I'm not interested in it either and I don't read them. But other

Everyone please stop talking about DT and making fun of other
    people!!! The y'jam doesn't need free-thinking!! It's too creative
and dangerous. Next thing you know, people will start making up
their own minds and having their own opinions. This will just lead
to chaos and lots of posts about how people feel about DT.

This isn't a direct nin/DT comparison, BUT I will pull on this thread:lyrics
    v. music. I think 6-7 months ago there was talk about what we listened for in
a band. I think the words (or the message) is very important to the song, but
the music is what delivers the message. I would guess most would listen to a
band with"good" music though the lyrics were terrible. But switch that around,
and you'd lose poeple. My point is if the music sucked and the lyrics were
what drew you, why not just read the liner notes as if it were poetry? Being
an aural art, music seemingly takes priority over the words. I'm not into nin
at all, especially Trent's voice. The voice is a musical instrument, so the
singing is hard to ignore. How many bands really have different basic
messages? I like alot of the lyrical imagery DT uses, but the vehicle of their
music writing is what draws me to them. Bob Dylan wrote cool lyrics, but
musically he was average at best with inept singing skills.

So yes, the nin/DT comparison DOES fuel legitimate debate, but not along the
lines of "who's better." It is more about what the message is and how they get
it across. And debate doesn't mean there's a winner, just a conflict of
viewpoints. Seeing as how I kid friends who like nin (mainly because of
"Closer"), I think it's a healthy debate. After all, haven't we seen this list
rip on the alternative crowd? nin seems to be one of the biggest benefactors
of the "wave. " If you think you had reason to bash the genre, bring the
noise. "god, I hate that popular stuff while DT goes unrecognized." This is a
prime chance to explain why you keep saying that. DON'T SURPRESS THE
    DISCUSSION!!!! It IS DT related!LATER-

    Steve

BTW, I like the lyrical comparison going on. I never could understand Trent so
it's good to see the actual words. :)

I finally got my copy of AD and I just want to say that it is amazing.
It's easily the highest quality boot I've ever heard. I really like Wait
for Sleep. They did a wonderfull job without keys. I love Bruce
Dickenson (and I highly recommend his new solo cd Balls to Picasso). The
new mixes of 6:00 and CiaW are interesting, too. I can hear the keys
better and it seems brighter. Big thanks to Mr. Bahr for doing such a
    wonderfull job.

Check it out if you can find it. Later...

    Hey guys!

I know this is a REAL long-shot, but I'm interested in getting my hands on a copy of Mike Bahr's masterful Subconcious CD. No, not a copy like a dub, but the CD. Yes, I know these are sold out, but if there is anyone out there who has an extra copy they would like to get rid of, PLEASE e-mail me personally to discuss this. I *really* want this CD in my collecton. I listened to the entire NIN Downward Spiral for the first time last night and I must say, this never-ending NIN/DT thread IS like "comparing apples to goats," as one ytsejammer pointed out earlier. NIN is *very* well done stuff, but I'd much rather see a huge thread comparing the styles of DT/Yes or Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart. Just my 2 cents. Don't flame me or anything. Meeting place for the El 'n Gee get-together?? Later guys!

i was wondering if there is or can be a connection made between the interpretations of mr. omar khan in "voices" (the religion discussion) and mr. mike bahr's (i'm getting antsy about ad, btw) interpretation of "silent man" (scheherazade). i have a hunch that something somehow can be linked together from the 2, but have no clue as to what they can be. any ideas would be very good, and can add some further fire to the debates about the meanings of dt's lyrics and may help us decide if "awake" is a concept album. i personally think it is, based on what i have read (will whoever has been woking on this please forward me the past jams where you have stated your "theorems?" thanks). whatever, but nonetheless, i thank you all.

