I went to the clinic on Sunday and I am just now sitting down to write
    about it.(Sorry)

Some other jammers might have already posted something but I am about
    10 digests behind, so
bear with me if you have already heard it...

First of all, John came out and played a song called 'Lost Without
    You'. It was an instrumental
dedicated to his wife. It was basically a laid back tune in a minor
key. It was a good chance to
hear John really lay back and play. There were not that many fast runs
    in the song. BTW, he
played with a DAT covering the other instruments. If he ever does a
solo album, I would love to
    hear this on it.

Next, he went into some instructions. He went over some chromatic
    exercises which were
interesting since he would play them slow enough for us to follow.
Then, he would crank up the
distortion and blaze across the fretboard with the exercise.

He also played the right handed fingering for Chopin's Etude #2. This
    was quite amazing to
witness. First, he played it real slow for us to be able to follow.
Then, he played it at normal
speed with the DAT playing the left handed fingering (piano). Finally,
he played it at extra fast
speed which was totally amzing. For those familiar with Chopin, his
    'normal speed' is incredibly
    fast!

Next, John played Erotomania. Unfortunatley, due to sound problems, he
    had to stop in the
middle of it. But, once the sound was fixed, he played it again from
    the top.

As if all this was not enough, he then played a new song he has been
    working on that he said
might show up on a DT album. It was actually a combination of
    different themes he was working
on. It started out reminding of something from the Lion King (Circle
    of Life maybe). It sounded
like african drums playing in the background with John playing some
    very cool leads and
melodies over the top of it. Then, it took a sharp twist and sounded
    like something from the
Nutcracker (I promise! I did not smoke any crack before attending the
    clinic!). Overall, it was
very cool for John to show us some of the ideas he's working on. I
would say that it was not as
heavy as some of the stuff on Awake. It seemed more jazzy.

In between all these songs, he fielded questions from the audience.
    Some interesting tidbits did
    come out.

    6:00 (the lyrical meaning)
About someone who's trapped in a situation that can't escape
    from. John laughed and
said Kevin probably wrote thi about how he really felt in the band.

    6:00 (the intro)
I was surprised to hear from John that the beginning is a
    keyboard. I thought it was
guitar! He wasnt even quite sure of how to play it on guitar.

    Live Video
According to John, there wont be one. The next release from DT
    will be the next album
which will be recorded in early 96 and released in mid 96.

    Twins
Congratulations to John! His wife is pregnant with twins. A
    girl and a boy.

    On alternative bands
He doesnt have a problem with grunge as long as it has good
    melody and harmony. He
cited Nirvana as a good example of this. He also jokingly cited Hole
    as a bad example.

    ACOS
All the lyrics are indeed written by Mike (James helped with
    vocal melodies). Also,
    Derek helped rewrite the song.

    Song length
John thinks that with maturity, the songs will eventually become
    shorter and more
    concise.

    Metropolis II
It might be on the next album, but he said they would have to
    write it first!
    Ytsejam
He does not have a computer but he gets reports from family and
    friends

Oh well, it was a incredible experience. John was on the stage for
almost 2 and a half hrs.
Afterward he signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans
    (Hopefully my pictures will turn
out. I also took some while he was playing!) I told him I would post
of review to the jam. He
asked whether it would be favorable or not.

BTW, I looked around for you Paul, but didnt see you. I hope you were
    able to make it.

    Rick

    Jammers,

    Two questions:

    1)
Why does the actual Lie single CD say that the CD was made in Germany, yet
the CD inlay says that it is the first ever UK release? I don't know if
this has been asked or answered yet, but I noticed it and was curious.

    2)
On the Subcon. version of Eve, from where/what do the spoken story lines
that occur during the song come from? (Was that a clear enough question?)

    Thanks

    Ryan

<<Okay, I checked into the Silent Man. Here are just the tip of the
iceberg on ways it's based on Arabian Nights.

            * A question well served, is silence like a fear, or a
voice never heard, or a message with no receiver?

