            Ben Laussade:

You recently asked about starting to listen to Queensryche. I would
personally suggest "Operation: Mindcrime." If you're into the heavy
kind of stuff like Metallica, Primus, and Megadeth, you'll enjoy this
one the most. I believe 'Mindcrime' has the most consistent drive, and
the best album content. I also like the idea of the whole album telling
a story. Just my own suggestion.

I will try to stay as politically correct as I can.

$.01: About African-Americans acting like victims, that is a
semi-stereotype. I'm sure that there are plenty who do and plenty who
don't. I also know that many African-Americans ARE victims for no apparent
reason. If they act like a victim because they ARE/WERE a victim, fine.
But if they act like a victim without ever having been a victim for the
purpose of gaining leverage in different situations, I am very strongly
    opposed to that.

$.02: As for O.J.:I hope he did it, so there isn't another killer running
on the loose. Also I think it likely that O.J. did it AND Mark "Dumbass"
Furhman set him up. I'm all for a seperate trial for Dumbass.

I guess we should stick to talking about DT on the Jam, but I
    couldn't resist. Bye.

I really love ACOS. In Achilles Last Stand John does a better job
then Jimmy on the rhythyme figures of the song, But Jimmy has a far
more emotional Solo than John. And I think Myung gets stomped all over
    by John Paul(IMHO). Opinions.

Yes, MTV Europe botched their video of the Ronnie Scotts gig, but they
weren't the only ones taping. I was told there were two other cameras
running, and I'd figure they were both the band/management's. Possibly
someone who was there can confirm/deny. My info comes from an ex-MTVE
employee who I asked to run off a dub before leaving :^)

Yeah, I guess it sounds like I'm trying to brag about _not_ being able to

Everyone's posting about the DT show at Malibu in Long Island. I read on
the Ticketmaster web page that they're also selling tickets for Dream
Theater at the Birch Hill in Old Bridge NJ for a December 29th show.
That's the same place they played back in June or July.

    Hello Jammers,

    Acoustic Dreams
    ---------------
Sorry Mike, postal service sucks, I still haven't gotten mine yet, but I
will post a review shortly after it does arrive. Hold your head up!

    Giving Up on Rush
    -----------------
Mark told me not to give up on Rush. Well, I will continue to go see the
live show, since I enjoy that quite a bit. Its just that their more
recent albums seem so much weaker than the other music I'm listening to,
whether its Inferno's architect, Boud Deun's Fiction and Several Days,
    Rush's 2112, Dream Theater's Images and Words, Threshold's Livedelica.
Counterparts didn't do much for me in the long run. I loved it when it
first came out, same with Roll the Bones but they kinda lost me after a
while. I'm just the opposite on Presto. IMO That album has some of
Neil's best drumming and lyrics. Everyone is different... that is the
    bottom line.

Wow, post season baseball is actually exciting! Go figure... Mariners
    are beating Cleveland?

    Later,

    Mike

    i say:

i would think the answer is FALSE as well...but for a different reason. now,
i'm not an expert on copyrighting or any legal shit (hell, i can't even
spell ;) but my understanding of copyright laws goes like this: whenever
someone creates/composes something, it is automatically "copyrighted" by
that person as original and belonging to/property of that person. the only
problem that arises for that person is *proving* that they created/composed
the idea "first". this is where the copyrighting procedure comes into play.

by copyrighting something (ie. filling out one of those forms and sending in
a tape ro wutever) it is *much* easier for that person th claim ownership of
that idea. and the courts generally listen to the person holding the
copyright rather than Joe Schmoe who has nothing.

get it? i think that's close to be correct. that's how *i* understand it,
    anyways. agree? disagree? got proof?

Dec. 28, eh? Serendipitously, my friend (huge DT fan) and I will
be arriving in upstate NY the afternoon of the 27th for over a
week's stay. I think we might be able to swing getting down to
the City. It would be cool to hook up with some Eastern 'Jammers
at the show since most of us Western 'Jammers *missed out* on
repeat dates for the last tour.