I'm talking about signature song here, folks. When the run-of-the-mill music fan thinks of Zep, the first song that ususally comes to mind is Stairway to Heaven (of course, we on the jam immediately think of Rover/Achilles/SRtS)....Unfortunately, perhaps, there is no song that would identify DT to the Mass Public like Stairway for Zeppelin, (PMU comes the closest) so the question of the day is: What one song do you think represents DT best? Personal choice here is Metropolis, pt 1, for its multiple individual solo sections--showing the technical abilities of more than just the guitarist (Long live Kevin Moore!), unlike most run-of-the-mill bands, and the lyrics which require some pondering and the help of about 1000 friends to figure out. Plus, it comes in around 10 minutes, about the best length for DT songs (LTL, erotomania, voices, SCARRED, all go around the 9-11 minute mark....) Second choice: ACOS--too long for the #1 song....IMO of course

I've been SOOO busy, and now there are 46 unread Jams in the INbox! Anything interesting happen lately? (sorry, Steve Z, I couldn't resist...see my defining song D) below, and it'll tell you why I HAD to include the above

Adding on to an old thread here....... Seeing as how I'm the type that misuses my abilities, a pair of songs titled "Take the Time" fit me well...of course, there's A) the DT version, and also B) a version by the group "The Freddy Jones Band" <Hey, Minhaz, there's another one for your same name song list> Two other songs do me justice, both by extreme C) Am I ever Gonna Change D) Cynical Fuck, which contains this priceless lyric "If you can't take it with you, then what's the use? "I never saw a U-haul being pulled by a hearse"

A question about Extreme, if I may: Can anyone explain how they went from religious seeming lyrics (please tell me god isn't dead) on 3 Sides, to "There is no God" and "Evilangelist" on WftP?

ANd finally, a recommendation, the aforementioned Freddy Jones Band If you can tolerate a bit of Country Music, there are song great songs among the hillbilly (which I like at times) on the album "Waiting for the NIght"......Highlights include "In a Daydream" which got some rock radio airplay (where i first picked up on the band) and the song "Take the Time" which i mentioned above Apologies on the length Partha "Cynical Fuck" Mukhopadhyay

something else i wanted to mention: i've heard a lot of buzz about the acos guitar tab project, and there's books to "i/w" and "awake", and i was wondering what i could do for keyboard scores? the transcription of the keyboard intro to 6:00 is not so very accurate. yes, i know john petrucci had a hand in writing out stuff, but i did hear someone mention that he wasn't even sure how to play that himself (came from someone who saw him at a recent clinic, i believe). well, i think it would be very good if we could get something going for key scores. i would like to start by saying that i have a score i transcribed peronally of "wait for sleep." it took me 6 hours to sit and listen to it, and i relaized that it's written a bit differently than in the i/w book. if anyone's interested in it, once i get it put on my computer, i can send it to someone to check out. but i hope we can get more key guys to take up this project. that would be good. thanks again. david, the magical kobayashi

Andy, Do you know what it means to be 'sarcastic'?

And BTW, the NIN/DT topic is DAMN interesting to many of us. If a few of you do not find it interesting, that is fine, but why do you feel the need to tell everyone else what to discuss? It has DT content (uh, it's like, about nin AND DT, dude?), its interesting, people aren't flaming each other (if you don't count the people outside of the discussion trying to end it), and people actually have intelligent things to say about it. If you would prefer to talk about something else, start your own thread!

Those of you who have tickets to the DT show in CT, can someone tell me how to get tickets? I remember someone posting the address (or something) awhile back, but it got lost in the shuffle.

I'd be *really* upset if I had to miss this. Thanx in advance for any help. Also, if anyone has directions to the club from out of state...

    So I'm clueless.....sue me. :)

I was just up in Chandler to visit some friends so I stopped by Mike's place. He is a really cool guy. He even let my friend look through his MTG cards (my experience is that you shouldn't really trust "perfect strangers" looking through your deck without keeping a hawk eye on the perpretator)! His place was stacked with all sorts of cool DT and hi-fi stuff...very impressive. Anyway, I got my AD up there and it is fantastic! Made me cry!! It was better than CATS :) It was #316 &317 and he was just about to ship them that day, so all of you around 300 should be getting yours soon. I still feel stupid about that damn number puzzle...I remember seeing it before but I forgot it.

I agree with Lars on this...

