    A few things...

To the guy who said Al Balkiewicz is Public Ripoff #2... I'd ease
off just a bit, if I'm not mistaken Al has spent the last six months or
so in a hospital bed Learning To Live all over again after being in a
major spill of some sort (car wreck)? Granted, he should've sent your
videos before then, but once it happened, there really wasn't much that
could be done. No sense crying over spilt milk. I believe he said he's
trying to re-contact those whom he still owes tapes, so as to finally
    complete the trades.

Women "shredders"... I call 'em as I see 'em, and I don't see
NEARLY enough of 'em. I'd _love_ to have a woman in my band. Not even as
an image/sex appeal/etc thing... women have their own nuances of
musicianship and songwriting that are lost to the minds of men, and vice
versa (I'd suspect). Tori Amos, Lisa Loeb, and their counterparts in the
world of female musicians write some things I never would have thought
up, and many have excellent vocals (or chops, in the case of the above
two, on piano and guitar respectively). So while I'd say that aggressive,
motivated, talented female rockers are a thing to be wanted, I'd also say
you're blind if you don't see that they're in woefully short supply.
Don't like it? Good. Buy your daughter a bass or an axe and become part of
    the solution. :)

And Hole dosen't count. As soon as she manages to hit a true note,
I'll acknowledge C.Love as a musician. Hole goes where only Pearl Jam (with
the out-of-tune Tremor Christ) has gone before... gratingly obscene.

In case anyone missed the BIG ASS UPDATE in the Jam from tonight,
I'll post it again in 2 days to keep everyone current. So the next big
update you see will be a re-run, so you can ignore it if you got the
first one. It's been updated to 10/23/95, even though in my
shortsightedness I forgot to change the effective date on it.

What's everyone going as for Halloween parties'n'beer night? I'll
be sporting a thick afro, gold chains, belbottoms, and wide collar as
Jules from Pulp Fiction. It seemed the thing to do at the time. I imagine
I could just put on an overall and I'd then be Mike Portnoy! :)

Lost in translation: this sign from a Leipzig hotel lobby.
"The elevator is being fixed for the next day. During
that time we regret that you will be unbearable."

Just a quick note... don't want to tune down to B for playing Lie
or Caught in a Web? The songs aren't thrown off TOO much if you translate
up to dropped D tuning on bass or guitar and play the tab as drop B (like
it said for CIAW in Guitar). (DADGBE and DADG) You'll need a GOOD singer
though, since you'll need to translate James upward as well. This works
better with less downtuned songs, like Kickstart My Heart or Paranoid.

Dream Theater should have a grinning skull on the cover of the
next album. I've just always liked that motif, seeing it as a way of
throwing blatant spite at propriety (when necessary). They could get one
of the Magic artists, like Quinton Hoover, Dan Frazier, or Melissa Benson
to draw the cover. Yeah, a grinning skull (accompanied by a thematically
matching picture... say... a scene from Hell) would work out great. I
like the mystical, interesting covers they've already had, but I think
the grinning skull is worth a try.

Actual Mesa Tribune newspaper headline... nice double-meaning...

"ORGAN FESTIVAL ENDS IN SMASHING CLIMAX"

I believe someone out there is really wondering why I e-mailed them and not
    the whole list....mistaken address. Sorry!

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you possibly taped any of JP's guitar
clinics? I missed the one in Charlotte by two days. I am very interested
in seeing this and will either trade a boot for a boot or I will pay cash
for a copy. If you read the message I left earlier (Ronnie Scott Show) two
jams earlier this is the list that I was referring to:

    Dance of Eternity 2cd
    Majestic Harmonies 1cd
    Lie single cd
    Silent Man single cd
Caught In a Web tape (1st leg of 94 tour)
    Comedy cd
    Live @ the Marquee cd
    When Dream and Day Unite
Live in Tokyo Video (not an import)

If you have the JP clinic or the Ronnie Scott "bonus tracks" and you see
something your interested in, or you have them or access to them please
e-mail me. (The Portnoy clinic would be great as well!)
                                    Thanks, Brandon

Hi. I'm Mike, and...and...i'm a DREAM THEATER LISTENER!!!

