To tell you the truth, "Another Day" was the first DT song I had listened
to, and it struck me as one with deep lyrics and LOT of feeling. JP's
guitar solo really blew me away. I'd suggest reading some of the lyrics
for this song, because Dream Theater is excellent in all aspects of their
work (music, lyrics, etc.). Gets you thinking, doncha think? :)

I saw Queensr=FFche on the PL tour, and Type O Negative opened for them. =
     The
music was half-decent at best, in my opinon. They were all dressed in
black, their instruments were totallky spraypainted black down to the
drumsticks, and it seemed really gay.

The thing that pissed me off was the message put forth by the lead "singer":
"This is a song I wrote with Kurt Cobain, who committed the ultimate act of
heroism by killing himself." I instantly thought, why don't you be a hero
    too, and kill yourself?

After their set, they said "Thanks, you can go home now." That really got
me fuming, considering if it wasn't for Queensryche they'd be playing crappy
dives for spare change like they were in the winter/spring '94. Tha really
alienated me from a band I was open to possibly like, if you know what I=
     mean.

Hey there! Anyone here going to the Malibu on the 28th? (duh, don't
answer that question!). Anyone want to meet before the show to hang or
something? That'd be really cool! We'll all wear our ytsejam shirts and
have a Dream Theater posse (cool!). Well, lemme know! TTYL!

In response to the Savatage questions:
-Criss Oliva died around the same time that Curt Kobain killed himself, I
    believe Criss dies in Florida
-Jon Oliva is in "semi-retirement", as they put it. Savatage got a new
lead singer for the Edge of Thorns album, the one released before a
Handful of Rain. I believe that Jon Olive does keyboards, and I believe that
the new lead singers name is Zachary Stevens. but I am not sure about this.

For anyone who may have missed the last two posts, if you are interested
in joining 7 other guitarists in transcribing ACOS, please let me know
as soon as possible. Assignments of the song have already been made,
but if you would like to participate, let me know.

Since the TAB book from Warner Bros. does not seem like it will happen,
this is one way of getting a fairly good transcription.

I will post updates periodically about the progress (and I mean
periodically, not every week). Thanks to all who have shown interest.

Neil Gallop wrote some really good stuff in his post about the relevance of
punk in the rock genre, and i heartily agree with many of his other points.
i think we should all be more tolerant of other genres, since we would all
like to be taken more seriously as DT fans than all those "other people".
i like the idea of listing our most influential albums form the last
20 years (tho' i'd made that 30 years). here's my .02 cents worth:

    beatles - sargeant pepper's
floyd - dark side of the moon
    zeppelin - IV
    hendrix - are you experienced?
    who - tommy

this was not easy; i could easily have listed as many albums of EACH
musician or band. and these are not necessarily my faves, but who i
objectively see as being the biggest ever. IMO.

    later,

    cam

(Rush) just may be the best album of all time!!!!

    Dee,

I liked your post. You and I discovered DT in 1989 the same way (by
looking in the credits of 'Perfect Symmetry').
Although I understand where you are coming from (I was also annoyed by
several idiots at the QR show who only responded to 'Silent Lucidity' and
'Empire'), I have seen other people who begin to like a band after
hearing the "popular" stuff and turn into true fans eventually.
The more the merrier (album sales help the band).

Anyway, I played the entire ACOS album (except for the Elton stuff) last
week on my radio show 'Abstract Images'. This is not a whimpy college
show with an audience of 5 geeks.... The show is broadcasted over the
preview guide (free radio on the T.V.). Everyone who has cable in
Jacksonville, FL and surrounding areas gets my music show every Thur. night.
Trey has heard my show (hey Trey, call me and request DT - It's your duty :)

Although I'd love to, i'm not allowed to play really heavy stuff (Slayer,
Fear Factory, etc.) but I do get away with a lot of my favorite stuff
such as QR, DT, FW, and INFERNO (shameless self promotion - but it seems
to work - i've sold many tapes this way).

    caught my attention.
To the person that asked about Chris Oliva, he was killed in a car crash
near Tampa while returning from the Livestock festival. I cant' remember
what the cause of the crash was but it might have been bad weather, don't
    quote me on that.

nice thread...thank you whoever that was.

    in no order

dream theater- images and words. i think somehow this will be looked on as an
amazing album in 20 years or so.

floyd- dark side. a tad obvious

prince- purple rain. an amazing album

hendrix- axis. 10000 times better than "experienced?"

tori amos- under the pink. see the dt comment.

renaissance- scheherazade/other stories. most unknown band. 1st rock band to
play carnegie hall. strengthens the bond between rock and classaical that is
    essentially prog rock.

frank zappa- you can't do that on stage vol. 2- along with its humor, the
    best guitar playing by zappa.

queen- night at the opera. never again will anything be produced like that.

    elp- brain salad surgery. brilliant

public enemy- fear of a black planet. i think one of the best rap albums of
    all time.

    rush- hemispheres.

new bands/albums that are way worth the listen:
asa nisi masa, gracie moon, screaming headless torsos, thought industry (not
NEW new, but worth it), new prince album, new satch, alanis (if you can get
past "you oughta know"), kevin moore demo.

