    Hey there, Jammers!

I've finally figured out how to post on the jam, so I just thought
I'd write some random thoughts of mine. Hope you all don't mind.

    1) Where can I get one of those Ytsejam t-shirts I've been reading about?
They sound cool! And they glow?!? Tell me more! Details!

    2) I'm SO psyched I've found the jam. At home, my friends love DT, but here
at school, the "hot bands" are Phish, Blues Traveller and Dave Matthews.
It's such a coincidence that about 2000 people at my school have the EXACT
same taste in music:) (Sure, I'm bitter).

    3) I'm a guitarist who played prog and other rock for about 6 years and now
I'm playing a lot of jazz as well. DT is definately one of the most
jazz-like bands out there. Although the sound is quite different, their
ability to improvise in concert is jazz-like in attitude, not to mention,
being damn cool to watch live.

    4) Okay, this is getting a bit long now. Shit, even I'm getting a little
bored. Just don't flame me for writing so much:)
    Keep jammin' all!

    Zach,

I beg to differ!! 'Promised Land' is brilliant!!!! 'Hold Your Fire'
(Rush) just may be the best album of all time!!!!
I know opinions are like bungholes but I have never understood why so
many Rush fans rag on 'Hold Your Fire'! God, I love that album!

Here is everyone's homework assignment for the night: Listen (really
listen) to 'Hold Your Fire' with headphones and read along with the lyrics.
This will be one of the most powerful and enlightening experiences you
will ever have.... DO THIS NOW!!

    Dee,

I liked your post. You and I discovered DT in 1989 the same way (by
looking in the credits of 'Perfect Symmetry').
Although I understand where you are coming from (I was also annoyed by
several idiots at the QR show who only responded to 'Silent Lucidity' and
'Empire'), I have seen other people who begin to like a band after
hearing the "popular" stuff and turn into true fans eventually.
The more the merrier (album sales help the band).

Anyway, I played the entire ACOS album (except for the Elton stuff) last
week on my radio show 'Abstract Images'. This is not a whimpy college
show with an audience of 5 geeks.... The show is broadcasted over the
preview guide (free radio on the T.V.). Everyone who has cable in
Jacksonville, FL and surrounding areas gets my music show every Thur. night.
Trey has heard my show (hey Trey, call me and request DT - It's your duty :)

Although I'd love to, i'm not allowed to play really heavy stuff (Slayer,
Fear Factory, etc.) but I do get away with a lot of my favorite stuff
such as QR, DT, FW, and INFERNO (shameless self promotion - but it seems
to work - i've sold many tapes this way).

Hi all! Just a quick post, sorry about my longer ones earlier. I
guess I just let information pile up (ever the procrastinator I).

    1. Thanks to ALL of you for those great offers to come on out to your
dwellings for the December shows!! If I can afford the airfare, I think I
might as well make the trip. That means the only question is which of you
to stay with. As a guest, it's etiquette incumbent upon me to
inconvenience you as very little as possible. So, those of you who
invited me, let me know if it will be easy for you, or if circumstances
or facilities make it difficult. While I _do_ plan to meet every last one
of you at or after the show, I think I'd do best to stay with whoever is
going to have no problem whatsoever with the overnight. (i.e. the person
with an extra room, or the week off, or who's living at home, etc.) I'll
decide for sure as December approaches, if I can afford this. THANKS!

    2. If I could make a toast, and call for a round of applause, for George
Fan (deebor@aol.com) for that killer cover he made for Acoustic Dreams!
Isn't that sweet?! I can't draw like that if my life depended on it.

    3. Every now and then in the newsgroups, or at football games, or
conventions, or here in the Jam in the last issue, I see someone post
"Read John 3:16". Well, ever the curious, I decided to find out once and
for all what was so special about _that verse_. Here it is:

"Yes, God so loved the world
that He gave His only Son,
that whoever believes in Him may not die
             but may have eternal life."

Quite a passage, eh? Especially with the lyrical discussions and various
posts arguing about religion and secularism, this is particularly
relevant. This is a passage that I can find no fault with. It gives one
what alcoholics call "a moment of clarity."

Well, I promised I'd shut up, so I will. I'll close with a usual
    sick joke...

