Would that be "Post Momentary Affliction"? I don't know if that's
the same symbol, but then I would have to see that album cover
again. I never knew it represented the Trinity. I am a Christian
myself and I am also a DT-fan. I always had a hard time listening to
DT's lyrics, because most of the time they're quite depressing.
Sometimes I think, I wish these guys knew Gods love, then they would
have much more positive lyrics. It's cool that they use the Trinity
symbol, but I would have liked it if they also lived for it.
    Later!

In Queen's Bo-Rap the solo done by JohnP is at 2.42, BEFORE the
'opera' section. The DT section comes in at 4.06, AFTER the
'opera' section. 'So you think you can ...' is at 4.20 with NO
    solo to follow.

I will be on holiday with my girlfriend in LA and/or SF in November. Are there

STEVE MORSE is the attraction here as he is one of John Petrucci's
main influences, the only reason I am going !

When Joe Satriani did 'Perfect Strangers' live with Deep Purple
there was no guitar solo, it was a keys solo. Joe did do some
intricate work 'between the lines' though. Does anyone know if the
original Deep Purple version had a guitar or keys solo ?

Thanks to those who responded about Marc Bonilla. I do have both
his albums, but wondered how he was rated and how widely known he
is (I am in the UK). Glad to see that someone else thinks he is
             so good.

Oh man. I couldn't agree more! Personally, I think the production is
excellent (but then again, treble and bass knobs are enough for me. Middle
just throws me right off). I like the snare. I love the whole song. Every
bit of it. From the second I heard it until the end. I love ACOS. I also
remember hearing Awake for the first time. My immediate thoughts were: This
is fantastic. What a treat to finally hear a great rock band with a really
strong vocalist. What excellent production. No over produced but just
sounding great. When I finally got I&W, I loved it too. But I'm such a
major DT fan and they're such an influence on me that they can do no wrong.
Maybe that's a character flaw in me, I don't know. If I really like
someone/thing/band they have to really screw up for me to notice the bad
    things about them.

I will come in with an exact opposite reaction. Counterparts is my favorite
Rush album since Power Windows (have I mentioned this before? ). Roll the
Bones and Hold Your Fire are also very good, but RtB is one of my less
    favorites.

Mike, I don't know why you're losing interest in Rush if you've been a fan
for years but I just want to say that I lost interest when Presto came out.
I listened to it 1 1/2 times didn't go to the concert and didn't buy RtB or
Counterparts until last year (missing the tours). I really regret it. So
I'd say to hang in there and at least go see them or you might regret it
    later.

I would have to go with FALSE. Unless, of course, DT is made up of
uninformed, people ignorant of the workings of today's society and the
business of the music industry - which I think is also false. When you
write a song, you have it copyrighted. You don't write a tune, go out and
perform it live, let boots get distributed and never have it copyrighted.
That's foolish. I think that copyright pertains to this recorded version.
If the boots aren't copyrighted, then you could legally, perform the Subcon
version of ACOS and claim it as your own. In fact, you could then copyright
it and it would be yours. If you did it before the copyright of the studio
ACOS, you might even be able to sue DT. So I'd say that the old versions
    have been copyrighted since 1989.

It seems people are worried about DT becoming Green Day. I would cringe if a
couple of my friends who are into the whole MTV/Offspring/Bush deal started
saying how great DT was and went to their concerts, etc. Not because I don't
want DT to touch many people, but because in three years they'll talk about
how "warped" they were to like DT and gridlock those of us who were STILL into
them. I don't want DT to become another New Kids on the Block in their minds.
As far as the band being arena-rockers: COOL! If they stay DT and the world
comes to them, no problem. Even when the world leaves we'll just be back where
we are now with a Jam of 1000 and a real connection with the group! I'm not
worried about them changing their sound to go mainstream. They'd have done
that by now if it was to happen. LATER-

NICE guitar! I was expecting just a show piece, but this guitar has

I've been using as my main axe for the last 6 years.\

BTW, got it at Sam Ash in New Haven, CT for a great price -- $1049.

WARNING:THIS POST HAS MORE THAN ONE PARAGRAPH!!!

All this talk about actively keeping DT underground is total bullshit.

Remember Metallica's "black" album? It pleased some long-time fans, it
pissed a lot of them off, and it won them some new fans. (now there are
those who like the new stuff and hate the old stuff, and they're not
everyone's favorite people). I love Metallica as much as anyone else.
Despite what I think of that last album (I don't hate it, I could just
think of other CDs to buy before that one), I still have the old ones to
listen to and I still enjoy them. So if such a thing ever happened to
DT, and the "sellout" album becomes the long-time-fan's least favorite,
WE WILL STILL HAVE ALL THE GREAT MUSIC THEY MADE UP TO THAT POINT!!!!