This is right out of the prologue of Arabian Nights, the story of
King Shahryar and Shahrazad, the woman who tells the tales for a
thousand and one nights. Shahrazad is the daughter of the royal
vizier, and they argue when she says she knows how to get King
Shahryar to stop killing a maiden every night (which was what he
had been doing) and she asks him if silence is like a fear, or if
a voice never heard or a message with no listener might have the
answer. This sets up her telling the King the tales so the King
won't kill her, every night, as she tries to get the message to
            sink in.>>

Okay, about 3/4 a year ago there was a thread going around about why was
A Mind Beside Itself divided into three parts. It was mentioned, by me
and others, that all of it [AMBI] had to do with a man going through the
pain of having an affair or something. Maybe even loving another women
other than the one he was with now. Or even going to have an affair.

Now it seems obvious that the songs contained within A Mind Beside
Itself were all separate parts to a whole story.

Now I thought that it was interesting that A Silent Man also had a type
of fade in (there was no real noticeable break between songs). Meaning: A
Silent Man was a continuation of this story. It would be the resolution
of the story. After all of the hell he had gone through with the pain and
acceptance in A Mind Beside Itself, he finally thinks about whether he
should stay where he is or go and follow this other love.

This is just a really quick view of A Silent Man. Now, I have never read
Arabian Nights, so I canUt say that it isn't based off of it. I think,
however, that the story may not be based of it. It can be real easy to
take any story and relate it to another story because all stories follow
and contain certain patterns. So it seems doubtful that A Silent Man is
based on a killer or whatever. Instead it is a story on a love affair or
    something.

Of course, any intelligent interpretation in such arts is applicable and
    can not be called wrong.

    Questions, comments, smart remarks . . .

    Ryan--Nypsie

    * It could be possible that those first lines were based from the book,
            but it could end there.

I would like to make a request. I know the set-list has been
posted on the Jam before, but i don't have it. I have a copy of the
Ronnie Scott's show, but need to know what some of the songs are. Could
someone please re-post the set-list? Thanks in advance.

Also, to the person who asked about the version of Bombay Vindaloo
on Guitar For the Practicing Musican III cd. It IS the same one as the
Live At The Marquee cd. It says so in the liner notes. I was
    disappointed, too.

I've been a Queensryche fan for many years now, and all I can say about
picking a good album to start with is...I don't know. All of their
albums are quite different in style, from the popular, happy-sounding
Empire to more 80's rock stuff on The Warning. Personally, I think the
new album is great, but really any of their older stuff is good too. I'm
    rambling here...basically, I'd say start with Operation:Mindcrime. It's
probably their best, and most original. If you don't already know, it's
a storyline, like Tommy. Good luck!

    To Bafu Vai
    --------------
In regards to your comment about DT playing in larger venues. Basically
I agree with you on the point of arenas and stadiums, but as far as
outdoor places go, I don't. There are auditoriums, like Great Woods in
Massachusetts for example, that are specifically made for music
listening. I have seen several concerts there, and the sound quality has
been outstanding. I've seen such bands as Rush and Queensryche there and
in Arenas, and I'd have to say that the auditorium was obviously better.
I think DTs sound would be enhanced by such a setting. My opinion anyway..

Hi all. Do to some odd circumstances (running around looking for some
roadie guy with Kaoru to get us back stage!), I was unable to get a
DT hat at the Hammerjacks show last October. A few weeks after the show
I did find someone who bought me a shirt and mailed it to me.

I wanted to know if anyone would be interested in doing the same thing
for me since DT has a few shows coming up in the next couple of months.
I'd of course pay you for it as well as shipping charges, duh! :)
Or, if you have a used one that is in very good condition that you would be
willing to sell, that would be ok too. Let me know!!!

The hat that I'm talking about is not the black one with gold letters
but the new one that is like a natural/beige (sp?) kinda color with
a navy blue brim, majesty logo on front, and "Dream Theater" on the back.

    Thanks!