Keep all the alternative shit off this list, but perhaps delve into progressive stuff more, and how it compares to DT. Ie. Kansas, Yes, etc...

Let's get back to the heart of the matter...more DT please.

    Hello again all...

    Time for a list.

    1. Now that I'm actually Out of Acoustic Dreams Cds, I totally authorize any and all non-profit copying of the contents to fans who didn't have a chance to get the CD. All I ask is that you not come to *me* for a cassette or DAT copy as I am hard at work on WDATU and Antiquities. :) Trey Allen has a good thing going with his Subconscious dub sites... my hedge bet is that half of them or more can do Acoustic Dreams as well.

    2. There will be another list of orders and update and everything posted soon... tonight if I _can_, tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest. Sorry about the delays... mid terms ya know.

    3. Someone said the production on Acoustic Dreams is better than on WDADU??! Thanks! That's a mega compliment... after all, a real producer in a real studio did WDADU, and I just winged it with my rig here.

    4. Why the last two songs on Acoustic Dreams (Voices and Bad) are not listed on the label. The quality of the last two isn't so hot, so I decided not to put them on the label so that you wouldn't think "aw gee, I paid for THESE?" and to effectively denote them "Bonus Tracks". They were really just afterthoughts that I put on there because they weren't going to fit in with any of my near-future CD themes, and I thought you'd all get a kick out of them.

    5. Someone e-mailed me about a special thing that happened in their life with Acoustic Dreams, where a friend got it as soon as she recovered from a big-time illness. It was really special to hear about it and I'm always interested in things that happen to people where Dream Theater, my discs, or just prog rock in general are concerned. Some of us have been on this list for a couple years now (has it been that long??) and we know each other as well as if we lived down the block. That's a sense of community I don't see much of here on the big bad net. So if something COOL is happening in your life and you can link it to Dream Theater somehow, post it to the Jam! I'm sure everyone will appreciate hearing about it. After all, it isn't a poll, a post about BM or NIN, a flame, a complaint about the number of Jams, or another goddamn long-ass list from _me_. :)

    6. There is no number six.

    7. So far reservations for WDATU are steadily accumulating. I am sure this CD will be a particularly successful effort. I hope the sound is up to par... I've had it specially remastered this time (unlike AD, which was already good) from the soundboard originals, and a scant few audience tapes.

    8. Point of interest. Mike Portnoy mentioned to me that they have only played Light Fuse and Get Away live TWICE with James as singer! Lucky us we found one of those. He wasn't kidding when he told me way back when that I'd have some searching to do. :)

    9. Halloween is coming. For mood music, I recommend Rush's "The Necromancer", "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", and "La Villa Strangiato". Also Dokken's "Into The Fire", "Dream Warriors", and "Mr. Scary"; Type O Negative's entire catalogue; finally by our very own DT, "A Change of Seasons". (tell me does anything else _really_ fit by DT?)

    10. Remember to write to mtvmail@aol.com tomorrow asking for Anybody Listening! It JUST MIGHT WORK. And if it dosen't... well, all you did was write an e-mail. How tough could it be?

    Take it ez...

I've recently discovered that it would be financially possible for me to attend the December 29th show at Birch Hill, in Old Bridge, NJ.

A non Ytsejammer friend of mine might be interested in going as well. The key word is "might." If he can't go, I would need to find someone else to help split the cost.

I have a very comfortable, fuel-efficient vehicle at my disposal. I also have a place to stay at negligible cost.

If you're interested, PLEASE e-mail me directly at:ekim01@fiu.edu.

Don't let your fellow Ytsejammers down!

Hey, sorry to add to some of the clutter, but on the last jam, there was a dude who had just gotten Wake Up, and he was interested in trading. I sent you a message, bu tI got the address wrong and it was returned to me, and I don't have you're address. Mine is bjgateno@students.wisc.edu But while I'm here, the only boot I have is Dream Out Loud, so if anyone doesn't have that one, has something else from DT, and is willing to trade, send me a message. Wow. It seems that while I was away, this list turned into a philosophy course. Cool! Really, I love the way we can take the lyrics and such of a band like DT (we're not the only list that has these discussions either. Some pretty deep threads have been going on on the U2 and King's X lists as well) and dig deep into the lyrics, beliefs, etc. and discuss what they mean and such. I find it fascinating. Keep it up, though don't get off the track (you know, as long as it pertains to DT in some way). Later. God bless.

