Anyway, about the Malibu. I want you all to realize that I'm doing all
this planning and direction-giving by memory. I haven't been on Long
    Island in 2 months.

Okay, first: Let's make the pre-show thing definite. Let's plan on
meeting at Roy Rogers in Long Beach at 5:30. This will give us all time
to introduce ourselves, eat, get to the club, check our coats, get some
drinks, and make our presence KNOWN directly in front of the stage! I
understand that the show is on a weekday (Tues?) and as such, some of the
locals won't make it to Roy's b/c of work. Well, that's ok, just wear
your YJ shirt and meet us in front of the stage.

Once again, directions to Roy's: Leave the Malibu parking lot and make a
left (going west). Go straight for a mile to a mile and a half. You
will encounter a huge intersection at Long Beach Blvd. There are signs
there pointing you to a town called Rockville Centre (my hometown :) ).
Roy's is on the far right corner, next to a movie theater. (Locals:
please confirm! My memory is getting a little rusty!) BTW, I don't know
    where to park for Roy's.

Then, after the show: Well, I'm still working on this one. The bar idea
is out, because a lot of us are not of legal age yet. It's a funny
thing, once you turn 23. You forget that some of your friends can't get
into the bars yet! I don't know if Roy's will still be open. I also
don't know if the people at Roy's will want to see us again. Or, for
that matter, whether we want to eat that crap twice in one day! Those of
you that are in the area, scout around, and see what's open at that hour,
that we can all get into. The only place I can think of is another food
joint in Oceanside (about a 10 min. drive from Malibu). Locals, I'm
referring to Mr. Philly, on LB Rd. Great food, relatively cheap, open late.

Alternative: If there aren't too many of us, I will look into reserving
my firehouse in Rockville Centre (about 20-30 min. from Malibu). We can
drink there, but you all MUST promise: Minors won't drink, and nobody
will drive drunk. Also, sleeping at the firehouse is STRICTLY prohibited.

Alternative #2: Somebody, and I forget who, mentioned a pre-party at his
place in Kings Park. I don't mean to impose, but would you be up for
hosting a post-party? This would be cool for me, b/c I could crash at my
drummer's place in Kings Park (who will also be at the show). Obviously,
if not, then we won't. No pressure meant here - if you can't do it,
don't do it. Just an idea. (Besides, Kings Park is about an hour's
    drive northeast of the club.)

Post publicly for the benefit of all, but please e-mail me personally
    about 1)Roy's: good idea/bad idea/can't make it; 2)post-party: Philly's
is cool/I have a better idea/can't make it.

I didn't mean to take charge of everyone's plans for that night, but I
want to meet you guys (and girls). I hope that this will be fun for
all. As you e-mail me, I'll post a tally as to who's coming and
    dissenting opinions.

    Remember - 8 days until Operation:Revolution!

between the death of the bm vocalist and the incident with Steve Morse, i'm
have powerful urges to send dt a big fat message saying that if they ever
use drugs i'm going to kick their ass. not that i'm that pompous, it's just
that i think it would pain me much to hear that the music that moves me so
was created through or even by someone using some substance i don't
appreciate/understand/condone. not to mention that drugs would most likely
lead to the end or upset of dt. maybe i'm just a prude.

anyone else feel this way also?

long live this painful revolution. -matt

    Hey guys.

There's been so much YJ traffic lately, I must have missed the post about
Operation:Revolution. If it has to do with kicking mainstream music in the
ass, then I'm all for it! Could someone send me a copy of that post, (Or the

OK, fair enuff...you've explained what you were doing and admitted it may
not have been the way to do it. but everyone must vent sometime and i
    guess this was your time.

    > Are you a musician? Can you relate to the way I, and probably 90 percent
    >of this list feel? Have you played in a bar, pouring out your heart and soul

    >your self-esteem, and it has broken mine, and I'm really sick of it.

i am a musician, but not pro or even semi-pro. never played in a bar, but
in basements and garages. i play not to be appreciated (looking for approval)
but rather for the love of music. i hope you do it for the same reason,
even if you do play for money. sorry, but i don't think i need to be in
your exact situation to understand. i am a visual artist (you're a musical
artist) and i see this same sort of mindset in the masses. that's the
way the world turns. but it's people like us who want to follow our hearts
and do what makes us happy, and hopefully, in turn, enlighten other people.
as artists, if we want to succeed on any level, we must have the perseverence
of a thousand (a thousand _what_? i don't know). yeah, there are always
setbacks, discouragers, periods of self-doubt, and so on. but the feelings
that accompany these things are _your_ responses; they are internal. you
cannot blame external things for your feelings (easier said than done, i
know, but i am practising and succeeding with this different approach).

and that's why i don't see how bashing _any_ other bands is the way to go.
no matter _how_ bad they really are :) in fact, it's this dwelling on the
negatives that will _not_solve your problems. if you really love what you're
doing then stick with it. but if you don't like the self-imposed or very real
competitiveness of the biz or can't earn a living doing it, then maybe
it's time to look to something else...

    just my thoughts.

This is mainly in response to The Digital Man, who posted a long message about the dignity of life and our adolescent tongue-in-cheek attitudes to this whole thing..

