alright, i too feel the need to comment about keeping DT underground.
HELLO!?!?! I find it extremely difficult to imagine DT "selling out", as
if commercial success is instantly going to make them lose all originality
and/or talent they have!?
it seems quite obvious to me that if DT's true motivation behind the
music was wanting commercial success that they would have put on some
flanel shirts and moved to Seattle a long time ago. Just look at how
difficult it is to find interviews where someone in the band other than
Mike is actually talking, IMO this means that they're letting the music do
the talking.
and why wouldn't you want them to become successful??that's kind of
like saying "well i think you are really talented, and i absolutely love
your music, but i hope that you never get any national recognition for it
and that you have to spend the rest of your life playing these dirty little
clubs while a lot of completely talentless "musicians" are treated like
royalty because MTV put them in the buzz bin"
i personally hope that they do make it big, they deserve it. and i
don't think that anybody who knows anything about DT could really think
that they'd sell out. i mean, come on, they deserve the good venues and a
little publicity would be nice.

Been reading the "jam" for awhile now. Saw a few things that jumped out at
me and thought I share some musings.

To Jim Colberg: Man you hit it right on the head. I thought that 6:00 was
pretty obvious but it took awhile for this to pop out.
"He finally found the sound but he's in too deep" - Kev's wrestling with the
impending neccessity to purse his own musical direction.
Anyway, its' a powerful song when viewed in this context.
I also really liked "Space Dye Vest" and found the words quite moving. (
although I admit, it took a while for the music to grow on me ). Renewed my
interest in programming percussive sequences with my Wavestation though. (
although his seq. sounds an awful lot like a "stock" sound on my SR ).
Awake is still my personal favorite CD.
Re: pedals on stage. Look closely at the I&W Live in Tokyo video. Clearly
visible in front of John Myung. Can't tell who makes them though. ( can't
be Taurus though, pre midi )
Speaking of Tokyo, I'm going !!!!!! Got business to do, and guess what.
Told the boss it had to be done after the 25th and before the end of October
. Pretty clever, huh! Hoping to "boot" the show, but am unfamiliar with
security at the Japanese shows. Any Japanese jammers out there, can you
fill me in on pre-concert searches, etc????

I AM SO EXCITED TO FIND FELLOW DT FANS !!!! They are hard to find. I am new
to the jam and because of it have been turned onto Fates...thank you.
Has anyone heard/listen to Fortune. They are a Boston-based band with a
major DT influence. The only CD that I have been able to locate is their
self titled first release. Any suggestions/info?

I can think of two that haven't been mentioned - AC/DC's live album
(If You Want Blood...You Got It) - the track of the same name
appeared on the Highway To Hell LP, and Def Leppard's On Through The
Night LP, the track with this title appeared on the High 'N' Dry LP.
3) Can somebody please post the set list from the last DT US tour
(the tour where they played the new ACoS)? There were a lot of
reveiws of these shows a while ago with set lists but I've lost
them...

Actually, once you write something, it is automatically copyrighted under
US Law. For example, every paper you write for a class is copyrighted under
your name, and is legally binding, without filling in any paperwork.
However, it's just really hard to prove who wrote something first, which
is why there are copyright laws. But I've heard, and know of a few people,
who have either written a manuscript, or a computer program, or something
similar, and then mailed it to themselves and left the postmark on. This is
proof that on that date, whatever is enclosed has been created by you. It's
the "poor man's way" to copyright something, but it does hold up in court.
So if someone here did try to pass ACOS off as their own, even if the original
version wasn't copyrighted "legally", I'm sure it still wouldn't float.

How I got into DT. When I&A was released, I read a great article about the
boys, and a five star review in MEAT magazine, a Canadian heavy metal mag.
They compared them to Rush and Queensryche, so I thought I'd give them a
try. Well, to use a often overused cliche............the rest is history.

I've been a member of the ytsejam for about 6 months, and this is my
first post! Anyway, my friend and I (both being MAJOR DT fans) have had this
joke about who each member of DT would play what characters from movies, just
by the way they look. John Petrucci would be perfect for Elliot Nes. John
Myung would have to play some ninja in a Bruce Lee type movie. Mike Portnoy
would look great as some bad guy in a western movie, and to the best of our
conclusions, James LaBrie would make a great Data from Star Trek : ) (total
sarcasm!!!). We couldn't come up for a Kevin Moore one (as this discussion
was in the days of Kevin Moore). What do you think? Any good ideas?

