    Hi Jammers,

    Just a few responses:

    To Jason Hartman:
I think the band that Mike likes (Mike who?!?) is Rage Against the Damn
Machine Head. Hehe. Sorry, I just thought of that and had to say it.

    To Wolf Blitzer:
Wow! Did that story make the front page of all the national papers?
Definitely an important story!! (I was actually cracking up the entire time -
    good story!)

    To everyone:
Someone was looking to find out about all the instrumentals. Also, people say
that Moon Bubbles is the lengthy instrumental jam after TLF. The way I
understand it is: Moon Bubbles was an instrumental played during the first
part of the I&W tour (played before Another Day) and consisted strictly of
guitar and bass (the title fits this track well). Barfbag is the lengthy jam
following TLF that was played on boots such Lords of Sound (a show I was at)
and Dream in Progress and it is on the Live in Tokyo video.

My question is: there is a DIFFERENT instrumental that follows TLF on the
Lost in the Sky boot - what is the name of it? Any going to any future
Portnoy clinics, PLEASE ask him - Im sure hes familiar with the boot. The
date for this boot is 11/15/93 (last leg of I&W tour) if that helps. Thanx.

    To Mike Bahr:
See above about Moon Bubbles/Barfbag. Also, keep OaMoT WITH March of the
Tyrant! The Lost in the Sky boot does NOT have that song with SB quality
*sigh* so make sure you use your SB version (from the Nightwatch show)!!!
    MotT is AWESOME!!

Okay, nuff blabbing on my part. C-ya!!

    Hi all,

Heres a cool idea thats been brewing in my head for a while that Id love to
see DT do at some point:

Put out a concept album. Wow thats a NEW exciting idea you say. Im not
    finished!
There would be *TWO* versions of this album, kind of like the regular and
directors cuts of movies. One would be the standard issue; the other would
be a special limited edition type thing.

What makes them different from one another? There would be different
chapters (songs) that cause the story to go into different directions or
place emphasis on different ideas. *Some* of the chapters that *do* appear
on both versions would be different (different lyrics, solos and
instrumentation such as electric and acoustic versions). And to top it all
off, singles that are released could feature B-sides that are more unreleased
chapters to the story that could provide more info to the story and/or raise
    more questions.

Whew! I got that outta my system! Hope it made sense. I just needed to get
that idea out in the open. Anyone whos gonna see Mike P at one of his
clinics, please pass this post onto him!

I think this would be really awesome - anyone agree? Anyone with
comments/flames/replies Id love to hear them either privately or on the 'Jam.

Thats enuff of my ramblings for now. Bye!

            A short message, I swear.

My votes for the band poll:

    1. Rush
    2. Galactic Cowboys
    3. Tori Amos
    4. Queensryche
    5. Type O-Negative

My musical "vice": I enjoyed the wanker-rock of the 1980s. Lot of awesome
guitar playing in it. Yes, even by pussies like Winger and Extreme. I
still enjoy a lot of music now, but I dislike a much greater proportion
of it than I did back then. Back in the late '80s, I liked almost ALL
rock, since everyone was doing guitar-hero cock-rock albums. Now, I can't
stand mistakes like Green Day and Rancid.

My vote for underrated non-DT album of the year so far:

Lisa Loeb & 9 Stories. Check this thing out... it's like Tori
Amos with a guitar. I hope she isn't overplayed.

Ivory Tower + Library of Leng + Fasting + Necropotence = LOTS of life.

