    Attention fellow 'Jammers

I'm sure that many of the people on the list are or have been on Shag's
Screaming in Digital Queensryche e-zine. In his latest issue (October),
he makes mention of a campaign that I think will interest my fellow DT
fanatic's. The following is a quote from SiD:

"Since the cancellation of Headbanger's Ball last season, MTV has
broadcast very few metal videos. A group of metal fans - led, of course,
by Queensryche fans " (and at least one DT fan) "have initiated a
campaign to get MTV's attention and request more metal. The project,
called Operation: Revolution, aims to have as many people as possible
send MTV messages on Halloween, asking that Headbanger's Ball be put back
on the air, and that more metal videos be played during prime time. MTV's
e-mail address is mtvmail@aol.com. The campaign will 'go public' with
announcements on dozens of music newsgroups on October 19th. If you want
to help spread the disease, e-mail 'Mick' at hvaishn@emory.edu."

On another front of the operation, my cohorts within the group have
requested that we also call in on Halloween to request a radically
different video for the MTV "Most Wanted" show. Please remember to write
in AND call in, not one or the other. Voting for which song to request
currently leans toward "Anybody Listening?". The idea is to request a
song that is not too new (Disconnected) and not too old and overplayed
(Empire). Queensryche songs are being targeted for the significance of
    where this movement started.

Being a long time subscriber to the 'Jam, I've seen numerous posts
criticizing, and rightly so, MTV for them not giving air play to DT, QR
and the other groups that we all love so much. I hope I'm not alone in
believing that it's time for this nonsense to stop. By having all 1000+
of you get behind this movement, we will show the idiots at MTV that
there are other forms of music besides rap, dance and the latest,
greatest fad music that people like and will support. Also in doing so,
we can help our favorite band get more exposure and attracting new fans.
With all due respect to the recent thread concerning sell-outs and
keeping DT our "own little secret", this movement can do nothing but help
DT in the long run. By showing our support for this music, maybe MTV and
the record companies will realize that prog is more popular than they
ever thought and they will start to promote these bands accordingly.
Enough preaching, I think (hope is more like it) you all get my meaning.

For more information, e-mail me directly at
    jacobssa.hqamc@mhs.safb.af.mil or Mick at hvaishn@emory.edu.

no shit!! Man, I read your list and was freaking out -- I'm like, this
    is what RANDY used?!

Stupid question, but the above isn't THE Rhoads equipment, is it?? I
would suspect Mrs. Rhoads would still have those items...

Good deal man, Randy remains my primary guitar influence -- it's always
great to see another Rhoads enthusiast out on the net!!

    Howdy folks!

I vaguely remember reading JP's response to Blind whatever's statement about
technically amazing and otherwise killer guitar playing. It was great! JP
was so professional about it- he just said y'know that's a shame that BL/M/w
has a hard time appreciating other music, I mean, just because I play rock
guitar doesn't mean that I don't listen to other stuff and appreciate other
    music.

This response, to me, was superb in that he did not jump down their throats.
He just simply, professionally, and casually blew them off, not even getting
pulled into their unappreciative attitudes. It kind of reminded me of Neil
Peart's intellingent reply to accusations of Satanism (ooh!).

To make a long post short: As subscribers to the Ytsejam we represent DT.
Whether you like it or not, whenever you wear DT shirts or whatever, you sort
of represent DT. If, while wearing a DT shirt you killed your neighbor and
some old lady saw you, she could easily jump to conclusions about DT's music
and their fans. If random people bitch about DT, let 'em. They have not the
patience or the skill to appreciate good music. We don't need to get upset
    about someone else's problem.

