

    2) To Mike Burstin: Thanks for the tapes!! They rule! My thanks for the
very efficient service. Now I have enough DT to last me until their next
    LP.

    3) Ytsejam t-shirts?

Okay all! Keep listening with open ears and minds! Later!!

Hey, to the guy who posted this poll mentioned above...what is your
"real" address?!?!?! I sent mail to your address posted, but it came
back as undeliverabvle because the site didn't exist. I was kind of
leary anyway, because it had no "@" in it...

You won't get many results if no one can mail you...

Could someone tell me which band it is that Mike likes alot, either
Machine Head or Damn the Machine, I get the names mixed up.

Either way, could you give us a quick idea of what they sound like.

BTW - just got Little Earthquakes by Tori. Wow!!! Great stuff!
I've heard most of it on boots but I really prefer the studio stuff
    with all of the "extras".

    > I beg to differ!! 'Promised Land' is brilliant!!!! 'Hold Your Fire' > (Rush) just may be the best album of all time!!!!

(heh, I knew that would reel in some Rush fan)

    > I know opinions are like bungholes but I have never understood why so > many Rush fans rag on 'Hold Your Fire'! God, I love that album!

First of all, HYF happens to be my favorite Rush album. Granted, it was the first one I got (after hearing TSS on the radio), but having 7 years to digest it and about 6 years to digest everthing else Rush has ever produced, my opinion still stands.

The reason I equate PL with it is that both are probably the most concise, mature works produced by these bands. At the same time, however, both seem to be disparaged by a majority of fans of said bands. If QR put out albums every two years like Rush did, perhaps they might've gotten away with PL; unfortunately, it did alienate a lot of long-time fans > Here is everyone's homework assignment for the night: Listen (really > listen) to 'Hold Your Fire' with headphones and read along with the lyrics. > This will be one of the most powerful and enlightening experiences you > will ever have.... DO THIS NOW!!

Definitely. Lyrically, one of the best albums ever made. Neil has a unique insight into human nature (more or less the theme of the album). "Prime Mover" is one of my favorite Rush tunes ("Open Secrets" kind of blows musically, though) > Jay Peele > For info on INFERNO, E-mail: jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu

All right, folks, I have a challenge. I am probably going to be changing my radio show at some point in life to become a three hour a week show of nothing but progressive rock. I already own all the Rush releases, all the Dream Theater releases, Kansas's best of CD, a few styx Cds, and ELP best of CD, the Yes box set, Fragile, Close to the Edge, 90125, Yessongs, Big generator, Union, Talk, Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe, and an Evening of Yes music plus, ... the list goes on and on. I also own several discs from Fates Warning. And Queen's Riche's Empire. What else do I need? Reply to s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu.

<<Does anybody know where the live tracks on ACOS were recorded? Inquiring minds would like to know.>>

Well, if I am not mistaken does the inlay say that it was recorded live at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London January 31 of '95. It says it under "Uncovered" on the group picture.

<<Anybody know if the Malibu show is going to be 21+ or 18+? Please let me know ASAP if you know. Thanks!>>

Hello all, Recently someone made a comment that perhaps DT did not include "Scarred" in the Awake tour set because it was too complex to perform live. Okay, it's a hard song, but COME ON!! THIS IS DREAM THEATER!! These guys are monsters--there are none higher. I mean look at Myung from a bass players perspective. He taps better than Billy Sheehan, he does Claypool better than Les, and he plays fingerstyle better than Steve Harris. Not only that, but he can write both musically and lyrically. Sure, they might have had to take a little extra time to figure it out, but DT can play whatever they want. Sometimes I get scared listening to DT. It's not beyond the imagination that someone would be able to physically write or play some of the things they play. The scary part is that they know (in music theory terms) what they are writing, why they are writing it, and know exactly what they are doing. That's scary! One last thing. There has been a little discussion of songs getting shorter. I think most bands who start out "long-winded" seem to do this. I think it is just a logical progression, a part of maturing. Besides, no one can claim that PMU, or Lie is a bad song. They rock. I think DT will always try and put at least one long one on per album. I think they enjoy shredding a lot. Sorry for the long one. Hope you enjoyed it. Anyone have a smoke?

I just had a really cool experience, and I thought I would share ......

