Believe it or not, I got ACOS today and I'm writing about it ;).

It's AWESOME!! It is different from the Subcon version but it's still
great. I only heard it once (in the car). I'm listening to Love Lies
Bleeding now. It's cool. The intro to ACOS is awesome. I love that. Derek's
sound is a lot different from Moore's. I like it. Yeah, it's that organ
sound thing. Cool. The "Please don't go" is gone but the part is there,
LaBrie just doesn't say it :|. The Inevitable Summer is GREAT! (part VI -
an instrumental). And the end is different. LaBrie sang it that way in
Providence. I remember thinking that it was wierd (wait, Portnoy's
double-bass drumming on the end of Love Lies Bleeding. That's not in the
original is it? :) but it's the new ending. It will take some getting used
to from the Subcon version. It's very cool though. I like the artwork too.
(Perfect Strangers is on now. That was great in Providence too. It reminds
me that the first song I ever learned on bass was Knocking at Your Back
Door). So ACOS is here. Most excellent. Cool that Portnoy thanked "the
    on-line 'Yste-Jammers'."

    Thanks Dream Theater :)

Hey, folks! Long time no post. I, like all of you, are extremely
excited about the release of aCoS, along with some of the infamous cover
tunes. My question, though, is: what's going to happen to the rest of
the covers? Unfortunately, for some reason (even though it's "for the
fans", and we are prog fans) they managed to omit just about every one
of the covers that I actually wanted to hear! What is DT/Elektra doing
with the UK, Rush, Yes, Marillion, and Metallica tunes? I want them,
nay, need them, and I think you folks do too.
Elektra or DT could (like the Marillion fanclub) release a
special fanclub/ytsejam CD release of the remainder of the tunes, or
possibly a special/wide release of a video of the whole show. I know
this is just a pipe dream, but remember, we made aCoS a reality, and we
deserve this as well. Maybe some of you with DT connections could
inquire as to the status of the remaining tunes, and maybe we could do
another little petition, or if not organized, all email Elektra
separately. What do you guys think?

All I can say after hearing ACOS is WOW!!!! I am really impressed. As for Derek's playing, I thought he did a great job on ACOS. I haven't heard the entire album yet, just parts of Perfect Stranger and Funeral.

One more thing.... There were background vocals on ACOS. It caught me off-guard at first, but it sounded excellent.

I have the same problem. Even though I have 20Meg of physical RAM and it still wouldnt work. I havent tried it under 95 yet. For some reason it worked on the cheap 486 computers down in our lab (on a network and no sound cards so go figure). they only have 8 Meg ram and no hard drive. (Virtual mem runs off the server). It might just be a specific computer thing, Well, anyone else with any luck?

I became a Dream Theater fan when Pull Me Under got some radio play on (for you Chicago jammers) The Blaze (103.5). Or, what was the Blaze at the time. But anyway. I heard the song and wanted to buy it after the first listen but they would never say who it was by. Finally a friend of mine heard them announce who it was by and we both went the next day to get it. Ever since then, I've listened to something by DT everyday (not on purpose, just a coincidence). Well, enough with my boring story. Anybody else?

    Ed

PS: I used to make fun of other people when they would get obsessed with their favorite group and stuff. That's because i never was obsessed until DT came along.

Holy shit! That's just about all I've said out loud for the past hour or so. Okay, time to pick those nits:

The Bohemian piano part: Yes, it's noticeably different. However, it fits. It sounds like Derek just chose inversions of the original chords. Whatever he did, it sounds cool. And it's DT's version now.

LTS: Holy shit! LaBrie sounds just like Perry! It's unbelievable! The whole band really worked this one up good.

    Funeral/Love: Wow. 'Nuff said.

Zep Medley: I was hoping to hear more of The Rover, but hey, I didn't arrange the medley. It sounds great! Myung is really on top of it. When I started playing bass, I immersed myself with Zeppelin, and I HATE to hear cover bands that don't get Zep songs right - esp. the bass lines. John nailed it!

Turn It On Again: 1) I would have rather heard a diff. Genesis song. Maybe Lamb Lies Down, or something really prog. Oh, well. 2) TIOA is a good song, but there isn't enough of it. Maybe a verse or something. Oh, well, who am I to complain? It's still cool as shit.

