It was Bafu, I think, who asked what songs would you use to describe
you? It was a quite bizarre question, and as such got me thinking.
It's quite neat, actually, and now that I came up with some for me
I just gotta share (always a sucker for an audience):
Marillion: Grendel (my personal theme, I view it), The Web
The Cure: Secrets, A Hundred Years, Sinking
Nine Inch Nails: Wish, Gave Up, The Downward Spiral
Sarah McLachlan: Ice (Freedom Sessions), Fear
and last, probably least... Dream Theater: Space Dye Vest
---Someone suggested DT doing a fusion album next. Yes! The fusion in DT has always been the thing I loved the most. The soloing, such as Petrucci's playing (cf. "Alien Chase on Arabian Desert" by Al Di Meola), seems often jazz-inspired. The instrumentals on Images and Words, which annoyed the hell out of me at first because they were so unstructured, now perfectly exemplify what I love about the band--and they're essentially long fusion jams: a couple instruments lay out the chords and rhythm and the soloist plays over it.
So the influence is there. DT's already done the progrock thing, the heavier-than-thou thing, so now they should do the fusion thing. If anyone ever has a chance to talk to the band, tell them that it would hunt down every ass that got kicked by the riff in ACoS and give them a couple more so they don't forget, as well as catch any ass which somehow slipped by the first time. I'd love to see some heavy fusion, with epic songs--a twist DT could introduce to the field.
I'd especially like to add darkness to the music. It's a shame, but the only dark fusion songs I can think of offhand are "Wings of Karma" by Mahavishnu Orchestra and "For Calvin (And His Next Two Hitchhikers)" by Frank Zappa. There is a definite niche for dark fusion in my collection.
Of course, I know if I want it done I'd probably have to do it myself. Can't dictate other bands. So, anyone in the Gainesville area interested in epic fusion with angry, despairing lyrics and tone?
---
Non-DT tidbit (B5): After "The Long Twilight Struggle" last night, I needed something to play while I netsurfed for discussion. I stumbled upon Golgotha, _Unmaker of Worlds_. Frighteningly appropriate, don't you think?

A couple of us Baltimore area jammers are thinking of coming up to the New Jersey show. Is anyone making plans to have any type of get together either before or after the show? Does anyone know of a good (and fairly cheap!) hotel in the area that we could crash at for the night?
Is this a general addmision show? How much are tickets? Do they still have alot left?
I'm guessing it will take us just under 3 hours to get there. It took us just under 2 hours to get to Camden for the Qryche show and I've heard that Old Bridge is about another 1 north . Is this about right?
Thanks for any info you can provide on this show!!

Mike Bahr,
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
I received AD #107 last week, and love it. The sound quality is excellent, and the content is unbelievable!!! I am a huge fan of "acoustic" music, and this is a dream to hear DT in a "simpler" form.
So far, my favorite cut is L.I.E. This thing smokes.
The treatment of LSOAD is wonderful. James does some great things during AD as well.
OK. Enough already. To any DT fan who hasn't picked this up yet, get it while you can!!!!
Ivanhoe:
Someone earlier posted about Ivanhoe. Where did you get it? I checked CDNOW and they didn't have it. I have scoured the local record stores (when will we stop calling them record stores and start calling them something else?) and can't find it there either. Any pointers would be helpful. ------------------------------------------------------------------ "...the voice of reason against the howling mob" "Nobodys Hero" - Rush Jamie Burks - jburks@pcs.mv.com ------------------------------------------------------------------

I need help.
I missed the JP clinic in Charlotte by two days and I was wondering if anyone managed to tape any of his clinics. I am a guitarist myself and JP is probably my biggest influence. I've heard that it was n't a show to be missed, and I do the unthinkable and miss it! I would be very grateful if anyone who did tape it (audio or video) would e-mail me and let me know. I have several imports myself and I wouldn't mind dubbing one of them in exchange for a copy of a JP clinic. (or Portnoy clinic for that matter)
List of imports: Dance of Eternity (2cd) Majestic Harmonies cd Comedy cd Caught in a Web (tape) Live at the Marquee cd When Dream and Day Unite cd Lie uk single cd Silent Man single cd Live in Tokyo (video) not an import
My e-mail address is: WP1839@appstate.edu
I also would like to thank those of you who responded to my "guitar setup" question. I'm glad that the drummers and bass players, as well as keyboard players responded. It was very informative. Thanks Jammers, Brandon P.

