I saw on CNN today that the lead singer of BLIND MELON died. He was
found dead on the tour bus on 10-21-95(I believe).

Even though all the "Blind Melon" slaming...etc..etc...lets have
    respect for life.

I just found this out...some of you probably already know.

    Enough of sobering thoughts....

    Dear jammers,

Wouldn't it be cool if a bunch of us Ytsejammers wore our shirts and
lined up in the front row of a Dream Theater concert? (hint hint Malibu
    show!) How about it?

    Hey All,

I don't know if this is old news yet or what but the lead singer of
our friends in Blind Melon was found dead Saturaday afternoon. They said
he had serious drug and alcohol problems so my guess is that's the cause.
Or was it the mere fact that he DARED condem the spawn of the Gods in
Dream Theater and the Gods punished the blasphemous act??? Well, just
wanted to let you know in case you hadn't heard...

NO DREAM THEATER CONTENT (JUST MAJESTY (QUEEN))

    >5. Queen (although the rumors about Freddie coming back from the
    >dead to help with the new album scare me a little)

It is Freddie's spirit that lives on in all those who love him.
I certainly know that he's around.

It has been very difficult for the remaining members of Queen to
work on the new album, having worked with Freddie for so many
             years.

It must be really hard just to have to work with someones pre-
recorded voice, hearing that voice in the studio, having to work
when the key person in the band is not there any more, yet trying
your best to do justice and indeed homage to that person in his
             final work.

For those interested, the album is due out November 6th, called
'Made in Heaven', the CD cover is a sunrise picture of Freddie's
house in Switzerland with his statue superimposed in the garden.
This statue has been finished for some time, but no location has
             been found for it yet.
The track listing is as follows, Queen and Freddie fans will
             recognise some of the titles:

              Made in Heaven track listing.

             1. It's A Beautiful Day (1991)
             2. Made In Heaven (Queen version)
             3. Let Me Live (1991)
             4. Mother Love (1991 - Freddie's last vocals)
             5. My Life Has Been Saved
             6. I Was Born To Love You (Queen version)
             7. Heaven For Everyone "
             8. Too Much Love Will Kill You "
             9. You Can't Fool Me (1991)
             10. A Winter's Tale (1991 - last song Freddie wrote)
             11. It's A Beautiful Day (revisited) (1991)

    Message-ID: <199510222243.AAA26810@freenet.hut.fi>

Well, the Head Melon died. Maybe we laid a terrible ytsejam curse upon him?
If that was the case, who should we start picking on next? Who do we want
dead in week or two? I don't know. Anyways, since lately so many people
have expressed their anger towards Blind Melon, I was wondering if anyone
by any chance wrote "DIE BLIND MELON" or something like that.. If anyone
remembers doing that, well... What can I say? Spooky.

Ok, on to happier topics now.. Bafu Vai suggested starting a new
thread of songs that describe us.. as individuals, not as in a group,
of course. I might give that one a try.
    No, I won't make a top-5 list, I'll just name a few :)

    Clawfinger: Warfair
..this one I think describes how I feel about war, violence, and
the obligatory military service we have here in Finland.. Also this
represents the hate I feel at times.

    Enchant: Enchanted
This is musically somewhat like myself.. I won't start describing
it. The lyrics could fit into my life situation, but basically they're
just about having a huge crush on someone, and nothing too deep at that.

    Dream Theater: Surrounded
    Hmm.. I'm basically a happy person :)

    Dream Theater: Take the Time
Complicated, progressive, intelligent... Me. ;-) Well, maybe not entirely,
but still, I see some of my character in this song.. and of course the
lyrics are great as well, especially the 'motto', find all you need in
your mind if you take the time. I totally agree with that.

Well, I'll get off my soapbox now and get some shut eye.

    Looking forward to more 'jams,
    Antti

i am fucking pissed off but very upset-- so all you melon-haters out there, once again, attempt to maintain the integrity and good name of the mailing list and refrain from the type of messages i'm anticipating. no doubt the 'jam that this message appears in will contain many of these anyway. i fully expect you scum to start celebrating and saying good riddance... but how about let's not stain the ytsejam with your immaturity.

