    *** To Mike Bahr:

Here's a suggestion for forthcoming products. You are still in the
production phase of "When Dream and Today Unite", right? Why not replace
whatever version of "Ytsejam" you have (I have a hunch it's the "TDoE" one,
and I suppose quite a few people already have that one) by the one that was a
"Live at the Marquee" outtake, and throw "Under a Glass Moon" on as a rather
less "WDADU"-related bonus track? Personally, I would rather have a handful
of stonkingly excellent CDs than twice the amount with less quality contents.
"Acoustic Dreams", for example, was totally excellent (Petrucci sounds way
groovier) but I can't help thinking that, somehow, I would have liked
something on the remaining 15 minutes that the CD could have held. When I buy
one of your CDs I have to exchange Dutch guilders for dollars (costs US$ 2
per transaction) and then register the letter with the money in it (US$ 8 per
package). That tends to crank up the price quite a bit, theoretically up to
almost US$ 40 if I only bought one CD.
Please don't get me wrong: I think you're the greatest when it comes to
providing a service like you do, and I always enjoy reading your mails (as
well as those of Ben Laussade, fellow guitarists, and even the two people who
might be faking as Petrucci and Portnoy). I guess it's human nature to want
more (or better) stuff for the same price :)

*** To the people investigating the Petrucci email address:

Wouldn't it be extremely easy to verify its realness by calling the phone
number that was in the info you get when fingering (or whatevering) his
    account?

*** To the guy who was thinking of doing a shred mailing list:

You might try the neoclassical mailing list of Igor Sinyak; it does pretty
much what you intended to do. I don't know what the mailing list address is,
    though.

*** To the Ytsejam filter idea:

I toyed with the idea, too. Wouldn't it be nice to get some of the zero-wits
on this list off it? Still, if you want an exemple of a true zero-wit list
you should subscribe to the Metallica one. Loads of people attempting to use
"fuck" even more than James Hetfield, and no backed-up opinions (mostly just
"this song sux" or "Metallica have sold out" without further explanation).
And the amount of people assuming they can unsubscribe by sending a message
to the actual list address is *staggering*!

    *** Food for thought:

I heard they've taken the word "gullible" out of the Oxford English
    Dictionary...

Welcome to the Bafujams. As part of my effort to be more silenzio, I
decided to wait a while before posting, so I let the 'jams pile up in my
mailbox a bit. This is called "Mistake #1." I just read eight in a row,
and #1080 piqued my interest, so here I am. Yes, this is excruciatingly
long. Pretend I only posted once in each of the last ten 'jams, which I
think is how long it's been. Or was it eleven? (twenty-three?)

I don't know if you wish to be referred to as John or Mike, but I would like to mention that your letter encompassed such genuine intelligence combined with thoughtful analysis that it is what inspired me to post. My hat goes off to you, sir. You remind me of the days when Awake hit the stores and all 900 (or so?) of the members on this list transformed from musicians to philosophers for a period of weeks. Every 'Jam was packed with deep discussions of lyrical metaphors and parallels, but that was back before I was ever a member(reading along on someone else's terminal), so I never got to engage in the subject until the second wave of lyrics-analysis this past March.

This line, however, is nin, not DT:

    > PS This is not a joke or a ploy to meet men - HONEST!

I AM OFFENDED!!! Are you implying that all men do is drive cars and wash cars and live in their cars? I don't even OWN a car!! I HATE cars!! Of all the men at my college, only *8* out of some 15,000 drive cars!! Maybe you should open your eyes to the highways around you and take note of who's behind the wheel.

**Your attention please. That was a joke.**

If you reply to it with a serious tone, and are actually offended at what I've said, I would not advise subscribing to anymore Internet mailing lists anytime soon, because they can get much more abrasive than this. Furthermore, I've noticed that the Real World is somewhat harsher than Internet mailing lists, and (wake up) it will devour you if this sort of playful retorting causes you to become genuinely enraged. Of course I knew what Babs meant, and of course I'm not angry at her. Were I angry at her, I'd reply privately anyway.

(better get out my flak-basket, methinks I'll be catching a lot of it for this.)

Let's hope your 20-foot-thick adamantium wall is strong enough not to melt beneath my volcanic dragon-breath... :)

    > I read in November's 'GUITAR' - (with Joe Satriani on the cover - and > transcription for his 'Luminous Flesh Giants' inside) - that STEVE VAI > will be supporting BON-JOVI on their US tour !!!

Obviously, someone isn't into Bon Jovi. I myself think "These Days" is a great album. Bluntly, it's pure rock and roll the way it was meant to be played, and I hope these guys never break up because they have STUCK IT OUT when a lot of their 1986-1992 contemporaries have been obliterated by other trends that would see them dead before successful. Bon Jovi should tour with Queensryche, Metallica, and Def Leppard sometime, just because these four have, in my opinion, displayed a will and a drive unseen in many other 80's bands that at one time were major threats to everyone in the music scene, but have since become extinct.