I am in a serious jam. I've been anxiously awaiting DT's arrival to the east coast for some time now and just bought a ticket to see them in Old Bridge, NJ. However, I am only 17 and I was told that you must be 18 to get in and ID will be checked. If it helps I will be within a month of 18 at the end of December, I'll be with one of my friends who is 18, and I DO NOT have a fake ID. (Please don't reccommend me to get one cause I don't want to go to that extent) What I need are some tips on how I could possibly get in from anyone whose been at these kind of shows before. I would be greatly pleased if anyone could help me out. Please reply e-mail. Thanks in advance.

Greetings, This is not DT related: Some people have enquired as of late about how to obtain material on the Magna Carta label (bands like Magellan, Cairo, Shadow Gallery, + Yes and Pink Floyd tribute albums). Well, through no fault of my own, I found their address on Yes' home page th other day. MAGNA CARTA 208 EAST 51 ST. SUITE 1820 NEW YORK NY 10022 I think they charge $15.98 (shipping incl.) per cd for domestic orders. You'd think they would have an e-mail address or something, but I didn't find one. Kyle

Jammers---
_Guitar for the Practicing Musician_ has done interviews with the guitarists of Blind Melon and Dream Theater. In the BM interview, it was said that DT does not play 'real music', and the comments show a very condescending attitude toward John P. Months later, in GFTPM's DT interview, John comments briefly on the attack in a totally gracious manner. He seemed nonchalant about the whole thing.
Having a fellow member of the human race pass away is no laughing matter. However, I am not a fan of blind melon, and I believe that John showed all of us maturity and respect for other musicians and their music - which seemed to be qualities that the members of BM lack.
How many guitarists and musicians out there think there's a correlation between how "good" you are, and how many musical styles and experiences you expose yourself to?

Doesn't this mailing list exist to talk about DT and related topics? I think it's time to get back to that. The only thing I wish death upon is the BM bashing/Shannon Hoon is dead thread.
Anyway, a non-Ytsejammer DT fan has introduced me to a wonderful new band - DOGMA. At first listen, I really liked it. He described them as sort of a non-MIDI version of Tangerine Dream. I'm not familiar with TD, but I'll take his word for it. To me, they're a lighter sound, not blatantly Brazillian (in case y'all were wondering where they were from), but some of the music is reminiscent of Yanni, and Joe Satriani - therefore, you get "Joe Satri-Yanni." (so I use up my bad pun limit for today) Unfortunately, I don't believe their recordings are available in the US. However, when there's good music that is meant to be heard, one will find a way to get it heard.
Sorry to get your hopes up, and let you down like that, but I just had to tell people who would care.

To the good guys, It has become painfully obvious that we have some real assholes on this list. On the other hand, it has become equally obvious that there are some very nice, intelligent, mature people on the list as well. To all you decent folks out there, we should try to hang onto the positive. It is always shocking to encounter such mindless hatred and stupidity, but we all know those people exist. Ignore them, pay attention to the good guys. JP wrote us a note (thanks!), and its good to know the band belongs to the good guy group. Mike S.
(Disclaimer: good guys and bad guys is a simplistic concept that should not be taken literally, nor as broad generalization. Women are included in the term "guys", both good and bad. The comments above are fictitious and any resemblance to real people, either living or dead is entirely coincidental ....)

A few messages have surfaced on the jam from John Petrucci... The last one said: "Death is the first dance eternal"
May Shannon Hoon rest in peace...
When I spoke with Portnoy's wife down at the Drum Expo, she mentioned that John and Rena did not have on-line access and that someone had posed as John Petrucci on the jam in the past... They all got a kick out of it. Just passing along information...

I hope this idea generates some good discussion. Or am I throwing something out in hopes of killing the Blind Melon thread?
Hypothetical Situation:
DT has just released an album and they plan to embark on their biggest world tour yet. However, one of the members fell ill, and won't be able to perform until a third of the way into the tour. They don't want to cancel any dates. Who would you suggest as a replacement for those concert dates? Disregard music industry politics, logistics, etc. But do take into account that this person won't have much more time than Derek did when he was called upon. Who would you like to see or who do you think could fill in temporarily for Portnoy, Petrucci, LaBrie, Myung, or Sherinian? (Jordan Rudess has already filled in before Derek joined, we know he can do it, but who else can?)
So who is worthy enough to sit in for a member of DT for a couple of shows? Whose hands would you place this most daunting task within? Do you think anyone can do it? If you don't say so, and state your reasons. "Because they're gods," won't cut it, though that statement is not that far from the truth.

