                    how is this CD????

Anyway, has anyone heard the newest Skid Row album "Subhuman Race"?
It's really good, and Sebastian has again renewed my notion that
he is one of the premier vocalists out there....his delivery fits
songs so well......if I could only sing like that.....:(

Someone also talked about the Superior CD - this Cd is
excellent. Everything about it, lyrics, musicianship, vocals, etc. is
phenomenal. It also is premium sound quality - very impressive for what
I think is an idependent venture.....if you can, try and get a copy - you
definitely won't be disappointed - very DT/Queensryche-ish.....Bernd, you
    are da man!!!!

                                                    later all,

In one of the *many* previous jams, Patricia mentioned The Tea Party as
one of her top 5 bands. COOL!! I also included them, but I seem to be the
only person on the jam who actually submitted my choices privately. ;)
Anyway, I really love this band, and I was wondering how many others out
there also do, or have at least heard of them? If you haven't, I strongly
recommend you give them a listen. The Tea Party consists of three members
who play about 30 different instruments altogether. This makes for a very
complex and unique sound. I must warn(?) you though: their music is
nothing like DT's. They probably wouldn't be considered prog, but then
again I don't even know the definition of prog anymore since I joined this
list. :) I kind of consider them to be alternative (WAIT DON'T GO YET!) in
the sense that you can't put a label on them. I don't consider bands like
Pearl Jam or Soundgarden to be alternative. The Tea Party's influences
include (among others) Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and North African music
(no, they don't really sound like Page & Plant. The exotic instruments
don't quite overpower the rock and sometimes blues sound). So if there's
anybody out there who likes/dislikes this band, let me know, we'll chat :)

    Hello Jammers,

I got my ticket for the Old Bridge show today after a bit of
persistance on my part. Fortunately the woman at Ticketmaster was really
cool about it (unlike a lot of the Ticketmaster employees I have delt
with in the past). She searched the computer and came up with nothing.
She asked me if the date I gave her was correct. I said Yes and told her
that someone I knew got tickets through this phone number. She had
another worker look on their "other system" and she found it. Apparently
they have 2 databases that aren't linked or the default doesn't have them
linked. This makes searches faster on the main system. Unfortunately if
you want an obscure concert you have to be persistant or you are out of
    luck.

    Later,

    Mike Backof

    IVANHOE!!!!!!!!!
I sampled alot of stuff from them from teh only song I have from them on my
DT web page. DOWNLOAD THEM ALL! I PROMISE YOU WILL LOVE THEM!

    2)
I just heard a Sears commercial and they said "We love a change of
seasons"!!!! They were talking about new fashions or something for the
    fall/winter. Cool huh?

    3)
    Good post Omar!

    4)
    >has anyone else seen the ACoS cover mini posters? they are about 10x10
    >inches or so and show the front and inside covers.

I have to have one of these. I make shirts out of all of the covers (which
I could do for all or any of you also) and when the print is larger already,
    it comes out much better.

    5)
Got another DT fan that makes about 10-12!

    Chad David writes:

    >>who sent that message to the jam, so I thought I would see
    >>what I could find out.

I did ya one better. Read on! :)

    >>I don't know how much everybody
    >>knows about him, but does this look accurate, or is it all
    >>an elaborate plot!

I presumed that it was a hoax, and moved from there. Considering
that there was a message that stated something to the effect that
JP wasn't connected and thought it was humorous that the rumor
existed, I figured that my presumption would be right on.

    >>The one thing that I noticed was the berkelee.edu does not
    >>seem to exist as a domain (no mx record that I could find),
    >>not that a small thing like that proves that this isn't him.

That's because the person who is masquerading as JP screwed up the entry.
He misspelled the name of the college/site. The music college's name is
spelled: Berklee College of Music. The site name is: berklee.edu.

He obviously confused the name with the University of California's campus:
UC Berkeley ( site name berkeley.edu). The extra 'e' between the 'k' and
the 'l' that was used was the first tip off. I sort of doubt JP would
misspell the name of his alma mater.

This doesn't mean that it wasn't JP, so I asked the postmaster@berklee.edu
    for a confirm. Here's what I got:

Now....either Jennifer Smith at Berklee is purposely lying to me, or
we've got a definite hoax on our hands. Can't blame me for hoping.

Anyone wanna prove me wrong? JP?

