    'jammers,

I guess everyone knows the dude from Blind Melon is dead. I wonder if we
created some bad karma (not that I posted anything about the band).

To Margaret: I noticed you got pissed about Bafu Vai's statement
regarding female guitarists. Okay, there's the odd shredder (Jennifer
Batten), but in general I'd say the majority of shredders are men. I
just think it's the way we're brought up. I think the MAJORITY of web
surfers are male at this point too. It's not a stereotype, it's a fact.
It's unfortunate because I would love to shred with a female guitarist
(or any other musician). Keep shredding!

"I can see much clearer now I'm blind (melon)".

    Hey, Scott.

Well, I love you too, man. Nice to know that we are mild-mannered in our
    old age.

You have no clue as to what I listen to, so don't even begin a discussion
with me about what I know. I know more than you think I do. I was raised on
the oldies, you know, 60s and 50s music, the music that was around while you
were probably shitting in your diaper. I have listened to most of the
seventies classic rock, eighties cheeseball rock, and nineties grunge rock.
You have no clue as to what I know. So don't make your ignorant judgments.
Big deal, so what you were there. Doesn't mean shit. Bet you can't even play
an instrument, and couldn't figure out good music if it squashed your Cd
player, that is if you even own one. You probably still listen to eight-track
    tapes.

"Yeah, the people couldn't play their instruments, but the music was
good." Do you realize just how stupid that kind of statement is? If a person
can't play his instrument, he isn't good, the music isn't good, and
ultimately, the music ends up being repeated, (Green Day). where are the Sex
pistols and all those bands now? The only band I know of is the Ramones, and
with songs like "I wannt be sedated", they are doing a lot to help rock and
roll. Think before you flame, buddy.

            Hi all!

I have just received info on the LP release part for Queen's final
studio album "Made in Heaven" from a friend on the Queen mailing list. It is
a long post therefore if anyone's interested in further information, please
mail me. If I get over a dozen requests then I will post the info, otherwise
everyone will get an individual reply of the info I got.

I heard there are two parties being held on November 5 (Sunday) evening
and the info I have is for the bash held at Los Angeles. The other one takes
place at Michigan I believe. If you guys knows about the Queen mailing list,
requesting info from them may be even faster.

I'm sitting here listening to TDoE, and I had a wierd thought. Wouldn't
it be funny if James started singing the wrong words to "ACoS"?

"I stood outside in the rain for us
    Abuse, and then ignore him"

Maybe I'm warped or something, but I'd probably laugh my ass off at that
    one!

This is NOT a post glorifying the man's death. As much as I disliked BM's
music and attitudes, I am not overjoyed that BM's singer has kicked the
bucket. And yet, I am not sad that he is dead. Mainly because I don't have
sympathy for drug users. They know the risks. So, let's not glorify him like
we did with Cobain, that lame excuse for a man who couldn't deal with his
problems. Gee, did we make it sound like suicide is great after his death or
what? Man, the human race is a bunch of sick fucks.

By the way, to the guy who was looking for other peoplee musicians who
don't use druge, yo found one here. I rarely drink, don't smoke, and have
never touched an illegal drug. Unless you count caffein. (screw the
spelling). So, there are drug-free musicians out there. As for not having to
deal with drugs in the world, you should just lock yourself in your room for
life. Drugs are always out there and we have to stand up for ouselves and say
no. I always told myself that I wasn't going to go out like that. And drugs
are a part of life, but I just stay out of that scene, and what happened to
BM's singer will never happen to me. hope I didn't sound too know it all,
    Scott.

Sounds like a good title for a TSR Roleplaying Game. BUT this is not a
time for humor, it is a time for serious debate, as dictated by Margaret
Pluta's tone. This will be a very long post, so if you're the type to view
controversy and walk the other way, skip it. But if you're a "savage" male
like me, you'll enjoy seeing two people tear at each other's throats.

Let's see, I'll have to juggle quotes by both myself and Margaret for my
grand defense. > will be Margaret's comments, >> will be what I said
    originally.

    > I AM OFFENDED!
    > I found that to be a rather sexist and stereotypical comment. I realize
    > that perhaps this wasn't your original intention, but that's how it was
    > broadcast over the net...

