    hiall ,

I know this is an old topic but does anyone know how to play the
keyboard solo with a guitar? I was listning to it and I thought the
    phrasings were really guitaresque.

on the new Joe Satriani ...if you are a fan of him because of his "shredding
abilities " you might need to borrow it from someone and listen to it
before you buy it. the songs are really bluesy/jazzy almost no "shredding"
the sound is like you're in a garage practicing with your first band and
all you have is your guitar and the amp and a wah padel. but the music is
mindblowing. i couldnot believe that some one could play so different from
what he's for the past years. it's beautiful. though I only listened to it
onece and I want him to play the wway he had been playing but I had the
feeling of him sitting right by me and playing guitars with my shitty
practice amp. I don't know it's a really beautiful experience.

but of course I love everything he has done except for the long instru thing
he did at the end of the first disk (woodstock jam ???) and his first ep.
    but what the hell;)

    enough bablling ...

    take care

    Minhaz

P.S.: Can't believe I gotta miss DT again

First, let me preface this by saying that Hoon did not deserve to die
because of what some members of Blind Melon said about DT. That is
rediculous folderol and anybody who thinks this should get their head out
    of their ass.

Now, this may sound harsh, but I feel very strongly against the use of
drugs and if Hoon overdosed, then he deserved to die. Anybody who takes
drugs to the extent that the are completely dependent on them is just
committing suicide. Thus, I look at Hoon's death sort of like Cobain's.
It doesn't pleasure me to see them die, but it was their choice, so I
can't feel sorry for them at all. If Hoon chose to abuse drugs, and then
died because of it, then it was his own fault.

Sorry if this offends any drug users out there, and I am not a medical
professional, but by now everybody should know that drugs do nothing but
f__k you up and staying away from them is not only highly advisable, but
a matter of life and death.

I'll throw in some DT content just for the hell of it:
Just got my acoustic dreams last night, and although the sound quality
was great, I have to say that there is no track on AD that I would rather
listen to than the original. Another Day is difficult to listen to
without the saxaphone, but LIE is cool, and Wait for Sleep rules.

Good job, Mike, and by the way, was does the
    11
    21
    1121
    111221
or whatever mean in the liner notes? Is this some kind of trinary number
system, and there happens to be no zero in the above numbers? It tried
converting them to decimal from octal and hex number systems, and the
    results were inconclusive at best.

This goes out to Mike Bahr and all those other L.A. based Jammers
who were planning on attending the Mike Portnoy clinic in November: THE
CLINIC HAS BEEN POSTPONED!!! I was in L.A. over the weekend and went to my
favorite store West L.A. music (on Santa Monica Blvd.) to get a new drum
    head (I suggest the Tommy Lee Aquarian heads to all you drummer out there;
they cannot break!) and I asked the guy who helps me out all the time if
he'd heard of Mike P. He said of course, and that his November clinic has
been postponed until the end of December, possibly even until January. He
did say that Mike will be doing some sort of thing at the House Of Blues
in L.A. with Sheila E. and Steve Smith in November. I am very sorry to
    relate this news. To recap:

-The Mike P. Clinic will be sponsered by West L.A. Music
-It will not happen until Decemeber or January
-Mike will be performing at the House of Blues in Novemeber, but
this place is a very exclusive club.

If anybody wants to check my info, feel free to call L.A. information.
When they say, "What city?" you say "West Los Angeles." Then say you want
to know the number for "West L.A. Music." When you call the place, ask
for the drum department. If anybody learns anything definite by doing
this, please e-mail me at: rrivera@moose.uvm.edu.

                                    Richie

P.S. Mike Bahr- when you do make it to L.A., make sure to go on Viper at
Magic Mountain. Ninja's a waste, but Batman is pretty cool (I'm not sure
if it's still there or not).