How large is this place? Will it sell out quickly? Although, even
if I buy some tickets now, I could stand to lose 25-40 bucks if we
couldn't make it just to support my favorite band.

    > also, someone mentioned whatqueensryche to start with, and i would like to

I'd go with _Operation: Mindcrime_. _Warning_ (sans "NM156," "Sanctuary,"
and "Take Hold of the Flame,") is my least favorite. _Rage for Order_
is most excellent, as is _Empire_, but Mindcrime would probably be
the favorite of a metal fan (if I remember the original post right).
*Don't* start with _Promised Land_; it's the "Hold Your Fire" of
    Queensryche albums.

Ben (and others that are irritated),

When you see these posts (and you want to do something about it) emailing
the original poster is a useful action. Please do not include an entire
ytsejam when responding to that poster because:

            1) you might accidentally be sending your flame to ytsejam@arastar.com
            2) it might be considered emailbombing.

Also writing to the user's postmaster might be useful. (Though possibly
    harsh.)

It was written by one of my (and one of Kevin Moore's) favorite authors:
James Joyce. The samples from "Eve" also originate from there (and "Nora"
    is also related.)

Info on this (and the other samples) is in the FAQ (or was going to go
in there--a large discussion was done when Awake first came out).

    > Someone on the Queensryche list (Screaming in Digital) suggested a while
    > back that the quote in "The Mirror" which goes, "What are you doing
    > here?" is Mary from Queensryche's

Mike gave me a list of sources of samples on that song and Operation
Mindcrime was not one of them. This FAQ is sort of like the "I heard
the hospital opening of Mindcrime on show X" (the answer to the Mindcrime
thing is that the opening of O:M is from a sound effects tape that is
commonly used for Hollywood hospital backgrounds. It has appeared in
    *dozens* of places).

I'm pretty sure that the original source was put into the FAQ. If not
    it's in last October's 'jams.

Personally, I feel that if you want to discuss OJ, prejudice, hatred,
or any related topic that you should bring them up in an appropriate
forum (like in appropriate newsgroups). These topics aren't on "Dream
Theater or related bands" so they should be moved elsewhere.

Having said that, I won't enforce it (posting entire backissues to the
list or posting ads will be enforced). If you, the reader, feel that
a topic is inappropriate for this list, tell the author of that post.

    > This better involve all 1,080 of us in some way, otherwise take

Um. Try 1125+ (well, it's 1125 this second, but there are a bunch of
unprocessed requests waiting in the queue so I expect it to go up again).
Unfortunately, many are requiring human intervention (especially if
routed via a certain misconfigured www page :)

    > 3. What is a "firewall?"

A firewall is a defensive measure used by many Internet sites. It's
also the wall between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment
in many cars. Firewalls can block all sorts of interesting stuff. They
    can also sometimes be fooled...

just wanted to say that i got my acoustic dreams cd and it is great. i actually have had it since last week, but didnt get off my ass to say anything about it til mike begged us to :)

anyway, the acoustic and demo tracks are fantastic quality. L.I.E. is kinda weird, and doesnt resemble lie very much, but i like it :)

any way you can post exactly when/where this stuff came from? i must have forgotten if you said. it was obviously an in studio/rehearsal/fm type of situation. crystal clear except for a little analog noise on some tracks.

the "bonus tracks" sounded like you pulled them directly off a.k.'s tape...

    hehe

ps. i still like "when dream and james unite" alot better than "...today..."

Date: Tue, 10 Oct 1995 22:39:15 -0700 (MST) From: Michael Bahr <durnik@indirect.com> To: ytsejam@anthor.arastar.com Subject: Another long winded post! Message-ID: <199510110539.WAA04596@bud.indirect.com>

Yup, my second long post in as many days! Live with it! :) I'm stuck at home invalid with fever, and thus, need to blow time this way.