    Hi all,

Up until I heard the official James LaBrie pronunciation of ytsejam,
I sounded it out as "yites - jam," two sylables. Of course, with
the start (or re-start, depending on how long you've been on the
jam) of this thread, my sick mind came up with these pronunciations:

yahtzee-jam (throw the dice, or Roll the Bones, for Rush fans)

yipes-jam (picture daffy duck in a Robin Hood outfit, swinging
from a rope in a tree - "Yipes, and away!")

yatchs-jam (jam session on a big sailboat)

    Itsy-Bitsy-
    spider-jam (goes with the "it's a jam")

Yeats-jam (this version has lyrics, but no music)

    yutz-jam (sp) (Yiddish)

yeast-jam (Bread or beer, take your pick)

eats-a-jam (what some mail servers do whan you have too many
                    ytsejams!)

Well, that ought to be good enough for now.

    They're in no particular order.

            Queensryche
            Fates Warning
Roger Water's Pink Floyd (none of this new stuff)
            70's KISS ;)
            The Cure

Ok, so what they're not all metal. ;)

Also, Maiden should be on my list, except for the fact that ever since 'Seventh

    So, there you go.

Okay, waitaminnit. When I asked people to not mail me "are we
there yet mommy" messages about their CDs, I didn't mean to convey the
message that ALL mail I get that isn't a CD order is wasteful, or that I
dont like reading mail, or that I don't like the Jam. None of these are true.

I love hearing from ALL of you. I don't care if it's to talk
about music, DT, Rush, Magic, movies, concerts, or whatever. It dosen't
matter how much mail is in my inbox... you have no idea how cool it is to
get a piece of mail that _isn't_ business after all the (very necessary)
    mail that _is_.

Naturally, CD orders get my first attention, because I try to be
as semi-professional as I can about this whole CD thing. After all, if I
ignored orders and waffled on deliveries and never came through for you,
what would I be? Jeremy Haynes. (heheh sorry, cheap shot, had to take it).

The ONLY mail that does absolutely NOTHING for me is "why haven't
I got my CD yet??" Now if you were number 45 and I say I'm up to 300,
then maybe it's a legit time to worry. But otherwise, what am I supposed
to say or do? "Well, I sent it, and it's in the mail. When will it get to
you? Hell, I don't know, maybe if I sent it like a credit card bill, it
would be delivered immediately, instead of taking too long like all
    packets seem to."

So please, by all means, speaketh and be heard. I'm a connossieur
of fine beers, lagers, liquers, and ale. I just can't stand _whine_. :)

Cardz Corner: I noticed someone asked if all the AD and Subcon
money was going to Magic cards... believe me, it'd be nice (I'd own every
card ever MADE by now!) but I need to use the money from each project to
fund the next one. One day I'll quit and I'll be ahead, but it's really
just breaking even because back when I made Subcon I paid for it myself.
The only reason I have all these obscure cards is because I was lucky
enough to get into it from the beginning, when a friend turned me on to
"this wild new card game" back in the winter of 1993. :) I play all the
time, so I'd be glad to challenge a few Jammers next time we have a GT.

You walk into a room to find only a dead man, shot through the
head, a table, and fifty-three bicycles on the floor. What happened?

Dream Theater-related bands... I have recently picked up a few
CDs of interest... most of you already own these, I know, but for the few
that do not, go ahead and pick them up. I was resisting it this whole
time because I didn't want to invest in Yet Another Band, but I think
we've got a pair of winners:
            Fates Warning - Chasing Time
            Echolyn - As The World

I just got tickets to see DT at the Malibu on Dec. 28. I'm so psyched, this
is going to be my first time seeing them. If there's anyone who lives
anywhere near Commack on the Island and knows how to get to Malibu it would
be really cool if you could e-mail directions. What a freakin' awesome
birthday present: DT tickets! Sorry, I'm a little too excited. Since every
body is writing in their 5 favorite guitarists I might as well say mine.
      1. John Petrucci (he never ceases to amaze me)
      2. Randy Rhoads (I just got the digitally remastered edition of Tribute:
friggin' awesome. Who knows what he might have done if he was still here)
      3. George Lynch (You may not like Dokken, but he does some cool shit e.g.
Mr. Scary from their live album)
      4. Ty Tabor (I'm suprised no one has mentioned him with as many King's X
fans there seems to be on the list. He's got his own unique sound and
    style)
      5. Eric Johnson (Cliffs of Dover, nuff said)
I'm not saying these guys are the top five, I know about the Vais and the
Malmsteens and quite a few others, these are just my personal favorites. If
anyone's got those directions I'd really appreciate it. My address is