So a boy comes home from his first date, and his parents are so
proud of him. Immediately they ask him how his night went, and he said
"It was incredible! I got laid!" His mother was immediately angered and
slapped him with the back of her hand. "You filthy lecher! I can't
believe I raised my son to be a tramp! Go to your room!" And so he did.
Soon his father came up to his room and came inside. "Son," he said "your
mother sent me up here to talk to you. But I'm going to tell you what I
_really_ think. WAY TO GO! I'm proud of you, son! It's a big step you've
taken toward becoming a Man. How did it feel?"

The son replied, "It was great, dad! The pleasure, the orgasm...
it was better than anything I'd ever had in my life! I can't wait until I
get a chance to do it again!"

The father winked at his son and asked, "And when will that be?"

The son replied, "When my ass stops hurting."

Is there any reality basis for Mike's mother dying in a plane crash, or
does this just come from the line, "preparing for her flight"?

If so, this doesn't conjure images of 747s in my head, just a woman with

and actually, I _do_ still have a t-shirt.

    To All You Ytsejammers,

Okay guys, time to break out the literature books! The poem quote in A
Change of Seasons "Gather ye rosebuds..." is by a British Renaissance-Era
poet by the name of Robert Herrick. The poem, "To the Virgins, to Make Much
of Time" basically mirrors the philosophy Carpe Diem, which is obviously
stressed in the song. Hmm... so much for the theory of drummers being
dumb... Portnoy obviously does his homework!

For all you fellow seven-string slingers, or daring detuners out there,
the transcription for Lie that appeared in the November 1994 issue of Guitar
for the Practicing Musician, seems to be accurate the whole way through.

I am a musician/songwriter who is an associate member of ASCAP.

ASCAP licenses all kinds of music and does so under the United States Copyright
    Law.
It is my understanding that a song may be copyrighted in the following forms:

1> Sheet Music and any related forms thereof
                     or 2> Complete commercial recording
                    <not necessary if a sheet exists>
These are the only two forms I am aware of, there may be more.

To save money, musicians will do the "Poor Man's Copyright", which is
technically legal and will stand up in a court of law. That is to send, or have
someone send you the "form", be it sheets or tapes. Unopened, the date will
stand as sufficient proof in court.

The only other legal way I'm aware of is to register <copyright> with a
copyright form from the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.

Also, a copyright is legal and binding for 50 years after the authors/writers
    death.

As for DT content...I think ACOS is, without a doubt, DT's best work to date. It
had I&W's "sustained brilliance" which Awake unfortunatly didn't match.
Nonetheless, Awake was a great disc.

I have to agree there. I've seen Eric Johnson/Satriani, The Moody
Blues, and Queensryche at the Concord Pavilion, and the sound for
all these shows has been *outstanding*. The Concord QR show sounded
better than the Sacramento show the night before. The Sac. show was
outside, too, but it's basically a grandstand; whereas, the Pavilion
is actually engineered for good acoustics.

    Zach

(I wish Rush would get a new sound engineer, or something. All
three shows I saw on the last tour *sucked* sound-wise.)

    Hi jammers,

To answer BABS question about James participation to Coney Hatch, I will say
that James worked for one year with the band (before WINTER ROSE), but he
never recorded any album. Just some demos I think, as he also did with Steve
Perry from Journey. These informations came from James himself, so you can
    consider that they are reliable.

As for John Petrucci with Steve Morse. They only recorded demos together,
but Steve Morse is too busy at this moment to make a final recording with
John for a Guitar compilation. They will do it... later.

Hey you, UK jammers, have you seen the "Perfect strangers / Damge Inc."
single in your record strores? It was planned to be release, but since I had
    no more informations.

I am looking for traders every where in the world. I got more than 100 audio

Dream Theater have already sold out.

They refused to tour the UK because they aren't quite as popular here as they are in the
rest of the world, and they seemed to think that they were 'above' playing small venues.

If every other rock band under the sun can tour the UK, why the hell can't Dream Theater?

    Dear all,

Firstly, sorry for resending at least one of the entire digests recently.
I was trying to send it to a group of people and I did but only after I
accidently sent it back to the list.

Now for the real stuff....Joe Satriani's new album....ACE!!!!

I know the surfing tunes have gone, but there are some beautiful pieces on the
album. Track 11 has to be my song of the moment.....goosebumps city for me when
    that one gets played!!!!!

The only track that starts a bit too jazzy and (as far as I am concerned) tune
less is Killer Bee Bop (track 9 is it??) But all the rest are good.

