television over there. It starts out with the band in the dressing room
receiving their platinum albums. A Japanese woman is interviewing them (and
they all act like "What the fuck is she saying?"). All it says is Dream
Theater: Tokyo, Japan 1995. The set list is as follows:

Once again on the issue of duality. It appears as though, I said
"duality" when I really meant to say "dualism." (you learn somethin' new
every day). Dualism: (in a vague sense) the belief that good and evil are
two equal forces. This is what I do not believe in. I hope this clears
up my point, rather than clogging it.
Another interesting comment was made in a jam in regards to my
comments. It was in response to Ken's comment that I contradicted myself.
It was stated that duality is an integral part of Western philosophy:
there cannot be good w/o evil. Good can only be distinguished as good in
respect to evil. This is a philosophy predominant in Western culture.
Once again, I'm not trying to make converts over this list, I'm
simply stating my views. The atheists and others do not hesitate to state
theirs and I do not intend to do so regarding mine.
Western philosophy, though influenced by Christianity in various
ways is NOT Christian. Nor is Western philosophy something I subscribe
to. My beliefs may coincide to some degree with it. Obviously, I am a
WEsterner and I have undoubtedly picked up on some of the ideas.
However, I do not believe good can only be seen in relation to
evil. I think there is a state of being in which good is seen only in its
own light. There is no knowledge of evil in this state and that recreates
in the individual something that is rarely seen: innocence.
I could go on, and might at a later time, but I must go now.

Evening folks,
Although I'm not really a 10,000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant fan, I went
to Natalie's concert with my girlfriend last night here in Chicago at the
Rosemont Theatre and was VERY pleasantly surprised by what I saw/heard.
The music was not only much more guitar-oriented (with several extended
jams) but, in addition to her enthusiatic stage presence, she was
supported by a female guitarist (same as from her album, Jennifer Turner)
who was VERY VERY good. I know that we are all aware of exactly how few
females (for whatever reason) can be found in the position of doing lead
guitar in ANY band, so that, by itself was a very nice change. BUT, to
add to this, she handled things VERY well, going from rhythm guitar,
to very nice blues leads, to trading vocal leads with Natalie and the
vocalist from the supporting act (Innocence Mission), to
acoustic/classical style, to spotlighted LENGTHY heavy-rock solos, to
nicely understated backing vocals. Now I know that this is all VERY
Non-DT-related, but I couldnt help but think, as I sat there "Now THIS is
the kind of thing that should be pointed out as an example of the kind of
contribution that ALL female guitar players SHOULD be allowed to make,
given the chance"
In the end, my suggestion is to go and see Natalie and take this
opportunity to see "how it should be done"!

WHOA I've been gone for a long weekend and LOOKIT all of the 'jams which
have been kept toasty warm in my mailbox for my perusal.
I remember reading about the Lie single released in the UK and that
various jammers thought it was pretty swell. Of course, I can't remember
what you guys said the other tracks on the single were. A couple of my
relatives are going to Britain this December and if this single has nifty

Hey, I was there! It was my very first DT show and it was incredible to
say the least. The James Young Band (JY from Styx) opened up and played
a couple of old Styx tunes and some stuff of their own. Then DT came on
totally blew my mind! For the opening song, 6:00, the James' microphone
was tuned too low and you couldn't hear him too well, but after that they
got their act together.
Did anyone else go to this show? I had my YtseJam shirt on and was
frantically searching for others to say hi to, but none were found. I did
have someone on this list stop me on the way out but couldn't chat for
too long.
I've been wanting to post this for a while, but my darn procrastination
habits got the best of me again. :-)
And I understand the anger of the under-21 folks out there. While I was
waiting in line at the CPI show, I saw a couple of guys who drove all the
way out from Pennsylvania or Maryland to see the show and were denied
entry. They were pissed!