I guess my favorite groups after Dream Theater would have to be:

    1. Pink Floyd (comes a close second. . .with Roger Waters)
    2. Berlin Philharmonic (comes a close third, with Karajan or Abbado)
    3. Genesis (namely--"we can't dance")
    4. Rush
    5. Blues Traveler

    6. I do like the music (as well as the comedy) to "No Cure for Cancer"
    with Dr. Denis Leary.

There's one part of the ACOS that I don't like. I don't have it with

Man, I really _am_ stoked about this. I hope someone is printing Jams for
him since he specifically requested it, said that he totally enjoys
reading them and dosen't have a net account to get to them himself.

I tell you, this is really classy. He told me what all of DT was
currently up to, which is no real news. They're heading over to Japan
this weekend to vacation and then play 3 shows (all sold out!) on 10/26,
28, and 30. Mike will continue doing drum shows throughout November in
the West (yippee!) including 2 DEFINITE dates in L.A. and a possible one
in Phoenix. I plan to attend the ones in LA. Any Californian Jammers
wanna meet up and do some boot trading? Then there will be THREE
Christmas shows... the 28th, 29th, and 30th, in Old Bridge, Deer Park,
and Conneticut. Then they set to work on their new album.

Everyone congratulate John Petrucci... he's now a father. (I
    think that already got announced.)

Anyway he asked about what the net thought of ACOS. I told him
that aside from everyone missing the "Please Don't Go" part, that the
reaction was pretty much positive across the board.

Apparently I'm also sending him some copies of Cygnus, since he
was interested. He said that the other members of the band would dig it
too, just as long as it wasn't a bootleg of _them_. How cool! :)

We chatted about this and that, but that's the gist of it, he
wanted to thank all of you for your support. We agree that rock is in a
downtrend right now and that when they bounce back up, DT will probably
be really grateful to have a core of fans like us.

            Everyone take care!

I was just wondering what version of O Holy NIght is on the Acoustic
Dreams CD? I know of 3 different ones. One is a studio version with
Charlie - another is the live acoustic version with just James and John
    - and the 3rd is a studio version with James. I have one of the
Nightwatch Radio show tapes with Mike P and they play about 1 minute
of the the James studio version and he sounds incredible!!!
Does anyone know where I can get a full copy of this song??

How about a few more topics?

Other fave non-DT bands (not in any special order - subject to change
    without notice)

Extreme - Buttryche (I think they went downhill with Promised Land) -
echolyn (this guys are great!!!!! I just hope they don't split up
just cause Sony is giving them the shaft!) - Fates Warning - Eric Johnson
    - Dixie Dregs (I only have Full Circle so far but it really rips!!
DT fans should get this album out!) - Garth Brooks (seriously!)
    - Tori - Alice in Chains - Rush - etc etc etc...

Oh, and also my band, whatever we are called. The band consists of
me, Steve Z, and Matt Lyons (lyonslayer@aol.com - still a lurker!! - speak
    up Matt!!!).
Hey, we even did a version of Wanted Dead or Alive with the pitch shifted
vocals like the DT version, we MUST be cool! :) Know of any
bass players in the Baltimore area who would want to be in a DT-ish
    band?? We need one!!!

As if this post insn't long enough already (this is probably the 27th
    jam you've read today right?)...

**My Gear List (at least what I can think of at this moment)

Pearl Export 5 piece drum set
A collection of cymbals, all ZIldjian except for a 20" Paiste china ( Steve's
and Matt favorite instrument, yeah right...) :)
    Pearl double bass pedals
    Tascam 644 4-track Midi Studio
    Alesis Midiverb 4 (Shhweet sound!)
    Yamaha PSR-510 keyboard
Yamaha DD-5 cheap-ass drum pads (I use these when I don't wanna lug my
            mountian of shit to practice!)
    Midi sequencer
A couple of Radio Shack mics and an Audio Technica stereo condenser (for
            use in overhead drum miking)
    Steve's mics when he's not looking :)
A few billion miles of assorted cable

Anyone in the Baltimore area that wants to do any kinda recording or
make a demo or something, lemme know. I can make some pretty nice
    sounding demos on the 644.

