The end of the new ACOS reminds me of the Star Wars scenario....as if Obi
Wan's saying to Luke..."Uh, I'm gonna die now, but my spirit will still
be hanging around"....real cheesy, especially compared to old vision of
the child screaming for his parent to not die, in the ending "Please
don't go's".....especially with my interpretation of the new ACOS (YJ
967--the woman/love interest/ presumably the kid's other parent dying on
the protagonist as opposed to walking out) the child screaming "Please don't
go" to a second dying parent would be especially appropriate....

On another front: I've been listening to the 'perfect strangers' cover,
and then comparing that to the DP original, which is one of my all-time
favorites: It's great hearing DT do DP, but the original still holds the
upper hand....Dream Theater just doesn't hit those Kashmir grooves (the
part that sounds like it was lifted from Led Zep's song Kashmir) the way
Ritchie Blackmore did.....oh well, it's still an excellent song....

Anyhow, on a less critical note, I'm glad to announce that we may have a
new convert: I played the Led Zep covers to a Zep fan, and then moved on
to the rest of the EP....next comes Images and Words, then Awake....

Hi All, Thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and sing the praises of ACOS. I don't have DoE so I don't have that version to compare it to. I do like it alot. Would somebody be so kind as to drop me an email kinda telling what the differences are, basically story-wise. I really dig epic songs. I think it kinda seperates the men from the boys in the music industry. I really admire groups like DT and FW for being able to write songs more than 4:00 long. Since I'm on the subject, is there a FW mailing list? I've just recently gotten into them and would like to find out more about them. Someone asked where Derek was from wondering if he was from Long Isand. When I saw them in Minneapolis last year he said he was from California somewhere. If memory serves me correctly he even said he was a high-school drop out. There were a couple other Ytse-jammers there when I was talking to him, can anyone back me up? Well, that's all I have.

    Hi all.

Seems like everyone is jumping on this thread. Most of the stories go something like "heard I&W and was hooked," or "heard WDaDU and was hooked." My story starts out like this:

A few days after Awake was released, I was lamenting to a friend about the few days remaining until Queensryche's new release was coming out. At the time I didn't even know what the name of their new release was. (I live in a social void called Columbus, Indiana) Anyway, said friend told me that the new Qryche was called Promised Land, and that I really should check out Dream Theater. "Dream Theater? I had never heard of that QRyche bootleg," I confided. Todd said, "No, they are a separate group, and quite similar in some ways to 'Ryche." So when Promised Land was released (I believe one week after Awake), I picked up both.

I first listened to Promised Land. Then I listened to Awake. Then I listened to Awake again. Then again. At first I thought the band was QUITE heavy on the metal side (6:00 was the first song I heard of Dream Theater). Then I heard impressions of Kansas (keyboard doubling up on guitar). Then Yes and Rush. It took me quite a while to get "into" the music. I know I loved it from the first listen, it just took me a long time to hear everything that was going on. I was blown away. Two days later I went back to find out if Dream Theater had any other stuff out there. I found I&W. Now I had a choice. I could only listen to one of them at a time. :)

Well, that was back in November 94. I liked the two cds so much that instead of making a crappy copy onto cassette with my boom box to listen in the car, I bought both on cassette, too. Nine months later and both cassettes are worn out. I can't get enough. Most of the people I have shared them with have commented that they don't really like their style, but can certainly respect them for the stunning musical ability they show. I did have one convert. Of course, he is a big Rush fan, so one listen and he was hooked.

Sorry 'bout the length, but I felt like I had to share my story, since it differs from most. BTW, I did end up getting WDaDU, when I found out it existed this summer.

    Hi all,

There has been some discussion about the lyrics to ACOS, specifically the missing "Please don't go section". First, my opinion: I don't really miss it - to me it seems as if nothing else was thought of to sing in that section, so Please don't go was used just to fill in (remember, this is just MY opinion).

Anyway, for those of you who don't subscribe to the OFFICIAL DT fanzine, I&W yet (shame on those of you who don't!! I highly recommend getting it - you WON'T regret it. Address is in the Awake jacket), here's what Mike Portnoy had to say about the ACOS lyrics (hope this answers questions in some of your minds): "The story concept behind it, is in using the different seasons as a metaphor for life, drawing on my own personal experiences, such as my childhood and my mother's death." The text that follows that quote (dunno if it's another quote from Mike P or what...) says: 'The factors are incorporated into a story, whereby, the character goes through all the emotional ups and downs of life. He becomes suicidal, and his life flies by. Eventually he starts to appreciate life and his son, but it is too late for him, as he is old and he is now dying.'