P.P.S. West L.A. Music is easily the best store in L.A. They don't hassle
you like Guitar Center and their prices literally cannot be beat. I buy
everything from them. The reason I'm relating this info. is that after
all West L.A. clinics (I've been to several including Rod Morgenstein,
Terry Bozzio, and Sheila E.) there is an autograph session at the store,
where the brands that the guest uses (in Mike P.'s case Mapex and Sabian)
are on sale for incredible, one time only prices. I personally can't wait
for the clinic so I can buy a new crash and possibly a fourth tom.

    Hi everyone,

Jim Pitulski was nice enough to call me on the phone this afternoon and
explain his situation with DT. :) Although an official statement is being
prepared and will be released soon, he asked me to post here for him, to
answer some questions and clear up any misinformation that's been
    circulating.

Yes, Jim has parted ways with partner Rob Shore, but Jim is taking the "Round
Table Entertainment" title with him & will continue to manage under that
name. DT is being managed by Shore now, but Jim may still be working with
the band in the future on special, select projects. He will continue to work
with and manage Kevin Moore/Chroma Key and is also working with LA guitarist
Bill Whiteacre and progressive band Spock's Beard (who are playing at
Progfest in November - come out to see them they are *great*!). The split
with DT was very amicable (he just had dinner with a couple of the members of
the band a few nights ago :) and he still supports the band 100% and wishes
    them all the best.

And he wanted me to also thank all of YOU for your support of him & the band
    over the years. :)

I'll post here with any new info as soon as it becomes available, of course.

    Take care everyone,

the jam, but what the hell? where are all those progressive metal women i
see at dt and Kansas shows?

how many women are on the jam?<<

Hmmm...you mean to tell me that Babs, Jen Albert, Jaime, Patricia, Elise, et
al, and myself aren't vocal enough? (Oh, and no offense to you lurkers out
there...) I also know a number of female fans outside of Ytsejam. I'm sure

    Greetings and Salutations,

The following is brought to you by Ben Laussade and his fight to stop the prairie dogs from overrunning the earth.

In accordance to the thread asking who could take the place of a given DT member:

If Mike Portnoy were to fall sick, I would have to say that, IMPWOO (in my possibly way off opinion), Tim "Herb" Alexander of Primus would be fit for the job. He's the only drummer I've heard that does (almost) the same kind of wierd time changes and single-stroke hi-hat rolls and double bass drum work that MP does. Two reasons I didn't say Neil Peart are:

    1. As far as I know he only plays with one bass drum

2.I haven't heard enough of his work to judge whether he'd be able to handle the job

I only made the above assumption based on what I'VE heard Herb Alexander play. I have no idea if he'd be able to learn the parts that fast.

    GUESS WHAT???

For the first time I met someone else who has heard of DT! He worked at the store where I take my drum lessons. He saw my shirt and said, "You listen to Dream Theater?" I said yes, and explained that he was the first person I'd ever met that had heard of them. I showed the intro of The Mirror to my drum teacher. I had her play the duh-duh-duh duh-duh-duh part while I played the beat(s) around it. We spent a long while trying to figure out how to write it out on paper. The guy (not the drum teacher, the guy I met) said that the drumer was "scary". I agreed enthusiastically. He went on to ask if I had seen DT at the Huntridge Theater here in Las Vegas (BTW the Huntridge's roof fell in recently, possibly being weakened by DT's incredible talent). I told him no, because I hadn't heard of them yet, but I was happy to know that they did come to Las Vegas, so that there was a chance of them coming on the next tour.

    WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!WOO!!

Keep in mind, that I have no idea if this guy knew what he was talking about.

HE SAID THAT DT WAS COMING TO LAS VEGAS SOON!!!!!!!!!!!

Whew! Nothin' like a good scream. If anyone can confirm that this is true or untrue, please let me know. I do not yet have my hopes up, because I had never met this guy before in my life, but a glimmering chance is better than nothing.