( sent on 10-5-95, never made it as of 10-7-95. re-sent 10-7...if it appears twice I am sorry...if it doesn't: I am not sorry)

    Many threads here folks...

First of all to JIMMY...lighten up man! Your low-class response to Bafu Vai's interpretation of ACOS lyrics was really a low-class response, Mercy Fuck.... I am repeating myself!! I am sorry but: you are............an........ asshole!

Our famous ACOS reviewer Jason Fuckett, er Fickett....really big asshole. I read the post about understanding where he might be coming from and I realize he didn't really post his review for us to read on the Jam...still a really big asshole.

Now Hairball: I HAVE a CD player....NOT a CD recorder. If you have access to one then you are an...well you know. If you don't then..........you are not.

Jaime.... maybe I am jealous of your sig., or maybe you designed it just so_ I_ would get a damn headache reading it. I am not usually paranoid but I think you did it on purpose. Although, I will admit I like it.:) Is a sig. possible using AOL?? Don't think so... BTW....I think God is paying you back for giving me a headache by destroying your monitor IMHPO, of course.

Anyone who goes to a John Petrucci clinic in Florida or anywhere else is an asshole. You can redeem yourself to me by recording it on video and sending it to me, along with lots of cash so I can buy some more Tylenol.

ANAGRAMS and DT. Went on the Web and found an anagram generator. I received over 900 different word combinations for Dream Theater. The two I liked best were..DREAM THEE ART, and TEAM RED HEART. I got another headache reading all of them.

More DT content. I just picked up The Silent Man single with The Silent Man, obviously, and Take the Time and Eve....or TSM single with TSM,TTT, and E for those of us that are into letters. Take the Time is an earlier demo version that has some interesting differences...vocal mix, lyrics, guitar/effects,( especially on the intro), the drum mix, keys. Interesting to get a snapshot on how they developed the song. For those of you that DON'T have this CD I guess I am the asshole...boy it sure feels good to be one...at least in this case <:8).

More DT content. There is simply no better band on earth than Dream Theater. If you disagree then ...well you know.

Dream Theater International Fan Club...No I am _still_ not a member officially. I mean they still have my money and I have the cancelled check. I think I am going to send them a registered letter demanding that they give me what I paid for and also demand that all five band members come here to Portland Oregon and give me all the fan club goodies in person. Boy won't that be cool.

Images and Words...the official fanzine from England..has an interview with James LaBrie and he talks about " Mercy Fuck VS. Sympathy" ( JIMMY...please substitute Mercy Duck..) Images and Words # 7 August 1995..................................................................... " Yeah. Mike will comment on this too, but, it was basically I brought it up to him, it's one thing if I speak with that word in my own personal life, and I don't want to come off sounding like pompous or stuck up, or hypocritical for that matter, but to me I really do not want to be associated with that type of language, with profanity, in the context of music. I think that there are many words within the English diction that can be just as powerful or just as emotional, than to use a word of that nature, to be shock value if you might want to say that, or whatever. I just thought that when it comes to creative forces, that's one thing that I want to do without, I don't want that element within the context of music. I spoke up, and the other guys in the band seemed to agree, and it was more or less Mike and I working things out and coming to a decision. I said to Mike that I wanted people's focus and attention on the music composition and on everything else that is within it, not the whole topic and speak of it being "Hey, did you hear what they did?" It takes the focus off the most important thing, and that is the music" -------------------------------------------- End of quote...I know there a lot of commas, however, I copied it correctly.

Warren in Oregon Warren, still not a fan club member Warren, choosing between beer and Tylenol...Jaime!! Warren, expecting a call from the band letting me know when they will arrive here Warren, no fancy sig.... Jaime!! Warren, no CD recorder Hairball! Warren, let's keep the Mercy Fuck thread going for Jimmy. ***legal stuff*** in no way am I really calling anyone an asshole. This is just a humor break on the Jam. Don't take anything seriously OK. Except for Jimmy. >>

    'jammers,

First of all, the opening riff to 6:00 is a distorted keyboard.