DP & Dregs: I never heard the originals, but they sound really good.

ACoS: I heard the live version once, like a year and a half ago, and I don't remember anything but the length. So, I'm not missing anything like you guys are. But it sounds amazing to me! And the lyrics kill! I haven't read anything that good since Rush's Counterparts came out!

Gotta go. Time for class. Let me know what you think of this relatively new DT fan's analysis. Later. Carpe diem.

Well... I'm opening up for some flames here...but here's my thoughts on ACoS. :)

    I. The Crimson Sunrise WOW! This intro is incredible. The haunting accoustic guitar and tempting keys really set the mood for the song. Very very dark... moreso than the Subcon version we all know and love. The electric intro after the softer acoustic is very heavy. John just loves that crunch of his guitars. While slower then the original it is still incredible. John P. also adds some very nice licks right before the lyrics that, at least for me, are very emotional.

II. Innocence Better than the original. The words remain little changed with the imortant addition of some very nice vocal harmonies that sound beautiful. My only complaint would be with Mike's sound. His snare sound like he's using a coffee can as the snare! I know (most) everyone hates the triggered sound off of I&W, but even that would have sounded better than this thin hollow sound. It's masked enough during the heavier pasages but the slow sections make it really stand out.

III. Carpe Diem Again, same as the original, yet better. Several voice overs of the Carpe Diem poem read with a voice devoid of emotion. It sound like the school bully was forced to read in poetry class. They could have done better with the 'feel' of the voice overs. (sorry guys!) The music of this section is as good as, if not better, than the origianl. The 'don't go' is gone as we all knew, but the emotion is still there.

IV. The Darkest Winter This is the instrumential after the infamous first 'don't go'. Very similar to the Subcon version. Derek's keys tend to grate a little but this passage still rocks!

    V. Another World I will NEVER stop singing the Subcon lyrics in my head to this part. Mike has shifted this section from a sad look at Love betrayed to Age/Religion betraying him. The lyrics work as they are. Very stong in thier meaning but not sung with as much emotion as the Subcon version.

VI. The Inevitable Summer This is the final long instrumental section. Gone is the incredible scale work at 15:00 of the Subcon version but in it's place is a slower, more emotional solo that very well conveys the 'loss' of life that will be lamented in the last part of the song. I'll miss the more classical feel, but this is still great work.

VII. The Crimson Sunset Time to die my friend. A bitter man looks back at his life and urges his only son to seize the days before him, for soon he too shall be looking back at a life lived. Even without the empassioned 'don't go's' of the Subcon version this section works well. Some nicely sung voice overs of "gather your rosebuds while thee may". The song finally finishes off with a reprise of the eariler Crimson Sunrise accoustic guitar part. The sun rises again...

IMHO, John P. plays with more emotion than James sings. The sence of loss and urgencey is lost. Just my thoughts.

All the covers are great. My faves are Perfect Strangers and the Journey section of the medley. It's amazing how good James sounds singing that, as if he wrote it! Steve Perry watch out! :)

Well, sorry about the length and stepping on anyone's feellings...

Well, I just picked up ACOS. Now Dream Theater has four songs with the word "another" in it. Another Won, another day, another hand, and another world (part V of ACOS). They must like this word a lot.

Also, after hearing the live stuff from the Ronnie Scott's gig, I noticed the great quality. I then thought of Live at the MArquee and the great quality on that as well. But the quality is so great that it sounds like a studio recording instead of a live recording. I wish that it sounded "livelier."

Barfbag and Moon Bubbles are both pretty cool instrumentals (mostly Petrucci solos) that cap off To Live Forever when DT plays it live. Those are the actual titles.