I REPEAT, I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS TRUE OR NOT, SO DON'T FLOOD ME WITH MAIL ASKING WHEN AND WHERE. THAT WOULD SUCK MAJORLY.

    Ben Laussade

The late Criss Oliva from Savatage was killed in a car accident near his home in Florida. He and his wife were on their way home from a rock festival in Fla. which Savatage just finished playing. They're car was struck by a drunk driver. Criss was killed almost instantly and his wife was critically injured and in a coma, last I heard. I don't know her present condition.

Tragic, needless. He was a talented kid ranking right up there with John Petrucci.

It was mentioned that it may not have been John Petrucci who sent that message to the jam, so I thought I would see what I could find out. I don't know how much everybody knows about him, but does this look accurate, or is it all an elaborate plot!

The one thing that I noticed was the berkelee.edu does not seem to exist as a domain (no mx record that I could find), not that a small thing like that proves that this isn't him.

If it is really him I think that we should all pitch in and get the guy a real modem - 2400, my god, that is not fitting as man of his state :-).

i am having doubts about the validity of the mysterious little post i found 2 days ago. it seemed so enigmatic. almost reminded of the "enigma publius" stuff i read (you know, the mysterious pink floyd person).

maybe we have our own little "publius."

and yet, jimmy (fellow bu student) mentioned he found out ways top know (jimmy, if you see this, please elaborate this to me in private). so confusing. it makes me wonder a bit.

to ken bibb: right on with the drug thing. thank you. re: the she thang....(particularly mike bahr): it would indeed be nice to see a female who can shred hard. i suppose we would have to start cloning jennifer batten, or members of phantom blue.

speaking of shredding females, one does come to mind. ruth underwood, frank zappa's percussionist- she is a nasty shredder, and hearing her hurts my brain...i mean really hurts. any other zappa fans agree?

counting down the days to dec. 27 and 28. i may go to birch hill....debating whether i can tolerate travelling to 3 states to see ONE band 9also debating if my car would last). see ya all again, david, the magical kobayashi

Yes, Delores <Mrs. Rhoads> has Randy's gear locked up in a high-security storage vault. <I know this because I met a friend of Randy's...Karl Sandoval, as mentioned in my list.>

And yes, my rig is 90% Rhoads. I have boots of both his QR stuff and his Ozzy stuff. Plus... 2 hours of bootleg video with Ozzy and QR. Ultra-rare.

The compilation was great, too. A must-have for any Rhoads freak. Randy is god...John Petrucci is a demi-god.

Oh, yeah...I just got a Jackson Original Rhoads model <the black one>. BTW...The Custom Sandoval Flying V on my list...Karl Sandoval made the polka-dot V for Randy. Need I say more? Any Rhoads freaks, E-mail me sometime.

    Later.... Erik

    Hey, Neil.

Obviously you are suffering from burnout from reading so many Jams. I understand. Because nobody in his right mind would try to rip me in the way you are. Let me tell YOU something, pal. I have been playing keyboards for 17 years. I practice my ass off, and I've been told by several musicians and nonmusicians that I am quite good, (not being conceited here, just repeating what I am told). I am not Kevin More. I openly admit that. Am I trying to get better? yes. Do I like to listen to musicians that suck? No. Do you? Obviously not. Therefore, why should we have to put up with musicians that suck when there are countless numbers of trained talented musicians being passed over for their just rewards?

    This world sucks shit.

Silly me. I forgot. I assumed people would have enough common sense to realize that I meant *illegal* drugs and not just any drugs that can be bought at a pharmacy.

    > > 3. A person should be allowed to do whatever that person wants to do > as long as they are not hurting anyone else. Just because their > code of morality is different from yours does not mean that they > should be condemned. I never said they should be condemned or that they shouldn't be allowed to do it. I just said that I wouldn't respect them anymore. This is my belief. Think of it what you will. But regardless of what you think, this is how I feel.