Okay, let's attempt to verify what Margaret has said here. Would all 1200
members of this list please post your impression of what I said and how
you thought it was "broadcast over the net?" If you know what I was
thinking, please tell me, because at the moment I'm pretty certain that
I'm the only one who knows that. But I'm open to your opinions.

Furthermore, Margaret, if you realized that it wasn't my "original
intention," why did you bother flaming me? I could take your statement to
be a profession of hatred towards all men, since I am a male and you're
attacking me on a gender issue, but I know (damn you, Logic, for giving me
reasoning) that you aren't attacking all men, you're just attacking me.
So should I act on this, knowing full well what your "original intention"
    is?

    >> I don't know why this is, but I have never met a female guitar player
    >> that could handle the instrument with intense dexterity. In fact, make
    >> that guitars of any sort, electric or acoustic. Cellos, yes, many.
    >> Violins, yes, many. But for some reason the in-between-sized neck of the
    >> guitar just doesn't seem to be a favorite amongst women. I don't know why
    >> this is, and I don't claim to, but it is what I have observed in the world
    >> of music and I'm baffled.

It might just be me, but I can't find the "This is the truth" or "I know
this because it's true" statements in that whole passage. All I can find
is stuff like, "I don't know why this is," "I don't know why this is and I
don't claim to," and somewhat importantly, "it is what I have observed in
    the world of music."

THEREFORE, the only authority I am using in this statement is my own
experience. If you're a black male and you've been treated like shit by
every police officer you've ever met, you might develop a "theory" that
all cops are assholes. (don't get upset, Steve, I'm trying to make a point
here) Does that make it true? Of course not, but it's what you have
perceived and therefore is ALL YOU KNOW. No one can tell you differently,
because those events are what you have lived and you know they occurred.

What I stated in my post was what I've perceived, so no one can tell me
it's not real because, wake up, this is what life has shown me. I made no
statements of fact, nor did I say, "And I know why this is, let me tell
    you blah blah blah."

    >> Ladies help me out if you agree. It ain't nothin' but a she-thang. I
    >> can bring home the bacon, fried inda pan, never lettin' you forget that
    >> you're a man, fa la la la la...
    >> Oh, sorry, just listening to the radio...

Like that last line says, I was listening to the radio. Calm down, people,
yes there was a minute of the day where I wasn't listening to DT. Anyway,
Salt and Pepa were on singing "Nothin' But A She-Thang," and I happened to
work it into what I was saying. See, it adds to that "sarcasm" thing.
Anyway, if you think it's a sexist thing to say towards women, I suggest
you write to Salt and Pepa and tell them to stop degrading women with
their chauvanistic lyrics. I mean, they do tend to write an awful lot of
    pro-male material.

    >> Back to my master theory, it could be that testosterone leads men to
    >> prefer harder music, seeing as how we're more "savage" than women and
    >> all that.

Here we have more of that "sarcasm" thing. This was directed at those who
refer to men as "savage," which I have been called many times, not because
of my actions or words, but because of my gender.

    >> So we would naturally be the ones to play electric guitars and more
    >> Neanderthalic instruments,

    (sarcasm, what a wonderful device)

    >> Whereas women would gravitate towards graceful, gentle orchestra
    >> strings.

No, I'm not going to say that word again, and you know what I meant when I
wrote this. It's to support the theory of men being savages. I'm
portraying women as gentle, graceful creatures to FURTHER THE IDEA that
men are savages. It's like putting all the weight on one end of a see-saw
to make the other side go up. Bolster one side to make the other side look
worse. You've never argued in this fashion, Margaret?

    >> Yes, that theory makes so much sense, I think I'll forward it to the
    >> guy who said Kevin Moore has testicular cancer. In fact, I heard from a
    >> very reliable demigod that Myung receives his musical inspiration by
    >> having Portnoy drum on his back with carrots.

Hold on, I'm calling my own theory stupid? Back up, folks, that's what I'm
doing! SUPRISE! SARCASM STRIKES AGAIN!! So here I am sarcastically saying
that of course the entire passage is bullshit, when someone takes it all
seriously and flames me to death. Somebody get a leash, we've got to stop
Logic from running rampant like this all over the Ytsejams.

    > As for "gentle" music, because women are "less savage"...

I don't see that second quote in my post.

