    Hi there Jammers,
My votes for best not dt bands are,
    1.queensryche
    2.Rush
    3.Van Halen
    4.Def Leppard
    5.Boston

On another note, If anyone is going to see Mike P. at one of his
clinics could you ask him if he knows anything about Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia,
and find out if the band has anything to do with that professional music
fraternity. Their Majesty symbol looks remarkably like the greek letters
of Phi Mu Alpha and I know of a lot of people here at Fredonia who would
really like to know if they are brothers. If not our chapter would like to
make them honerary members. Please respond to me personally if you know
    anything about this. Bradley8314@fredonia.edu

    Greetings,

Did somebody ask about echolyn (the band uses all lower case)? I
will glady share my opinions, considering they are one of my favorite
bands. To begin with, they do not sound much like DT. I have run into
many problems trying to describe them because I have honestly never heard
a band that sounds the way they do. A friend of mine, however, upon first
hearing portions of As the World said they sounded like a wigged-out
version of Kansas. He is a music major and said that it sounds like they
were composition students who took nearly every style of music they'd ever
heard and dumped it into each song. I think that sounds pretty accurate.
I would like to go on with descriptions, but I imagine many people have
already skipped the rest of this message. If anyone REALLY wants to hear
more, e-mail me personally. I have all of their albums (some are copies).

Could somebody please enlighten me as to what U2 song DT plays at
the Ronnie Scott's show? I have figured out all the other songs they play
    but this one.

Regarding the whole Metallica/Megadeth thing. Personally, my
favorite albums by these bands are ...And Justice For All and Rust In
Peace, respectively. I consider both to be the most progressive sounding
either band has released and I would guess that plays some role in my
fondness of them. I think I am the only person, outside of my group of
friends, who likes ...And Justice For All best. I know there is a
distinct lack of bass, but the guitar tone simply rules and the drumming
is incredible. Rust In Peace is one of the best thrash albums ever, if
not the best, IMO. I think CtE is a fading period towards Mellodeth. I
have a copy of Youthanasia, but I have trouble listening to it knowing
what they have done in the past. I don't think the fact that Mustaine
quit drugs has anything to do with mellowing out because he had already
quit before Rust In Peace was recorded. That's why there was a 3 year gap
between it and the previous album, he and the other David were in rehab.
    Well, thats' my $.02.

I am also looking for a really good quality copy of a Fates
Warning show. I am not a huge fan (I have Inside Out and Parallels) but I
saw them open for DT and liked their live show better than their studio
sound. I would like Monument and Point of View to be on there and
possibly some older (more progressive) stuff (maybe Ivory Gate of Dreams).
Anyone who could help me out, please e-mail me personally.

    Well,
I heard the TDoE version of ACoS yesterday and I thought I'd just
    post my humble opinion.
I like the new version better.

1.First of all, I really like the acoustic intro
2.The "innocence caressing me" part in the new one has a much better
    melody than the old.
3.I do like the Carpe Diem "PLEASE DON'T GO!!"
4.The second megariff after PDG,IMO, is too fast. It has more of a
    groove slow.
5.Another World old version IMO doesn't hold a candle to the new.
No "Oh come let us adore him"'s. There (unless I've gone deaf)
isn't even a "mercy fuck"! They really improved it for the studio
    version.
6.I like the old Inevitable Summer, especially the neoclassical
part, although, I love the kickass riff at 18:?? in the new version.
7.The old ending doesn't have half the emotion as the new. And I
agree that the Please Don't Go doesn't much make sense there.
8.Finally, I like the acoustic outro.

BUT, I bet that my opinion would be completely different had I benn
listening to the TDoE version three times a day before I ever heard the new
    version.

BTW, SEND IN YOUR DT INTERP QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless, that is,
you don't want to know A SINGLE THING ABOUT WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING IN DT
    MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh boy! Metallica and Megadeth. My area of expertise!

    Metallica Stuff:

I don't think Metallica sold out one bit. "Metallica" wasn't the
least bit weaker than the other albums (which I love). It just wasn't quite
as complex. Music doesn't have to be complex in order to kick ass. This
way it dragged in tons more fans (including me). BTW, has anybody else
besides me heard the new song, "2x4"? It's great. It's a hard 6/8 rocker
with lots of wah-ing. OK, a little TOO much wah-ing, but it's not recorded
in stone yet. I'm really, really, really looking forward to the next album.