It's actually made up of "Shelter Me" and "Outside Looking In."
The bridge from outside looking in is a lot better in this song,
I think, because Ray does a cool harmony thing that's missing in Inside
Out...Circles also lacks some of the things that make Shelter Me one
of my least favorite Fates songs (those damned harps, for one thing.)

last, to the guy who noticed "spoonman" in SINGLES, actually Chris Cornell
did a lot of the music for that movie. if you have ever seen the t-shirts
for the fictional band CITIZEN DICK, it lists a bunch of song titles on the

Bafu, your humor is always much appreciated by me.

As far as the ytsejam pronunciation is concerned, according to the way Mike
Portnoy pronounced it, it is "yeet-say-jam." Or, for anyone who is familiar
with the International Phonetic Alphabet that would be:

            [`jit seI | dzaem]

Of course, this is just ASCII approximation of the actual IPA symbols.

Attn Bass and Key players in the Boston area: audition for B. Wherry! I
want to hear more stuff from this guy!
Brian: I'm still pissed off you moved to Boston instead of the Baltimore
area. Who says school's more important than a band? :)

I thought of some bass players that I neglected when I posted my list. One
is Pat Badger of Extreme. Boy, can he groove. Also underrated is Monty Colvin
of the Galactic Cowboys. Plus he's got all that cool orange hair and that
    killer 8-string bass tone!

Well, I gotta go because I FOUNDITSA CAUDUP WITMAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!

Considering how few men I know who like Fates Warning et al, it doesn't
surprise me that I know few women who do.
    >
    > hey... there aren't any women musicians in this genre either! what's going

One time I was thinking about that. How come there are so few women in
talented bands? There are plenty in pop and alternative, but very few in
progressive rock or metal. Is it because women just aren't talented?
Then it occurred to me that at practically every classical concert I've
been to, 90% of the string section (and a good bit of the rest of the
orchestra) is female. Now, it's not like I've been to millions of
classical concerts, but this has always seemed to be the case. Anyone
    else notice anything similar?

Not that this really explains anything...

    hello everyone,

Someone was inquiring about the use of Christian themes in Dream Theaters
songs, well I think this is a good thing. At least they aren't talking
about negative things that don't set a good example for people. Even if
DT aren't Christians I think it's cool that they talk about Christian
themes. Does anyone know if DT are Christians?

    Message-ID: <9510201724.AA16297@pdx108.intel.com>

Ok, I've read a couple posts in the last couple days (ie, the last 20
jams ;) from people who said they couldn't really get into WDADU
because of CD's voice. I have to respond to this because this coincides
with a remarkable experience I had a couple days ago. Having a little
extra time on my hands while my fiance was at a night class, I stuck
in WDADU, cranked my stereo, and read the liner notes the whole way
through. There are some damn good songs on this disc!!

Before I go on, let me say I've followed the pattern that a lot of you
have in getting into Dream Theater: Bought I&W, then bought Awake,
then discovered the ytsejam, then found out about WDADU and picked
it up. I, too, was turned off by CD's voice, as well as the production
quality. But please, don't let this stop you from really listening
to this album! I regret that I've owned this disc for almost a year
now and almost never listened to it until recently.

The thing that struck me the most is how prevalent Kevin's keys are on
this album. I may be wrong, but I get the distinct impression that
Kevin was really enjoying himself during these early years. A couple
of the songs, especially _Only a Matter of Time_, almost strike me as
entire keyboard solos with guitar, drums, bass, and vocals thrown in.
Listening to WDADU makes me even more sad he's gone.

The lyrics are outstanding, too, from the cynical anger portrayed in
_Light Fuse and Get Away_ to the uplifting message of _Only a Matter
of Time_ (my two fav songs on the disc, btw). _The Ones Who Help to
Set the Sun_ is great, too. And who can forget the Ytsejam? I think
it's unfortunate that Dream Theater doesn't feel the necessity to play
these old songs live anymore. And with the departure of Kevin and a
new keyboardist that still needs to master the newer stuff, I doubt
we'll ever hear them again. There really are some classics on this
    oldie but goodie.

