man, this is really getting messy......portnoy's post. but was it? or not?
again, very thoughtful message, yet as was mentioned by those who personally
talked to him, he has no access to a computer. or did he?
am i the only person who doesn't dig the japan 95 tape everyone's mentioning
(1/24/95- the payperview video, right?)? i thought james was off and his
voice sounded old at times. musically, they rocked. also, i think their set
wasn't as good as say, the one over the summer (how many people expected to
hear "uagm" at the beginning, then into "mirror" and "lie"?)

Hi all,
well, it looks like I'm going to manage to write a contribution that contains
mainly DT stuff and doesn't knock or flame anybody. Here goes:
The latest edition of the German magazine Metal Hammer contains an ad for a
music mail-order shop with the following DT guitar tab books:
Images and Words DM 50.60
Awake DM 53.60
Let me know if you want any more info (address, fax number etc). I think the
current exchange rate dollar/Deutschmark is somewhere around 1:1.44. This may
be old stuff for some of you, but I thought I'd let you know.
Made it! And I didn't even say fu..!
stay safe and happy listening (whatever it is your listening to)

Well, guys, I was just reading the last few ytsejams and I read John
Petrucci's post, then later saw Mike Portnoy's post. What I see is that they
(John P. and Mike P.) are apparently more willing to forgive and forget than
alot of you are! I am extremely impressed and pleased to see that they are not
Blind Melon bashing or yelling "Good Riddance!" like alot of you are. I think
that we all can learn a large lesson from those two. May Shannon Hoon rest in
peace.
A fellow ytsejammer,
Chris Crowder
P.S. to John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy: You guys are awesome and I have the
utmost respect for not only the two of you, but for the entire band. Rock on!

Dear jammers,
NOOOO!!!!!! John Petrucci does NOT have internet access. John and Rena
are computer illiterate, they have told me themselves. The closest that
John has ever come to the ytsejam is wearing the Ytsejam shirt. THAT's
IT!!!! No need to "investigate", alright? Okay, I got that off my

Dear jammers,
There' a VERY good chance that all of us Ytsejammers can get into the VIP
lounge/aftershow! I mean, if we line up in the front row with our
shirts, wouldn't that impress the band? Also, the guys are REALLY cool
about letting people into the VIP room. I was able to get all of my
friends in the VIP room the last time I went to the Malibu. So, maybe this
could be the post-concert Ytsejam party! Cool!

With all the recent "bandwidth waste" on non-DT subjects, and the bigger
waste of whingeing about it, I've decided to introduce a new service:
YTSE-FILTER!
Do you want:
o only *directly* DT-related info?
o everything _but_:
o talk of other bands?
o politics?
o top 5 lists?
o only posts of less than <x> lines?
o posts without sigs?
o what the heck, want _only_ Blind Melon info?
Then act now and subscribe now to Ytse-filter!
For the low, low introductory price of US$10/month, I will personally
filter to your tastes. A personalized weekly Ytsejam will be sent direct to
your e-mail box in an unassuming brown paper wrapper. Just e-mail me at
pgor@netcom.com for more info, such as where to send the dough.
(sorry, spelling/grammar correction and line-wrap fixing are an add'l $40/month)
If you don't think it's worth $10/month to find out about one-off shows and
new releases before the ticket vendors and record store drones, you'll just
have to wade through the posts yourself in the free version.
pg
hell, I'm wading through these posts without complaint, why not get paid
for it?