    > Hey, I was in the pit area for the DT concert, and it was GREAT! If I
    > was the typified "lady", I wouldn't have made it through the show
    > unbruised and unbroken. Also I'm taking classical guitar lessons as part
    > of my major, and I HATE it. Not because I hate classical guitar; I
    > believe there's a lot of talent out there. However, I HATE it because it
    > takes away from my time to practice shredding. And, no, my copy of I&W
    > music _isn't_ merely a decoration for my room.

You have taken your argument too far, and are overshooting what I said
completely. And why would your copy of I&W be a room decoration? You would
be hunted down by the people on this list if they found out you were just
    faking all this time.

    > It may sound as if I'm coming down rather hard on you,

No, not all all. (saracasm at its finest)

    > but this is the type of stereotyping I've been fighting for the past
    > five years.

What, you hate it when men call themselves "savages?" Me too. It's
degrading. Let's start a mailing list.

    > I'd appreciate it if you'd pay attention to the music world around you

Let me quote myself: "...but it is what I have observed in the world of
music..." Sounds like I'm paying attention to the world of music around
me. Or were you reading someone else's post?

    > (ever heard of Jennifer Batten?)

Okay, this comment pissed me off. How many times must I mention Jennifer
Batten before people become aware that have "heard of" her? I've posted
about her four times in the last month that I've been back on the 'Jams.

Yet again I wonder if the people who REPLY to these posts actually READ
THE YTSEJAMS. YES I KNOW WHO JENNIFER BATTEN IS. I was a fan of her before
she had her solo album out.

I could do something childish right now and ask you, Margaret, if you've
ever heard of Jonell Mosser or Joan Armatrading. You probably have, since
you seem to be such a fan and supporter of women in music. Heck, you might
even have an album by one of them. The point here is: if you had never
heard of either of them, would that mean that you aren't paying attention
to the world of music around you? As much as I'd like to accuse you of
something/anything negative considering your attitude towards me, I have
to admit that no, it wouldn't.

    > A very steamed musician...
    > -Margaret Pluta

I'm feeling kind of GRILLED at the moment. Heh heh, "grilled," like
"steamed," heh, a food pun, heh heh... Nevermind...

Twice now in the last month I have been blasted because someone wasn't
aware that I wasn't being serious. The first time was because someone felt
such devotion to DT that they couldn't stand to see their lyrics warped
and twisted. For some unknown reason, that person has yet to flame the
other two people that have written up lyrical parodies since mine.
Strange, maybe that person has just stopped reading the 'Jams altogether.
They still post, though, which brings in even more confusion.

Now, the second time, it's someone who completely missed the idea that
what I wrote was from personal experience, ergo it's all the information I
have to make any judgement of any sort. OF COURSE what I said was WRONG,
because I haven't met every woman on the planet and you don't have to be
very intelligent to know that. Heck, you could be in Blind Melon and know
that. But of small percentage of All Women On Earth who I HAVE met,
several played the cello, and several played the violin or viola, but only
three (3) of the women I have met in my life played the guitar. One
    electric, two acoustic.

You tell me why, Margaret, because I don't know. You obviously must have
some kind of mystical information, otherwise you wouldn't have done
something so silly as to flame me for not knowing. To help you out,
perhaps I could e-mail you their three addresses and you could ask them
why they decided to take up guitar. Then you could write to All Women On
Earth asking the guitar players to get in touch with me. Because that's
the only way you are ever going to prove that what I have lived is just a
    hallucination.

You know, Magellan, I think we COULD see clearer in a virtual reality...

    --ALL READ--NEW INFO--JUST IN--TOP STORY--

Shannon, from Blind Melon was murdered yesterday at "6:00" am. The "killing
hand" has not yet been identified, but several peices of evidence have been
found linking this person to a known group of cult-like individuals known as
the Ytsejammers. A rare compact disc called Subconscious, belonging solely
to the Ytsejammers was found nearby w/ a sharpened edge and blood smeared on
it. This is thought to me the murder weapon. It is obvious that the
"scarred" individual who performed this "Lie" was able to "take his time".
A stylized M was written in blood on the ground nearby. Investigation will
continue on this and I will inform you of any new findings as soon as they
    occure.

-Okay which one of you did it. If I had to decide, I'd say it was probably
Bafu Vai! :) (no hard feelings man, you just seem hte craziest :)

    2)
Damn htese jams are getting long!