ok. now with that all of the way, and this being my first post to the
Ytsejam /serv, it's rather natural to tell people of my first listening
    to DT.
During my freshman year in college, a friend of mine had "Images
And Words", and i had heard bits and pices (sp) of it, and i had no real
feeling of it. I had another friend, who is/was the lead singer of the
band "Rex Hunter", who had ORDERED me to go get this album. I didn't.
When "Awake" was released (on the same night as the Mighty Mighty
Bosstones's new album came out), i bought it, just because I had heard
such good reports. Neadless to say, I wasn't let down. Awake (as you
all probably know by now), kicks much ass.
Since then, I've gotten I&W, WD&DU, Live at The Marquee, ACOS,
Lie and Silent Man singles, two boots: "Live Out Loud", and "A Kick Into
A Dream", as well as a copy of "Subconscious", which kicks ass.
I think Moore's playing is excellent (In fact, i'm learning "Wait
For Sleep" curently), and i see him as the "foundation" in the
band...then he left. (shrug). The drummer rocks, as does the guitar.
I'm a huge prog fan, and i see DT as the start of the next "generation"
    of prog. (claps wildly)
Now, all i'd like to do is see these guys in concert. Any news
of a show near the Philadelphia region? Anyone?
Ok. Thanks for your time. Catch ya 'round.

    m.

For those of you who live in the Northeast and still haven't
gotten tickets to one of the upcoming DT shows, you should
really reconsider. Do you understand? These 3 shows are the
ONLY shows until probably the end of next summer. We have
been blessed with these upcoming shows. I'm not trying to
brag about these shows for people who live out West that
can't make it. Anyway, hopefully we'll see a sell-out and
some big-time support for DT. Anyone know what company is
    booting the show?

    my dearest Hairball,

i wouldn't be _bragging_ about sharing the same opinions with Ted
Nugent. sure, i like his earlier guitar maniac rock music, but to
listen to the guy talk is like listening to a Charles Manson cartoon.
the guy's lost a few too many marbles and simply cannot serve
as a role model to anybody in this world. i didn't mourn for
Cobain either, but you tend _not_ to make many friends when you
publicly state that someone's death is a good thing.

    Message-ID: <0099858A.205BD280.24@kenyon.edu>

First off, Bass Player magazine just published the results to their
annual readers poll. John Myung finished 7th. Marcus Miller got the number
one spot. Favorite person who doesn't play bass was Neil Peart (sp?). I think
7 is pretty respectable for a new guy that hasn't gotten a lot of publicity.
Next year all of us bassists must band together and get Myung into the top
    five.
Second, what a great thread!! Elliott Kim's idea is great. I don't
enjoy thinking about anyone in DT being sick, but I found myself intrigued by
the idea of replacing these chop-monsters.

Guitar: Steve Morse or Trevor Rabin.
Steve Morse is an obvious choice. You can hear his influence on
Petrucci after just one listen. Rabin is great at the odd time things and has
tremendous chops. His tones are pretty different from Petrucci's though, so
he'd have to work on that. Besides, I'd love to hear Trevor add some great
harmonies to James. The though gives me chills.

    Bass: Billy Sheehan.
I'd say Geddy or Steve Harris, but to be honest, I don't think either
of them have the necessary chops. Billy is more of a straight-ahead guy
normally, but I know he could play Myung's parts. Of course, Sheehan has never
used a six string to my knowledge. This is difficult.

Drums: Neil, Mark Zonder (FW), or (I don't want to say it) Vinny Paul
Neil would be great, but I don't know if he has Portnoy's double bass
ability. Mark Zonder would probably work really well, and I think Paul could
probably pull it off, too. I just can't see him play Innocence Faded or
    Surrounded. That's funny.

    Vocals: ????
The only person that comes to mind with James quality is Geoff Tate,
but he sounds nothing like James.

Keys: oh, that one guy, you know--KEVIN MOORE!!

Sorry for the long post, but i think this is a cool topic.