As has been stated previously, it's really easy to fake mail in any number
of ways. If you've got root access to your machine, you could even set
up a false account. Just for grins, I did a quick change on my name.
Should read 'John Myung' if I did it correctly. :)

    John...or is it Mathew? :)

After clearing up a horrendous mess with the disk that allows me to access my account and deleting about 30 Jams, all but the last 4, I'm back on track, and, as usual, I have things on which to comment!

Forgot who wrote this, but you know who you are...

    >Criss was killed almost instantly and his wife was critically injured and in a >coma, last I heard. I don't know her present condition.

Since I haven't read a Jam in 2 weeks, I'm assuming that the person to whom this message is directed posted about the anniversary of Criss' death. I heard about it the evening after it happened, and it was hell of a shock; Savatage was one of the first bands that got me into true metal. I used to communicate with the president of their fan club in Germany, Chris Greiner, fairly regularly back then, and from what she told me at the time, Dawn Oliva was in pretty bad shape. I don't remember the whole inventory of injuries anymore, but she was out of the hospital by around Christmas 1993. I haven't heard from Chris in over a year, though, so I have no idea how Dawn is doing currently. There have been a number of rumors about her, none of them pleasant; she's about as popular as Geoff Tate's ex-wife.

    >Tragic, needless. He was a talented kid ranking right up there with John >Petrucci.

Well, while Criss wasn't as flashy or as technically brilliant, he was a phenomenal guitarist all the same for the sheer power and emotion; "Gutter Ballet" never fails to knock me on my ass, even after almost six years of listening to it. I sorely wish I'd been able to see them live, but every time they were in Rochester, including the date they played there a month before Criss' death, I was underage and had no chance of getting in.

I'm going to completely avoid the subject of Shannon Hoon; it's been beaten to death as it is.

Lastly, I AM IN DESPERATE NEED OF STUFF FOR THE NEXT ISSUE OF METROPOLIS WATCH! Do you guys think I'm kidding when I request reviews of "A Change of Seasons" or the latest live shows or CDs of really awesome underground progressive metal bands? Or you all just apathetic? I don't want to have to skip another issue for lack of material! Will some of you puh-LEEZE take pity on me and send some contributions? This is your shot at having the band read your words, so what have you got to lose? If you're unsure of your writing skills (as if that ever stopped anyone on the Jam), hell, I'm an editor, that's why I'm here!

Please? Pretty please? Pretty please with whipped cream around it and a .. uh.... well, never mind. 'Tis up to you folks, it's not like I'm pointing a virtual AK-47 at your hard drive or anything.

I would like to agree with Erik's comment in digest 1077. While I am not completely au-fais with his work, from what i've heard, EriK had made a completely accurate assement of the man. Just take a look at the cover of Magnum Opus. Jim the funky beer monster.

I'm just in the process of getting over glandular fever (yucky yucky yucky virus, avoid kissing anyone you know who has it!!) and my recovery was boosted yesterday by the arrival of my Acoustic Dreams (#249, same as my Subconscious, nice one Mike!).

I've read about the quality and what's been said is correct-this is pretty much as good as I've ever heard (I don't like the vocals on Another Day, but that's just a subjective thing) and with the very good artwork/design and the cover it'd even pass as a fully "legitimate" release in a record store.

Oh yeah, the songs are cool also ;-)

I know there are some pretty experienced techies on this list, so if anyone can help out, please email me.

i just got a new 5 disc cd changer.. cheap one..admiral. but it has all the feautures i need. anyways, it appears to work fine, but as i am listening to awake, it sounds *slow*.

I am kind of used to hearing awake on a tape in the car (which i know tapes sound *faster* alot), but can a defect in the cd player cause this?

To the best of my knowledge, every other cd sounds fine in the thing.

    Thanks,

This may be completely extraneous information to many of you, and some of you may have figured this out long ago, but I thought it was kind of interesting.

The 1st half of the closing 3/4 passage in "The Crimson Sunset" contains a chord progression very similar to that of the end of Scarred. This particular progression is amazingly powerful and moving-B minor, Asus4, Gflat major w/ openB and E, (and here is where the similarity between the 2 songs ends) and finallyto Gmajor w/ open B and E.

I just thought this little tidbit was interesting.