    Greetings,

This is in response to whoever it was who made the comments about
DT selling out and came out of the closet about their liking for Pearl Jam
    and STP.
I like Pearl Jam as well. I also like a lot of music that some fo
the more pretentious subscribers would lable crap. Actually, I listen to
some stuff that I would, myself, label crap. However, I still enjoy
listeing to it from time to time. I think a lot of Pearl Jam's lyrics are
quite insightful and some are quite well-written, IMO. I often do not
agree with what it is Eddie is saying, but I still see where he's coming
    from none the less.
DT, echolyn, KX, etc. are still my favorite bands by far (This is
not a disclaimer, simply a point of reference). However, I love the
Weezer album. It is mind-bogglingly simple, but it is one of the
"catchiest" albums I have ever heard. It demands that you sing along to
    every foolish word.
My point is: I listen to music that sounds good. I don't split
hairs over whether or not it is complex enough or whatever. The reason I
listen to a great deal of Prog. (and I do claim progressive as my favorite
"style" of music) is because most "popular" music genuinely bores me after
some point. I listened to Green Day for a while and I enjoyed it, but I
can't anymore. I like music that is challenging to the artist and to the
listener. I like to go beneath the surface to find a deeper meaning, in
    words and music.
If I sound as if I have contradicted myself, I don't think I have.
I listen on different levels. I don't listen to Weezer and try to figure
out what they are saying. I honestly don't think they're saying much of
anything. I still enjoy listening to the album when I'm getting ready in
the morning; the simplicity and catchiness of it lifts my mood without
demanding a great deal of attention. I also listen to DT and complex bands
(probably 80 % of the time) because it is my nature to probe deeper into
the issues of life, etc. etc.

I make no apologies for the length of this message. I think this
is a worthy topic and will gladly read anyone else's long ramblings on the
    issue.

    Hi,
I feel kind of silly using my first post on the 'Jam to discuss
Cassandra, but hey, I'm an English major with a soft spot for Greek and
Roman writings and Virgil in particular. :)
So, anyway, I remember Cassandra from the first part of _The
Oresteia_: Agamemnon, by Aeschylus. She is the prophetess who is cursed
by Apollo to always speak the truth, but no one will ever believe her.
What this has to do with DT- I missed the orginial post... *wry smile*

    >whole thing wreaked off sellout. Maybe I'm wrong...

Countdown to Extinction may have been a sellout, but it was not because of
anything Metallica did. Both CtE and the black album came out in 1992,
Metallica's in mid-August, not sure about the other.

Another possible explanation I've heard for Megadeth's change was Mustaine's
getting off of drugs. Since he was the principal writer of most of the
material, when he lost the smack, he lost his "muse".

Both bands seem to have gone to writing shorter, less complex tunes.
*That's* what disappoints me the most. The greatest thing is when a band
can write long(ish) songs that are so tight, they feel shorter, like "One"
    or "Holy Wars..."

With DT, it's like PMU, which I still can't believe is over 8 minutes long.
Hopefully, DT will continue to push the envelope.

    Michael,

I'm CC'ing the Jam cause I feel this is important........... Or maybe self-
    important, you decide :)

    Michael C. wrote,

    > "sometimes I feel this list is comprised of 15 year olds that are
    fasinated
    > with the F___ word".

    Dan says:

I agree in principle but, I would like to offer the following:

It seems to me that the Jam is populated by two factions : 1) The younger
metal heads who discover DT via M. Pornoy's heavy duty kit work, or J.
    Petrucci's blinding fingers ( God bless em' both !! ) .... and ..... 2)
People who's "progressive tastes" run the spectrum of the likes of DT, King
Crimson, Allan Holdsworth, Chick Corea, Bela Fleck, Echolyn, David Benoit
    , Saga etc.etc.etc.

What i'm trying to say is that most ( but certainly not all ) of the younger
listeners haven't yet explored what may be "out of the mainstream". I have
a 15 year old and while he doesn't run around using the F word ( at least
not within earshot of me ! ), he definitly follows the predictible MTV buzz
bands ! I have turned him on to alot of other types of music to broaden his
appreciation for other varieties. He has also done the same for me
( good examples are Helmet and Megadeth ) While we may dislike the
profane content of some posts, we must allow room for personal expression. (
It's something I think everyone grows out of sooner or later anyway ) Take
it as an opportunity to enlighten the uninformed and voice opinions on DT
and other musical formats that don't revlove around profanity and violence.
You may even discover something in return.
( BTW, check out Eddie Jobson, Zinc - The Green Album circa 1982 :) )

    >Furthermore I stated that I expected more out of DT than
    > to record profanity on CDs and that they were a class act and could call

    > the more than 600,000 words in the English language to express feelings
    and

    > writing/lyrics.

Considering what has been written to date, it is apparent they don't need
to stoop to the level of "shock" lyrics to get their point across.