Okay, here's a question for you die hard DT fans:
I've seen a disc called "Practicing Musicians Vol III" with DT's
Bombay Vindaloo on it. Can anyone tell if this is the same version that's
on LatM? This is one of my absolute favorite DT songs, if it's a different
version (maybe studio?) then I must have it. Life would not be complete
without it. DT rules. (okay, we all already know that...)
The thread out there going on about DT becoming an in band...
I wouldn't worry about DT changing their style were they to become
huge. They're too good for all that. I can understand the fears of a great
band becoming popular and going downhill, though usually I think it's the
other way around: bands go bad, and then people listen to them, because
the masses tend to like bad music. An example? Take Soul Asylum. Their
album "And the Horse They rode in on" is one of the greatest albums of all
time (IMO), but their newer stuff isn't worthy to be pissed on. Truly, it
just sucks (IMO again). They were one of my absolute favorite bands before
Grave Dancers Union, now I don't even like to admit I listen to them.
anyone who hasn't heard their earlier stuff needs to know that they were a
great band with a lot of originality and flair. Now they're bleached out
repititious musical diarrhea.
I've heard people say that Metallica sold out and became popular...
I usually hit people that say that, but it is a common opinion in my
experience.
I guess it'll be alright though... I just bought Satriani's "Time
Machine" because a friend sayed that JP sounds exaclty like him. I guess I
see a few similarities, but not too many. Does JP list Satriani as an
influence? What do the two think of each other? Regardless, Time Machine
is unbelievable, I can't recomend it enough...

so what's the deal with DT and Canada? I live in Ottawa, just four-five
hours drive from Toronto. DT has played in Toronto before and I believe
they'll be there again. Why not let some other cities see them live?
In fact, do Toronto, swing up thru Ottawa and continue along to Montreal
and/or Quebec City, then pop across the border again to play more U.S.
dates... or try out Canada's eastern provinces - they're crying out for
some decent shows too.
i can't justify driving to Toronto for a gig in a club or whatever DT
does. But if they wanna keep their fans primed, they ought to venture
to more than just one stop up here. It's not ALL SNOW north of Toronto
you know? (not yet, anyway).

Why did you so OBVIOUSLY contradict yourself? Stereotyping is bad, huh, and you
never do it, right? Then why did you group ALL Christians together into one

take kindly to your remarks. As for O.J. and Susan Smith, yes, I personally
have asked that be forgiven, if they did it, and in Susan Smith's case, that
she repent because she DID do it. But, if they did do it, each of them, by

Well i see no one on here went and you guys missed out it was great it
was 3 hours or so and just great although he had a tech problem with
his dat half way through erotomania but he fixed it and all went well
after that,th first song he played i forget the title but it was
written for his wife nothing anyones heard before,very pink floyd
sounding, then he talked about how he uses other instraments i.e.
violin and piano and drums to help influence him,he knew what he was
talking about,he took alot of qusetions and was very nice,among the
things brought out were metropolis pt2 should be on the next album but
it still is not written,he is not working on a solo album but might in
the future,and his wife is pregnant with twins a girl and a boy cool
huh now for the cool part he played a dat of what he called rough stuff
that may be on the next album and this stuff is VERY different from
anything weve heard from dt very different drums on this almost techno
but not in a bad way,it was pretty cool so the next album should sound
pretty cool,also i asked him if it was derick that played on all the
stuff he played through his dat and he said yes and i have to admit
derick sounds better than kev,his stuff is more old school prog and
more lush and soothing than kevins stuff not a knock against kevin just
my opinion, derick did erotomania on the dat and it sounded great, so i
think we have nothing to worry about from derick he'll do fine
if anyone did go e mail me id love a copy of this as i didnt tape it

I have had the misfortune of reading an awful lot of stuff on this
list that has nothing to do with music, DT or otherwise. A lot of
people are beginning to write to complain about it all,
unfortunately, this really just creates MORE messages that are
irrelevant.
Now for the token DT content:
I had the very great fortune of going to see DT shortly after I
bought the album I&W (which at the time, I had thought was their
first). I was at a Kansas concert (my original favorite group -
someone mentioned it would be great to have one prog-video TV station
just to play videos of progressive rock. Talk about dreams and
wonderful things...), and they announced that Dream Theater would be
playing the next week.
The reason I mention the Kansas concert (besides shamelessly
plugging for them :) is because a Kansas concert tends to be a bit
lower in volume than a normal rock concert. You can actually "hear"
the music - all part of it. You don't get that "wall" of noise
effect that you get from most other concerts. Well, the Dream
Theater concert was simply the loudest concert I ever went to. It
was physically painful. I was able to appreciate how amazing the
band played, and at times (at my favorite parts of the songs) I was
able to enjoy it despite my pain, but overall it was too much.
I've been to Rush concerts, Metallica, Yes and others, so I have
certainly been to some loud concerts, but nothing like the DT one.
I'm wondering, is this common for them? It wouldn't prevent me from
going, but I'd hate to have to be wearing ear-plugs.