Now for my Vai comments: Huh? Eh? You expect Steve Vai to tour the nation by HIMSELF?? You think he'd get any backing at all? Much like myself, he practices an art form that publicly died a few years ago. He has hung tough, but I think he's aware that in the United States, no solo-guitarist can embark on a nationwide tour by themselves. Not even Yngwie Malmsteen does this in the US, despite his immense and obvious popularity in other countries.

And if you think Vai would have made more money and become more successful staying with David Lee Roth than going solo, you're absolutely right. Why didn't he stick with what was, at one time, the most kickass collection of musicians around? He wanted to do his OWN thing. Vai has had multitudes of chances to land gigs in bands that tour worldwide, and yet he has not. Go ahead and call him fickle, it's also called musical integrity, and he's got lots of it.

Perhaps a quote from a fellow Ytsejammer is in order:

"Excuse me? Sacrifice my musical integrity by wearing a sock on my head? No fucking thanks."

Now who can tell me who said this? (hint: it probably wasn't Airdance, since it's got that word in it. see? now it's down to 1198.)

(you understand, Pat, that I'm not Attacking You, I'm instead Defending Bon Jovi & Steve Vai?)

It occurs to me that I shouldn't even be saying this, considering who posted, but I agree entirely. JP is very subtle in his chromatics, which in my opinion is his main technique-relation to Steve Morse.

After reading the last eight 'jams in a row, I'm am assuming that this is a parody/ridicule in reference to Bucketbot's "challenging" of the list and commanding everyone to use "****IMPORTANT****" in their subject: line, like only one person reads these posts. It seems like an awful lot of people are pointing out how silly it was to demand the attention Bucketbot seems to have demanded in that "You must use ****IMPORTANT***" posting, by putting up completely UN-important stuff. I'm sorry I missed my chance to jump on it, because it seems to be dying down, but maybe in the future we can all just learn to read the 'Jams? No matter how long they may be?

"Being laughed at and confused keeps us pleasantly amused enough to stay."

As evidenced by the disturbing number of "please remove me from your list" postings recently, this is not always the case.

hell, I like them both. The thing about learning to play instruments is really unfair and very narrow. I like some rap as well, and there's really no musicality (instrument-wise) involved. I get entertainment out of music - if I enjoy listening to something, it doesn't have to be musically perfect or necessarily be truthful to my existence in life or anything like that. NIN appeals to me in that it is intense, both lyrically and musically - it doesn't have to be excellent guitar playing or complex drums to be good music. DT appeals to me in the opposite sense - granted, it is still intense, but on an entirely different (not necessarily higher) level. The musicianship is unmatched, IMO, and the lyrical component is great as well.

The point I am trying to make is that it is futile to try and compare the two - their similarities are basically non-existent. It is a matter of individual personal opinion - if you think one band is better than another, more power to you - just don't attempt to force those opinions on others, because that's where the flames begin (especially on here lately :P ).

I just downloaded some more IvanHoe samples off Trey's web page, from the same song I got the 60 second sample from off the prog-rock page. These guys are INCREDIBLE!!!!!! EVERYONE on thislist should grab ALL the WAV files from http://junix.ju.edu/UsrWebPages/tallen/home.html, and off the prog-rock review page (just do a search for "IvanHoe", and they'll come up).

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET ANY OF IVANHOE'S ALBUMS?!?! I have GOT to hear more of them! The only time I've been this excited about a band before was when I first heard DT. The Ivanhoe vocalist is BETTER than James (IMO). He has better range, and a more diverse voice than James (again, IMO). They seem to be slightly more keyboard oriented than DT, but I guarantee you if you like I&W, you'll LOVE IVANHOE!! Thanks Trey, this is some cool shit ...

Mike M. : You ended your post by saying you hope for intelligent discourse on the subject but began the post by saying that the members of NIN should learn how to play their instruments if they want to be called musicians. I realize if someone has slandered DT to you and got in an argument with you blood is bound to boil.... but learn their instruments? That's something everyone was writing about Bland Lemon. We don't need to stoop to that again do we? Although you can probably state that the members of Dream Theater are more technically advanced with their instruments.... What does that really mean?

As Matt said... It's like comparing apples to oranges. Dream Theater's music is very advanced and their songs are often uplifting. Their writing style is excellent and very, very different from that of Trent Reznor. There is so much feeling and intensity in Trent Reznor's music. It is incredible. He's expressing his feelings and thoughts through his music and he does it very well.

I also agree with Matt in that there are some things that Dream Theater does very, very well... perhaps better than anyone else. There are also things that Trent Reznor/NIN do that no one else can accomplish at the same level. If Trent Reznor has some ideas that may not be in line with the majority as a whole... so what? You don't have to agree with his ideas to appreciate the music. I'm sure there are things in DT songs that people may not agree with... so what? We may love the music regardless of lyrics such as "Tell me 'bout your two more comin' but one is just enough for me...".... Get my meaning?

A song like 'Last' from 'Broken'... It's just packed with tremendous intensity. The music complements the lyrics very well. The riffs and solo are hard driving and intense. The piece flows very well, but it may not be your cup of tea.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that they are both excellent at what they are trying to accomplish, but they are each trying to achieve a different thing. You can not really say one is better than the other. We probably can say that we _prefer_ one to another without upsetting anyone.