    Hey, Guys and Girls -

I can't help but be a little bitter concerning the recent state of the
ytsejam. It makes me sad to see something that was so cool (700-800s)
become such a cesspool of disrespect and anger. What used to be a
virtually flame-free mailing list (except for those Franks and
SloppieJoes) is now a hellish inferno. No information about Dream Theater
is being presented. People are posting favorite band lists, favorite this
and that lists, and bootleg lists. Anyone attempting to post a bootleg
list in the past was toasted and his best chance of survival was to say
it was a mistake. Here are the facts that have been presented recently:
    1) Shannon Hood is dead 2) Malmsteen's not so bad, 3) There aren't a
lot of speedy femal guitarists, 4) Everyone on the list is angry, and
    5) DT is doing a few concerts.

On that note, let's hear more about DTs "tour." Is it a tour? Is it just
a few shows before they head back to the studio? How's the transcription
of ACOS going? Next thing you know someone will be sending chain mail to
the jam :). Lets see a little respect and intelligence. Not to mention DT
    content.

And if you're sick of all the bitterness, e-mail me to get on the list
for the Don Digest, it comes with a complete no-flame guarantee.

Someone asked last jam about getting into the New Jersey show if you're
under 18. It ain't gonna happen. Me and some friends went to the summer
show there, and were rejected at the door, because one my friends had no
ID (even though he was 20, and looked 25). A fake ID might be your only
option, if you really want to see the show. I remember they wouldn't
even let some guy in who had ID, because they thought it was his
    brother's ID. Good luck!

Well now...I was sitting here watching all these posts about the
CT show, and the NY show and how all these people are going and
how they are all getting together and all that good stuff, and
i'm wondering to myself, "Is *anyone* going to the NJ show????"
So I decide to post something today to that effect when low and behold
in Jam #1070, not one but *two* people post regarding the
Jersey show AND they are coming up from Baltimore where I am coming
from! So...count me in on whatever get-together planning starts up,
    I'm 23 so I can go anywhere...well almost anywhere.

My top five....oh forget it. :-)

    'jammers,

I think every few months we should post info regarding the ytsejam for
new subscribers. To you new people: That was NOT John Petrucci who
posted, so take it easy. This is a joke that's been done before.

I think some people need to lighten up. I agree that distasteful
comments about BM shouldn't be posted, but it's hard for a lot of people
to feel bad about someone dying that they don't know, and I don't think
there are evil for posting jokes. Some people deal with things that
way. How many of us have joked about Elvis or Liberace?

Fred: I think you asked about DT's CD's. Definitely pick up Live at the
Marquee. It's great quality. I'd pick up WDADU although I hardly listen
to it, but it made me appreciate James LaBrie when I heard him sing The
Killing Hand. If you're low on money go for LatM. Also, I'd pick up
Fates Warning Parallels as a first try. I still haven't got the new
Fates but it's just a collection of older stuff in general.

Er, just read the message from a certain John Petrucci... Is this the real
John Petrucci? Going by the address, I presume it's his wife's address.
Anyway, as to what he said, well it certainly says something to all the
'Jammers who've been quite sick in their responses about the subject. Even
JP (who was after all, the target, along with the rest of DT, of the Blind
Melon comments) has the humanity to post a message of respect like that. It
shows that this Blind Melon thing was blown out of all preportion by the
Jam, and SH's untimely death showed from the messages posted, who on the
'Jam was taking it far too seriously. The joking should have stopped with
SH's death. Hopefully, now it has.

    Hi everyone,
those of you familiar with Shadow Gallery, could you please
e-mail me and tell me what their earlier album is like? See,
I bought the "Carved in Stone" CD for a friend today and
it sounded ok.. But at the shop they also had one CD from 1992,
I can't remember the name though. The shopkeeper told me the
newer one is heavier, but when I listened to it, it didn't seem
that heavy.. Lots of piano stuff. How is the older one, compared
to "Carved in Stone"? Thanks in advance for any comments..

    As for DT content,
has everyone noticed that Portnoy uses this same interesting fill
twice during ACOS.. Being a total idiot when it comes to musical theory,
I can't describe it intelligently. The kick drum sort of carries the
fill, but a cymbal and the snare are used as well. I think the first
time is around Another World, and that time it's quite slow.. But
it is repeated during The Inevitable Summer, faster.

Ok. That was boring news. I just thought I have to come up with
DT content since everyone is so grumpy nowadays about what people
    post on the list :-)

    Stay happy,

    1. If you already like a song what difference does it make whether the song was written under the influence of something? If Kevin Moore was ill and took some codeine while writing Metropolis, does that mean that it is no longer an incredible song?