    Megadeth Stuff:

Countdown to Extinction is a drastic change from Rust in Peace. I
attribute that to the fact that Dave Mustaine was finally sober enough to
realize what he was writing. Anyone else ever notice that "Skin 'o My
Teeth" and "High Speed Dirt" are pretty much the same song with different
lyrics? If they sold out at all, it would be Youthanasia. Take "The
Killing Road" for example. It starts out with a really mean, chugging riff.
Then all the sudden he adds a second half to it that makes it sound
incredibly wimpy. Maybe trying to get more fans than just metal heads?
On most of the CtE and Y songs it's just a heavy riff that usually
kicks ass and then a sorta wimpy chorus. Metallica kept it strong the whole
way through on "Metallica". Don't get me wrong, though, I like all the
Megadeth stuff. Just some more than others, that's all.
I will now procede to shut the hell up.

Well, I can recommend a band that is strikingly similar to the
Galactic Cowboys, King's X, Atomic Opera (another Wilde Silas group
like GC and KX), and Faith No More...and that is PRECIOUS DEATH. The
only clincher is that they are what some would call a "Christian
band." Oh, don't worry, their lyrics aren't to much different from
King's X and Galactic Cowboys lyrics; so you won't be "getting the
    Bible shoved down your throat"...

They are on Metro One Records and are also distributed (probably not
much) by Sony to the "mainstream." They have 2 albums- SOUTHPAW and
IF YOU MUST. Southpaw is the better of the two and a good start.
They are very similar to GC, with also similarities to the other 2
Wilde Silas groups- KX and AO. The vocals remind me of Michael
    Patton of Faith No More...

Yeah, I agree with the guy who posted something to this.

TAB, as we know it, was invented in the 16th Century <possibly the 15th> for
lutes and is only an approximation.
We can argue until time's end about this, but I believe that a trained ear and
mind are a musician's best weapon, if you will, in transcribing.

What I'm saying is I disagree with him about the point of "not even a musician
can transcribe his own work accurately." This is a double-edged sword.

In one instance, a musician who is well versed in harmony and theory CAN most
definately transcribe a work, others or his own, with a very small error margin.
I'm currently working on WDADU and ACOS, and weekly bring my work to my theory
teacher. He sees no errors in my transcriptions, thus far.

On the other side of the coin, what I perceive as a specific time signature,
    someone else may not...again a double-edged sword. <Ie. is it 4/4 or 12/8? I
know, bad example. I refer back to "The Mirror" time signature debates.> I felt
I had done it right, proceeded to buy the book and found it matched entirely. A
member on the jam proceeded to rip me to shreds about my time signatures, his
name won't be mentioned. This boils down to how much theory knowledge I have vs.
my adversary. I studied in England for my Master's degree in Classical Guitar
performance. How much training has he had? I can't answer that fairly, I don't
    know.

The small margin of error comes in two places:
1> One's knowledge of harmony and theory over another's, transcribing the
    same work and,.
2> Where I play something, may not be where the guitarist plays it on the
    fretboard.

And since I never got in on this thread, one last thing...
I'm very pissed off at some people here. DT is, without a doubt, the best
band out today. They are gods among us pitiful mortal musicians. What a bunch of
fucking ingrates you people are, the ones to criticize <and you know who you
are.> Dream Theater gave us, the on-line "Ytse-Jammers", many thanks for helping
make ACOS a reality and you people criticize the song. Are you insane? I'll bet
half the people criticizing them aren't even musicians, either. ACOS is DT's
    BEST work to date.

Oh, yeah. About Dream Theater - For the first time in a long time....IT'S ABOUT
    MUSIC!

I am asking $15.00 which INCLUDES shipping in the US if anyone is interested.

i know there are changes that weren't in the original ACOS, and

about Dimebag Darrell. His playing is absolutely staggering, but I'm
convinced he was sent here from the Carribbean Sea back when pirates
roamed the earth. He's vulgar as hell like Malmsteen is arrogant, and
while that might offend my conscience, it makes no difference to my ears.