I'm always interested Kyle, in talking about Christianity. I'm glad to
know you are presenting it on this list and think it's appropriate when
it comes to defining what is aligned with biblical concepts and what is
not regarding DT's lyrics. I found there are a number of Christians on
this list which is nice to know as well. Quite a few non-Christians
see us as passive, holier-than-thou, in the dark, close minded and
idealistic. I've met some like that anyway. But I think most of us
are far from close-minded. As a matter of fact in a lot of Christian
circles I/we would be warned about listening to DT or any other secular
bands for that matter. So I will conclude by saying that those of you
who do hear us give commentary from time to time with a Christian
perspective that for the most part are open-minded, though I realize
this is somewhat subjective. Oh and by the way I agree w/Kyle God is
stronger than Satan and good will triumph over evil. You'll see....

I've noticed a couple posts regarding the work of Ann Raynd (sp?)
That's interesting. I am definitely going to have to check out some of
her writings. That now makes two of my favorite bands who are in some way
connected.
The other, if you haven't already figured it out, is echolyn. The
first track on their first album, Fountainhead, is a reference to a work
of hers. If I recall correctly from their FAQ, there are also references
to her work in other songs of theirs.
Yes, I'm definitely going to have to check her out. In fact,
maybe I'll drop by the library after I'm done here.

The book is called 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.' Don't let

Well, I have to admit, I'm somewhat surprised by all the responses to my
post about nin and DT. I figure it has galled a few people who think that
the topic doesn't merit that much discussion. The thing is though, that
it does.
Someone said something to the effect of here we go again. I don't
know what he was talking about; guess I haven't been here long
enough. But, I can't understand what's wrong with really saying
something; and I can honestly say, withouth a hint of insincerity, that
some of those replies really said something. Isn't that what a good
measure of Dream Theater's stuff is about? Think of "A Fortune in Lies."
I can just imagine a couple of people going through the "unity of [their]
five day sessions, wasting all of what they could become in some ad agency.
Isn't that what this is all about? When you have such a phenominal technology
at your fingertips, why waste it?

I was going to reply to the NIN post, but everything I wanted to
say has already been said. I guess that's what happens when you don't
read your e-mail for three days. But I would like to say that I'm glad
that people are posting that kind of stuff. It stirs up the shit-storm
and makes people think. That's the kind of stuff I like and that's the
kind of stuff I'd like to see more of on the Jam. Not that I want this
turn into a forum for comparing and contrasting every band on the planet
vs. DT. Speaking of which, I will soon be posting a fairly in-depth
analysis of "Surrounded" once I submit my final draft for my English class.
Now, to the point of this post. To the person who mentioned Heavy
Bones: Yes, I've heard of them. I have their album and they were featured
in Metal Edge several years ago. I even went to a show of theirs at
the Troubador in LA. It was pretty good. The singer dangled from the
scaffolding and the drummer was pretty good live. They had some pretty good
songs. Nothing too original, typical late 80s/ early 90s hard rock (this
coming from the ultimate fan of the genre). If you want better
suggestions of who to check out in the genre of 80s/90s melodic hard

Speaking of which, I forgot to thank Bafu Vai for supporting my
choices in the now defunct favorite musicians rankings. Glad to see
another fan of my kind of music around (there don't seem to be that many
left). Too bad you don't play an instrument (do you?) and live in LA (do
you?) or else we could get together and bring that kind of music back to
the status it deserves. Oh well. Just another random thought.

A lot of Christians think they have to "feel good" all the time. I
know this is a lie, but a lot of people really believe that lie.
That's why, when they listen to DT and they get depressed, they
automatically think DT is no good.

Hi there,
I'm quite new on the net and i've actually just recieved my first Ytsejam Digest. It was pretty
interesting. Especially the article on the lyrics of Voices by Khan was great.

What I would like to know is if there is anyone out here on the Net who knows where I can find
some TABulature for guitar or bass of Dream Theater songs. I'm especially looking for stuff on
Voices and Change of Seasons.

could help me out. By the way, I've already got the bass-lines on Lie, Erotomania, most of the

Has anyone heard Shadow Gallery? There last album 'Carved In Stone' really
starts where the last Dream Theater stops. Long epic songs and great
musicianship and no singer trying to sound as a metal singer.
Just letting you all know there's more than Dream Theater. Dream Theater is
great, but not the only one.