For all the Jammers who are still reading and haven't skipped on to find the
    next reference to Mercy F_

I've been on the jam for about two months now and I've heard Echolyn
mentioned quite a few times.I was at a used book store Sat night and the had
a used copy of their newest cd for sale. I thought about buying it but I've
never heard any of their stuff before. Can anyone enlighten me about what
kind of sound they have. I would most appreciate it.

Also, in reply to the guy that wanted to know about what DT songs to play for
a metallica, slayer, etc. fan. My recommendations would be just about any of
the heavier songs from Awake. I am still new to DT music (I bought I&W in
1993, but didn't listening to them seriously till about three months ago),
Even though I&W is my favorite, Awake is a much more raw sounging record,
which I think would appeal more to the speed/thrash fans. That's just one
    man's opinion.

Did anyone catch the Live chat with Van Halen on the aol Fri. night? That had
to be the biggest pile of crap I have ever seen. What a waste of time.

(im)patiently waiting for my Acoustic Dreams cd.

I think I was the one that got the whole Metallica sold out/didn't sell out
debate going. For the record, I don't think they did. Whenever any band
sells a lot of albums, they get accused of selling out. It's
inevitable. If a long-time fan doesn't like the album, he/she vents
his/her anger by saying that the band sold out. Metallica still cares
about their fans, and when you stop caring about your fans, that's a sure
sign that a band has sold out.

To the guy that said Megadeth sold out:

I don't think they did. CtE was a slight change in direction towards the
kind of stuff on Youthanasia. CtE shows a maturity in Mr. Mustaine that
wasn't as prevalent on RiP. (RiP still ROCKED!) Youthanasia is a yet
    another incarnation of Megadeth.

All of the above is only MHO, of course.

Stuff that you Ytsejammers might be interested in:

I was at Blockbuster Music today and I was messing with that computer
that tells you about new releases, searches for CD's by artist or title.

I looked up Fates Warning and _Perfect Symmetry_ has been discontinued!!!
It really breaks my heart to see the work of a great band become out of
print. However, it was the only one of their CD's that was designated as
    discontinued.

To any Savatage fans: I picked up _Handful of Rain_. Very good indeed.
Skolnick is an absolute MONSTER! Sorry, but I can only excuse the "Wrath
of Zeus" snare drum on only one CD (and you all know which CD that is). New
Savatage album will be out on the 24th.

My favorite bands besides Dream Theater (in no particular order):

Van Halen Lynyrd Skynyrd Led Zeppelin Rush

    Fates Warning Metallica Queen

Honorable Mention: Megadeth, Chicago, Slayer, Yngwie, Dregs/Steve Morse
Band, ELP, Ozzy (w/Randy Rhoads only), Savatage, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd,
Tori Amos, Larry Carlton, Boston, Echolyn, Weather Report, Yes, Bach,
    Beethoven, Chopin!, Mozart, Paganini.

Stuff that I get made fun of for liking: All of the above and, ABBA, the
Hellecasters, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Yanni, Vangelis, Kitaro, Kate Bush,
    Various Broadway musicals.

    Oh well, some semi-DT content:

In regard to the transcription debate. NO ONE can perfectly transcribe
anything, not even one's own work. The best transcribers get very very
very close. To tell you the truth, it's even difficult to accurately
transcribe somehting you yourself have played! The pitches of the notes
can be accurately done, but articulations and nuances cannot.
Traditional notation is only an approximation anyway, and tabulature is
even less precise. (BTW, tabulature was invented in the 16th century and
pre-dates traditional notation for fretted instruments).

I have the I&W and Awake tab books. Yeah, they're full of mistakes just
like any other transcriptions, but the scrutiny is especially tough on
DT tab because of the complexity of the music. But for anyone who's
attempting to transcribe ACOS or anything else, do so by all means. I've
tried it, and had some success, and most other rock songs actually become
simpler to transcribe! No joke. After a dose of DT, I breezed through
    some other, simpler stuff.

    1) I don't consider Metallica's black album their best album ("Ride the Lightning" holds that honor for me, followed closely by "Master of Puppets"), but I don't consider it a sellout either.

    2) I like Pearl Jam too. I'm not a huge STP fan, but they're not bad.