I was one of the people that said Malmsteen getting first place was like
calling Goran Ivanesevic "The Greatest Tennis Player In The World" because
he can serve the ball 138 mph. I love Goran as much as I love Yngwie, but
I don't feel that either of them cover enough aspects of their respective
fields to be called "The Best." I guess it's about time Malmsteen got some
actual first-place awards considering how long he's been around and how
long people/critics have put him down, but I suppose the main reason I
wrote what I did was because of who got fourth place behind Malmsteen. :)

    > P.S. Don't get me wrong...Petrucci is very very good.

You needn't say this on the Ytsejams. It's redundant. :)

I'll admit it right here. "Purple" is one of my favorite albums. In my
opinion it's the best-sounding album I own. Unlike "Awake," the vocals are
never so soft you can't hear them, and the BASS is audible. Not only that,
but the producer/band manage to equalize three guitar tracks, drums, bass,
and multiple vocal tracks on every song perfectly. The entire album is
packed with incredible harmony-work. These guys have a brilliant future,
if Weiland ever gets out of jail.

As for Pearl Jam, "Ten" is a masterpiece, "Vs." is alright, and "Vitalogy"
is one of their worst. Quick revision: "Vitalogy" is one of THE worst. I
will not be purchasing future material by these guys.

I don't own an acoustic guitar, and I don't play through the clean
channel, so your transcription wasn't really something I was ever going to
play. But that's not the main reason I'm replying to your post...

This is silly. Okay, Brian, if you want to surrender, go ahead. I'm still
in. Buck was making a comment to the entire Internet. Read it again, he
didn't say "specifically the Ytsejams." So that means that basically ALL
tab-writers who have ever written something on the Internet can be upset
with him. Buck wasn't targeting just YOU, he was making what Mike Bahr
    would call a "sweeping generalization."

    > As well, I have DT's Mind Control bootleg, the Ronnie Scott's show (the
    > whole thing).

This is going to surprise a lot of people, and I'm very surprised no one
on this entire list has mentioned it yet.

Do me a favor, Kyle. Listen to "Perfect Strangers" on your Ronnie Scott's
show cassette/dat, then listen to the version on ACOS. You may notice the
James LaBrie on the RS cassette is not the same James LaBrie singing on
the ACOS cd. I'm serious. Those two vocal tracks are just not the same. It
blew me away when I listened to both of them the night I got ACOS two
weeks ago, and somehow not a single 'Jammer has said anything about it.

Whereas on ACOS, the solo-keyboard intro to the song is completely by
itself with nothing else going on, the one on the "complete" Ronnie
Scott's show is talked over for several seconds by LaBrie...which made me
remember how the band recorded all the instruments direct with their own
recording devices, and how the band, unlike the bootleg-recording, did not
record via a microphone on the soundboard or anything like that...

This causes me to wonder. If all of the instruments were recorded direct,
and not from a single microphone which is obviously the case in the RS
bootleg-recording... parts... could... have... been... altered... in...
    a... studio...

Before I am flamed for my blasphemy, please listen to both versions and
    see for yourself.

My 5 favorite bands OTHER than Dream Theater would have to be:

    Extreme
    Pantera
    Alice In Chains
    Queensryche
    Metallica

This was somewhat difficult, because I assumed the polltaker meant
rock/metal bands in the vein of DT, and didn't want individual musicians,
ie "Gary Hoey." But these five will do anyway. :)

This part has nothing to do with Ytsejams or Dream Theater, but I feel I
have earned the right to one off-topic post. The 5 best cds I've purchased
in the last six months, not in order of best or worst, are: (I don't think
    I need to mention ACOS.)

    1. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill. I wish all female musicians
could be this direct, raw, and frighteningly honest. I would peg Alanis as
a cross between Melissa Etheridge, for her vocal style and overall sound,
and Tori Amos, for the emotional themes displayed in her writing.

    2. Big Sugar - 500 Pounds. I've heard this style of music referred to as
"Delta Blues." It's straight-cut, simple, and groovy, and is the sort of
music the house band would be playing in a blues club. Cool, fun, solid,
if those three adjectives carry any similar meaning.