A few quick other things about ACOS: I too miss the neo-classical guitar solo (I loved it - my fave part), though the other one is good too. The snare is a little annoying to me, but what can ya do? And that little keyboard solo Derek plays with drum accompaniment (the one that sounds like a saloon piano) doesn't fit at all! Other than that, I like the new version much better.

On the full Ronnie Scott's show on video thread: Stephane (from France) told me they originally were going to release the entire show on video, but the quality wasn't good enough; I don't know what this means (sound bad? video bad? what else is there?) - could you let us know what the problem was with it, Stephane?

On the thank you to DT thread: YES! Let's definitely send our thanx to the band! I'm sure this will be well appreciated. It may also open the way for more releases similar to ACOS in the future (perhaps we could petition for the full length Ronnie Scotts video...).

And speaking of petitions, maybe we could start another petition asking for the Uncovered show (with different covers) to become a regular thing - once a year or once every tour... As to what I'd like to hear them play, I have too many, so lemme write 'em down and I'll post them later. How does everyone else feel about this idea??? Oh and another thought (similar idea) how about a one-off show of them playing all the old, unreleased songs (from the Majesty demos, Resurrection of Ernie, etc.) that were never officially released? Just some ideas...

Whew! Sorry for the length of the post - please respnd though - I'd like to hear what everyone thinks of these other ideas!

A few things: Does Myung use any grease on his sound? I absolutely love his really tight low B. I've tried to get this, but I have failed miserably. For all those who got promo copies of ACOS: I hope that those copies count as record sales, for the boys' sake! One more, does anyone know of any really good left hand exercises for bass? Right hand? Thanks Rich

While I'm here, I'll throw in some DT content. I love ACOS!! The covers I'm not very psyched about, but ACOS is like a return to vintage DT, with a lot more Rush thrown in...hear all those Neil Peart bells?

Now for my real post...me and Colin (another ytsejammer) went with a friend who was working security at Van Halen last night at Fiddler's Green (Denver) She snuck us in via backstage gate, and we integrated into the 12th row. The majic was that all day yesterday was Colorado's first day of snow. At night it turned into more of a blizzard, and did I mention Fiddler's is an outdoor ampitheater? Sammy says, "We've been playing for 17 years...not one of us has ever played an outdoor summer concert in a snowstorm. The band was having a blast (despite Eddie's picking hand being too cold), we were having a great time right up in front, and it was FREE!! A lucky night, and an unforgettable one. Hats off to Halen for not canceling the show! -Adam

This is for the post. Is anybody out there a fan of Damn the Machine? If so, do you have any idea what they're up to these days? On an obscure note: does anyone have any information about the solo album by Chris Poland (Damn the Machine and former Megadeth guitarist)? It was called Return to Metalpolis. It's out of print, as far as I know. I'm not going to shell out big $ for it cause I've never heard it, but I would still appreciate any info. anyone can give. Thanks.

    YES!!!!!

THIS SONG RULZ! (of course... i *knew* that before i bought it)

went out and got the cd yesterday .... yeah im really really sorry guys! i couldnt get it until *Wednesday* ! ( i have no car ... enough said ?)

well, listened to it on the way home, and about 5 more times that evening and twice today already! i REALLY LOVE the new parts ... they are incredible ... especially "The Inevitable Summer" .... i love Dead Poet's Society too so that aspect was cool with me .... the part though during "another world" (i think) where James both says and sings the lyrics and the music builds, and BUILDS, AND BUILDS! until singing "I LOVE YOOOUU!"

    ****STOP*****

    "goodbye!"

    OH YES!!!!!

can we say goosebumps! can we say massive chills and waves of feeling rushing over me!!! can we say absolute emotional angst like falling off of a cliff and in that one moment when you just hang there : "goodbye" and then you start plummeting! ...

i REALLY like Derek's sounds for the most part ... i was a little worried about that because Kevin just had sounds that fit the band so well ... i was also concerned about derek's writing ... i dont think we can really tell what he'll do for the band from this release in the respect but his solo work on ACOS is most impressive ... not the same flavor as kevin and not as much tension but very "guitar" like as kevin was which i think is what really makes a good keyboard solo ... you need often to think a little more like a guitarist...

unfortunately ... two of my favorite parts were taken out although i didnt even miss one of them for the first five or so listenings ... the lines they took out "love is not just a passing whim, it's a state of hope that goes on forever" ... i really miss that a lot though and am not happy with what they substituted ... but in general, the lyrical writing is fantastic ...

this piece makes me cry ... in two parts.... the part i described above and the veyr last vocal part .... it is SO moving .... it really makes me think alot about death and life and what death is going to mean ...

i guess i'll get more into that though when my thoughts are clearer ...