Hi again! 2 quick questions: 1) Is anyone planning to, shall we say, preserve the Malibu show for posterity (or even prosperity)? I'd do it, but I don't own that type of equipment. However, I already know that it's gonna be a killer show, something I'll want to listen to when I come back to school. Also, who's planning on meeting at Roy's before the show? Post to the list, so we can see what's going on.

    2) What does James say at the very end of PMU? I must have heard it hundreds of times, but I can't figure out what he's saying!

Since I've been in lurker mode for awhile, I feel amiss for never answering this trivia question which is the final thread in a continual link (sort of) from Yes to DT trivia

    >>>>>>>Since no one has yet answered this question, I will leave it as a >>>>>>>continuing/new triva question:

Which other well-known rockband (not necess. prog) also plays(played) a piece based on the Broadway musical 'Westside Story?' (hint the original composer's name was included in the song credits; new hint, the front man for this band was also a guest on the 'Muppet Show'; another hint, Vincent Price did some narration for an album video by this band.)

Even if this was eventually answered by someone else on the JAM, the answer is, of course, Alice Cooper (Derek is therefore the connection point). The song by AC is "Guttercats Vs the Jets" (or similar) from the "School's Out" album. The original song from Bernstein's "West Side Story" is simply called "The Jet Song". AC, the man, not the band, appeared on The Muppet Show, and did the (in)famous cover from the above AC album. Vincet Price did the narration for "The Black Widow" from AC's "Welcome to My Nightmare" album.

Man, I couldn't agree with you more. I can really identify with what you are saying here. Although my band isn't a prog-rock band per se, we do throw some elements of it into our music (mostly influenced by me, of course). We also find that we can play our hearts out and not get much of a response only to walk around town and hear how "great" bands like The Flaming Lips and Weezer are. I don't mean to knock down people's musical tastes but how can you say a band like The Flaming Lips is great? I've read an article on these guys and they write most of their "songs" IN the studio. How much can a band have to say when they go into the studio with nothing and record whatever weird sound they can come up with? This really disgusts me to the point that it makes me sick. Thank God there are bands like DT, QR,Rush, FW, etc. that really know what it's all about.

Hey, I'm no fan of Blind Melon and I have no idea whether or not the rumors are true, but if they are some of you should be ashamed of yourself. You need only read YTSEJAM 1065 to see some people announcing the fact like it's reason to party. Jeez! That's really sick.

Blind Melon's music and views may suck, but putting a =) at the end of your message after announcing the guys death is the most offesive thing I've ever seen on this list. I hope you realize what kind of image you could be giving to everyone as toward what DT fans are like. I am nothing like those who say that, and I am personally ashamed of those of you who had joy when they heard about his death.

If I am not mistaken, tongue my shitter (gross) started a new thread which has NOTHING to do with Dream Theater. Last I checked in the welcome letter, it says DT and related topics. Bands the have songs with the same name has NOTHING to do with DT. Let's cut the shit and keep your mouth shut if you have no idea what you are talking about or have nothing interesting to say. Interesting topics dont include bands with songs of the same name.

Well, well, well. It does appear as though the lead singer of Blind Melon is no longer with us. I'd say it was bad karma, but it was the _guitarists_ that bashed Dream Theater and Queensryche. I certainly hope it wasn't some overzealous member of this forum that caused the death of Mr. Hoon. That would mean the death of Dream Theater in a way we would never want to see happen. I wasn't a Melon fan, but I hope we don't see any tasteless posts following this event...

More to the point, he better not be pedestalled like Kurt Cobain. That just made me sick. Drugs are one thing (eats away at the mind and the rational thought disappears) but suicide is cowardly.

I suspect that will be the last we ever hear of Blind Melon. No matter; their 15 minutes of fame ended when the Bee Girl walked off stage. Their Woodstock performance was pathetic. Too bad they had to end it this way instead of realizing they were finished and quitting, like most of the more honorable '80s glam bands did.

Where in the world is Malibu and when is DT playing there? How do I find out other show dates?

You know, I can still vividly remember watching MTV as a doe-eyed teenager with my sainted grandmother. It was before I was a musician, but well after I wanted to be one. I still idolized musicians, rather than respect them. I also thought that my grandmother knew nothing about rock music, because she'd always ask, "Which one's Van?" when a VH video would come on. So, naturally, I would protest vehemently when she would refer to whoever happened to be on as "those drugged-out freaks." No way! Not _my_ heroes!