Walking home from watching the Thursday night lineup, I stopped at the local convenience store to pick up a pack of cigarettes. I get in the store and I hear what seems to be the beginning of LLB/FFF, so I ask the guy behind the counter what radio station he is listening to, and he tells me it is the other guy who is working there's tape. He say he just went outside, he'll know. So, of course, I go out and say to the guy, is that Dream Theater?? And he goes, yeah, they're one of my favorite bands. I was psyched. So this guy and I are chatting for a bit and he goes, I was over in England a few months ago and a friend of mine had won tickets to this little show where they did all these covers, and then I saw them the next night doing their regular show. I was saying to myself, "HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!! This guy went to Ronnie Scott's!!!!" So we talked for a little bit more and he said he would give me some blanks so I could copy him some of the live shows I have as well as WDADU.

Well, just wanted to share. Always happy when I meet another fan.

    :)

Hello all, it is currently 2:30 am or something like that and I just got back from a post-party for Mike Portnoy's drum clinic. He wasn't at the party, but he will be in the local drum shop (Wichita, KS) tomorrow to sign autographs. On behalf of Mike Bahr, I gave Mike Portnoy his complimentary copies of Acoustic Dreams (the surrounding drummers were all very jealous that Mike and I stood around and talked about shit for about 5+ minutes!!). Anyway, he constantly reminded me to thank Mike Bahr for his wonderful efforts! Well, shouldn't we all?!?! :) Now, I am conveying a message to you, THE YTSEJAM, from Mike Portnoy personally: any ytsejammers coming to see future drum clinics, please print out recent ytsejam postings for him to read. His words: "I don't have a computer I can take on the road, so I never get to read that many posts, if any at all..." So guys, do him a favor and print some jams out for him so he can read them. I am going to do just that right after I finish this post so Mike can read the last three JAMS tomorrow. Other things I learned from Mike during our conversation: 1) John Petrucci's video is DONE and will be released sometime before Christmas!! Fucking awesome!!! The best part: the rest of the band will also be featured (I believe with "cameo" appearance/performances) in that video!! SWWEEEEEET!

    2) John Petrucci's twins are due in about two weeks. Congrats are in order very soon (maybe my daughter Olivia will someday play on the jungle jim with Petrucci juniors :) !!!)

    3) Mike will be completing an instructional video for Japan sometime this year and to be released in Japan early next year. Then around the time of the new album :) he will make another one for those in the STates.

    4) Kevin Moore has just shaved his head!!

Well, there you have it, the latest, greatest news direct from the band itself!!! More after tomorrow's visit!!!

DREAM THEATER: "ACOUSTIC DREAMS" Information and Update Current to 10/13/1995

NOTE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com

Hi all! This is the latest information on Acoustic Dreams, the new LIMITED EDITION Dream Theater CD I have produced. It is a numbered, hand-initialed limited print just like Subconscious was.

QUICK UPDATE: The CDs are IN and SHIPPING! They look GREAT and I hope you will all thoroughly enjoy them. I have shipped over 150.

============================================================================ DISCLAIMER: Acoustic Dreams falls into a grey area of law as an uncopyrighted recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA, it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such. This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting nothing for this. ============================================================================

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What is Acoustic Dreams? 2. What is the release schedule? 3. How can I get my own copy of Acoustic Dreams? 4. Orders received. ============================================================================

    1. What is Acoustic Dreams?

Hi all! Allow me to introduce myself, if you aren't familiar with me yet. I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special-edition CDs. I noticed a lot of the mass-manufactured bootleg offerings were spiralling quite high in price and yet offered little for the die-hard fan, and I concocted a scheme by which I could make around minimum wage by producing CDs on my own, CDs that would fill the demand for REAL rarities and special songs, unreleased items, live shows, and the like.

Basically, since no CD plant will print them for me, I have to rent studio and equipment time and do it myself. So far, it's working. :)

Fortunately, and for this I am very relieved, my Subconscious CD has been incredibly well-received by the net community, especially the Ytsejam mailing list. I just do what I can do and leave the rest up to God, and I guess the Almighty isn't disappointing you folks. People from all walks of life, all countries of the world, both sexes, all races, and all religions have joined in on the Subconscious and Cygnus projects, and I am very happy to have you all along for the ride. I'll keep making CDs as long as you folks are willing to keep buying them. Thanks so _very_ much... :)

And now, I have Acoustic Dreams on tap.

Well, this is the current CD I've made, also known as Dream Theater Unplugged. We were given a VERY high-quality soundboard tape of DT's recent Unplugged performance in Europe, and it can only be fully expressed in the form of a CD. Trust me. :) I am fervently hoping that the finished product is well-liked.