_____ It was a struggle. Anyone else on the list begin by disliking DT? jeremy (jeremy@grove.ufl.edu) _____

Actually, that sounds exactly like my case. My brother brought in Awake, and I gave it a listen and found myself only liking Caught in a Web, and only for the main melody part no less. After 2 months of forceful listening to the CD I absolutely became a DT fanatic. Then I went out and bought Images and Words, knowing I at least liked one song on there (PMU). I plopped it in the changer, and listened to it for awhile. At the end of a very forced listening, I was like "Crap, why did I buy this. This sucks." Then, again after at least a month of listening I was playing the shit out of that disc I liked it so much. Now it takes no time at all for me to like songs I haven't heard before by DT, like ACoS, Fortune in Lies, Killing Hand, and Eve. I immediately fell in love with those puppies. Right now my cd changer has all 5 slots filled with DT. woo00, I love this shit..

    1) Hello, ACOS and DT, like Tony the Tiger says it "Therrrrre Grrrrrreat!!"

    2) As the great Ytsejammers that we all are, we have the duty to uphold our convictions of DT to the local radio staions. Can you imagin what would happen if every one of us called the local rock stations 5 times a day and requested maybe "The Big Medley"!!!! The results would be tremendous!!! I've been doing it here in Jacksonville, FL but I dont listen to the radio so I dont know if it worked :-)

    3) What is the signifcance of November 16th on the cover? It talks about the chill in November in the song. Is the boy on the cover Mike Portnoy maybe? Any comments...?

    4) You guys who got your ACOS copy early should have made it more clear that only the words were gone not hte killer groove rhythm also: "PLEASE DON"T GO!!!" duh di di di deh dut dhat dhut di di dee (repeat)

    5) Yes Dan I also hear Erotomania in ACOS but I think its the organ sound and interval used on Erot.

    6) doesn't that 7 string acoustic in the intro sound incredible! Ive never even seen a 7 string acoustic!

    7) I'm glad Derek's name isn't John!

At the clinic he was asked about the lyrics for ACoS, and he replied that most of the song was about him dealing with the death of his mom, who diied in a plane crash (Preparing for her flight...).

Also I was wondering if any of the Bass Players on here knows exactly what Myung is doing on Metropolis (The tapping part).

As for how I got into Dream Theater, A few months after IaW came out a friend bought the CD for me because he knew I was heavily into Prog. music. Ever since then I was hooked. Well I gotta go listen to ACoS again before I start my homework. Bye!

Uh. No. I walked into a friend's (dorm) room and he said that I had to listen to this new band, Dream Theater. So I borrow WDADU, finish it, bring it back, then run next door to Tower Records and buy it. I loved it from the beginning. This is kinda funny though, in a not-really kinda way. For about 3 years I didn't listen to rock. I didn't care about it. I missed Roll the Bones and Counterparts because of it. I listened to the radio kinda but not much. A friend played I&W for me and I didn't even notice. I thought it was OK. He liked it. After that phase, I was reading an interview with JP and JM in some guitar mag. They're talking about Awake, so I go buy it (it just came out). I hadn't heard it and was a little worried. I loved it from the start. For some dumb reason I was still afraid that I wouldn't like I&W so I didn't get it until a few months ago. Of course, I loved it from the start too.

I have loved every DT album from the first listen and I still love them all. They kill me. They are truly phenomenal. Unbelievable.

Heh. That was me :p. OK. I'll give him another listen. I guess I shouldn't have said anything because when I last heard that Starship Trooper (from a live video) it was a long, long time ago. I do remember him tapping though and thinking it was... disrespectful? I also had weird ideas back then (I was just a yung'n). So, sorry. Didn't mean to offend (he was _tapping_ on Starship Trooper). ha ha. Check this out. I'm jamming with my friend. We're working on a new tune and he plays a bit and I'm like, "that sounds _exactly_ like... like... White Lion!! Remember Wait?" It was hilarious. Then, from amongst thousands of tapes, he pulls that one out and plays it. Vito Brata. It was a nice tasteful solo too. I forgot. he he. Don't ask why I told you that.

    HI ytsejammmers

    ACOS is fantastic......nuff said!