Of course, she already knew about Joplin, Bonham, Moon, Bon Scott, Hendrix, etc., etc. ad nauseum. I was either too young to know or too young to care about Zep, AC/DC, whatever. But then, as I got older, Kurt Cobain killed himself. Obviously his drug problems had something to do with it. Then Jerry Garcia. Now Shannon Hoon. (Yes, I'm making a prediction about the autopsy results, but it's something of an educated guess, based on already-existing press reports about being asleep/dead on the bus, rehab, etc.)

Did Nana know more than she let on? Am I the only rock musician left who has never experimented with anything other than cigarettes and alcohol? Or doesn't plan to? Please tell me that if I ever get the chance to make a living playing bass that I won't be surrounded by drugs!

I am still doing those interpretations of the awake album and am a little confucious about some things that are literary references and also some of the symbolism. Please mail me if you will be willing to help to understand. Later, Howard

I saw KK earlier this year in Cinci., and they were REALLY damn good. The sound, lights, and songs were so full of energy and life, that it took my breath away. The set when I saw the consisted almost all of THrak (which I love), along with a lot of their earlier stuff, with a few suprises thrown in (Lark's Tongue). The sound quality alone for over seven instruments is worth the money (mixing two drum sets, two guitars, two chapman sticks, one bass, a mellotron, and vocals is not easy), but you will be freaked out!! I sat next to two guys from Auston Texas who drove all the way to Cinci. to see the show, and they were amzazed!! I didn't even know they were coming to Columbus, I'm going to see if I can get tix, later, -gene

I just was changing stations on TV, and happened to turn to Much Music, and Combat Des Clips happened on. Well, seeing as I couldn't STAND to miss the excitement of watching Coolio take on that new Green Day video, I stopped at that station for a while ...

Then, the next thing I hear is that Shannon (the singer I think?) from Blind Melon was found dead on his tour bus! They aren't saying anything else yet other than "watch 'Fax' tomorrow to find out more", so does anyone know what happened to him? I hope none of you 'jammers had anything to do with it anyway. ;)

I can't say I'm surprised since that guy was a bit screwed up, and I never had much respect for the guy, but with all the talk about Blind Melon lately, and people joking about vandalizing their tour-bus, etc. and then this crap about Kevin Moore having cancer, well this thing just jumped up and hit me.

Jammers, It almost seems like people are trying to get other jammers to leave the list with posts like the following. Why are we so quick to hate, to anger, to misread jokes, etc?

Here someone takes personally something completely harmless.

    >In ytsejam 1061, some alleged person pretends to know more about rock >music than most people because he "took a class." Well, butt wipe, you may >read about rock music, but some of us were there as it was happening! > >I take real offense to little ass wipes like you that think you know >it all because you read about it in a book. I realize it's not your fault >that you weren't born until 1974, but unless you were there as it was >happening you have no fucking clue as to what was going on. etc, etc. Hatred continues spewing........

Here, a joke seemed bad to one person, a certain person who likes to post jokes of his own.

    >p.s. "I'd like to hang out with John Petrucci, because he's not a >heterosexual in my world." Even if I did feel this way, I wouldn't >post it to a mailing list of 1200 people, because in my opinion that's a >pretty fucking tasteless thing to say.

Do some people think they own the list? Would they like to see some of us leave? Cause if so, you're doing a good job.

This is related to the "Founditsa caudupwit maaaaay" or however you spell it, thread. During the live versions of "TTT" on the part where James sings "... it's time to pick up the pieces go back to square one", he sings "square one" different everytime. I've heard "squaaa waaa" "sque waaaan" and one version I can't even spell. I have to laugh every time i hear a new pronuciation. TTT is definitely my favorite song. Every time it comes on in the car, my friend and I air guitar so hard the car literally rocks. (get your filthy minds out of the gutter). Anyway, has there been a meeting place decided before (or after) the Malibu show? I'm driving there from Pittsburgh with friends and we'll definitely come if we can find the meeting place. Matt P.