Okay, I checked into the Silent Man. Here are just the tip of the iceberg on ways it's based on Arabian Nights.

    * A question well served, is silence like a fear, or a voice never heard, or a message with no receiver?

This is right out of the prologue of Arabian Nights, the story of King Shahryar and Shahrazad, the woman who tells the tales for a thousand and one nights. Shahrazad is the daughter of the royal vizier, and they argue when she says she knows how to get King Shahryar to stop killing a maiden every night (which was what he had been doing) and she asks him if silence is like a fear, or if a voice never heard or a message with no listener might have the answer. This sets up her telling the King the tales so the King won't kill her, every night, as she tries to get the message to sink in.

    * Pray they won't ask

This is out of a bunch of the tales, most notably the Merchant's tale, the Barber's tale, and the tale of the Ox and the Ass. In each one, a person holds a secret at some point that they fear they are cursed to die if they ever reveal.

    * Behind the stained glass, there's always one more mask

The women of the Nights were usually up to no good in some form or another, and it usually involved disguise.

    * Has man been a victim, of his woman, of his father?

The following men in Arabian Nights were victims of their women: King Shahryar Shah Zaman (from the framework tale) The 3 Shiekhs (from the Tale of the Merchant and the Djinn) Prince Mahmud (from the Tale of the Enchanted Prince) Badar Al-Din Hasan (from the Tale of the 3 Apples) The barber's first, second, and fifth brothers (from the Hunchback's Tale) Every male character in the tale of Dalilah Sinbad (from Sinbad the Sailor)

The following men in Arabian Nights were victims of their fathers: Aladdin (guess) The Sage Duban (from the Fisherman's tale)

When I refer to being victims here, I mean the women/fathers deliberately screwed them over in some way, the effects varying from a blatant betrayal to death.

    * If he elects not to bother, will he suffocate their faith?

This refers to the Silent Man directly (the barber). He is a saver of lives and a mediator of disputes, and more importantly, the world's biggest teller of tall tales. (He calls himself The Silent Man and is all but silent). At one point the SM himself says "if I decide not to bother, where will be their faith in me?"

    * Desperate to fall behind the great wall that separates us all.

This is a heavily recurring theme, it shows up in the stories of the Ebony Horse, Ali Baba, Aladdin, Julnar the Mermaid and her son Badar Basim, Prince Behram and Princess Al-Datma, the tale of the Nur din-Ali and his son, and Sinbad the Seaman. In all of these cases, the princes want to marry a certain princess, who takes their heart away entirely, so that they swear they'll die if they don't get her, and yet, naturally, they've chosen the one princess in all the world that's locked up in a dungeon with a raving barbarian for a father and kept away from the world. Usually, they steal the girl outright.

    * When there is reason, tonight I'm awake

This one should be easy... King Shahryar, Shahrazad, and Dunazade were awake for 1001 nights while these stories were told.

    * When there's no answer, arrive the Silent Man.

The mediator of disputes, saver of lives, and sage of fortunes.

    * If there is balance, tonight he's awake

Balance is a big deal in these books. The old principle of Eye for an Eye is heavy-handed here. So is the idea of swift, personal justice and the adjudication of the caliphs/sultans/emirs/etc. In fact, well nigh half the stories have to do with balance.

    * If they have to suffer, there lies the Silent Man.

Again, this is exactly what the SM saved people from...

    * Sin without deceivers, a God with no believers

I'll leave this to everyone else to figure out... Every single character in the book praises Allah but worships either money, power, or their own twisted ways.

    * I could sail by on the winds of silence,

Just like Sinbad did. Word for word, folks. :)

    * And maybe they won't notice, but this time I think I'll do better if I swim...

The focus of the Sinbad tale is for Sinbad to learn humility. Once he finally gets on the right track, he is rewarded with wealth and power beyond what he ever could have had as an arrogant sailor. The entire bridge seems to deal with this.