Acoustic Dreams 1. Another Day 2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream 3. Wait For Sleep 4. The Silent Man 5. Lie (boogie version) 6. Tears (Rush cover) 7. O Holy Night

Electric Extras 8. Perfect Strangers (with Bruce Dickinson on vocals) 9. 6:00 (performed in session with a much better mix) 10. Caught In A Web (another better performance)

Bonus Tracks (acoustic) 11. Voices (just a small part of it was all there was) acoustic 12. Bad (U2 cover) acoustic

I hope that once you've heard it, you will, like me, have your breath taken away by the beauty of the acoustic tracks and the clarity and sharpness of the electric mixes.

    2. What is the release schedule?

Here is the current schedule of releases as I see it (all dates estimated):

NOW - Rush: "Cygnus" released/shipping NOW - Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams" released/shipping 10/30/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" ordering begins 12/15/1995 - Dream Theater: "Antiquities" ordering begins 12/25/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" released/shipping 01/01/1996 - Dream Theater: "Scenes From a Memory" ordering begins 01/30/1996 - Dream Theater: "Antiquities" released/shipping 03/17/1996 - Dream Theater: "Scenes From a Memory" ordering begins 02/--/1996 - Public Affection: "Death of a Dictionary", details TBA 03/--/1996 - Rush: To be announced 04/--/1996 - Live or Type O-Negative: To be announced 05/--/1996 - Dream Theater: To be announced

Here are a few descriptions to keep your curiosity satiated :)

Dream Theater "Subconscious" Released 04/03/1995 - Limited Edition - 500 copies - sold out Contained Dream Theater rarities including A Change of Seasons. All copies were hand initialed/numbered in gold for authenticity. Rush "Cygnus" Released 08/14/1995 - Limited Edition - 1000 copies - still available Contains a rare soundboard show from the Hemispheres tour. Dream Theater "Acoustic Dreams" Released 09/30/1995 - Limited Edition of 500 copies - still available Each copy is hand signed/numbered in silver for authenticity. Contains beautiful unplugged performances. Dream Theater "When Dream and Today Unite" To be released 12/25/1995 - Limited print of either 500 or 1000. Contains the songs from Dream and Day only with James LaBrie on vocals. Collected from MANY sources and optimized for quality. Some of these still need quality boosts. (Light Fuse, STS...) Dream Theater "Antiquities" Details TBA - Limited print of either 500 or 1000. Each copy will be hand signed/numbered for authenticity. Will contain vocalist auditions, demos, errata, outtakes, unfinished works, unreleased tracks, and the like. Dream Theater "Scenes From a Memory" Details TBA - Limited print of 500 copies. Each copy will be hand signed/numbered for authenticity. This could wind up being any of four or five different shows or song collections, as there are a few soundboard tapes I'm working on to try and get a good sound out of them. Public Affection "The Death of a Dictionary" Details TBA - Unlimited print Is actually +Live+'s little-known first album, released in 1989, two years before their 1991 breakthrough Mental Jewelry. Demand for this one is skyrocketing, and the Jam gets first shot at it.

The following are all "Work in Progress" releases... Rush other titles I'm considering (for any of the given shows): Land's Edge, Storm World, Lifeforce, Arena of the Ancients... Rush "A Symptom of Life" - from 12/20/81 2nd gen soundboard Contains a LOT of neat stuff. a LOT. But very long... 2 CD set? Rush "Concordant Crossroads" - from 3/24/81 audience MASTER in stereo This one has unbelievable good sound quality. It's a tossup whether to take this or Symptom, since both are so good but so similar. Rush "Sleight of Mind" - from a remastered 6/25/75 Toronto This tour has been very underrepresented in available material, so who knows, if S.H.'s cleanup efforts turn out good... +Live+ "Disenchanting Discourse" - from a 10/25/94 audience MASTER in stereo It might be released, it might not, depending on many things. If you would like to see it released, please let me know and let as many people know as you can. I tend to find ways to release things when I find an overwhelming demand for them. :) I also have an audience DAT from 8/8/95, which is pretty damn good. I may synthesize the two shows to get all the "Rare" songs onto the CD. (Freaks, Supernatural, Breakin' Up, Jewelry songs, etc.) Type O-Negative "Deathgrip" - from a 5/30/94 audience MASTER in stereo A great setlist and decent sound. Only my worries about how many copies I can sell prevent this. I can't undertake anything less than a potential sellout project or I risk going under. Again, if this is a title you'd like to see, you can make it happen. All I need is a lot of interest, and away we go! So far I've had a few positive replies... much much more are needed though. Dream Theater... oh who knows, there's so much good stuff. Possible shows: Osaka soundboard from late 1992 Hamburg soundboard from spring 1993 various excellent DATs recorded in Texas

    3. How can I order a copy of Acoustic Dreams?

As stated before, I'm already shipping the CDs by and by. I ship orders in the order I received your checks, so those of you who sent your mail around 8/15 when ordering began, those will be the first CDs out the door. I usually get a couple dozen a day into the mail.