Secondly, the average DT fan is often a person of above-average
intelligence. Just about eveyone I know that's into DT also appreciates
many different types of music. DT fans can appreciate the finer things
that the music industry has to offer. DT fans have good taste. (and I'm
not saying that because we all love the same band.) I'm sure that all of
your encounters with DT fans have caused you to be turned on to other
bands/types of music - not just rock, and not just on the 'Jam.

Lastly, the teeming millions are too stupid to understand DT. The
mentality out there among the infidels is that Billy Joe is a better
guitar player than John Petrucci because Green Day went multi-platinum
and DT never gets played on the radio. That mindset is not the mindset
that would give DT a second listen, let alone a first listen!

Those are the people that would make DT Kurt Loder's new favorite band.
(and we all know that if Kurt Loder likes it, then it's good.) Those
people are incapable of understanding music of such depth and dimension.
Most people aren't willing to "stretch their ears, open and non-
withstanding." (so I butcher some Echolyn for ya 'Jammers too)

I just want DT to continue to make music, regardless of what new
directions they take. The only problem that I would like to address is
the blank stares that we all get at the mention of DT, like if your
favorite band is one people have never heard of, you're some sort of
freak or outcast. (Adam Cook could probably tell you about that)

Check ya all later. I'm heading to Ace Music in Miami to confirm what I
    heard about the JPM100..

Why do people keep insisting that it's a young Portnoy on the ACoS cover?
Police extrapolating his face at a younger age? That's like saying that
it's Petrucci on the I&W cover -- but in little girl's clothes! :)
(Well, that little girl actually gets some credit for I&W -- and she was
    in the AD video, too.)

And I, for one, fuckin' LOVE ACoS!! Little Mike or no! :)

A few 'jams ago someone asked for suggestions on what Yes albums to listen
to... I agree with most of the recommendations:
Fragile, The Yes Album, and Close to the Edge are all excellent choices, listen
to them often myself... But, what about 90125???
I know it has 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' on it which is probably not well liked
because it became popular, but there are some great tunes on this disk!!!
'Hold On', 'City of Love', and 'Changes' absolutely rock! And 'Hearts' is
an excellent song which I feel is very similar to DT's style! Seriously!
90125 is full of great stuff! You can't go wrong!!!
(Unless you're into that I hate Trevor & Tony thing... just kiddin' :)

    Oh, about this whole OJ/African-American/Whatever-the-hell-it-is-thing...

It's terrible, the Africans were sold into slavery by their own chieftains...
It's terrible, Jews were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis...
It's terrible, the American Indians were absolutely screwed by the 'White Man'
It's terrible, the Spanish conquistadors destroyed the Mayan Civilization!
It's terrible, the Spanish conquistadors destroyed the Aztec Civilization!
It's terrible, the Romans threw Christians to the lions for entertainment...
It's terrible, the Japanese conducted experiments on Chinese and Vietnamese...

I'm sorry if I missed anyone here, but isn't there another list for this type
of stuff? Can't the people upset by this write to each other personally? Do
people have to be upset because more members of the 'jam don't respond to some
of the comments made on these issues? I'm more than happy to discuss any of
this with anyone who cares to speak about it... But I thought this list was
about music and the greatest band to come around in a long time... Not about
OJ or Cochran or Hitler or any of that stuff.

    Sorry 'bout that....

Hey! Does anyone know anything about the release for '96??? Does anyone
know when the guys are going to head back to the studio? When will the
first trickles of information seep into the 'jam?
    Just wondering......

    Hello Jammers,

I think part of my problem is seeing Dream Theater in
HammerJack's last time out on the Awake tour. The place was so crowded I
couldn't get though the crowd to even purchase a beer, let alone to go to
the bathroom. I think they need to play venues they can fill, but not
overfill. I can agree with Bafu Vai about Stadiums and Arenas causing
acoustic problems, few bands can get the sound right in these venues, but
it CAN be done. Van Halen usually has good arena sound, Rush usually
doesn't. Pink Floyd has no trouble getting a stadium to sound wonderful.
Plus Dream Theater had a much cleaner sound at Pier 6 (outdoor venue) in
Baltimore when I saw them for the Images and Words tour than in the club.
Plus Pier 6 is a bigger venue and wasn't as crowded even with similar
numbers of people in attendance. King Crimson plays theaters and the
sound was great for the two shows I saw on the Thrak tour. Plus I had
no trouble getting to the beer for any of these other shows. <grin>

So I stand by my point that DT should move from clubs to venues that can
hold all of the fans. Sorry Bafu Vai, you know its nothing personal, but
    I must concur.