    2. I suspect that someone in DT drank a cup of coffee while writing their songs. Coffee contains caffeine which is a drug. Does that mean you now no longer have any respect for them?

    3. A person should be allowed to do whatever that person wants to do as long as they are not hurting anyone else. Just because their code of morality is different from yours does not mean that they should be condemned.

As an example, Marijuana is legal in many countries and is part of their cultural heritage. Does that mean that their culture is reprehensible? Some cultures consider caffeine to be at least as evil as marijuana--should all caffeine drinkers be condemned?

This whole attitude of condemning people whether they are musicians, drug users, or short-hairs is the source of much strife. Try to get along :)

Just for the record, neuroscience has shown that there *are* differences in brain structure between the sexes (Kandel/Schwarz 1985:771-783). These are caused by the introduction of testosterone during a critical period. So some things really *are* related to gender differences. On the other hand, just because the structures are different does not mean that one is "better" than the other.

Studies have shown that aggressive behavior appear to be tied to sex (in rats), but I personally feel that nurture has as much influence as nature in this situation.

    Hello Jammers,

Someone asked about getting the Ivanhoe release Symbols of Time. You can e-mail the following to people, they should have it in stock, or can get it.

lasercd@aol.com The Laser's Edge run by Ken Golden genesisman@aol.com Sights and Sounds I forget who runs this shop

There is also a FAQL that is part of the rec.music.progressive FAQL that has a list of dealers in progressive and import music.

Please note that these people do not sell bootlegs, just legitimate import releases. They are a much cheaper and more reliable way to get import music than to trust CDEurope.

Eventually this document will be on my WWW page.

    Hey Jammers,

Someone [who? I dunno] said: > have powerful urges to send dt a big fat message saying that if they ever > use drugs i'm going to kick their ass. not that i'm that pompous, it's just > that i think it would pain me much to hear that the music that moves me so > was created through or even by someone using some substance i don't > appreciate/understand/condone. not to mention that drugs would most likely > lead to the end or upset of dt. maybe i'm just a prude. > > anyone else feel this way also?

I wonder what effect they drugs have had on Kevin Moore and his decision to leave Dream Theater -- the stuff on his demo "get that sh*t outta my face it only makes me happy anyway" (somebody >please< correct me if I've misquoted Moore I don't have the lyrics around) leads me to believe he has some acquaintance with mind-altering substances.

"Find all you need in your mind" -- >thought itself< is a mind-altering thing. Many is the time when we have an idea and it makes us "change our minds."

"Robert Quezada" replied to Someone's post like this: > In a way, I do. I'd never tell DT that I'd kick their ass, though. > They'd probably kick mine if I tried it. > > If they did drugs when they write any of their songs, I would lose > what respect I have for them as musicians and for their work.

Now I must attempt some mind-alteration by communicating thoughts, because that has to be the most narrow-minded thing I've heard in a few days (and I watched Fidel on CSPAN last night).

Just to get personal here, I find sports repugnant. We are two centuries in to the Industrial Revolution (it isn't over yet) and physical competition is still an important part of too many people's lives!

I found out here on Ytsejam that Mike Portnoy is a boxing fan, even to the point of wearing a "Free Mike Tyson" shirt.

Big deal. I want to hear him play drums excellently. That he spends >his< time watching brain-damaged gladiators pummel each other is not much of an issue to me. I personally would rather him read Heinlein (who occasionally watched televised football! The horrors!) or Niven than watch boxing, but it's >his< time.

If watching boxing while playing drums helps him play, the more the better!

Don't even get me started on Jon Anderson's ecostupidity, or Paul McCartney's vegetarianism, or Don Henly's socialist politics. I still enjoy their music (lyrics, in Henly's case). The only musicians the p*ss me off with their views/hobbies/whatever are the ones who die from them - Hendrix, Mercury, etc., and that's because I'm selfish and wanted to hear more of their music but in the end it's all >their< lives anyway.

Sorry for bogarting the bandwidth. Just give me weed, whites, and wine! -Todd ps: "whites" refers to "white cross" (ephedrine), those are Little Feat lyrics not a David Duke speech.