Secondly, I heard a live version of Take the Time and thought James sounded a little egotistical. At the end he says something like, "That's the first time people answered back on that one, and pronounced those words correctly. Thank you." Does anyone agree (you have to hear his expression during that). Just a comment. No flames please.

Thirdly, people have mentioned DT playing in Malibu and also Connecticut. What exactly is their tour plan around X-mas time? Is it just a small tour?

Fourthly, whatever happened to that JP guitar giveaway? I haven't received anything in the mail yet!

    Hi All,

I need to ask a favor of someone out there. I really want to go to the DT show at the El-N-Gee in Conneticut. But ticketmaster isn't selling tickets for this show. Is there anyone out there that can get me a ticket soon before they sell out and I can send you the money for it? The reason I need to do this is because I am in Madison Wisconsin right now but will be in the CT area for X-mas. So if you can help me out please e-mail me. Thanks.

By the way Acoustic Dreams is cool, although I don't like the version of Another Day that much. Just a personal preference I guess. And everyone tell Babs that she should go to the CT show on December 27th!

Hey all: Adam Cook asked for bands in which their second or later albums took a turn into left field (ie, total change from first or previous album)...I'll only print the "good" stuff. :) Testament's _The Ritual_, which got me into Testament (most long-time Testament fans say it is too comercial or mainstream, but this made me go back and purchase _Practice What You Preach_) and the later _Low_. _Low_ is much much harder, except for "Trail Of Tears", but it doesn't really go out into "left field". Altered State's self titled debut (with "Ghost Beside My Bed", their only song to get radio airplay) and their second album _:[dos]:_ which is much more weird and resembles nothing like "Ghost", so I guess they don't really care for popularity, just to do their own s**t, which is DAMN GOOD S**T! And finally, Skid Row's self-titled debut (with such memorable songs as "18 And Life", "Youth Gone Wild", and "I Remember You" which got massive airplay) and their second album _Slave To The Grind_ which also got airplay, but this time on KNAC (heavy metal station gone kaput!) instead of standard rock stations. Much harder, but still has its fair share of ballads. Sebastian Bach REALLY breaks through the ceilig on this album. Damn he's good! For those of you who haven't heard STTG, listen to it...and you'll know why LaBrie complements Bach on his way of singing. Simply astounding. Just my dos centavos. Til next time...

Hello DT fans. I am from Boston and let me tell you it is SO exciting to find fellow DT fans, some people just don't get it. I am a guitar nut that worships John P. and George Lynch. Can anyone tell me if there is a list like this for Dokken/George Lynch or for that matter ANYTHING on George Lynch out there?

Also, have any of you checked out Annihilator? The "Set the World on Fire" CD is intense, especially the title track and "Brain Dance".

Finally, for those of you on the Fates Warning/Queensrych side, has anyone checked out LETHAL. I found 1 tape by them..."Programmed". The song writing is not on the DT/Queensrych level but the vocals are incredible!! -thanks

Well guys, the survey is over and I have tabulated the results. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that more of you did not respond to it, but at last I got enough to have a decent overview. Well guys, here it goes...

YTSE JAM O.J. AND ALBUM POLL ----------------------------

OUT OF 42 RESPONSES TO EACH QUESTION:

Question 1: Do you agree with the O.J. verdict?

    Yes No Don't Know Who's O.J.? -------- -------- ------- ------

    14 - 33% 22 - 53% 5 - 12% 0 - 0%

and we had one crazy vote that "O.J. may be the Anti-Christ."

Question 2: Which album of Dream Theater is your favorite?

    I&W Awake WD&DU ACoS Subconcious DoE --- ----- ----- ---- ----------- --- 24 - 57% 12 - 29% 4 - 10% 0 - 0% 1 - 2% 1 - 2%

Well, that's the results of the first Chris Crowder - Ytse Jam Mailing List Poll. I hope you have enjoyed this, and also that it helps us know a little bit more about our fellow Jammers. Until later, stay cool, you all.

One crazed Dream Theater Fan, Chris Crowder

P.S. Anybody got any ideas for future polls?