In a recent ytsejam, Ben Laussade spake thus:
>>has everyone noticed that Portnoy uses this same interesting fill
>>twice during ACOS.. Being a total idiot when it comes to musical theory,
>>I can't describe it intelligently. The kick drum sort of carries the
>>fill, but a cymbal and the snare are used as well.
>Well, THAT narrows it down. Mike Portnoy NEVER does fills with the snare,
>kick and cybmbal :) If you give me a time, I'll tell you what he's doing
>there. If you're interested, that is.
Hey, cut it with the sarcasm! *ouch*
As I said, I didn't figure out a smart way to describe it.. And I would've
given you the times but I was too lazy to take my brand new Life of Agony
album ("Ugly") out of the CD player and replace it with ACOS.. (yes, yes,
I have to admit it, I have been listening to other CDs as well. Crucify me.)
And now, the times..
first at 13:20 or thereabouts
then, again, at 15:57 he goes ahead and repeats the damn thing
..oh come let us adore him....
Aww shites, I can't find any more of that fill.. I thought it
was there one more time, played faster. I feel my point is ruined.
I feel like aborting this message.. But that I won't do, since
this message has nothing to do with a certain band with the initials
BM and I'm a tad proud of that fact. :-)
Now that I'm at it (blabbering away about the details of Portnoy's
playing) I might also say, that the cymbal sound at the end of ACOS
(20:15-20:36) gets on my nerves, but on the other hand the cymbal sound
at the end of Scarred (you all know what I mean) is just simply divine.
And by the way, I think Mike's drum track is one of the things that
actually improved in the newer ACOS version.. I liked the older one
better in many ways (speed, both "don't go"'s, and a few other things
like the early climax after The Inevitable Summer).
Ok, back to the fill.. you promised to tell me what he's doing there.
Please do. I expect a two-page analysis complete with an appendix
about historical background and a bibliography (you can ask Ken about
that part.. he's good at it :))
I'm off my soapbox. I guess I ought to be sorry for the unnecessary
length of this message. But considering what the list has been like
lately, I'm not.

And I would like to re-emphasize that biological proof of sexual differentiation of the brain does not mean that one sex must be better than the other--it just means that there are differences.
Just about any book on Developmental Neuroanatomy should discuss this topic, for anyone interested. Kandel and Schwarz is one of the more famous overviews and includes a "Related Reading" section for each topic, which is why I recommend it as a first place to look.
For a discussion of the topic that is oriented towards the layperson (and not people in neuro fields) I suggest Patricia Churchland's landmark "Neurophilosophy". She had some amusing comments on sexual differentiation :)

I just played part of the AWAKE cd for my music professor here at college. He was pretty impressed by the complexity and talent of the music.
He is very interested in the use of different modes of musical scales as applied to current music.
Does anybody know what kind of modes Dream Theater uses in their songs. I have to believe they use something more than the standard scales.
Any help would be appreciated. Along with specific examples. My ear isn't very good for hearing those things.
Especially from you guitar players out there.

I'm thankfully going to be 18 for the show coming in December to the Malibu Bach Club. But I'm sure there are many other people out there who aren't 18 yet. I find it totally wrong that true Dream Theater fans get denied from attending Dream Theater concerts because of their age. You guys did it to me in the Spring and I find it totally wrong. I think someone should reconsider the age to go to the concert. Why aren't minors allowed in there any way? I think this policy is wrong! YOu guys can lose fans instead of gaining them by this policy.

In response to Michael Coghlan's post (sorry if I spelled that wrong):
I'm not sure if I follow your thinking in regards to considering Take the Time a "new age thinking" song. You wrote that Christians look towards God/Jesus to find a greater strength, as opposed to the "find all you need in your mind" idea. Somehow, it seems to me that one could translate this song to fit both ideas. TTT could be interpreted as carrying a message of finding all that you need to discover God/Jesus/Divinity/whatever within yourself, rather than relying one others for spiritual enlightenment. That is, divinity can (and perhaps must) be discovered from within, as opposed to being a product of taught beliefs. Am I making sense here? I too find many Christian hints in DT lyrics (sex is death, death is sex, says it right here on my Crucifix, Judas on the ceiling, the devil in my bed, i guess Easter's never coming, with wings up in heaven, ect) I can think of many more. I've never considered any of these instances to be ANTI Christian, rather they seemed more to be questioning/considering the ideas of that faith. I think it would be easy to embrace both the philosophies that DT portray and the ideas of Christianity at the same time. This seems like an interesting thread (intelligent too, imagine that!). I hope it continues. Hopefully no one is going to become offended by a discussion involving religious themes within DT lyrics. It's not like anything that could be said would be that threatening to anyone's personal faith anyway. Regardless... Now that we've ended the BM posts, we need to end the "end the BM posts" posts. :)
MIKE Bahr.... what's going on, man? I hear all these great reviews of AD, I read there's some copies left... but everytime I e-mail you I never get a response... What's the deal? I'd like to order a copy, but I don't seem to be reaching you... HARUMPH.
finally... I recently posted about dt and drugs, the message that read something like "bm and the incident with Steve Morse." This was an error! I meant to type Steve Walsh, I don't know, the Kansas connection got me mixed up. Again, this was a mistake. There was no Morse drug incident... Sorry about any confusion there... BTW, buy Bring 'em Back Alive. You won't regret it.