I know this isn't the hot topic right now but I'm trying to find out more about eve and TLF. I have never heard them (yes , I have been deprived :(.....). I'm trying to find the lie and silent man singles. Are they worth it?(I think I already know the answer to that). If someone would be so gracious to tell me about eve and TLF I would greatly appreciate it. You can e-mail me directly if you like. Thanks in advance. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Everett Painter "Before the leaves have fallen... Radford University Before we lock the doors... I just noticed tonight that the coloring on the statue on the cover of AWAKE is messed up. The head of the statue is a very light grey color while the lower area of the statue is a darker grey color. Does anybody know why this is? I thought that it was because he could see his head in the mirror. Oh well, whatever...

I like the intro, but I agree that the outro doesn't fit. That BIG chord is a nice ending.

What I really like about ACOS is Myung's playing. It really stands out, and the playing during Inevitable Summer is very different from his usual styles.

Mike's tuned percussion and John's bass right before Inevitable Summer is my favorite part of the song.

Well, I was reading an interview with Geddy Lee (in '89 or '90) and the interviewer mentioned Rush influenced bands. I was familiar with every band he mentioned except for DT. That got me very curious... I then noticed that the keyboards on the song 'At Fates Hands' by Fates Warning were provided by "Kevin Moore or Dream Theater". I asked my friend who was up on every band if he had heard of DT and he gave me a copy of WD&DU... I was instantly blown away and I bought the WD&DU CD... I got I&W the week before it came out... The highlight of my interest in DT came when my band INFERNO opened for them here in Jacksonville, FL... What a night! Mike bonded with our drummer and JP and JL mentioned which of our songs caught their attention! It was great!

I remember someone who had a pmu drums mod. It was okay, though I had to fix a few glitches. When I save it, I guess it saved corrupt, cause I can't get back to it. Tried to find it using archie, but archie seems to be completely brain-dead these days. Could the author mail me (and how's that Take the Time mod going)?

BTW anyone else out there have any DT, or simply progressive, mods or octameds?

well, here's the paradox to this scenario, IMO:

let's just say, for argument's sake, that ACoS does become a smash success and DT is rocketed to the upper echelons of rock stardom. they get a video in heavy rotation. they get on the cover of rolling stone and every other music magazine. they get tons of radio airplay. they become ROCK STARS.

then what? then the pearl jam syndrome will set in.

which means that vast multitudes of suburban grunge-preps with no musical taste whatsoever will claim DT to be the best, without actually noticing the music (other than the fact that it's loud). DT's concerts will sell out, not to those of us who appreciate and marvel at their musical talent & style, but to all those hairsprayed clique girls and crew-cut khaki-wearing wanna-be punks. DT music will be played at football practices at high schools nationwide. DT songs will be arranged for marching bands. copycat hack-prog bands will emerge from nowhere. shitty DT cover bands will emerge from nowhere. DT will respond to the success either by a) making every future release totally radio/mtv-friendly and sellout (a la aerosmith, who i still love in spite of that), or b) changing musical direction to some horrible fringe style to prove to the "true fans" that they're not sellouts (a la pearl jam). meanwhile, the "true fans"-- all the 'jammers and the many offline fans who know their shit-- will either be forgotten or feel lost in the crowd of "newbies." some of them will renounce DT. others will stick with them but ultimately be disappointed. DT will then fade away into obscurity and will be used as K-mart muzak and commercials for Windows 2005.

ok, that was absolute sci-fi _worst_case_, but you get my drift.

(in this vein, even though i'm not too crazy about pearl jam, i do feel bad for their early core fans who got swamped by success of this type. [and nirvana's "teen spirit" actually did get arranged for marching band.])

of course, i share your wish for DT to be more successful, but we're in the unfortunate position of wanting success-- but not *too much* success; know what i mean? we still want this to be a somewhat exclusive "club" (that sounds really snobby, i know) and talk somewhat intelligently about the nuances of DT's music, concerts, boots, personae, the pros & cons of audio tape, and, occasionally, anagrams. :) take a look at the green day newsgroups and you'll see what we want to avoid.

    it's a tough call, isn't it?

they really do deserve more recognition. but will "rock stardom" merely rob them of the respect of the very fans they're trying to reach? that's the modern rock band's universal dilemma. and there's no easy answer.

i mean, rush never achieved that status, thank god. that's pretty much how prog rock operates. it just isn't top-40 material.

maybe that's why it's so fucking cool.

    (too long, i know.)

    end of rant.
