Skip over this one if you don't want to know how you get the answer:

This puzzle is an interesting one. It is also not that difficult and I bet
most of you will kick yourselves after reading how to get the answer.

The puzzle starts like this: 1

You have one 1. Therefore the next line is 11. You now have tww ones,
making the next line 21. At this point you have one 2 and one 1. Next
line= 1211. Now you have one 1 one 2 two 1s which equals 111221. Finally
you have three 1s two 2s one 1 which gives and answer of 312211. There you
    go. Wasn't that easy.

Although Mike says this puzzle has nothing to do with math he is incorrect.
It actually is related to Pascal's triangle in some weird way. One of my
closets friends researched this triangle and proved some relation to
pascal's triangle. As a matter of fact i believe you can use this one to
generate pascal's. Maybe I'll ask him.

Lonn Friend was a big advocate of her "Above, Below, and Beyond" album. His big review went like this: "This is Jennifer Batten, she's sort of a female Joe Satriani, lots of instrumental guitarwork. Check her out!" I think Reb Beach would be a closer reference, considering all the tapping flurries these two were afficionados of.

Actually, it's semi-decent shit, it's just that I'm getting a kick out of the whole *** IMPORTANT *** thing.

Dream Theater vs. Nine Inch Nails... wow... talk about comparing things on different ends of the musical spectrum! I see a musical circle of sorts where rock in general is concerned. The basic spectrum runs:

    prog .......... metal ..........rock/classic ..... pop......techno

But there's a rear-end to the line that connects it in a circle. Imagine the circle like this...

Dream Theater .... Queensryche ... Rush ... Boston ... (cont'd;) ...Pearl Jam ... STP ... Bon Jovi ... Faith No More... NIN

But there's a backside to the circle: NIN .... Bjork ... Tori Amos ... Echolyn ... Dream Theater

Is my general path of musical progression making any sense? NIN and DT are connected more by their progressiveness than by the fact that they're both considered "rock".

I am not a huge NIN fan, but I like what Trent does, and I respect his songwriting ability and such. IT's a real horse of a different color than Dream Theater. Some say DT lives in an idealistic world and NIN in a realistic, depressing one, but I think both bands exaggerate a bit. I think Rush is closest to the Truth.

Compare: Terrible Lie Space Dye Vest or Cold Fire?

Compare: March of the Pigs March of the Tyrant or The Ides of March (just kidding, had to do this one.)

Compare: Closer to God Voices or Natural Science

Both NIN and DT deserve the acclaim due their talent. But in this case, I'm going to have to side with Rush. :)

Hey look, it's a top five poll (Augh, not you, too, jeremy!). My fave members of DT: 1. Kevin M; 2. John P; 3. Mike; 4. John M; 5. Derek S.

Notice anyone missing? Vocalists. How can I have a list without James LaBrie, you ask? Well, I've used this poll to demonstrate how wierd I must be: I don't like James that much.

Gasp! How can it be? I say we kill him now!

While James has his moments, a lot of times he sounds like he's trying to have that Heavy Metal Sound (tm)) and just has to scream. But this is more a live problem. In the studio, it seems to be a combination of the melodies he has to sing (they seem to hang around the same note way too much) and something which seems like he is on the verge of slipping out of tune.

Not that James sucks. He's quite an adequate singer, and I have a lot of worse singers in my music collection. He's just not going to be one of my favorites. This is the only place where DT falls short for me. Now if they had Geoff Tate or Fish or Michael Sadler... one can dream.

Oh, and is it just me or does the "Attention all planets of the solar federation" bit at the end of 2112 sound like the protagonist has lost to syrinx? I think the combination of cheesy processing and cheesy lyrics did the three boys in.

And finally... This isn't really a stupid post. This is a special post. This is an important post. This is a dance post. This is--

THIS IS RED ROCKS! THIS IS THE EDGE!

I want to talk about an important band, which could have an important effect on everybody on this list tonight, if they were willing to take a chance and let this band into their hearts and beings.

And this band wrote a great song, for they are the authors of A Change of Seasons, the song that could change your lives as it has changed mine.

And I hope that someday, that you will all have the chance to hear A Change of Seasons, and experience the wisdom of the great, the great and knowledgeable--

band who wrote A Change of Seasons, because they are the one, the only

authors of A Change of Seasons. They are the band, the great band, the only, the special-- Their name is--

the authors of A Change of Seasons. They are the great, the knowledgeable, the one and the only, the great, the knowledgeable--

people who wrote A Change of Seasons, whose name could only be--

the one, the only, the only, the special--they wrote the fucking song, okay--

    and their name

    is

    DREAM THEATER!

(: sorry about that...inspired by the latest **IMPORTANT** post.

    Hello Jammers,

Ivanhoe ------- Since I started all this by making a compilation tape for Trey, I figure I better let you know about this album. I am also going to put the info on it in my WWW unsigned/indie label bands page right after I send this message to the Jam. I have been working on the page but it still has a lot of empty entries.