To all of you ytsejammers, This is my first posting to the list but I've got a lot to say. Just when I'm about to say something, I get the next listing that has what I would've said!!!! First of all, I'm at URI and I would definitely like to see DT again at the El n' Gee club. If there's anymore stuff about it, please post it. Second, what's all this Blind Melon stuff?? I must say that at first it was pretty funny and I was even going to say something. But then the vocalist dies and everyone is mocking him, everyone is giving cheap shots, and then there's subscribers complaining of immaturity!!!! I'm not trying to set an example, but did anyone notice that at the bottom of 1068, Mr. Petrucci simply stated that Shannon rest in peace??? The end. Sympathetic, professional, and straightforward. All you guys are so proud of DT because of their "brains and professionalism" and then you kill it for them. Sure I could imagine Portnoy having a smartass comment but different tastes in music, no matter how crappy they may seem to others, shouldn't reflect apathy towards the death of a human being. Hell, Shannon didn't even make any comments about DT. There really isn't much more I can say without repeating myself. Maybe you guys will get over it and grow up after awhile. . . I guess there's a favorite bands thing going, so here's mine: 1) Dream Theater 2)Extreme 3)Elton John 4)Queensryche 5)Yngwie Malmsteen. That's it for now. . .Sorry if this seems to long. *********************************************************** ** -I'm sick of all you hypocrites holding me at bay ** ** And I don't need your sympathy to get me through ** ** the day. ** ** -DREAM THEATER- ** *********************************************************** ANDREW (Boofa)

Hello Jammers,
I can't believe what has happened to the digest over the weekend while I was at Busch Gardens. The digest is now a Blind Melon forum, an innocent member of Blind Melon dies, people rag on him, come on, this subject should be dropped, and should have been dropped, I got back to find 15 digests in my box for one weekend! Give it a break guys and girls!
I decided I could handle a trek to New Jersey if people were driving accross the country just to see Dream Theater. I am still sad that I didn't drive up to see one of the summer shows. Does anyone have any comments about the venue itself, size, quality. I send my thanks out to the guy who has compiled all of the gig info for the Christmas tour, a beer for you if I run into you at the show!
Later,
Mike Backof

Hello Jammers,
Everyone who has received confirmation messages on money orders being received as of October 23rd should get their disks by Nov 5th though Nov 15th. (It should be closer to the 5th) The order was so big I split it in two so that the people who have already sent me the money won't have to wait. The people who haven't got me the money yet have still got time, I am going to hold the second order until I get 2/3 of the remaining money. That should be by the beginning of next week. Those people should see their CDs around November 15th through Nov 24th.
For everyone who missed out on this Live CD order, I will probably do another in January since this one is going well at the moment.
E-mail me with questions and comments

Seems a lot of people are all broke up about the dead mellon. Someone even asked what his offenses were...
Well
* he was a career drug addict and criminal * he OD'ed, leaving a wife and child * he urinated on fans at one show
See, it has less to do with the guitarists in the band than he himself. I thought this was obvious, but maybe I should be more explicit when I post next time. I'm still glad he's dead... I think most drug addicts should die. And I find it hard to be anything but happy when someone who obviously has so little respect for human life offs themself. I mean, he had no respect for human life if that's the way he chose to live, right?
I think it's sick to feel sympathy for him.
Whatever. I guess this is slightly better than those stupid top 5 posts. :)

I got email from someone accusing me of being a red-neck pro-lifer because I quoted Ted Nugent regarding Cobain's death.
1) I live in Philadelphia. No rednecks here that I know. 2) I took a friend to an abortion clinic twice. 3) I watched two people get shot at a distance close enough for me to identify the gun, in a bar. 4) I am the furthest thing from racist. Ask any of my co-workers at my previous job. Or the customers.
That being said, the DT content.
The other night, I was over at my band's house. Seeing as two of them are Zep-Heads, I popped in Rover/Achillies/Song for them to listen to, just so I could clarify for myself what part was what, since I'm not a big Zep fan. Anyway, I asked the drummer what he thought (since he's probably the most opinionated person I know...seeing as he's a drummer from Long Island...hehe...) about it, and he said:
"This is the best version I've heard short of Page/Plant or Zeppelin."
He also commented that John's guitar "wasn't raw enough." I said, "Well, he's a better player." He didn't argue. =)
Anyway... -Hairball