The song ends there, and it's just as well, because that's the last tale in the Arabian Nights! It worked out rather well. I know there's a lot of room for interpretation here, but wouldn't you say it starts to fit rather snugly for a song with heretofore-unexplained lyrics?

Now then, on to other things. I had the opportunity in with running errands and mailing CDs and so on to visit three Tower Records stores today, and just out of coincidence, the Tempe, Phoenix, and Mesa stores had ACOS in their bestseller rack at #27, 14, and 5 respectively. #5!! For an album like this, that is phenomenal. I also noticed that they were all out of cassettes and only had a few CDs left. I think somehow, someway, this band is going to be the underground success a la Rush we've hoped for.

Power Surge + Infernal Darkness + COP Red. Enough said.

I want to go to the Dream Theater show in Lido Beach, 12/28, but naturally I'm a continent away. If it dosen't sell out too soon, I might have someone buy me a ticket, and then make the trip. I dunno. I didn't like the New York area last time I was there (1991) but to see the only show on the ACOS tour in the USA, it may be worth it. We're talking Caress of Steel tour here, folks.

The Silent Man on Acoustic Dreams isn't all that different from the original version on Awake.

But wait, there's more! I was wondering if any other musicians in the audience are covering DT songs in their band. I think that'd be a SWEET project, tape or CD, to get covers together. My band does Pull Me Under, but then again, we're not as good as you prog-wizard Metropoplayers. :)

There was a Plan, and the Plan was without substance, and it would produce nothing, and darkness descended upon the faces of the workers, and they said unto their supervisors: "It is a crock of shit, and it stinketh." And their supervisors went to their managers and said unto them: "It is a pail of dung, and none may abide the odor therein." And the managers went to their department heads and said unto them: "It is a vessel of manure, and none may abide its strength." And the department heads went to their liaisons and said unto them: "It is a container of fertilizer, and it has great strength." And the liaisons went to their bosses, and said unto them: "It is that which grows plants, and is very strong." And the bosses went to their executives, and said unto them: "It promotes growth, and is very powerful." And the executives went to the Chairman of the Board and said unto him: "This Plan will promote growth and expansion throughout the Company, and is a strong, worthwhile measure we will be proud of."

..And the Chairman approved of the Plan, and the Plan became POLICY.

Fist off let this be said to anyone who LIKES THE "PLEASE DON'T GO" lyric. If you read the lyric's it makes perfect sense in the middle of the song, but makes little or no sense at the end. If you want it in the song leave it in the middle, the end just doesn't make much sense. Now those of you who like it on DoE better don't get uptight, just listen to both versions with lyrics in hand and try to figure it out.

I like the Snare on ACOS, I was the first to say HELMET-esque. But I would like him to go back to the old (Awake) sound for the new album.

Scared ya, huh... BTW- I got rid of a cool Marillion sig to make up for that little joke... (yes, that address is a joke)

For somebody asking about Queensryche: _Operation: Mindcrime_ is probably the best place to start. My fav Q album, just an incredibly intense and powerful concept album that is strong start to finish... It's also probably their hardest album...

    >Dennis Rodman -- a Chicago Bull? YEEEEEEESSSSHHHH!!!

This is sick and wrong. If you look up in the dictionary "Things That Just Should Not Happen" right after "Sheryl Crow Singing _D'yer Maker_" it will have "Dennis Rodman Playing For The Bulls." I liked Dennis as a Piston, when they just rocked and had all those cool games against the Bulls. I got sick of him on the Spurs, and now... he's on the Bulls, the antithesis of the Pistons. Sick and Wrong. BTW - No offence to Sheryl Crow fans, or Bulls fans for that matter, things look bleak for all NBA teams that don't play in Chicago, the Suns and Pistons (my favs) will have to wait...

A) Anyone heard anything about an over 21 thing at this one, THAT WOULD SUCK, and B) Where is Lido Beach? I've heard the name, just can't think of what it is near, any landmarks that I would know nearby? Neighboring towns? You get the point.