    Hey Jammers,

I need to, first of all, ask for the attention of Dale Brandt.

DALE, I have your tape and I have been trying to get in touch with you. I have misplaced your address and I need you to send it to me if you want to get your copy of Subconscious. Sorry for the wait, but I just didn't realize that you didn't send me your address on a separate piece of paper. Please email me at the address below.

Now, that's out of the way. This is something that I have been think- ing about ever since you people have been posting about the Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci Clinics: How do you find out where they are going to be next? Was there a list of the places that they are going? Is it something that only musicians are allowed to know about? Could somebody tell me if John Petrucci is coming anywhere near the North Florida/South Georgia area? Thanks.

These sound like a really cool thing to see. Why is it that they can't tell someone on the list so they can send it out to everyone? I know everyone on the list would love to see them in this sort of presentation. I have a musician friend that just told me about a Mike Portnoy clinic in Tampa. Is this one of the places that he is visiting?

Thanks for any info available, doug

I think it's high time all us ytsedrummers combined our efforts, decided on a single protocol, and started posting our interpretations of the grooves that are making these riffs what they are. Nothing confuses the fertilizer out of a guitarist like drum literature (and guitar tab, from what I've seen in Syracuse :b ).

Dave saw that Metallica (Megadeth's major >rival in the same genre) had slightly changed their style from speed >metal to a more straight-up metal. His follow-up to Metallica's >Black album was Countdown To Extinction, and this was coming off >Megadeth's speed Rust In Peace (their best IMO). Their were still >some great songs off of CtE like "Ashes..." and such, but overall the >whole thing wreaked off sellout. Maybe I'm wrong... >

Mustaine said in at least one interview I've read that he "only plays guitar for the money" and then he talked about how he wants to be with his family etc etc. This started during Countdown when his wife got pregnant. He obviously put less attention into some of the songs, however I don't really see countdown as the big sell out, it'd have to be Youthanasia. Although there are some ok tunes on the album (and a cleverly mispelled title), the whole album is much of the same. The band would chug out song after song with verse-chorus-verse-choruse-solo-verse with no variation. There was no shredding, progression, or even a chance to let Marty Friedman shine. After making the album the band always raved about how fun it was to make it. I think I can see why it'd be a lot less work to make a thoughtless album that would sell lots of copies, then to work for a more interesting album (DT content) that you could feel better about in the long run. But if the band thinks they can please their fans by continuing with that style, we'll see what Mustaine chooses to do come next album...

    Hi everyone,

On Saturday, Oct. 14th, Jen Sharward <JennieBear@aol.com>, who's first name I love, of course <G>, asked:

"I suppose I should direct this to Jen Albert... I've often wondered about the significance of some of the lyrics in 'Lie,' and since you know Kev, I thought maybe you could enlighten me. :) The lyric that really sticks in my head is 'I wanna talk about lifelong mistakes, and you can tell your stepfather I said so.' It seems really clear that Kevin is relating some personal experience, but what?"

Besides the information that is currently listed about the song in the YJ FAQ, some of which I supplied, I can't really say that I know much more about it than anyone else. I do know that "Lie" was inspired by the same experience that inspired "Space-Dye Vest." Both songs are different ways of looking at this one particular relationship that went bad and how it affected him (obviously, very deeply). Just speaking personally, I've always interpreted the lyric you specifically mentioned in its most literal sense; it says exactly what it means. There is also some religious symbolism in the lyrics as well (which some of you "old timers" might remember lead to quite an intense discussion on the list awhile back), but I don't see any blatant parallel between that particular line and the symbolism that's used elsewhere in the song. Do any of our illustrious lyric interpreters here on the list have any ideas? :)

I will try to remember to ask him to elaborate on this. He doesn't like to talk about his "past" these days because he's really trying to make an effort to move on (like the rest of the band), but maybe I can catch him in a really revealing mood sometime. :^)

BTW, I haven't seen this posted this to the list yet by Trey, but Mike Bahr has given his ok for me to open up a digital _Subconscious_ dub site. If you are in need of a DAT copy of this glorious CD instead of just a regular analog cassette, drop me an e-mail & we'll work out the proper arrangements. :)

    Take care folks,