Band Album Label Cat# ---- ----- ----- ---- Ivanhoe Symbols of Time Music is Intelligence WMMS 100

This album is a German import that combines elements of Dream Theater and Queensryche. The vocalist is excellent with a slight accent but he annunciates his words very well. The guide through which my friend Chris ordered the disk has the description of the CD as Dream Theater and Genesis, the vocalist holds the vocal power of Peter Gabriel and James LaBrie. Interesting. Several heavy tracks and a few slower tunes, the music is very complex and for those who hated Shadow Gallery because the vocalist is "wimpy", this is the album for you. This vocalist has balls. The musicianship is about par with Dream Theater, better than Black Jester, Queensryche, and Shadow Gallery. I highly recommend it.

    To get this disk:

e-mail one of the following sources:

    Sights and Sounds genesisman@aol.com

    The Laser's Edge lasercd@aol.com

    or contact:

Of Sound Mind Phone (410)529-7082 FAX (410)529-5761

4134 E. Joppa Road Ste 104 (The address of his shop) Baltimore, Maryland 21236

I got the CD from this place, my friend Chris Lamka is the owner (BTW he has an extra Subconscious CD for sale, call him for information) and I know he can get the Ivanhoe disk among other imports and hard to find domestic disks. I think he has Conception, Black Jester, Time Machine, and several other Prog-Metal bands in stock.

The first two e-mail addresses are reliable, both of those guys are dealers of progressive music and should be able to get the CD.

Nin vs Dream Theater -------------------- I think nin has its merits but I cannot see how Trent can be so pissed off all of the time. I tend to believe in more of a duality in life, good/bad, happy/sad <grin>. But even when I have been depressed in the past (really badly about 7 years ago), I have come out of it. Dream Theater shows a better view of the "balance" I see in life (yes I am a so called Generation Xer, though I have goals (I intend to work developing computer networks and interfaces in hospitals eventually, and finish putting myself through college, hopefully by the spring <grin>) and morals) than nin, though they each have their merits.

BTW nin fans should check out the new King Crimson album THRAK! Adrian Belew (who played on the last nin album) is one of the guitarists and is the lead vocalist. They are similar to nin (or nin is similar to them, depends on perspective) and are one of my favorite bands.

The way I look at it, anyone can look at the world and see shit, be inspired and sing about what they see. It is easy to relate to music like that, because for the most part, that is the life people live from day to day and moment to moment.

The challenge lies in seeing the crap and decay that exist and still believing in your heart that this is not the way it has to be. This is the spirit that is embodied in DT's music. No, it's not reality, but there isn't a person alive who wouldn't revel in it if it was.

As long as that dream can be kept alive, even if only in the imaginations of those who believe in the music, then the world that Trent Reznor sing aboput will only be a way station on the journey.

The utopia may only exist in the mind, but that doesn't make it any less real.

    > In ACOS, a lyric states "even though I'm gone, I will live >on." Wrong! Dead is dead. Just ask the lead singer of Blind Melon. >Honor thy father and honor thy mother are outdated notions. The son of >the fictional protagonist of the song will probably not even shed a tear >for his father. Or if he does, there won't be anything but a vacuum of >societal expectation that predicates it.

Emotion is not based on a societal expectation. If tears are fake and emotion has been purged from the modern man's soul, then what are we to make of NIN's lyrics? There can be no emotion behind them, and with no emotion, there is no meaning.

I don't believe that's true. NIN fills their lyrics with negative images, just as DT fills theirs with positive. Put them together and you get a symbiosis that truly describes the modern soul: See the negative, but dream for the positive.

    > > "Seasons change, and so can I," DT sings. > > But you can't change. You can't transcend.

But you can. You just have to believe you can. If you go through life believing you are going to fail, you are already a failure.

    > "I am the truth from which you run, and I control you," nin sings. >It means you can try to change, but you're just making a temporary >escape from your own nature. A nature that you hold as a consequence of >the how you were brought up.

A nature which is redefined by every moment that you are alive, by every choice you make, by every dream, every chance meeting, every emotion.

A persons nature is not static, but evolutionary. *That* is where the future lies. _________________________________________________________________________ /_________________Pat Sullivan__psull@ici.net_____________________________\ ||She turned for one last look []Poison, power. Hello, This is my first ever post to the 'jam. I must say that if you disregard some of the top 5 lists, the BM postings, etc. there is quite a lot of useful and interesting information that cannot be found from any other sources.

Anyway, after reading several Jammers' opinions on the Lie and Silent Man singles, I looked for and found them at a local Newbury Comics store (it's a chain music/comics/T-shirt type of store in the Northeast). I also saw the Japanese import version of Awake which, I guess (since I can't read Japanese) contains the Awake CD as released in the US and another CD of some sort. Since the price on this puppy was $39.99 I figured I would find out what is on that 2nd CD and if it's worth getting at this price. Most of the other prices on imports there were close to what I have seen elsewhere, so I assume this is probably a typical price for this, I just want to find out what's on there.