I think we have all read about the posts about Cassandra being a seeress in ancient Troy. I just thought I might point out a book by Christa Wolf, an East- German author, called-- you guessed it--- "Cassandra." It is a sort of revisionist tilt on the Trojan War and is told, apparently, from the viewpoint of Cassandra, as the seeress daughter of Priam. Obviously, it is only so accurate, as it was written in the 20th century (1980's). Just another reference to Cassandra for all ye who are interested.
I would also have to agree that Dream Theater are not a Christian band. I understand that they _might_ be Christians, but there really is nothing in their lyrics to suggest so. As has been pointed out, Christianity is not a semi- condition: you either believe and feel it or you dont. And specific songs that dont apply or are specfically not Christian can be found within the entire albums. As to their personal convictions, it's impossible to say. But "close your eyes, you'll find all you need in your mind" has been much quoted in relation to Christianity, and for good reason. That is not a Christian viewpoint.
Interesting anecdote. I was talking to my mother, who was born and raised in Ireland, and we were talking about Dublin. She said that is was "a den of inequity." She knows nothing of ACOS and I asked her where that came from. Apparently, the rural people of Ireland dislike the corruption of Dublin-- you know, the typical complaints of city violence, prostitution, and theft. Since so many of Ireland's phrases come from Biblical references (Catholicism being still pervasive there in 99% of the people), I was wondering if that is anywhere in the Bible. Anyone? I was thinking about Babel, or some other licentious city. Sodom and Gomorrah (spelling?)? Although "inequity" seems more to be a function of the haves and have- nots than baltant sinfulness. Oh well.... I was driving when my mother said that, I just about missed my left hand turn home, a drive I have made a thousand times in my life, because of shock in that phrase. So "inequity" may not be a word in Webster's, but it sure is a colloquial expressionm, at least in Ireland. My mom was surprised I had never heard the phrase "den of inequity." :)
One last stab in my post: obscenity. Truthfully, the only reason we still find words offensive is because people are apalled or disgusted. If everyone thought nothing of the "4- letter" words, then we certainly wouldnt find them offensive. If people didnt make such a big deal about them, they would be considered "normal." I always find it interseting to see what words are considered most disdainful in various societies. America, in general, is simply a lot less comfortable with sexuality than many other cultures (and I wouldnt say ALL)-- hence the disdain for the word f***. In Spanish, the most vulgar expressions are those concerning religion; in Spain to say "Jesus Christ" is the most horrendous of swears, while the literal translation of f*** is heard on sitcoms similar to the Cosby Show or other wholesome TV shows. Whereas in America, you hear the blasphemous "Goddamn" on our sitcoms, but any reference to f*** is carefully and playfully skirted about. Indeed, we find sex almost beguilingly humorous, in order to hide discomfort. The laughter is almost nervous and infantile: all statements or jokes are funnier with the tag "in bed" on the end of them. I guess I'm getting on a tangent here. Obscene words often are able to express more emotion, but often simply because they are so taboo. If something really awful happens, the constrictions of society wear thin and harsh and sometimes awful words and comments effuse from our lips. This is human nature. If soceity didnt view such behaviour as freakish, then the words would not be seen as unseemly. Oh well-- this post is already far too long.

My initial reactions on hearing each album for the first time: 1. IAW: so why do i have this? 2. Awake: this is nowhere near as good as IAW 3. WDADU: this is just pathetic 4. LatM: what the hell is James doing? 5. Subconscious: so what's the big deal? 6. ACos: i cant believe they ruined the song 7. AD: i dont think i'll actually listen to it that much, but it completes the collection.
So this obviously means it kicks ass. I don't know what it is, but the less impressed i am with dt the first time i hear it, the more i will eventually like it. kinda weird.
i was reading the faq recently, and it reminded me that all the guys in the band wrote one verse for TtT, and then did the chorus together. Does anyone know who did what? 3 and 6 are the choruses, 1 seems to be mike's, 2 JP's, 4 and 5 kevin's, and the last little bit, JM's. i would think james didn't write anything because the song was already written when he did his demos.
has anyone else seen the ACoS cover mini posters? they are about 10x10 inches or so and show the front and inside covers. i picked one up, but gave it to mike b. hopefully i can get some more because they are pretty cool.
i was going to start another thread, but it just doesn't seem to be the right time for the one i was going to start...