4. Mercy Fuck! - I liked the Bafu Vai lyrics - it made a point.
I also liked the Sistine Chapel comparisons - that was exactly what I thought

5. Regarding DT Music/Lyric Style Criticisms by others:
Masturbation - Cool - I like guitar-based musical masturbation
as opposed to other kinds.
Squeelies - I like them too.
Wah Pedal - Give me more.
Prog Metal is Passe/De Classe -
Don't tell that to all us freaks spending our $ on it.
Too Many Notes - Isn't that a Steve Morse song?
6. ACOS review
I am not a musician. It took me a while to listen to I&W without wanting to
skip Metropolis. Maybe my ears are improving, but ACOS seemed listenable
(away put your dictionary - I mean you no harm) quicker. Perhaps, my ears
hear things that aren't there - but I think there IS a common musical theme
throughout the song. I like any and all versions of this song - I hope
no one minds.
My wife's review of CD:
1. It would be a lot better if it was simply the acoustic guitar thing.
2. Yuck. Elton John
3. Never heard of it - OK except that it's DT.
4. Wow - maybe I should listen to the Led Zeppelin versions - Nah.
5. COWS - Boy I sure hope they don't start playing violins.
LTS - Wow, you're right; they're talented - even if its misdirected.
She has broad (not intended as a bad sexist pun) musical tastes -
she likes anything done in 4/4. :)

7. Cygnus comments - If you expect crap from a bootleg you won't be
disappointed
when you get what you paid way too much for. I happen to like it and will
continue to patronize the Limelight Music Co.
8. Bootleg quality questions (possible rerun):
There are two tiers of bootlegs: 1. audience-recorded and 2. recorded
through other means (soundboard, radio broadcast). If you don't like one
audience-recorded bootleg you probably won't like any regardless of its
relative quality. I recommend that Mike Backof identify which boots are
audience-recorded. Since I don't really like aud-boots, I would only buy
them for bands of which I am a fanatic (sorry about the proper grammar).

10. I signed up for the jam around issue 750. Since then, I've gone back and
read a lot of back issues (Don't ask me how - its GET YTSEJAM YTSEJAM.XXX
sent to YTSEJAM-REQUEST@ARASTAR.COM - thank me Ken) to make sure I didn't
ask any FAQs that weren't in the FAQ. I noticed there were a lot of threads
based on misinformation (Awake CD = Lie single, your Mass you fuck,etc).
Isn't anyone afraid these kind of discussions may damage our credibility
as a reliable focus group with DT + mgmt.
11. Penn State Wiener guy with the 6:00 interpretation - you are brave. I tend
to keep my thoughts to myself (unlike this post) so I don't get flamed by
all the people who are THE ONLY ONES THAT TRULY UNDERSTAND THE REAL
MEANING OF NEIL PEART LYRICS. Maybe I shouldn't be so cowardly; I could
relate to what you were thinking.
12. NDTC - Please keep this up. So far I have been brave enough to buy Cairo,
Magellan, and Shadow Gallery based only on positive comments (not even
reviews) on the Jam. I really like two of those - sorry, Jen.
13. Who Am I - age 30 (old), male, computer-professional?, married (two kids),
conservative but open-minded (yes, there is such a thing), living in
EBFE (Columbus OH) anxiously awaiting Sept 96 - probable time-frame of next
DT visit here, this is a guess - I don't have any inside info from the
band so don't ask.
14. Bootleg Sources:
Best - ytsejam traders (you can always flame them - relatively free)
Mike Portnoy - if you know him - which I don't - so don't ask.
record show (on-hand inventory + prices can't be beat)
Good - Mike Bahr (if you can stand the agonizing wait between releases)
Tim Lodge (where does he get this stuff?)
hole-in-the-wall-university-record-stores (if you have time)
Ranjit (takes forever to respond to req - sends stuff quick tho)

Avoid- CD Europe (send us your money now so that we can collect interest
forever waiting for your selections to become un-available).
15. A vs B vs C
Some days I like I&W most, some days I like Awake most, some days I like
demos, some days I actually like other bands better. I really depends on my
mood. Interesting, but JP is the only thing about Dream Theater I would put
on my best of (Best song, album, group, guitarist, etc) list. Yet,
somehow, DT remains an complete obsession to me.
16. Kev vs Derek
This is probably grounds for execution, but I view keys as
background/accompaniment to the rest of DT's music. It is MY OPINION that
the other members of the band share this view and this is why Kevin left.
I like Eve, WFS, and Kev's lyrical contribution but I probably wouldn't
buy a SDV-type album even if it had JP. As far as I my musically-limited
ears can tell, Derek can do the dual key/guitar soloing just fine. I also
like Derek's obvious blues/jazz influence, and I'm hoping to hear this on
the next album.
17. Questions from me:
1. I like JP, Hoey, Satch, EVH, Norum, Morse, Schon, Gillis, Vai, etc.
Electric/Acoustic doesn't make a difference to me. Will I like Craig
Chaquico - Acoustic ... cds? I do like the recent Schon new-age release,
but it sounded like rock to me.
2. Do Shadow Gallery or Cairo have any other albums?
3. Are artists in #2 Christian Rock? Is Magna Carta a Christian label?
I don't want to buy other stuff on the Magna Carta label if it's only
quality is its religion.
4. Is anyone tired of reading all this crap? I am.