    1 - start here 11 - last line had one 1 in it, hence 1-1, or 11 21 - last line had two 1's: 2-1's... 1211 - last line had one 2 and one 1: 1-2, 1-1 111221 - last line had one 1, one 2, and two 1's: 1-1, 1-2, 2-1's

312211 - and the line you were to come up with: previous line had three 1's, two 2's, one 1.

Hope this made sense for any of you still wondering...

As for DT content... hmm... Oh yeah, what's with all these covers I keep hearing about them playing live? When I saw them in Oklahoma City about a year ago, I don't recall them playing any covers at all, or for that matter I don't think they did anything that wasn't on Images and Words or Awake... they may have slipped something off WDADU that I didn't notice as such immediately with James singing instead of Charlie, but I don't think they did. Not that covers aren't cool, but I find it odd that the show I saw had *no* covers and now they seem to be doing 3-4 covers a show from the sound of things... I guess they have had a change of feeling or something...

    1. First album: Images and Words, heard Pull Me Under once on the radio and knew I had to have the album; in fact, they played it a couple more times and never said who it was by and I was starting to get pissed off (thought I'd have to go to the record store and start singing!). Also saw a review in Guitar World that convinced me it was a good buy.

    2. Fav song: Metropolis

    3. Least fav song: Innocence Faded or Status Seeker

    4. Age: 24

    5. Gender: Male

    6. I play guitar (well, kinda sorta <grin>)

Well, the comments about NIN are quite interesting, especially since Dream Theater and Nine Inch Nails are my two favorite bands. And I've seen each 3 times, yet another coincidence. I think the whole point, though, is that NIN and DT are two completely different bands with two completely different purposes. You really cannot compare the two. Sure, NIN is darker and more cynical and DT is more complex is technique and musical structure. But I listen to the two for two different reasons. I like DT because the music is constantly changing, because so many lyrical and musical ideas are being expressed, and because it's heavy while still musically phenominal. I listen to NIN because I think the lyrics are more honest...not afraid to say when life sucks because it does sometimes. I like all the different sounds Trent brings into his music and I think he's a master song writer, but on a different extreme from DT. Not technical and musically complex, but complex in terms of sound layering, mood, and ability to make a song into an actual feeling whether rage, sorrow, or pain. Yes, it's negative, but some of life is negative. And I can identify with some of those feelings. We watch horror movies to scare us and comedies to make us laugh. But we don't say one is better than the other. Why can't we have one band that does one thing and another that does another without saying that one sucks and the other doesn't. My mood is sometimes DT and sometimes Reznor. I would hate to limit myself to only one. So, in summary, I listen to NIN for emotional outlet and DT for their technically amazing music and "ride" a literal music roller coaster. Rocketboy >>Satellitel of Love<<

Ok. I saw NIN and David Bowie in concert. It was amaizing. NIN started with a set of about 5 songs and then David Bowie came on stage with NIN and performed 3 songs after that Bowie finished his set. DB Has really changed his musical style and he performed a remake of _The Man Who Sold the World_ that was better and the original. If anybody can get me a bootleg of the show I would be eternally grateful. My only complaint was that all fo the "trendoids" left after Trent left the stage.

    1) >but what saddens me is that there have been a fair number of >postings with the nature of "due to the content of posts recently I >am reluctantly unsubscribing from the jam etc.". > >Come on guys, do we relly need to drive members away?

I disagree with the almost sympathy (mercy fuck) given here to people who quit on us. I feel this list is here for DT fans to discuss their interest. The death of Shannon Moon was of our interest. I agreee that it got very old, but if that was enough to make a fan quit then so be it. If he (sorry, he/she) was a new jammer I agree that its a shame that this person couldn't experience what the jam is really like, but oh well. If the person was an old jammer and knows what its normally like and the small amount of "child's play", as someone called it, was enough to make him/her leave, then screw them. Obviously their not as devoted of a fan than the rest of us. Now don't think that this means I WANT to make people leave, but if they did I just think it was a sorry excuse!

Whats the point of this and what 10 secs did they cut?

I coudn't agree more. And stop the polls!

    5) >Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it usually the policy of the >particular venue that prevents minors from attending concerts?

Yes you are correct but DT's managment chooses the places they play and knows whetther it is all ages or not...

    6) >I find it interesting how people compare bands to each other. While >I think Shadow Gallery (SG) and DT are "similiar" I would never >compare them to each other.

Guys I think I may have been the one who said that Shadow Gallery was so much like DT. I was wrong! I read the tape cover wrong and the band I meant was IVANHOE. I didn't realize this until I had purchased Shadow Gallery. But I promise you guys will love IVANHOE.

Go to my homepage and download a wav fileof them. Or all of them for that matter. I promise you will love them!