    Greetings Ytsejammers,

Tomorrow (Halloween) is the big day for Operation: Revolution. To all of those who have been helping out with our efforts, thank you. Everyone else, please do your part to make this thing work and write MTV e-mail tomorrow... also call-in to the Most Wanted show tomorrow. The full details of Operation Revolution are below:

    Thanks to all, Ed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ************************************************************************** --------------------------------------------------------------------------

OPERATION: REVOLUTION --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Give eMpTyV a piece of your mind!!

OPERATION: REVOLUTION is an e-mail campaign to let MTV know what we think!!

On Halloween Day (October 31, of course) we're joining together to protest the programming policies of MTV. Some of our beef includes:

    - not enough ROCK videos (more generally--not enough of a genre mix) - too many gameshows - Cancellation of "HEADBANGERS BALL" - not enough ROCK videos

Let's e-mail our beef to MTV!!! Tell them what you'd like to see. Tell them what you don't like to see. Tell them why you channel-surf past MTV. Tell them why you watch MTV. But remember these things:

    1) OPERATION: REVOLUTION is huge, and we must keep things legit to be taken seriously. Only one letter per person, please.

    2) Profane, vulgar, or derogatory letters will only hurt our cause. We should keep our letters clean & specific.

On HALLOWEEN DAY, please join the rest of us and send your letters & requests for the return of Headbanger's Ball and/or ROCK videos to:

    mtvmail@aol.com -or- feedback@mtv.com -or- mtvnews@mtv.com

Please send letters to only one of these addresses. (Refer to #1 above.)

The overall volume of mail is important. SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR FRIENDS. If you can, get them to write in, too.

*** REMEMBER: Halloween is THE day for OPERATION: REVOLUTION ***

Let's make a real statement with this mailing campaign.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at hvaishn@emory.edu ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** The following is the calendar of planned events for OPERATION: REVOLUTION. I will eventually post this (on r.m.a.q) so we can follow along and add our support wherever and whenever necessary.

Old news: Once things get launched, a certain energy level MUST be maintained to give us a chance at success. Interest must be maintained. Don't let threads die. Keep up the HYPE! Pour your own energy into keeping a widespread, positive interest in having folks get on the bandwagon for O:R.

The goal is to get O:R to be news on the street, not just news on the net.

The more letters that MTV gets, the better!

    * (10/26 or 10/27) and 10/30 - last reminder to newsgroups. ****reminder of everything (e-mail, "Most Wanted," recruitment of other people, radio involvement... Everything!)

    * 10/31 - initiate coverage of AOL, Prodigy, & Compuserve groups. Absolutely last reminder to groups, if necessary. ****Spill my guts to MTV!

And hopefull all will go well. So lemme know what you think. If you would like to see copies of what I plan to use for each of the releases, please let me know. If you have any questions or confusion, please contact me right away.

    MICK

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

IN ADDITION to writing in on Halloween Day, OPERATION: REVOLUTION has grown to include a plan to bombard MTV's "Most Wanted" show with a radical request.

To signify the group where this benevolent movement started, (and for simplicity's sake), we have decided to call in to MTV en-masse and request one song: Queensryche's "Anybody Listening?"

This song was selected to send a message to eMpTyV. This song was selected because it isn't too new (and trendy), isn't too old (and overplayed), and it has a specific message. And again, in requesting this song, we honor the newsgroup where this grand movement started.

** When to do it? Call in on Halloween Day, starting around 6PM. ** *** the PHONE NUMBER: 1-800-DIAL-MTV *** ** The song to request: Queensryche's "Anybody Listening?" **

This call-in is NOT a replacement for the originally planned write-in. It IS a significant part of a one-two-punch combination.

**** Remember to write in on Halloween day!!! We WILL make a difference!