Knowing that they are not doing any *illegal* drugs while creating great music is all that's important to me. If I learned that they started doing drugs, they wouldn't be as impressive to me anymore. I couldn't and wouldn't listen to their new songs if this were true. This is a moral decision. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone else but me.

    > > As an example, Marijuana is legal in many countries and is part > of their cultural heritage. Does that mean that their culture > is reprehensible? Some cultures consider caffeine to be at least > as evil as marijuana--should all caffeine drinkers be condemned? Yes!!!! Damn them caffeine addicts. Let's lock them all up and throw away the key. Lock them in an isolated room with a TV showing nothing but Juan Valdez and other coffee commercials. Let's watch them suffer over a period of a few days.

I'm sorry my beliefs seem narrow-minded to you. Your post about boxing was a little irrelevant. Two people are fighting for money in a ring legally. This is not mind-altering to the effect that I imagine drugs would be.

If they were on drugs, I wouldn't listen to them anymore. End of story. I look up to them because I love listening to their music. The music wouldn't mean as much to me if they were on drugs.

If anyone disagrees with me, fine. But let's try not to insult each other's views, OK? We can have an intelligent discussion without the insults.

Hey all, I just got a copy of the Dream Theater pay per view show from Japan. All I have to say about it is WOW! I mean, I knew these guys were great, but this is really top form. The only other band I've seen that made me go wow is Queensryche. I can't believe how tight they are live. This even kicks Live at the Marquee in the ass.

At this point I'll say that I'm really impressed with Derek Sherinian's keys. This guy smokes. Plus I love the extra jazz influence he seems to bring to the band. Kevin Moore is great, but I really love the jazzier parts of this video where DS plays with a clean piano sound as opposed to the tried and true KM signature organ sound. I'm sorry to say it, but I prefer DS. On second thought I'm not sorry to say it. Great stuff.

That's it for me. I just had to express my disbelief that a band could be THIS GOOD!

    Hello Jammers,

I have gotten mail from a few people who are interested in going up to New Jersey for the Old Bridge show on December 29th. Jason Hartman and I are talking about having a group of us meet and drive up together, possibly in more than one vehicle. Currently a few people from Baltimore, Manassas, Glen Burnie, and the Baltimore/Washington metroplex have expressed a casual interest. This would involve us meeting somewhere off of the Baltimore beltway 695, and then travelling up together. I am getting my ticket for the show tommorrow, so I'm definitely in on this. E-mail myself at mbacko1@umbc.edu or Jason Hartman at lhartm1@umbc.edu if you are interested in joining this. It is still early but Jason and I just want to guage interest.

BTW I am hoping the quality of the jam corrects itself. I was really dissapointed when I got back from vacation last weekend to find 15 digests about Blind Melon. Come on people! I'm sure they have their own digest, if you want to flame them go there. I just wanted to state that all of you on the Jam who post high quality and informative posts are appreciated Mike Bahr, Mr Chew, John Jens, Mike Burstin, Brian Cox, Airdance, Jen (The Bear woman), Jamie (Metropolis Watch), Korou (and the Japan correspondants), Ken Bibb (for providing this forum... though he is probably regretting it at the moment <grin>), and yes even Bafu Vai <grin>, plus all of those deserving that I forgot or don't have room to name. Thanks for making this digest a worthy forum of musical discussion. (we are often thanked too little in this world)

The following review was written by one Don Kaye for Request Magazine's November Addition:

Dream Theater's "A Change of Seasons" (East/West) is the ultimate in excess from a band of resolute prog-rock throwbacks. The title track is a 22-minute opus featuring plenty of dazzling instrumental bravado but not one memorable hook. The remainder of the album consists of a set of the band members' favorite cover tunes recorded live in a London Club. Their choices range between true classic (Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand") and dusty pomposities (Pink Floyd's "In The Flesh?"), with an air of pointlessness hanging over the whole thing. Nostalgia is least effective when it sounds so passionless.

Well all bands can't be Nirvana! -John