Feel free to e-mail me to reserve a copy for you, so that your mail will have a copy allocated to it already (and not be a victim of "no-more- disc-syndrome"). I've still got more available.

The numbering, excepting special requests when possible, will fill in the order I receive the mail orders. It's only fair after all. I'll reserve a copy for someone over e-mail, but if thirty people get their orders in before he or she does, it's not fair for me to still hold copy #014 or whatever. You all get the idea... these decisions are just in the effort to make it fair for all.

Please, I stress to all of you, don't miss this if you missed Subconscious. It really does pain me to have to tell a fellow DT fan that there simply aren't any more Sub discs to be had, especially because I would be MORE than glad to sell one if I had it.

Blanks, materials, studio time, etc is cheaper per unit for a production line of 1000 than for 500, which is why Cygnus was cheaper for the Ytsejammers. Acoustic Dreams, alas, must remain $25. I was hoping to bring it down to $21 or $20 but that wouldn't be cost effective. I think I may be able to do that for the Public Affection CD, however.

Things are pretty simple from here. Send along a money order for $25 bucks to my address, being sure to include a note with your name, the address to ship to, your email address, and WHICH CD you're ordering (after all, Cygnus is still in ordering) and HOW MANY you're ordering. As before, international customers may use whatever means of payment is most convenient for them, though I stress that sending cash is risky and should not be a first option, but a backup plan. :) CHECKS: I don't really mind them, but in the effort to be seen as a serious and responsible net merchant, I always recommend the traceable-both-ways Money Order as a preferred form of payment. So while checks are perfectly OK, they may or may not be the option you choose to take.

The address and so on is me at:

Mike Bahr - Acoustic Dreams 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224

My home telephone number, available as a courtesy to you, is 1-602-777-0501. I am usually not home on weekends (band practice) so try during the week, between 6pm and 11pm pacific time, for best results. Also, please use discretion when handling this number, as it is, after all, my own home phone, and I will be very confused if a stranger calls at 3:00 AM. :) I trust you Jammers to be cool about it, as you always have in the past. Also... watch your time zones! I had one fellow calling at 6:00 AM. Owch!

    4. Orders received.

This is NOT "reservations"... it's paid-for orders. If you have a reservation, it's still valid, trust me. :) These are just the numbers that are filled. Also there are a handful of "saved numbers" in there.

"I understand your marraige was terminated by death, correct, Mrs. Smith?" "Yes, councillor." "And by whose death was it terminated, yours or your husband's?" - from an actual transcript from Superior Court of Florida NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY: RUSH - CYGNUS UPDATE for 10/13/1995

NOTICE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com NOTE: I have sent out ALL CDS ordered through TODAY! If you mailed it and I have received your mail, your CD is going, going, gone! On its way to you. So guessing approximately, anything sent up until Monday is probably enroute to you. Also, a scant few CDs turn up lost or delayed from time to time, I will endeavor to solve that problem ASAP if you let me know!

Hi all! It's time to update y'all on the CD project. I have finally almost run completely out of the Rush Cygnus CD, with an incredible sound board show from the mystical Hemispheres tour, on it. I'm still taking orders for the remaining copies... if you like, you can email a reservation before you send your check or MO. Here's the info:

Rush "CYGNUS" Recorded at: TCC Arena (Convention Center Arena) Location: Tucson, Arizona Date: November 20, 1978 Source: 2nd gen of original soundboard reel, transferred to 48kHz DAT and mastered to CD Quality: See notes below.

Track Listing: Anthem A Passage to Bangkok By-Tor & the Snow Dog I. At the Tobes of Hades II. Across the Styx III. Of the Battle Xanadu Something for Nothing The Trees Cygnus X-1 Book One: The Voyage Cygnus X-1 Book Two: Hemispheres I. Prelude II. Apollo III. Dionysus IV. Armageddon V. Cygnus VI. The Sphere Circumstances A Farewell to Kings

    Running time 72:52

I did a pre-order project like this for the Dream Theater mailing list a few months back and it worked out very, very well. Any of you who want a reference or voucher for me, direct your question at any DT fan who is on the Ytsejam list, and I'll let their judgment be the Word.