I got ACOS today, $10.99 @ a local place. Not a bad place, either. Its called Holland CD and they've got the Silent Man single and the Lie Single and the Lost in the Sky boot. Which is a lot more than any localmusicland has.

i got out of school and was surprised to find that it was sold out everywhere in oakland so i caught a bus to squirrell hill and picked it up for $10 at the record exchange. after waiting a fucking hour for another bus, i'm finally home and i listened to ACOS.

i like the new intro, actually i like the whole thing although its missing some of my favorite parts from the old version. i have a feeling those parts are gone because they are the ones that kevin had the most to do with. i like the new version regardless, i just wish i werent so used to the old one now. i wish james had sung it more like the old way... the whole thing seems just a little slow (but definitely heavy) and james sings a lot of stuff a lot lower than i felt it would sound best.

anyway, anyone else notice how much it resembles fates warning's Ivory gate of dreams now? with the acoustic intro and outro it just hit me as being kinda similar. also the way its structured is a little similar.

i skipped the elton john track, but i like perfect strangers. it works for them. it really wizzes by though after ACOS which kinda lumbers just a tiny bit. the bass on the live stuff is a bit overpowering and its kinda hard to hear the keys most of the time. i think achilles last stand sounds really good. the whole zep melody sounds really cool. i love this cd. i love the big melody. this one's gonna be in the changer for a few months

Well, I got mine first thing this morning. Here are some comments...

    1. Anyone else notice Erotomania in the Crimson Sunrise?

    2. Overall, I was at first very disappointed. The song just seemed too slow, and they cut out my favorite parts. It's grown on me quickly, though. But I think I still prefer the Dance of Eternity version...

    3. Derek. Didn't care for his first solo at all (i believe it's the one in the Darkest of Winters.) The one near the end, though, was really good. I liked the sound a lot, and thought the solo was pretty moving...Not quite as good as Kevin's best (Bombay Vindaloo, OAMOT, Song for Eric) but I'm pretty biased about that I guess. I wish he'd done more on the cover songs, though.

    4. The Zeppelin medley is absolutely brilliant. They should've used some echo on James's voice, though. He didn't sound quite right (he sings great though)

    5. Myung is unbelievable. That part in the Darkest of Winters where he doubles JP's solo (I think Kevin played it too on DoE, couldn't make out whether Derek is in on it here) is out of this world...

    6. I don't care for the Journey song. Or Love Lies Bleeding.

    7. I wish Derek had been more active in the cover songs...his solo in ACOS left me wanting more, but there wasn't much more. `

I'm so happy! I ditched work for a bit at 2:00 and went out to Best Buy (Steve Johnson: you can get WDADU while you're there!) and they had about 8 of them. For $9.99! Yeah, like I wouldn't have paid $20 for it.

I gave it a listen here at work (PC-CDROM, headphones): It's a lot slower. But on the whole, the song sounds bigger and very emotional. Derek is wonderful. Right now, the part that sticks most in my mind is the intro and outro. WOW. That's wonderful!

Gotta go; I know what I'm doing tonight! (I just hope my stereo amp doesn't overheat.)

Well, I must say I'm impressed with the studio version of ACoS, but was expecting more out of the cover tunes. I honestly expected the boyz to interpret these classic songs with their own style, not play them note-for-note like the original artists recorded them. If I wanted to hear Love Lies Bleeding/Funeral For a Friend as it was orginally recorded, I could play "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

Not being as familiar with the other tunes (with the exception of those in the Big Medley), are my impressions accurate? Do the other songs mirror the original recordings, or do they take some creative license?

Supposedly, it's being released on Oct. 24. (Heh, 2 days before my birthday) Guest musicians: Sebastian Bach, Les Claypool (I can't remember if any others have been mentioned, but hey--- those 3 make a band right there!).

I really like this version of ACOS. I never did much like the vocal melodies on the DoE version.

I also think it's cool that James slightly emulates the style of the vocalists on the cover tunes while still keeping his own style.

My only complaint is "Perfect Strangers." I don't really think they did this song justice. To me, it doesn't "groove" hard enough. And the instrumental breaks (you know--- the "da da da, dadada, da da da" parts of the song) don't sound as nicely separated as on the DP version. Note, I'm not a DP fan, either.

My favorite cover would have to be "Carry on Wayward Son," it's really great.

    Hey All:

Well, I just got ACoS today and have to say that I am on the whole impressed. The layering of James voice is great and Its something I hope that they do more of in the future. As for Derek...does anyone else feel that he was mixed way to low on a lot of the song. At the end he finally does a really good solo (I dont remember exactly where...Ithink it was at the end of one of the instrumental sections.) You can actually hear the bass on some of the song. As for the covers..I listened to them and they really didnt do anything for me...I dont know maybe a few more listens will help. Take care all