I agree that the loss of a human life is always very tragic, especially if the person was young, like Shannon Doon (sp?) was. However, people die all the time, and here on the jam and everywhere else we just have to keep on smiling and cracking jokes. We can't let stuff like that get to us, there is just too much pain and agony everywhere.

I personally didn't find it disgusting that many of us Ytsejammers first thought of the funny coincidence of Blind Melon being brought up again on the list and this untimely death of their lead singer.. It is very ironic, and I found the jokes about this (especially Trey Allen's funny newspaper article :)) if not amusing, at least understandable.

So, in conclusion, the death of this person was very tragic, but tragic deaths are so common that we shouldn't be immensely shocked just because the victim was a musician and whatever. To say that we put this list and Dream Theater itself into shame is grossly overreacting, if you ask me.

That's it, I won't post more about Blind Melon, and hopefully this list will get back to DT business in the near future.

    Take care all, Antti

Yes, we all know that Shannon Hoon was dead? Was he the guy who ridiculed DT? I don't think so. His bandmates did, he didn't. Saying that your glad he's dead just shows that you are heartless, and incosiderate. If a member of DT said something that conflicted with your views on a certain type of music would you be going off on him for weeks? No. Would you be happy if one of the other members that had nothing to do with the comment dies? No again. Just because Shannon Hoon happened to be in the same band as those guitarists who slammed DT, doesn't mean that he shared their opinions, like it matters anyway, he was a human being. So to all of you who have nothing better to do than whine all day because guys in Blind Melon slammed DT, GROW THE FUCK UP! People have a right to opinion, deal with it, not everyone appreciates the music as you.

    William G. Starner

PS Sorry my first post is a negative one, but this BM thing is getting way out of hand and it had to be said. Personally I love the music of DT AND Blind Melon, you shouldn't let what musicians do on their own time affect your opinion on the music itself, music is first.

i'm relatively new to the Jam, and never would have thot it would be like this. the juvenile factor is _way_ too high here for me. some of you may be young, others may not be so young and may just be mentally stunted. in either case, it's no excuse. i thot DT would warrant an intellectually stimulating discussion forum, with some fun stuff thrown in. talk a bit about their music, the band, shows and cds, meeting place, whatever. i could never have anticipated the level that discussion has sunk to: blind melon this and blind melon that, punk sux, kevin's got cancer, female guitarists suck, DT's a hair band, grunge blows, the list goes on. the best i can look forward to is the latest update on Mike Bahr's CD mailout, and i can't even afford to check out one of those cool-sounding CDs.

i'll give this forum another (really short) chance, and if people aren't going to grow up (even a little bit), then you'll be losing a subscriber. and i know i won't be the only one. there've been numerous posts by Jammers that have indicated disgust with the tone of the posts on the jam. get with it, people. have some tolerance and respect.

Saw them in St. Louis at a club earlier this year and he was fantastic. On a unrelated note, do not forget to support the Operation: Revolution movement. Will be posting more on this later.

    i should clarify something--

in a previous 'jam i said in regards to shannon hoon's death that i was "fucking pissed" and "very upset."

i'm upset because now they won't put out any more albums, that's all.

i'm fucking pissed because hoon just had to go fuck around with drugs and not only ruin his own life, but those of his family, friends, and bandmates, not to mention ending blind melon's career way too early. i'm not crushed... i'm not in shock... no cobainesque mourning... i'm not really feeling too much of any kind of emotional response other than disgust, pretty much.

after i defended blind melon (with a little help, thanks all) in front of hordes of vitriolic ytsejammers (sorry all), hoon had to prove just how boneheaded he was, and ruin everything. it's nobody's fault but his own.

the music is still cool... but he will not be put on a pedestal anywhere near me. not to dance on his grave. just wanted to make that clear.

anyway, all this shit is depressing. let's move on to lighter topics like testicular cancer or something.

In a way, I do. I'd never tell DT that I'd kick their ass, though. They'd probably kick mine if I tried it.

If they did drugs when they write any of their songs, I would lose what respect I have for them as musicians and for their work.

As for the Blind Melon singer, I have to admit that I don't feel too bad about it, but it doesn't make me want to smile either. I never cared for their music or for Nirvana's when Kurt killed himself for that matter. I just hope the media doesn't go overboard like it did with Kurt, but then when doesn't the media do this in the US?

No - Fish is just plain, tasteless and disgusting. Making light of death is not. People's passings either suck, or they don't. Zappa's passing sucked. Cobain's did not. Neither did Poon's. <shrug>

    >The members of Dream Theater are above that sort >of drivel. Shouldn't we be, also?

What, DT's become our Moral Leaders now?! MAN! They're MUSICIANS. They're PEOPLE. They happen to be EXCELLENT musicians, and NICE people.

Ever hear the saying that if two people agree on everything that only one of them is doing the thinking?

I'm not a clone thinker who agrees with everyone that I admire. I refer you to the post I put up a few hundred 'Jams ago about what I said to Mike backstage at the TLA in Philly, as everyone else was kissing his ass. I don't do that, sorry. And I don't subscribe to the group mentality that we should all think alike. (Ask me about my views on religion.)