For the record, I own the complete 'released' library for each and love (almost) every last bit of it.

This is again about the infamous fill, which may not be a fill, which is repeated, but then again, so is the entire thingie, so the repetition isn't at all significant.

Anyways, thanks to Ben Laussade and this other fellow who replied about the fill, with long explanations about rhythms and triplets and piglets. (BTW Ben - I didn't actually mind your sarcasm, I was just kidding).

It is sort of funny that what I originally wrote quickly to put some DT content into a post about Shadow Gallery got inflated into this huge, legendary thread :) Well, it might not be that, but nevertheless it is fun to see drum stuff discussed deeply, because usually that sort of discussion is reserved for the bass tracks and Petrucci's guitar playing.

Ben - I don't think the fill is repeated in The Inevitable Summer. I just got that impression for some reason, the fill (if it is a fill, someone disagreed :)) always gets my attention. I like the sound of it. Thanks for the explanation, it was very ... informative and easy to understand.

And Zach, yes, the ****IMPORTANT**** thingie is something of an inside joke. :-)

BTW, I'm sure everyone is dying to hear my top-5 DT members, but I won't type 'em in alphabetical order ... *giggle* 1. Mike Portnoy 2. Kevin Moore (ex) 3. John Muyng 4. James LaBrie 5. John Petrucci and no, I'm not living in the past, I just don't know enough about Derek to put him in there.. Same goes for Charlie D.

Neil Gallop mentioned Moist.. They rock, everyone go get their album.. Someone called it "post-grunge", but I don't know if that is a good categorization.. They don't sound like boring grunge or alternative. They have a good singer, nice keyboard stuff, and very good songwriting skills. I think most DT-fans will like them, although they are not progressive in the sense Dream Theater or FW are.

That's what I have for today :) Antti currently listening to Life of Agony's new album ... not bad.

    Hi, Jammers

I'm a new participant to this list and needed as much information on the upcoming 3 shows in NY/NJ. Dates, times, venue, directions, where to get tickets, you name it I need it. I'm in Miami and several of my friends are interested in going to at least 1one of the shows. I'll be grateful for any information.

My opinion on who has the ability to stand in for a member of DT :

Vocals- Bruce Dickinson, Dio Guitar - Steve Morse, Frank Gambale, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani Bass - John Pettetuci( it's a big coincident that their name's are similar), Stu Hamm Keys - Jens Johansson Drums - Scott Rockenfield, Atma Anur

By the way, how can I get a ytsejam shirt? Bye all, Victor A. Herrera Jrney05@aol.com

    Greetings Jammers.

Just some more details of the Live in Japan video I mentioned previously. This is definately from the Awake tour, as Bill guessed and is as far as I can recall, the same set that I saw in Denver in November. I'll double check this when I'm home and post the track listing, in case the FAQ maintainer (who is this these days?) want to include it. As I said before, there are no markings on the tape itself, and the case has a Japanese flag on front with Dream Theater above and Live in Japan below. The back has a listing of the songs and maybe a picture. The pre and post show commentaries are done by a Japanese woman (speaking very fast). During the show a logo, WOWOW, appears in the corner of the screen. Mike also shouts this as he returns backstage after the show. My guess is that this could be the radio/tv station sponsoring the event. Can any of our Japanese members confirm this ?? Note that this is not the official Live in Tokyo video from the I&W tour.

Now for some observations about the length and frequency of the digest. It appear to me that the length is always around 1000 lines, so I would guess this is automated. I do agree that the recent volume is hard to absorb. I have 96 messages in my mailbox and more than 70 of those are unread ytsejams. Short of a moderated digest, the only solution is to voluntarily restrict posting to relavant content. To me, this means DT content (songs, lyrics, concerts, activities of past and present members, transcriptions, etc). I also have learned about a couple of great bands (Shadow Gallery and Magellan, for example) and think this is very useful. I've been on the list long enough that I forget if a copy of the FAQ is mailed out when people subscribe, but this might be a way to suggest reasonable guidelines for content, if we could agree on what they are. (Comments anyone ? Ken Bibb ? ) Also, please pay attention when someone starts a poll and offers to compile the results. Everytime one of these starts, poll results start clogging the digest, when the poll requestor asked for personal email.

Hopefully, the above comments aren't harsh enough to start a flame war about censorship or who the hell do I think I am anyway. it's just that I have also come close to unsubscribing due to all the flames. But I value the forum enough to try to make it better before I give up. The quality of the jam is up to us, so let's make it as good as possible.

Think about exactly what you're saying before you vent on the 'Jam, Frank. You're asking the administrator to send us two jams a day. That means that he'd hold back another jam or two. In a week, we'd be 10 jams behind and any post you made would show up 2 weeks later. Think before you type. If you can't handle the number of jams, then do one of the following: 1. Unsubscribe. 2. Keep on deleting jams.

But if you do ANYTHING... be sure to do these... 1. Quit bickering so we don't have to read your meaningless mindless whining. 2. Quit writing in all caps. Everybody knows how annoying it is.

Tolerance: A virtue most of society still is in desperate need of.
