Solace? Because a man who they didn't really know, who didn't know them,
who didn't give a shit about them as a person, only as a member of the group
of fans, died? If you have a hard time dealing with the death of one of the
members of a band you really like than your priorities are screwed. Sure
you can feel a little sad, but it should in no way have an effect on your
life. I think people like that need to get a life. Wah wah wah. Kurt
Cobain died. Wah wah wah, Jerry Garcia died. Wah wah wah, that putz from
Blind Melon died. So what? These same people don't give a damn when people
a great deal more important than these individuals die. The collective lot
of them aren't worth very much to society. True they make music, but if
they were never hear there would be someone else making music. Damn, I
can't stand people who grow more attached to celebrities that they don't
know personally than those that really count. It is disgusting!

    Jammers,

I picked up some nice DT stuff this weekend and thought I'd let
you in on their existance. The first item was a concert video
"Live In Japan" recorded 1/25/95 during the Awake tour. A few
casual moments with the band at the beginning of the tape as they
are presented with platinum albums for Awake, then a killer show.
All in all, about 2 hours worth. There was no markings on the tape
whatsoever and the credits at the end were in Japanese. The shop
where I bought this also had 2 "Italian imports" ;). The first
was titled "Live Images" and was all the songs from I&W plus A
Fortune in Lies and was a single disc. A second 2disc boot was
from the same show as the the video and I can't remember the name
of this disc. They were priced at $30 and $60, and I couldn't
afford them, since I also got the Silent Man and Lie singles and
Carved in Stone by Shadow Gallery and Vemod by Anekdoten. I also
spotted the Lie single at a new Best Buy here in town this weekend.
Anyway, the store with the DT boots is Life By Design, 129 Wahsatch
Ave, Colo Spgs Co 80903 (719)475-0937 in case anyone is interested.
I'm just a customer and have no other connection to these folks,
but I'm impressed with their selection of Prog and Metal.

    Other thoughts on recent Jams:

We've done this 5 favorite/influential/whatever threads to death.
How about replacing these kinds of threads with a now playing
type one-liner. That way we can still see what everyone else is
into, but not fill up mailboxes. I don't object to non-DT content,
but 6 jams a day puts me way behind.

To those asking about King Crimson, I saw them earlier this year
at the Warfield in SF and have 2nd row tickets for this Sundays
show in Colorado Springs. These guys will always put on an excellent
show and should not be missed if they are anywhere in your area.
Some of the tunes, particularly those written by Belew, are more
pop influenced, but they are all master musicians and Robert Fripp
can shred with the best of them, though he seems to be soloing
less with this band. GO SEE THEM!

    Hi everyone,

I haven't seen this posted yet and I hate to be the bearer of bad news,
but... I just got some definitive confirmation on a rumor I first heard last
week. (No, not the "Kevin Moore has cancer" thing! :)

Jim Pitulski, one of DT's managers (and also one of the nicest human beings
on this planet, IMO), has left DT's management company, Round Table
    Entertainment.

I'm not sure exactly what this split means for the band at this point, but DT
will definitely be carrying on with their US dates & tour of Japan as
    scheduled.

Apparently, the parting of ways was amicable, DT is staying with RT, and Jim
plans to continue with his career separately. (In case some of you didn't
know, Jim started RT with Rob Shore originally just to manage DT.)

I'll post if I hear anything new...

I'm sure going to miss him. :(

    Take care everyone,

    Hi there,

I'm currently wading my way through 20 jam's. 8^< I was only away from the
uni for 5 days! I've lost count of the number of favourite 5 bands etc
    postings that I've skipped through.

I'm going to the Satch gig at the SECC in Glasgow on 14th Dec. Do any
jammers who are going want to meet up?

Does anyone own any of the "bonus" tracks from this show? I've looked
everywhere and no one seems to know what I'm talking about. I've heard
these tracks consist of Metallica's Damage Inc. and Rush's Tears. Are
there any others? If you do have these please tell me where I can get
them, or dub them. I posted my list of imports earlier this morning. So
maybe we can work something out.

    5-favorite non-DT bands.....1)Metallica 2)Pantera 3)Iron Maiden
4)Rush 5)Megadeath ....and if Steve Vai, Satriani, or Stevie Ray
Vaughn counted then the list would be very different.

It seems that this list just keeps rolling along. There is always a
thread for someone, or everyone, to jump onto.