And I *will not* apologize for espousing my views.

    >Personally, I think that Shannon Hoon was stupid to abuse drugs.

NO SHIT! And that's why I don't have any respect for him or his passing.

    >You need only read YTSEJAM 1065 to see some people announcing the >fact like it's reason to party. Jeez! That's really sick.

Well, since I was one of 'em, let me tell you that I did celebrate when Kurt Nobrain offed himself. I went around telling everyone that he'd given me an early birthday present, since he decided to do it around my birthday.

    >Blind Melon's music and views may suck, but putting a =) at the end of your >message after announcing the guys death is the most offesive thing I've ever >seen on this list.

That would be me, with the =).

Fine. Maybe my personal views on death differ from yours. Death is NOT a bad thing. It's gotten such a bad rap these days. Besides, who wants to stick around this rat-infested shit hole of a planet longer than we absolutely have to anyway?

The only shame in this is that he produced a child, and then went and O.D'ed. Idiot. We're supposed to have respect for someone who treats his kid & the kid's mother like that? Yeah, you do that.

Offensive? What about Ted Nugent making the statement "I'm so glad Kurt Cobain is dead." Did THAT offend you?

I didn't get offended - I was glad too! And, I hope Courtney follows soon after, and the state puts their kid in a good foster home. (Thus ends the list of what me & Ted Nugent agree on.)

    >I hope you realize what kind of image you could be giving to everyone >as toward what DT fans are like.

Um, I hope you didn't overlook the fact that not everyone agrees on everything, just because we're fans of a particular band. We're also INDIVIDUALS. And, what - we're supposed to represent a "moral standard" because of the band that we like? I DON'T THINK SO. (See the "group think mentality" speech above)

    >I am personally ashamed of those of you who had joy when they heard >about his death.

Gee, Daddy, I'm sorry I'm a cold-hearted bastard who doesn't give a rat's ass about some idiot who shot enough drugs into his body to kill himself, and left the responsibility of fatherhood behind.

    My evil side exposed.

Singer Shannon Hoon (or whatever) was found dead in the band's van last Saturday. I guess that's fate telling us to quite the Bland Mellon thread (even though I agree that they are seriously weird individuals when it comes to their musical taste).

Yes, a lurker comes out. This is the first time I've written to the 'jam, but I figured I'd better, since I work in New London.

I got my tickets to the concert Saturday night while I was at the El 'N' Gee to see the Reducers (check out the home page: http://ae.vitro.com:8000/Reducers/HomeTable.html)

I have 2 suggestions for a gathering place. The first is Mr. G's. This is in New London, just a few minutes from the El'N'Gee. It's not the classiest place, but the food is good (pizza, grinders, pasta), prices very reasonable, and it's large enough to hold a big group. I don't think a group reservation would be required, but a call ahead to warn them would be polite. There is a separate bar area, but the dining area is all ages, with alcohol served on both sides. It is on Williams St, just down from Connecticut College and very close to the off-ramps of both I-95 North and South. The number is (860) 447-0400

The other place is G.Willikers. This is very similar to a T.G.I.Friday's, and is likely to be VERY crowded at 5pm during the holiday season! The food selection is larger, but prices are larger also. We would definitely have to book a reservation with an exact number in advance. This place is across the Thames River in Groton, so it's a little farther, but still only about a 10-min drive from the El'N'Gee. The number for this place is (860)445-8043.

BTW - The ticket vouchers I got had Dream Theater spelled correctly, but the concert listing at the club had it as "Theatre". I hope they take that down before the guys see it!! -Meghan

I was just in the Feb. 94 issue of Bass Player magazine to correct my friend who thought Myung played a Warwick bass for I&W (it's a Spector NS-2), and what do you know? Brad Smith is like on the adjacent page (bassist for Blind Melon). Of course, the Myung article was a lot bigger and more interesting. Weird and ironic, eh?

    Hi to everybody,

since I'm missing some numbers of YTSEJAM I don't know if someone has confirmed the death of Blind Loser singer Shannon Hoon. Over here in Germany we can read about it on MTV text for we've the luck to see the european edition of Headbangers Ball. It's definitive. He is dead and so it shall be. Maybe some of his bandmates will follow him ... (so I hope)

Take care ... and dream on ...

Hello all, I just got through Ytsejam 1065 in which several people revealed that Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon was found dead on their tour bus. I noted that at least three of these messages expressed some kind of positive reaction to this. I have eight words for you people: WHAT THE FUCK IS THE MATTER WITH YOU??? This is a HUMAN LIFE we are talking about here! Somebody commented that he "didn't give a rat's ass about someone who acted the way he did" and that he wished some of the other band members would follow. Praytell, what major offensive moral infraction did Shannon Hoon commit? Was he a ruthless dictator of a third-world country? A serial rapist? A child molester? Oh, I'm sorry; that's right--a couple of his bandmates made fun of your favorite band! Oh, the humanity! If I'm correct, his death is also going to leave a child fatherless. But that's okay, right? His band didn't like Dream Theater; they're not worthy of life...you make me fucking sick.