Greetings, I think I may be the one responsible for starting the thread about Christian images in DT songs. Whether I did or not, I did make a comment about it some time ago requesting input, etc. There have been some interesting and varied responses to the issue, as I would suspect. My take on the situation at the present time: I think there definitely are Christian images in DT lyrics. To me that is not the question. "Blood heal me... belief will always save me," is just one example. I recently read in a jam that Mike P. even said that PMU sort of combined the stories of Hamlet and Christ. To me, the presence of such references is obvious. This does not imply in any way, however, that the band is Christian. Danzig (whom I do not listen to) uses Christian images, but I would say fall quite short of performing gigs on the Christian circuit (aside from the fact that they broke up). Someone commented that the use of Christian images, along with images from other literary works is quite commmon, in DT and elsewhere. I think this is probably the most likely and accurate explanation of the situation, IMO. Although as a Christian, I do not lump the Bible in with other forms of literature, I know that those who aren't religious still consider it a literary work. I continue to find it curious to see Christians dismiss things as non-Christian simply because it is depressing. Being a Christian isn't a picnic. This is not a criticism, just reality (as I see it). By the way, Chris DeGarmo smoked weed during the recording of Promised Land (so I heard from a close friend and Qryche freak-he wouldn't have told me this if he didn't believe it).

Whoever just sent me a copy of Subconscious: THANK YOU. I lost your e-mail address. I appreciate the effort you put into the cover art.

and some of you guys are bitching that you can't get in to see dt b/c you're under 18? check this out: they played a FREE GIG in july (i think it was) at the cpi in (i think) westhampton (did anyone go?? how was it?? i couldn't get in because i was under 21!!!! to make it worse (i know you girls will love this), it was 21 for guys and 19 for girls!!!! ahhhhhh!!!!!!! almost tempted to dress for the occasion (if you know what i mean). being 20 sucks. you're old enough to do stuff, but still too young to do others. god, i can't wait til 21 (and even better- it falls on a saturday next year!!)

someone please post directions to the roy rogers and wherever people are meeting before the ct gig. i just might show up, but without a ytsejam shirt, no one will know. oh well. maybe for the better.

i may consider selling my dt video of the japan show (1/24/95). if interested, i would love a trade for TDoE or some good offer. email me personally if interested.

dave silva- i have you cd, and i will mail it out thursday afternoon (had 2 huge tests this week, so haven't had time to send it off yet- expect it by monday. sorry for the delay).

re: modes in "awake." i hear a lot of mixolydian (i.e., "6:00" is a big example). however, the way they use chromaticisms, the way in which they stay away from the "pivotal tone" as i call it (the one that makes it a certaion mode or not), and the way they use both major and minor elements in their music (i.e., "voices") makes it quite hard to know for sure.

til next time. and i just found a spider going into my one of my speakers, and he just left me "caught in a web" (pardon pun). i mean, the back of my speaker is all webbed. oh well. see ya. david, the magical kobayashi

I love it! I can see how you would have those reactions to each work (although I didn't share any of them !>)>. Passing this on to my non 'jammer friends who have all of the above CDs.

    >> Malibu DT show

Wow. It looks as if *a lot* of people are goin to be there. I don't think we'll have much trouble hogging the front of the stage; I think the whole place will be packed with 'jammers. They should have a sign at the door that says: "If you aren't a 'ytsejammer' or a guest of one, all non-VIPs please move to the back of the club."

    >> Obsenity (waitaminute, didn't this thread die?)

All language is symbolic. One who says that the use of foul language is a non-issue isn't thinking well. Given the opportunity, I doubt one would greet the Pope with: "So, how the hell are ya' Popemeister! I think it's fuckin' great that came over here to visit us Yanks." Okay, so that's an absurd extreme, but one wouldn't let such language casually creep into such situations. Why? Because language is not only symbolic to the speaker, but also for the listener, and it is often symbolic in different ways. Like the over-use of adverbs in writing, bad language over-used demonstrates poor understanding of clear communication. If not this, so often, then it is used unnecessarily as a shock factor. In the end, language _can_ be harmful as are *ideas*.

Sorry if I'm burning a dead puppy with this issue...

John P. & his wife Rena don't have internet access! Mike Portnoy does not either, although maybe he set up the compuserve account to end the stupid Blind Melon thread...

Portnoy's wife told me that someone had posed as JP in the past on the jam and they all got a kick out of it!

It's highly doubtful that any of the members of DT (aside from Portnoy) even read the jam.......