I just read through 7 posts left over the weekend. I didn't realize that
there were so many of us out there.

I loved BM's first album, but I think the second lacked the energy. I
don't agree with drugs, or what they stand for, but I'm not about to tell
someone how to live their life.
I just had to put something about BM, everybody else is doing it why
    can't I?

I see that Al Balkewicz (aka IMHO Jeremy Haynes II) has returned. My question
is where are my 3 videos that are owed to me since February. Why am i posting
this to the jam, you ask? The reason is that I am bitter and I do not
want anyone else to be ripped off by this guy. I sent the tapes on my
end to him within a week of when we made the deal. He of course had said
at the time, I will get them out within a week as well. Then there was
the constant excuses for not getting the tapes out. this went on for
quite awhile until there was no response to my emails. Now here
we are over 8 months later and I do not have my tapes. He has returned
to the jam. I want my tapes. I sincerely doubt I will ever see the
    tapes that are owed me.

I am sure that he will give many excuses why he could not get the tapes
to me. Dont believe any of them. It only takes a couple of hours to
dub a video cassette. Actually only a couple of minutes. 1. you put a tape
in each vcr. 2. push play on the source and record on the destination.
    3. come back 2 hours later and throw the tape into the mail.

HOW HARD ISA THAT? I am a busy person but I got the tapes out immediately.
Why did he say "I will get them out this weekend" if he knew he was full of
it? Because he is a ripoff.

My warning to all is do not trade with Al Balkewicz. The reason I posted
this was because I saw that he was back on the jam and I do not want anyone
else to become disgruntled as I have with trading with people on the net.

I do believe that most people on the net who trade are very honest and
do trade well but Al and Jeremy Haynes are excuse ridden ripoffs.

Well, now that I have vented. I still do not feel better.

    disgruntled trader

I'm sorry, but i made a very large error in my last post. please note:

Steve Morse wasn't involved with any kind of drugs.

I *meant* to write Steve Walsh. I don't know, I guess the Kansas connection
got me mixed up, I confuse the two often. I'm very sorry, it was an honest
    mistake.

    again:

Steve Morse was not what I meant to write. It was a mistake. I wasn't
refering to any kind of drug abuse on his part. I made a mistake. Again,
    I'm sorry.

I hope this doesn't lead to an endless "what's this with Steve Morse?"
posts. I feel like an ass here.

One last time: it wasn't Steve Morse I meant to write, it was Steve Walsh.

I'll post this again later just to make sure everyone catches it. I don't
want to attach any kind of drug stigma to Morse's name. He's a great
musician (not that Walsh isn't) and I respect him to death (Walsh too).
    Please forgive me.

the revolution has gone wrong. sorry. Matt

    Okay,
At the music store down the street I found for the first time When Dream
and Day Unite and the bootleg "DT Live at the Marquee". Does anyone out
    there have any
opinions they could share with me about these two albums? I can't dig up

What I want to know is, is WD&DU more like I&W or Awake? I highly prefer
Awake due to its darker and heavier sound, and would like to know what WD&DU
is like before I buy it.
Also, I saw Fates Warning's latest CD at the store (I've heard them
talked about alot on the YTSE-Jam) and I was curious what kind of music
they play and who they sound like, for if they're anything like DT, I'm
    sure I'd like the album.
While I'm babbling, my top 10 CD's I've been playing lately:
    1)ACoS 2)Extreme-Waiting for the Punchline 3)24-7 Spyz-Temporarily
    Disconnected 4)Shootyz Groove-Jammin' in a Vicious Environment 5)Awake
    6)Extreme-III Sides to Every Story 7)Flesh-Flesh 8)Living Colour-Biscuits
    9) 24-7 Spyz-Strength in Numbers 10)Inside Out-No Spiritual Surrender

I went home from college this weekend, and decided to go to Tower Records
and Media Play on Saturday. In Media Play, I was fortunate enough to find the
ONLY copies of Live at the Marquee and the LIE single that they had!!! I LOVE
the LIE single!!! To Live Forever is teriffic, but I wish that it contained
the complete solo, like on Live in Tokyo. Then, I decided to go to Tower, and
boy was I unimpressed! All of the DT that they had was ACoS, Awake, and I&W.
But, while browsing around Tower, I noticed the Billboard Top 200 list. To my
amazement, DT was at 118! But even more amazing, it peaked last week at #58!
I know it's not that high, but I didn't even expect to see it on the
list...ever! You know what that means? It means that at least SOME people are
beginning to see how good DT is, and that it is worth buying (unlike that
screaming, lackluster, no-talent, BS that is called "popular"!!! Way to go
DT!!! Well, that's my little speech for the day.