    How to order:

(PLEASE ALLOW 3 to 4 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY.) -A lot of you might have forgotten about this. Since I'm caught up to today's orders for mailing, it's not likely to take quite this long anymore.

Send a cashier's check or money order (made out to me) to: Michael Bahr Limelight Music 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224

Note: I'm just a humble fan with a project going, not a store or CD warehouse... the dealers and mailorder places can give way better prices on other common boots so I don't have or sell any of them. Limelight is what I put on my business license so that I could pay sales tax, thus nobody would ask how I was getting all this money to deposit and why I'd dump thousands at a time into CD production. :)

The price is as follows: $25 US - base free - postage within the USA $1 - postage to Canada $2 - postage to anywhere else

So it would cost $25 to send it to Humble, Texas... $26 to send it to Lakeside Park... and $27 to Geleen, Holland.

There are around 30 copies left... get 'em while they exist! :)

A note on quality. It has come to my attention that a lot of people were expecting quality comparable to Rush's live releases (ATWAS, ESL, ASOH) or comparable live albums of the 1970s. No bootleg can compare to these. Even the best of them, Rush's Oakland '92 performance, a digital soundboard, sounds flat and hollow compared to the three live albums. Cygnus is no exception to this: it does _not_ measure up to the three live albums. But!! I will stake this claim here and now and defend it until the day I die: The sound quality of Cygnus is superior to 99% of all Rush bootleg recordings. Since I own over 1000 Rush shows on tape, I can make this claim with some degree of accuracy. :) It's a legit soundboard taken on an analog reel, manually, in 1978. Those factors weigh in when considering the quality. There are also three dropouts on the master tape that I cleaned up as best I could, usually by fading into them. Be aware of these things when you order... so far people have usually been happy with it (all the boot collectors are having a field day with the comparable quality) but those who were expecting quality like that of the 3 live albums have been disappointed, every single one of them. And that's no fun.

But what it all boils down to is this: this is a must-have for collectors of Rush boots, and anyone who liked the AFTK and Hemispheres albums and was, like myself, disappointed not to see some of these songs on the live albums OR on other boots like St. Louis and Pinkpop.

Now then, back to ordering via cashier's check or MO.

Why use a cashier's check or MO? Besides the fact that they can't bounce, they are traceable both ways. You know that if you don't eventually get a CD or a refund, I'll be in deep shit. :) It's really the safest way to buy, as I myself have been burned in net dealings before, I do my best to alleviate those fears where my projects are concerned. Actually, I don't mind personal checks really... I just recommend the MO or CC because it leaves that paper trail and is totally safe, and if I _didn't_ recommend MO or CC, you'd all have reason to believe it was a scam of some sort. So while a personal check is OK with me, understand that a MO/CC is the best way to buy.

PLEASE! When you send the money order, TELL ME that you're ordering the Cygnus CD. Most of you are already doing this, I just wanted to make sure you all knew, as I am still working on Acoustic Dreams, as well as taking the early pre-orders for the next Dream Theater CD. Also, be sure to include your email address. It's quite hard to get ahold of you if something goes awry, without it. :)

A note on the CD LABEL: It does not say the word "Rush" anywhere on it but all the songs are labelled correctly (Anthem, The Trees, Hemispheres, etc.) and it says "Cygnus" rather prominently. Dont let this nuance of labelling throw you off. A lot of you are already familiar with this, but before the Italian Cd companies started legally making boots in 1991, all boots produced in the USA could not bear the band's name on their labels. Look at Rush boots like "Through any Window" and "Nassau '82".. on the record labels they have fake band names and song names. I just put the real song names and "Cygnus" and left Rush off, since I didn't want to complicate things any more than they already were. It _IS_ the Rush show from 11/20/78 and it is already well known here on the net, if a bit scarce.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me or call me at (602) 777-0501, between the hours of 6pm and 11pm Pacific time. I'm sorry that I don't have an answering machine (as this is my home line, it's mainly available to all of you as a courtesy) but if I'm there, we'll chat. I do have classes these days so I may or may not be there. I do have work and school like the rest of you, after all. I *WILL* answer it if I'm there, that much I will definitely promise you. If you miss me entirely and want *me* to call *you*, I will do so if you leave your number in email. Please understand that it will probably be brief as I'm a starving student with a phone bill. :)

    Thanks all! -Mike Bahr, durnik@indirect.com