So do yourself a favor and go stick this disc in your CD player right
now (What? there are some people out there who don't yet have _When
Dream and Day Unite_? Well go get it!). I'm glad I did.

Well, to celebrate getting up to date with the ytsejams, I thought
I would post my own favourites. It has been interesting to read
other peoples choices and to find new guitarist's names to follow
up on (and a new Savatage album - with Al Pitrelli - is he not one
             of JP's influences ?).

My all time favourite band is : Queen

My all time favourite singer is: Freddie Mercury
             (no-one mentioned him yet)

             Current favourites:

             Bands: DreamTheater
                            The Tea Party
                            Savatage
                            Walter Trout Band

Guitarist: Joe Satriani (I love EVERY note he plays)
                            Marc Bonilla
                            John Petrucci
                            Stevie Ray Vaughan
                            Walter Trout
Jimi Hendrix (I only had 4 bands so I can have 6
             guitarists)
I also like Neil Schon, Steve Vai, Joe Perry, Michael Schenker

             Singer: Freddie Mercury
                            George Michael
James Labrie - improves with every song.

Bass Player: John Myun - the musician I most admire in the
                                       'repect' sense
                            Stu Hamm

             Drummer Mike Portnoy
                            Roger Taylor

I obviously don't think too much about these instruments !

BTW. Virgin Radio is sponsoring Joe's UK tour, and advertising
him as 'The biggest secret in Rock - the guitarist the stars go to
             see'.

Someone send a Dream Theater album to Richard Branson !

(OK - before you all ask - Richard Branson owns Virgin Radio,
Virgin Airlines, Virgin Records, Virgin Record Shops - there's a
new 3 story one in San Fransisco)

i saw someone mention duarte last jam. i just have to say the guy is
phenomenal. he even has a **seven** string bass player. i had never in
my life seen a 7-string bass. also, frosty from soulhat is now playing
drums with him. frosty looks about 60 or 65 years old, but he is one of
the best drummers i have ever seen.

if you go to see duarte, keep in mind that the band allows taping, and will
even let you plug directly into the board. so if you dont have a walkman
or whatever, just rip your tape deck out of your rack, and take it with you :)

i have taped a few shows on DAT off the soundboard if anyone wants copies..

btw, duarte is alot like stevie ray vaughan, he is even based out of austin.
he is nowhere near as good as srv yet, but he has tons of pontential...

The fifty-three bicycles story is sort of a standard one from the list.

Hey Jammers, Seeing that the "Top 5 band poll" is nearing its extiction, how about starting a new one based on people's favorite epic songs? God knows that these are usually the songs which cause the airbags to accidentally inflate due to excessive drumming on the steering wheel and dashboard...:-) <<<and causes me to totally disregard my radar detector which of course pin-points that sneaky little Nassau County trooper behind the hedges just waiting to suck four points off my license!!>>> ---I owe that beauty to "Phantom of the Opera" by Iron Maiden.

Anyhow, I know that there are probably hundreds of them..especially when the likes of Rush, ELP, and Yes are combined. But why the hell not? I am VERY proud in saying that epic songs are pretty much a staple of progressive music. I'd just love to see a 20-minute song with numerous time changes by Snoop Doggy Dog or Hole.....they probably couldn't even create an interesting TV jingle.

Oh well, is it another stupid poll....ma che catz? Its 2:15 a.m. and I'm bored and waiting IMPATIENTLY to see DT at Malibu in two months......I need to see a live show soon....(Where in the hell is King Diamond??)

Enough insomniatic ramblings....here are my fav epics, "Ivory Gate of Dreams" -Fates Warning (hint: check out my .SIG) "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" -Iron Maiden "A Change of Seasons" -DT "Halloween" -Helloween "The Chalice Vermillion" -Thought Industry "The Oath" -Mercyful Fate "2112" -Rush "The Glory of Achilles" -Manowar "Among the Gods" -Conception "Storms and Mutiny" -Magellan

    Cheers, Carlo

P.S. Since I have received mail from a fellow "jammer" saying that my .SIG is too long and that its not proper "netiquette" to have one as big as mine..this is the last post that I will include it on (which pisses me off since cause I LOVE Fates Warning and wanted to create a fitting tribute, plus it took me an hour to create!)...however, the last thing I need now is enemies and I don't want to be considered a space hog. Maybe my next one will be on Maiden or the 'Tage..