    Later,

    Mike

dt is playing at the malibu in lido beach on december 28th. got my tickets last weekend while home from school. they are 12.50, and while i don't know if they reserve tickets for you (their number is 516 432-1600), you can find out. and someone at the malibu also told me that ticketmaster would be selling some tickets. (i believe they did it for the june show). i am still looking for any info regarding their gig in connecticut, and i would very greatly appreciate if someone sent me info. i asked for it a bit back, but i got no reply.

also, someone mentioned whatqueensryche to start with, and i would like to suggest anything except for "warning." there's so much awesome stuff on all the other stuff, that it's really tough to pick a particular album to go with. maybe "rage."

in addition, my bonus listening pick of the week is the screaming headless torsos. what an awesome band. it's funk, metal, reggae, and jazz. they take miles davis' blue and green and add lyrics and a metal chorus. it's nuts. the singer reminds me quite a bit of george clinton (pfunk). please get their cd. talk about a band that needs support.

and, if jimmy from binghamton sees this, please email me. i'm here at bing too and am quite surprised to see some binghamton dt fans.

    thanks, and see ya. david

A lot of issues to address, I guess. I know half of you read that sentence and say "aw shit, will you SHUT the fuck UP Mike, you blather a lot" and the other half of you are looking for my hidden jokes, but on to the matters at hand.

Has anyone received their Acoustic Dreams yet?? I started sending them out LAST Monday, for cryin' out loud. The silence is deafening. I almost fear that people think it... gasp... Sucks. Please say it ain't so, folks. Or, I guess, say it _is_ so if that's what you thought. But please, say _something_ so I know these things are getting delivered. :)

A new AD update will be out on Thursday. I'm recovering from a flu and then it's class cram for midterms, and I should be able to give a full update by then. I'm getting a lot of orders... I'm surprised at just how many Jammers are out there...

The next CD, When Dream and Today Unite, has had its master created, and it currently runs 94 minutes. I have to, obviously cut it down. A lot of that is Ytsejam WITH drum solo vs. without, To Live Forever WITH Moon Bubbles or MB alone, Only a Matter of Time WITH Tyrant or without. I'm going to try and cram as much coherent music into the 75 minutes allotted to me, so my master DAT is about 19 minutes too long. I'll let EVERYONE know when it's time to begin the orders. Don't send orders yet becuase it's gonna be awhile before WDATU comes out. And Antiquities (the winning title) will follow in the early 1996. Oh yes, to those who liked the title "Scenes from a Memory"... I still like it and will probably use it on a future release.

OJ, race, and gays: I usually decline to talk about these things because, as a Straight White Male there is a tendency for my opinions to be characterized as invalid or worthless before I even utter them. However I bear no animosity toward any race, creed, or sexual orientation. I _do_ however disagree strongly with a lot of the political agendae of minority activist groups. Is OJ guilty? Well, he fled from the cops with a passport and a wad of cash... you tell _me_. Was he guilty because he was black? Hell no. Had it been another football star such as Tony Dorsett or Joe Montana that had done it, I would still think they were guilty. But the LA police screwed up, and OJ is off the hook. Even though I think he did it, I'm glad to see him free because IMHO the strained, agonizing, glaringly ludicrous year-long kangaroo court he was subjected to, more than makes up for any sentence he might have received. WRT to the arguments about racism... yes it exists and I find it absurd, to say the least. Think about it in this context: I'm a college student who also works full-time, who also does CD projects, who's also trying to cope with bills, relationships, a social life, and my own dreams of success, and there's no time to do half of that. What sort of idiot in this sort of position decides it would be a good idea to hate a significant portion of the population for no real reason? I sure don't. I need all the friends I can get, and that counts for all my black, hispanic, oriental, and white friends. "Yeah, I dunno, I'm having a hard time just making ends meet... why don't I make enemies out of all black people just for laughs?" - ridiculous.