Quickly, A MASTERFUL interpretation there, Mike. Well worded and leaving nothing out. I agree that John went for the classic and obscure reference there and that is EXACTLY why "the great music-buying public" will never see the deeper meanings. Oblique references make not for simple-minded music....:)

Who was it who was talking about Ozric Tenicales? YES>..what a great band!

    I love that stuff!

About the Trinity? The heart symbol.....I would have to disagree that is the meaning behind that artwork. My opinion is that basicly if someone "belongs" to the christian faith..etc..etc...your heart is "chained" up with thorns that "do not matter". I believe a sacreligious(sp?) meaning... As some of the DT songs sing about. I believe "Take the Time" is kinda a "new-age/western influence". "Find all you need in your mind".. in other words..you dont need God. You just need "yourself". A very strong "new age" teaching.

The song..."change of season" has many negative "christian" words to it.

    I still love DT!!!!!

    see ya

You know, it really adds punch to a post when someone's last line is followed with "End of Ytsejam #----." You know, the classic, "Blah blah blah blah blah. NUFF SAID." immediately followed with "END OF YTSEJAM." It just seems to drive the point home, like, "Yeah, *I* said that, and that's *ALL* the 'jams have to say."

---------- Somewhere in here I'm going to add to the recent thread that people are going crazy without Dream Theater or thinking of killing themselves because they can't listen to Dream Theater or doubting they would have a will to live were there no Dream Theater...

    Watch closely... It's here... Somewhere...

    ---------- To Mike Bahr:

Suppose one of your colors is green. Lich, Fastbond, Dark Heart Of The Wood, Feldon's Cane. You figure it out.

---------- On recent threads I've been avoiding:

Mike's snare on ACOS sounds very military, an adjective I haven't seen anyone on this list use yet. It's tight, it's somewhat metallic, and it can be used very subtlely when Mike feels like feather-dusting instead of bashing. I see no problem using this sound on a song. But like I said, I have yet to conform and just write what I don't like about Dream Theater, so I'm not going to post a list of things that I can't stand about their sound.

My favorite John Petrucci solo is an instrumental called "Slow Motion" that he did at the last NAMM show in Anaheim, CA. If you've never heard it, you are missing out on the more mellifluous (smooth and sweet-sounding) side of Petrucci's playing. Like most sounds/music, words can't really describe this piece of music, but I could try by saying it's an "instrumental ballad." The only problem with that title is that there is an excruciatingly fast part in the middle that, after learning and transcribing, I now call "Petrucci's Ladder." If anyone's interested I'll post the tab for it. Helluva workout.

Perhaps someday "Slow Motion" will be available on a cd of John's clinic-work, but until then the masses will never know.

As for solos everyone has heard, "Scarred" gets the nod. That includes the video-game-esque whole tone exercise that precludes the keyboard solo; that fast thing Kevin and John do together. Sounds even better when you're playing along AND singing the guitar part at the same time. Now if I could just master that farting technique Ken Bibb was talking about, I'd REALLY stand out in the world of music.

Speaking of Ken Bibb, you might be interested to know that I always send my replies to MYSELF before I send them to the 'Jam. My posts never get sent immediately after writing, more like an hour afterwards. This way it shows up in my Inbox and I can read over what I've written and revise it slightly. Yes, a cool-down period is helpful, though for some reason my comments remain somewhat caustic at times. I guess I'm just cursed.

"No, but you ARE a freaking LOONY."

    No, I'm not that.

    "Yes you are!"

What?! Who cares what you think??

The funny part is, you all probably thought I was being silly and putting up what I think everyone is thinking of me at the moment. Why would I need your flames when I can just argue with myself, the other me who mails all my posts to me before sending them here?

Now, the REAL questions on my mind...

    1. Who IS Cobra Commander?

    2. Who IS that neighbor on Home Improvement?

    3. Who IS Kaiser Sorza?

    4. What IS the secret of The Crying Game?

I have discovered that they are all one and the same entity. . . . . .