O.k, I was listening to ACoS the other day, In particular 'Love Lies
Bleeding', the Elton John Cover. "What was that?" I thought and rewound
the CD a bit ant played it again. And Again. And Again. And there was a
very odd sounding chord there.
It's about 7:37 minutes into the song where James Sings "I was
playing rock and Roll, You Were just a fan, so... " The odd note occurred
on 'a fan.' Can anyone verify this?
It's not as if I'm saying it's anything major, but it just bothers
me everytime i listen to it.

Would people please STOP the NIN discussion? Last I checked this was a Dream
Theater list. Furthermore, there's a (very active) alt.music.nin newsgroup,
take this crap there!
I think NIN suck. I don't want to read about them. I don't want to read
that they suck either. And don't bother replying to that comment, because no
matter what you say, I'll still think they suck, period. I don't want
to read anything about them at all. I want to read about Dream Theater.
Come on people, if you're going to talk about other bands that's fine, but
at LEAST discuss prog-rock/metal bands, bands that many YtseJammers
might be interested in knowing about (for example, IVANHOE). And if you must
talk about NIN, I wish people would at least stick to USELESS information,
and not start arguments about them just for the hell of this.
(Say, didn't we just go through all this, err... last week with BM?!?)

So here I am once more, in the playground of the Ytsejam (Free to Marillion#s #Script Of A Jesters Tear#)
It has been quit awhile since my last post to the Ytsejam. I kept reading the jam but were unable to send stuff in. So first a big thanks to Mike Bahr. AD is great, and up till now, I think, the best sounded CD released. It almost sounds like an official released album. As I told in my last mail to the jam, overhere we had three releases in the last month. Besides ACOS and AD the second Instrumental has been released in The Netherlands.
I have some questions, which hopefully can be answered by someone.
1. I just got the #Wake Up# boot the other day. But between the songs the noise of the crowd drops out abruptly. Does the Japanese radio make use of commercials between the songs, or did the makers break it for some unexplainable reason.
2. Every now and then it seems the line of Ytsejams get broken. For example from the last five or six Ytsejams I didn#t get number 1087 and 1091. Is that because they don#t excist or are they too long, as Ken Bibb told in Ytsejam 1092? Maybe you got an answer to this, Ken? I know someone asked this before. But I can#t remember reading the answer in the Ytsejam.
3. Why are the last two songs of AD not mentioned on the back-cover of the album? (Maybe someone asked this before as well)
4. Is there someone in the land of Ytsejam interested in trading bootleg recordings. I don#t have that much of DT stuff to trade (and I think most of you have it already), but I got a lot of progressiv stuff to trade. Please e-mail me personnally on this one to one of the addresses mentioned below.

Hi all, Saturday I received AD #177 and I must say thank you to Mike Bahr. The quality of this boot surpasses WDADU in production. It is really different to hear like WFS on guitar rather than keyboards-takes some getting used to but I like it. The different versions of 6:00 and lifting shadows is some of the best. Again a big THANK YOU to Mike. I was worried it would sound muffled like most boots but this thing is CLEAR! The only exception is where in a couple of places it sounds like James voice overloads the board and some clipping happens but it isn't often and of short duration. I just read where Mike has sold out so if you didn't get one, TOO BAD! wilmo

Hi Jammers,
just wanted to jump on the latest thread (well actually there seem to be a lot of threads lately) about the German band called Ivanhoe. I think that I am one of the few members that have seem them perform live. That concert was back in the summer of 1994 at an outdoor venue (rather a city park) of Almelo, the Netherlands. One splendid sunday afternoon a symfonic festival was held, and the bands that performed were Ivanhoe, Egdon Heath (Dutch band), Asgard (Italian band), Enchant and Jadis. Needless to say it was quite an interesting line-up and, considering the admittance was free (yes, Dutch people are cheap!), it proved to be a good concert overall. Ivanhoe were substitutes for another band that could not make it, and they didn't impress me that much. At the time, it seemed an Iron Maiden-ripoff with some keyboards thrown in at random. Maybe they are hard to appreciate when you hear them for the first time, or maybe the music has changed since then, but I can't imagine that this band now sounds alike to DT. I guess that I should give them a second chance, because the first time that I heard DT (WDADU) I wasn't that impressed either. Please email if you disagree!