    3. Ottorino Respighi - Ancient Airs & Dances. Every fan of classical music
should listen to this at least once. Very moving, but wispy, somewhat like
Beethoven trapped inside a butterfly's body. Should you decide to give
this a listen, be ABSOLUTELY SURE Antal Dorati is the composer.

    4. Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstacy. From what I hear she's very
popular in Canada. The music is very soulful, and I would equate it with
flowing honey. Her voice, were it a physical substance, would be velvet
glass, and its tone is the main reason I listen to her music.

    5. Steve Vai - Alien Love Secrets. Much like Bruce Lee, this man has no
definite style, and thus he possesses all style. Playing, he is like
water. Resting, he is like a mirror. He writes like an echo.

Yes, I think Guy is a worthy replacement now that Fei Long is out. And
let's not forget about Adon, who absolutely rocks...

    >Both bands [Metallica and Megadeath] seem to have gone to writing shorter, less complex tunes.

    >or "Holy Wars..."
    >With DT, it's like PMU, which I still can't believe is over 8 minutes
    >long.

I guess I can't agree about PMU here. To me it is one of DT's lesser
songs. Enjoyable - I heard it on the radio and that's what prompted
me to buy I&A, but to me it lacks some of the depth of songs like
"Under a Glass Moon" or LtL. I couldn't listen to PMU over and over
again like I can the others.
Also, I agree that the Metallica Black album doesn't contain the
long, complex pieces of their previous albums, and that could have
been a drawback. The reason I don't think its a drawback is because
of the power the songs have. The lyrics seem more mature. There is
probably a record number of songs on the album that DON'T have the
words, "kill", "die", or "death" in them (try and find many others, I
dare you). It seems less hateful, without giving up their rejection
of so much of the crap that goes on in our society. Also, many of
the songs do an incredible job of bringing visual images to my mind.
In particular, "Enter Sandman" at the beginning - I always picture a
horde of Mongolian riders cresting a hill overlooking a small,
    helpless European town.
And to whomever wrote about enjoying groups like Pearl Jam on a
different level than their enjoyment of DT - you hit the nail right
on the head. It's as though we live at "Hometown
DT/Progressive/Intelligent music", but sometimes is nice to visit
Disney World ro whatever. I forage into all kinds of musical areas,
mainly because I refuse to accept that any musical style is devoid of
value altogether, but I always return home to my favorites - DT,
Kansas, Rush, Yes, Steve Morse, etc.

Yup, I screwed up. I'd like to publically apologize for not getting my facts
in order before posting. Open mouth, insert foot. :)

I suppose it's possible that was on his mind. The recording sessions for CtE
ran from January to late April 1992. Maybe he wrote the heavy stuff at the
beginning, then saw Metallica starting the arena tour with G'n R and said
"Damn, maybe there's something to this...". I don't know. The only person
who knows if he sold out is Mustaine, and it's possible he's not even sure.

Oh, and while I'm here: My favorite non-DT bands (in no particular order)

    1. Vicious Rumors
    2. Metallica
    3. Barren Cross
    4. Blue Oyster Cult
    5. Savatage

Honorable mentions to Stryper and Deliverance (who I didn't include because
I didn't want the whole list to be christian bands. :))

No, I wasn't aware of this at all. Details would be interesting if
    you have them.
But, in any case, my musical tastes don't depend on what the
artists think or do. After all, I've enjoyed much of Guns & Roses
stuff, yet I have little respect for their lyrics, or the ideas they
espouse. Frankly, Blind Melon has made some of the more interesting
music that I've heard in the last few years.

I was in the Metallica fan club for a while and just before I quit it, to
join the DT fan club(Money being the deciding factor there), Lars told of
the new material they wrote. He said that there were no songs like
"Nothing else Matters" to be released on the new album and that the tunes
rocked. Whether means that they are going to be like the old Metallica, I
don't know? But I hope they do because I miss the old Metallica sound.

Please don't rip me apart if you think these bands suck, I've got wierd

I think someone wrote me a reply about a question if John's mom is or was a

radio. I'm not even sure of the name, but to me the song just screams DT.
I'm not a musician, but to my ear it sure sounds like I here riffs from
"Lie" in Ozzy's new song. I was just curious if anyone else noticed this
or if I need to go get my ears checked. In any case it's a pretty rippin'