         See you all later,

Attention keyboard players: I need big help!!! I'm a righty 5-string
bassist. I also play acoustic guitar (albeit not extremely well).
Furthermore, I'm a comp sci student, so I'm constantly typing. You'd
figure I have pretty strong hands, right? Wrong! I've been working on
this song that I'm writing. I got the idea, tried playing it on guitar,
and decided that I'm not good enough on gtr yet to switch chords fast
enough. So, I'm doing most of the writing/arranging on the piano now. I
guess I should let you know that I haven't played a piano in years. Anyway,
the more I work, the bigger the song gets. The bigger the song gets, the
more I screw up. The more I try, the more my left hand hurts. Now I'm
working with 3- and 4-finger octave-sized chords with the left hand (they
sound cool as shit!), while trying to play chords and a melody with the
right. The right hand is doing ok, but my left is missing keys, flubbing
notes, and cramping up. So: 1) Am I doing something wrong? Hand
position, sitting position, whatever? 2) What can I do to strengthen my
left hand? It's been quite humbling for me. I can play lots of fast
stuff on the bass, so I never expected to have left-hand problems. HELP!

    Thanks in advance,
    -Chris

Are there any Marillion fans on the Ytsejam? I saw a few people list them as a
fave, but I haven't seen much on the band. Given their relationship with DT,
you know that Hogarth and Rothery performed at the Ronnie Scott's gig, I think so
some DT fans would be interested in hearing about Marillion. I would like to kn
ow if there are any Jammers who share an interest in Marillion, since they are a
great band, and they write incredibly strong material. Any responses would be
cool. Let's talk about what album is your favorite and why, and why can't they
seem to find success in America.

Many digests ago, there was a reference to the Guitarist of the Year award
given out by some Japanese magazine, and that the 1st place award was given
based soley on picking speed. Then in YJ 1012 Erik Wolfe said Malmsteen
produced "Useless shred." I have had it! Malmsteen is incredible, really.
I hope most of you have heard him. I think his guitar solos are very well
thought out. As for him being fast...nobody can say he isn't. However, I'm
sure he could play faster if he just wanted to shred. The following is
quoted from Guitar World, and reprinted on his "Collection" CD:
"The first thing one notices about his solos, aside from the pronounced
classical infulence, is Yngwie's wickedly fast technique. 'It's not playing
fast in itself that appeals to me,' he says. 'Speed can be very dramatic if
done in addition to playing slow--it's a great contrast. It's also important
to me that what I play fast will also sound good if the same notes are played
at a slower speed. The reason I play a lot of fast licks is because that's
what a lot of people want to hear, to a certain extent.
'But I don't consider myself a very fast player. I'm sure other guitarists
can play faster. What I do that a lot of other guys don't do is I don't play
things that are rubbish. I play classical runs, arpeggios and broken chords
that if played at a slower speed would sound very nice as well. But if it's
done very fast and very clean, but not necessarily as fast as someone else,
it'll appear much faster because it actually makes more sense.'"

I had responede to the 1st place "slam" earlier, but due to some
miscommunication (Probably AOL's fault) it either never made it to YJ, or I
missed the Digest it was in. Malmsteen is awesome. If you don't appreciate
him his music, fine, but don't slam his playing ability, or classical-based
    solos.

    Hi Jammers,

This is a review of A Change Of Seasons which appears in the new
issue (November 1995) of Metal Hammer here in the UK:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

So the Internet finds a new use: Recorded in response to requests
from computer techno-crazy fans, this mini-album's title track twists
and turns through 23 minutes of complex musical imagery. A melting
pot of time-changes and varying moods, 'Seasons' is by turns gentle,
dramatic and even fearsome; an epic adventure that will delight
    devotees of the band.
And those live tracks? As someone who missed the show, hearing a
remarkably faithful rendition of Deep Purple's 'Perfect Strangers' in
its entirety, followed by brief morsels of various classic songs, is
quite odd. And although each cover holds a trace of the original
artists (particularly Pink Floyd's 'In The Flesh'), the Dreamer's
precise musical personalities are so strong that every new
composition is impregnated with a level of performance perfection
that all but eradicates any hint of a live atmosphere.
No sweat, no fire - a definate case of 'Ya shoulda been there'.
'Seasons is a must for Dream Theater fans, but that is really the
    extent of its commercial appeal.