Also, I'm still looking for one of the new DT hats. Can someone pick
up one for me at one of the upcoming shows?? PLEASE PLEASE!!!

Okay, so everyone is really getting into this "favorvite bands, other than DT" thread. I've sort of avoided it because five choices is just too constrictive. :/ (Oh, and, yes, this thread has been brought up before - old-timers know this - but I can think of a great number of threads/questions that get resurrected on occasion...) Anyhow, people who come by to visit are typically impressed by the combined music collection of Keith and I because A) it's a lot of stuff, and B) it's a wide variety of stuff. <g>

At this point in time, my two very favorite bands are DT and Queensryche. Below is a list of other things I listen to, loosely categorized, genrewise:

classical: Mozart, Ravel, Wagner jazzy/"standards": Harry Connick, Jr. 50s: Buddy Holly, The Del-Vikings, Chuck Berry (AKA father of rock n' roll guitar to many...) proggy: Savatage, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Fates Warning world: Gipsy Kings, Yothu Yindi, Enigma New Age: Enya, Ray Lynch, Tangerine Dream "alternative" (whatever the heck that means anymore!): New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Art of Noise straight metal: Lillian Axe, Fifth Angel, Pretty Maids

Just a small cross-section from a *very* large collection. :)

Hey, kids! I'll be in northern NJ over Christmas break and definitely want to catch one of the DT shows, either at the Malibu in Long Island or Birch Hill in Old Bridge. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll be able to attend both. Can any 'jammers familiar with both clubs suggest which would be better? Do they differ in acoustic characteristics or any other way? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Now I hear that Bland Felon has bashed Nuno Bettencourt and Joe Satriani as well? These guys are unbelievable. Keep the BM flames coming! Thanks for the entertaining reading. Some call me...Tim BTW, can anyone think of any good spots for a mini Ytse-meeting before the shows? Feel free to post!

    1. Rush 2. Genesis 3. Alice in Chains 4. Metallica 5. Pearl Jam (especially Yellow Ledbetter!)

Well, there's my contribution to this poll thing.

Jammers, On Saturday evening I called the Malibu directly (I live in Pittsburgh) and asked them if there were any more tiikets for the DT show. Of course, he said "yes" and that ticket master is selling them. First thing Monday morning i called Ticketmaster and ordered them. There are five of us going and on the way meeting two other friends who live in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

So, yes, TM is selling tix. I'm pretty sure their # in NY is 888-9000. I hope that's right, it's been since monday morning.

Could the person selling Ytsejam t-shirts e-mail me about what's left? For those who bought the shirt, wear it to the show so fellow jammers will recognize you. (maybe we can greet each other with some secret handshake-- he he). Later, Matt P.

This is strictly non-DT content so I'll try to keep it short. Someone listed Meshuggah in their top 5 list, and then someone else asked for more info. Since Meshuggah will probably interest many ytsejammers, and not only that one person, I'll post this on the list and not to that specific person.. Meshuggah is a Swedish death metal band.. Their playing is intense and complicated.. The vocals are screaming or growling, with a somewhat electric feeling to them.. I guess they used a harmonizer or something. It's darn heavy, so if Rush and Echolyn are your fave bands after DT, I wouldn't actually recommend Meshuggah.. Their drummer is completely nuts, if you thought Dream Theater was hard to mosh to or tap your feet to, try Meshuggah.. It's out of this world. Weird and wonderful time sigs and rhythms, they'll blow you away.. But, as I said, unfortunately the immense degree of intensity and heaviness along with the death growl vocals will keep most of you guys away from this band.. Their latest album is called "Destroy Erase Improve".. If complex death metal interests you, this is a total must-buy.