    3)
I was re-reading some of my DT text files and found this...thought it was
funny. Taken from some IRC thing.
    ----------------
Q: Will "Change of Seasons" or "Eve" ever be released?

Mike P: "Eve" was recorded during the "Awake" sessions. It will be released
in Japan on the Japanese version. "To Live Forever" was also recorded. Both
will pop up as B-sides or as bonus tracks. As far as "A Change of
Seasons," it hasn't been recorded and there are no immediate plans to do
that. It haunts us and I would like to record it, but not yet. I'd love
to get it off our chests.
    ----------------

    4)
LISTEN TO IVANHOE!!!! These guys have got to open for DT!!!!
IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE
Check my DT page in a few days for a sample of them.

    5)
    >Seriously, next time someone suggests something like this, could all those
    >participents just mail the respons to that person, rather than all 1200 of >us?
    >I think it's interesting the first 50 or so posts, but after that, and the >6th
    >digest for that day, it's a little much.

He's talking about the damn top 5 threads and I agree. I skip through half
of every jam now due to them.

    6)
Do you guys arrow back and then hit end or backspace and re-type it all when
you mis-type something. I just realized that I backspace it. But I can
type fairly fast so I guess its okay.

    7)
Also along those lines...I think that it is soooo cool that all the computer
science majors or programmers use the "stab" technique to type. Not the
traditional "asdf" right hand, "jkl;" left hand crap.

    8)
I only personally know two jammers and that sucks! So...
    Hi Brandon!
    Hi Jay!

    9)
    >Am I the only rock musician left who
    >has never experimented with anything other than cigarettes and alcohol?

No I am clean as a whistle too and happy about it! I don't need any
substance. I have DT seriously. It is my drug abuse!

    I am rambling sorry!

Gallery, then I ordered the CD and found out that the cool band isn;t Shadow
    GAllery it is IVANHOE!!!!!!!!!!

These guys are soooo alike to DT its not funny. One of you could play me a
song of htem and tell me its a new DT and I would believe you!!!!

    The are incredible!!!!!!

    MUST HEAR THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will put a large or several smaller wav files from the one song I have
heard from them on myy web page in a couple of days (I'm real busy). So

Guys, I am really serious about htem. I have only heard one song, but it
has it all...odd time sigs, keys, full voice C's and D's (and in my
opionion, this singer is even a little better than James. That is saying a
lot coming from me!) guitar/keys dual solos.

In a few words...PROG AT IT'S FINEST!!! THE ONLY BAND IN THE WORLD (to my
knowledge) COMPARABLE AND UP TO DT's STANDARDS AND PLAYING EXCELLENCE!

IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE IVANHOE!!!

well so mr. hoon has left us. unfortunate. i was never a fan of theirs, so it
doesn't bother me too much (neither did the deaths of kurt or jerry)., but i
figure there are some people really messed up by this, so give them solace.

bafu vai- p.e. is one of the most incredible groups i've ever seen. first
off, having the guts to break the boundaries and say, "rap and metal don't
need to be cut off from each other." "bring the noise" was an amazing song
and it was the driving force behind a whole bunch of other guys (i.e., onyx
and biohazard). and their music. i don't always agree with their messages,
but i think they do their best to portray the problems in america (black and
white and otherwise) today. i haven't heard their new album (i have the bad
feeling it sucks) but "fear" and bits of "apocalypse 91" are fine for me. the
albums i listed were there because i feel that historically they will be very
    significant someday (i hope).

    songs that best portray me-
    bold as love- jimi
the forgotten, part 2- joe satriani
digging in the dirt- peter gabriel
    no excuses- alice in chains
    purple rain- prince

    so like, peace. david

All one needs to make one's life complete.

Let me begin by apologizing for the Blind Melon comment in my last post.
But I will also say that when Kurt Cobain died I couldn't have cared less,
because I was not a fan of his lifestyle, nor his music. Shannon Hoon
won't be receiving much more sympathy from me than Kurt did.

Huh? I'm a pre-socratic philosopher? The breadth of the sun is the length of a man's foot?

Wow. I'm going to assume that you're a relatively new member of the list. Because I'd sure like to open fire on you for making fun of someone's Death, so soon after showering someone else with flames on another topic you took seriously when they were joking. All I can do is hope that the people who sympathize with the passing of Shannon Hoon treat you exactly as you did me.