Also along those lines...I think that it is soooo cool that all the computer
science majors or programmers use the "stab" technique to type. Not the
traditional "asdf" right hand, "jkl;" left hand crap.
    Trey Allen stopped---

I can't stand going into typing class and being forced to do the 'asdf'
right hand, 'jkl;' left hand method. I can't see the keys with my arms
crossed like that, yet they insist that's how it be done.

The beginning of Innocence Faded sounds an awful lot like some Melrose
Place- or 90210-type music. Every time that song comes on I just feel
like doing a commercial for one of those shows... heh

    Steve,

What's up?!?!? Man, I thought you were pretty cool, what with your
"shredder-knowledge" equalling mine. Why now do you go and do something like
this "stereotypes and shredders" thing you posted? I understand EVERY point
you made, as I DO read the articles I reply to (as does Margaret, I assure
you) and I understand the need to feel like you are defending yourself... but
this is at LEAST a BIT overboard.

From what I read, your original statement about women and guitars was
not really insulting (but then, I'm a man.... I might not have noticed.) but
I can see where one would find sexist tones in it. In MY OPINION, gender has
VERY little to do with being "Savage" OR with playing guitar. I think
society dictates that, and no matter how unique or "non-conformist" we think
we are, society has considerably helped mold us into the people we are. Men
more savage than women (yeah, Steve, regardless of whether or not you
actually said it in THOSE exact words, you DEFINATELY implied it)? I could
introduce you to some women that might make you look gentle. In music?
Hmmmm, Steve. Do you really consider Dream Theater to be savage? More so
than L7 or Hole? I don't know.... they are much more talented, but that
usually leads to precision... not savagry. So obviosly gender doesn't play a
great role in how savage a musician is. The fact is, you DID broadcast a
message to everyone, regardless of whether or not we can "Know what you were
    thinking."

Now, regarding making something a gender issue... you were full of shit
big time there (pardon the expression... I'm not angry, it's just my
vernacular). If you would like to go back and read the articles you two have
written, it's YOU that stresses the gender issue. You went way overboard in
    that one too.

She thang? No man, I'm SURE she was not harpin' on you for that one.
Don't put words into people's mouths. Just because a woman has to fight for
the status she achieves in the music industry, doesn't mean she's a feminazi
(I know, nowhere in your statements do you call anyone feminazi... I just
like saying it. C'mon everyone, say it with me - FEMINAZI :) or a big
follower of women's music, as you said it. Wouldn't you hate it if everyone
threw you into a class of people just because you happen to like what you do?

Bottom line is, sometimes sarcasm can be a fun thing (asshole)... but
sometimes it's not taken the way it was meant. That's no one's fault - it's
a communication barrier. I didn't see what she said in response to your post
as any more derogatory than what you originally posted. Yeah, she got
steamed. You work with sarcasm, be prepared for that. Your response to hers
was uncalled for. Maybe you can dish it but you can't take it. I don't
know.... I don't want to say that about you. You seem like a cool person.
You just went overboard here, trying to make her look bad and be a your
witty sarcastic self again. There's a fine line between being
    sarcastic....and being a dick.

If you think there's any more debate to be done, with her OR with me, do
it on E Mail. I think we are boring all the jammers. Don't take this as a
flame. I'm just saying what's on my mind, same as you - same as Margaret.

                                                                                -
    Chris

    Definitely *NOT* Metallica.

There was a thing that happened in the early 80's called the New Wave of
British Heavy Metal (often abbreviated as NWOBHM). Kerrang! Magazine
was there documenting the happenings of the day and although I wasn't
in Britain at that time, I was following along in Kerrang!.

Some of the early bands that were popular were Tygers of Pan Tang, Def
Leppard, Iron Maiden (Dianno), Whitesnake, Rainbow, Scorpions, Saxon,
Gillan, Praying Mantis, Ozzy, and a dozen or so others.

There were also a number of older 70's bands that were still active
like Judas Priest, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, and Queen.

And there were some other bands that were just plain cool like
Marillion, Pallas, Twelfth Night, and Demon :)

After the NWOBHM came the speed metal craze of Metallica, Venom,
et al. So Metallica's out of the running for "the" biggest influence.

Looking at the above list, my guess is that Deep Purple was
    (indirectly) the biggest influence...