Yikes! That was a long paragraph. Well here's another. Alternative music, selling out, mainstream. With the release of a CD as progressive as A Change of Seasons, we can safely say on the home front that Dream Theater isn't selling out any time soon. It's ironic that trends have become so bitingly swift, short-lived, and powerful. I don't like it, but then again, I'm not setting the trends. Some bands give in and sell out... i.e. Aerosmith. Can you blame them? They could buy a football team if they wanted to, with the money they're making. But there's also something to be said for integrity. On that note, there's Pearl Jam, who decided to NOT sell out by making such fringe music that their real fans stopped liking it. Shame, too, since I liked Ten way before it was popular (thought Alive reminded me of Rush, except for the vocals) and hated both VS and Vitalogy. Then there are bands that do their own thing a bit TOO dedicatedly... Fates Warning. I really, really like that band and they play wonderful music. But nobody's going to know about it until they write something that hooks a person right away. Just because a song is easily liked dosen't mean it sucks... in a way, that's part of how good it is, since truly great songs can be appreciated immediately. Look at Pull Me Under and how it got most of us into DT. Look at Limelight, Subdivisions, Closer to the Heart, and Freewill by Rush. There's no question that they are VERY easy to like, and yet are not considered sellout songs. As soon as Fates finds that balance between artistic integrity and accessibility, they'll strike gold. Finally, there are the bands that do their own thing their own way, damn the torpedoes, and yet succeed... so far I know of but a few. Rush. Van Halen. Tori Amos. Live. (though the jury is still out on the young Pennsylvanians.) All commentary, whether you agree with me or you're wrong, is welcome. :) (kidding about that 'wrong' bit, for the humor impaired.)

If you lay down a Black Lotus, Sol Ring, 4 Black Vices, an Island, and play Ancestral Recall on your opponent, they die before their first draw phase with 24 points of Vice damage during their upkeep.

Mercy Fuck... to be or not 2-B? Well, on the one hand, I like knowing that it was originally in there, as it gives a great perspective on what Mike meant to say in that part of the song. It wasn't there on the original version from the Images & Words sessions, though a lot of other parts of the final product that weren't on the Sub version DID show up during the IAW sessions. (don't ask, the tape isn't mine.) Sympathy says the same thing essentially, and Dream Theater gets to stay with Rush in the realm of "has the integrity not to swear and yet still packs a powerful message" category. For better or for worse, it's in there, and it's an issue DT will NOT have to regret many years from now.

Boy, you Japanese Ytsejammers have AWESOME VCRs!! I got a copy of that Urawa video from Kaoru some time ago, and the picture quality was staggering... what a great, clear, crisp image! And this was from a copy, not a master tape! I want some of those VCRs... the ones we get here in America are not so good for video duplications at all.

Speaking of which, though a few Japanese 'Jammers have already sent orders for Acoustic Dreams, any others should e-mail Kaoru Kobayashi as she is going to do a big group order like we did for Subconscious, so that you will get your CDs faster and they can be mailed from Arizona to Japan all in one box. I have reserved 40 CDs for Kaoru to distribute, and she says she has 20 orders so far.

Once there was an ox who worked day in and day out and never got to rest, and he was tiring and his joints would frequently buckle, and he came to the stable one evening blathering and huffing, complaining about his plight. A donkey in a nearby stall heard the ox complaining and offered his advice. "Do you want to rest tomorrow?" The ox nodded. "Then don't eat your fodder tonight, and don't move tomorrow. The farmer will whip you with his stick and yell and curst but you must not budge. The farmer will then think you're sick and let you rest a few days." "That's a good idea! I will try it. Thank you, friend." And the next day the ox did just that. He starved himself so that the farmer would see the untouched fodder in his trough, and then sat and snorted when the yoke was set about his neck. The farmer whipped him and lashed him until he bled, but finall gave up, declared that the ox was sick, and led him back to the barn. The next day, the farmer needed to get work done, and so took the donkey to the fields and worked him weary. The donkey knew it was his own fault, and concocted a scheme to get the ox to work again. When he got back to the barn, the ox heaped praise on him. "Thanks to you, I have rested all day and eaten well. Truly you have the best of minds. Thank you for this idea!" But the donkey replied in a whisper. "I heard the farmer say he would slaughter you for fat if you can't earn your keep! You'd better work tomorrow!" The ox's eyes widened and he thanked the donkey. "Thank you so much for the warning! I owe you one." Not knowing that the donkey just wanted to get out of work, the ox slept, and then delivered a hard day of work in the field. Meanwhile, the donkey was grazing in the field when a bolt of lightning struck a nearby tree, which fell on the donkey, killing it. The moral of the story? Don't be an ass.