    ----

    > From: eiagm@eznet.net > Subject: Why?

    > Jammers, > It almost seems like people are trying to get other jammers to leave > the list with posts like the following. Why are we so quick to hate, to > anger, to misread jokes, etc?

We seem to be in quite a torrential period here. I think it has to do with the tension built-up from everyone waiting for Acoustic Dreams to arrive. We are all a bit on-edge. :) (Mike Bahr, don't jump on the bandwagon and take that seriously and begin flaming me like I'm on water or something.)

I agree with you, but I can't say why it's really happening. Personally I don't think I've ever seriously blasted anyone for anything on this list, so I can't give a personal opinion as to my sudden change in behavior because there has been none.

    > Here someone takes personally something completely harmless. > etc, etc. Hatred continues spewing........

I commented on that post as well. It was ytse, ytse spiteful.

    > Here, a joke seemed bad to one person, a certain person who likes to > post jokes of his own.

    >>p.s. "I'd like to hang out with John Petrucci, because he's not a >>heterosexual in my world." Even if I did feel this way, I wouldn't >>post it to a mailing list of 1200 people, because in my opinion that's a >>pretty fucking tasteless thing to say.

Can you remember, remember my name?

*I* am that certain person. Steve Borzilleri, Magellan, aka Bafu Vai. You can say my name. I thought that Melissa Etheridge comment was utterly disgusting. If anyone wishes to look up old posts to challenge me, they may, but none of my "jokes" have ever dealt with making fun of homosexuals, Shintoists, handicapped children, or ANYONE who lives in a manner different than my own. I may not agree with certain lifestyles, but you won't see me calling them "wrong."

You may also notice that word "fucking" that I used. That's one of the rare occasions I've used that word, because to me that comment was like a Beethoven fan calling a Green Day fan "wrong." No, it's not wrong, it's just something foreign to you. Yes, I think Melissa Etheridge is attractive, but I would never say something like, "She's not a lesbian in my world." I thought that comment was a disgusting thing to say, and I'm surprised that with all of the supporters of certain groups that seem to have sprung up recently on this list (HINT HINT) that I was the only one to say anything.

    > Do some people think they own the list? Would they like to see some of > us leave? Cause if so, you're doing a good job.

I apologize if you found that offensive. I suppose I'm not allowed to disagree or use profanity, because that was one of the only times I have ever responded to something with such ferocity. Sorry, sorry, sorry, it will never happen again. From now on I will be more silenzio.

Ok, listen. The last Jam really sickened me. I really don't think it matters whether we were fans of BM or not. (Personally, I own their first disc, and just listened to it again today. There's some really intersting stuff on there, if you're willing to open your ears.) Also, I really don't think that Chris Thorn's or Rogers Stevens' taste in music, or tactfulness in discussing it, matter anymore. A fellow musician has died. This is a tragic event. Shannon Hoon, whatever he did with his life, whatever values he espoused, whatever he decided to call art, is dead. Let us not mock his life. His friends and family are probably miserable right now. His bandmates are probably crushed.

It is ironic that some of us (yours truly not included) were discussing our dislike for their music, for their taste in music, and so on. It lends itself to some great humor material, to be honest. There exists, however, a fine line that should not be crossed. We already know that John Petrucci, the guitarist of the band whose name graces the title of our list, is above the sort of high-school humor that we have already seen produced among our ranks. I think John's restraint and grace should be an example for all of us. Quite frankly, some of what I saw in Jam #1066 is just plain tasteless and disgusting. The members of Dream Theater are above that sort of drivel. Shouldn't we be, also?

Even if you don't like BM's music, the fact remains that an artist has died. There is yet another hole in our craft, never to be refilled. Personally, I think that Shannon Hoon was stupid to abuse drugs. But he made some great music that will never be replaced.

A human being has died. He deserves dignity in his death, as do we all. It's time for us to act like adults, to mourn our loss graciously, and to move on. Those of you that have something obnoxious to say, please do not say it on the Ytse Jam. Each individual post reflects all of us and, ultimately, the members of Dream Theater. Please keep that in mind when posting about Shannon Hoon, Blind Melon, or anything else, for that matter.

    -Chris