My favorites are #11, #6, #7, .... in that order, the rest are about the same

I just hope an all over print T-Shirt is out soon with the CD cover on it....
    sunsets are cool!!!!

well there you go, hope this stimulates some more people who like the album
to write in about it cos a few were quite disappointed as far as I remember
    last week.....

    bye for now, Rob

    Hi all!!

I have read in several "issues" of YTSEJAM that DT will be playing on the east
coast at several locations right around Chirstmas. I live in Califoria but will
be in Boston between Chistmas and New Years. Does anyone know if DT will be
playing anywhere near Boston? If so, could you tell me the date(s)?

    Thanks!

    Luis

    Hellow!

Anyone out there into trading tapes (not DAT ones)? If you
are interested, mail me at fitipmolOibmmail.com. I've got a
somewhat large selection of European and especially Finnish
(I'm a Finn! We're the World Amateur Hockey Champs!) metal
     disks and tapes.

concerning the question about songs length

JP said that the songs in gonna be shorter (that means no more ACos sorry)

i compare that to what RUSH have done in the past

rush album hemispheres :4 songs 2 of them are longs
permanents waves: 6 songs 2 of them are longs
moving pictures : 8 songs no one is long (big success)
all others album after that; no long song

dream theater images and words: 8 songs 5 of them are longs
awake : 11 songs 3 of them are longs
next one :?? songs and maybe 1 is gonna be long
                     (METROPOLIS PART 2)

i think that's the reason why kevin is gone. The band wanted to do short
song and not him. because short songs = big success

i'm not happy with that because i love long long song.

I just read that Brian W. is selling a copy of the Home Sweet Home bootleg.
I was just like to recommend this boot to any big fans of James. This
was one of the 1st shows on the I&W's tour and his voice sounds incredible!!
The sound quality is pretty good. Its above average but not as good as
Lost in the Sky. (BTW - I was listing to LitS the other day. It rules!!!
Nothing beats the live version of Learning to Live!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Just three things on what's left of my mind.

    1. In one of the last jams, somebody (I forget who) committed the blasphemy of admiting that they didn't initially like Metropolis Pt. 1. Thanks, whoever you are. I felt just the same way at first. The girl who first introduced my to DT gave me her copy of IaW to tape, and I deliberately left out the aforementioned track for two reasons (i) I just didn't like it: it was too 'bitty' (or so I thought at the time), (ii) it made IaW fit onto one side of a C90 cassette!! I now see the folly of my ways, and Metropolis is now one of my favourite tracks. Perhaps getting to appreciate DT is like getting a taste for good whisky (I don't mean that sugar water called bourbon, or that stuff they brew in Ireland - I mean real, good, properly aged single malts): your first sip tastes like the cat just crapped on your tounge, but after a time, you really get to like the stuff, and can even tell what the cat has been eating for the last few days.

    2. In Jam 1026 Paul Fini asked "is that not the longest run-on sentence you've ever seen?" (refering to a JP guitar clinic somewhere). Well Paul, sorry to disappoint you, but no, it isn't the longest sentence I've ever seen. One of Ireland's (and the world's) greatest authors, James Joyce, is sampled during 6.00, and his friend and translator, Samuel Beckett, came up with the longest sentence that I have seen up to now. It appears in the last part of the so-called Beckett Trilogy, and runs for about 80 pages without any punctuation at all. Perhaps DT could make a song out of it?

    3. Alert readers of this stuff of mine may well know by now that I am also a big fan of Tiamat. Well, if you're not into them by now, do it. I saw them live last night, and it was the best performance I've seen by any band this year, including DT (puts on asbestos trousers and waits for flames). OK, all concert reports are subjective, but these guys really were amazing. The set included almost all of the last album 'Wild Honey', and included an absolute killer cover of Pink Floyd's 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun'. They will still be touring in Europe until mid-November, supporting Black Sabbath. Check them out if you get the chance. PS. Sabbath were good too.

I think (therefore I am confused). No that's not what I meant. I think that's enough from me for a few days. I'm off to the Baltic Sea for a weekend of wreck diving, and guess what tapes I'll be taking to keep me company on the 6 hour-plus drive.

stay safe, have fun, and let's keep religion and racism and bigotry out of the Jam in future (please)

    Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)
