On the album release dates, it says that Alex's new CD will be released on
October 20 something. I vaguely heard a rumor (from the 'Jam?) that
Sebastian Bach was involved. I'm not sure though.

Fellow Dream Theater Fans,
I just purchased ACOS, and I must say that this is vintage Dream
Theater. It is quite clear that it was written in '89, because there are
several similarities to WDADU. The instrumentals variously placed
throughout the epic are memorable. There are some incredible keyboard
solos and there is one incredible portion when Myung and Petrucci double
each other at the 12:20 mark and it absoluetly mind boggling!!!!
As for the covers. . The Led Zeppelin medley is done very well
and the transitions are quite smooth. The Big Medley happens to have
some incredible songs and seems to be Dream Theater's homage to these
bands that helped them develop their style.
As a side note, Derek seems to be fitting into the makeup quite
nicely. With some various solos which is totally not from the Kevin
school of soloing. He has some incredible ability and I hope he remains
for a long time in the band.
See Ya . .

I was just wondering how everyone got into DT. The way I go into them was
a strange way. I was watching Head Bangers BAll on MTV and I saw an
awesome video. I had no idea what it was, but I loved it. At that time I
wasn't even into any type of music. I thought that they sounded great, so
much better than any other group on the show. Well anyway, the video I saw
was Take the TIme. I still wasn't convinced. Then the following week on
the BAll I saw the video of Pull Me Under. The moment I saw that video, I
knew that this group was for me. The next day I bought I&W and that album
was just mind boggling. I never heard a CD that awesome. Since then the
rest is history. I consider myself the biggest DT fan in the world. I'm
sure they're larger ones than me, but no one taht I know loves DT more than
me. Of course the only people that I know, that know Dream Theater are my
friends which I intoduced to their music to.

Um, unless I missed something, the .wav of EVE is NOT on Ed Polzin's Web
page as someone indicated here a few digest ago. What gives? Anyone know
where it's at?
Also, why did the band go with Prater again. From all the comments in the
past, it seemed as if the band hated working with him - not just Mike
because of the drum sound. I've never heard any explanation for why they
went to him again. Did I miss it somewhere?

Not many people like Mike?? This is news to me... My hubby drums, and I've
mentioned numerous times previously that Mike de-throned Neil Peart as his
drum idol. I have met many DT fans outside of the 'jam and have yet to meet
any other drummers who don't like Mike. Shouldn't there have been an IMO in

My sister recently returned from Carmel, wherein she looked up the Address/phone number for the Dream Theater in Monterey in the CURRENT phonebook:
the phone # is the same as listed before (408)-372-1331
but the address is different:
301 Prescott Ave, Monterey, CA 93940.
I looked it up on a map of the area, and it appears that Prescoot & Lighthouse intersect, and that the theater is probably at the corner (the block addresses seem to agree on the location.)
Just thot u mite be interested, although it may be a bit before I get any actual pictures :(
And I appear that my temp job will become full-time, and that I'll get to 'play' w/ computers most of the time; also means I'll probably be getting a new/another Email address.

Hi, my name is Neil Gallop, and I just joined the list last week.
------------------------------
The band I want to tell you about/get infos about is Shadow Gallery. They have just released their second album (Carved in Stone) here in Germany and it is just great. The German music press loved it, and the magazine Metal Hammer, quoting the US mag Prognosis, called it "the best album that Dream Theater and Queensryche never made".
If you have never heard of the band, get a listen soon, I'm sure you will love it.
If you already know the band, perhaps you could give me some more infos on them (other albums, demos, tours, history etc.).
I hope this entry won't start off another round of in-fighting, and that some of you will have you day brightened by a new listening experience. As for me, I'm off to my local CD dealer now, because ACoS is being released in Germany today, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you've all been writing about.

Just to add more info about HX-Pro... Hx-Pro is actually a real-time bias controlled by a IC that allows more highs by attenuating the signal when highs need to be prominent. The wonders of analog recording...
And to add my opinion... consumer Dolby NR really doesn't do a whole lot... I wouldn't actually record with Dolby C or B...
Something you should know about Metal tapes... Metal (Type IV) should be used mainly for master recordings. This is because the metal formulation tends to hold it's pattern stronger. Therefore if you try to use a Metal tape for general use, like say making a tape to listen to in your car and then in a week decide to put new stuff on there, it's gonna start to degrade the tape quality quickly because of the metal's resistance to change. This is the same thing that happens with DATs... they're not recommended to be used over and over again...

I called REH videos yesterday, and asked a guy what the release date was for Petrucci's instructional video. Well, somewhat of a disappointment when he said it has been pushed back 2 - 2-1/2 months. So it looks like it will be an early Christmas release (if the guy knew what he was talking about, which he probably did).

that's it people! i'm sorry!!! Rush doesn't suck. In fact, they are good musiciians. I just have posted that because everybody that talks about DT says that they are Rush pupils, and i don't agree with that. So, to everybody that might be offended, i'm really sorry!!! About Dt being a metal band, i said that because DT live is much "heavier" than in studio... If you heard the Portnoy's solo you will heard Pantera's and Slayer's songs, and that's metal... The only thing that wasn't metal in DT was Kevin's keyboard, but now with Derek.... Derek played with Alice Cooper and with Kiss, and that's metal... And if you heard Derek's solos live, you will note that the keyboard sound is similar to a very distorted guitar, and that's metal... By the way, Black Sabbath, the most heavy metal band, has keyboards in some songs (the early Sabbath's songs has Rick Wakeman on the K's). James silver voice bring back the early Ian Gillan and the early Robert Plant, from Deep Purple an Led Zep, that's is metal... Miyung influences are based in Steve Harris the Iron Maiden's bassist, and that's metal... and the last, but not the least, Petrucci's guitar on The mirror, Lie, Caught in a Web, etc is very distorted, because his guitar is tuned in low B, and that's (again) a Black Sabbath's idea, and that's metal... And for those to told me if i ever heard Wait for sleep, Another Day, Space-Dye VEst, i tell you: Have you ever heard Changes, Children of The Damned, Goodbye to Romance, and others metal ballads? Once again sorry to all Rush fans! I didn't mean to offend yourselves!!! Marcel

Someone mentioned the DT interactive file in the last Jam which reminded me of my problem with it. I was able to download it but I can't get it to run, it keeps telling my that I don't have enough memory. I have a Pentium 75 with 8megs of RAM and I had like 28megs of virtual memory set up and it still didn't run. Any idea just how much memory this thing takes?
I guess maybe I'll have to wait until I get my copy of Win95 since , supposedly, it doesn't deal with all of the crazy memory configurations like conventional mem, extended mem, expanded mem etc. It just uses straight line memory.
BTW - keep an eye out for my big ACOS review. I've been meaning to post it for about 1 week now but have never gotten around to it.

Well... I just wanted to let you all know that I'm back... well, I never really left, but have been incredibly busy w/ stuff around here...
For those of you new to Ytsejam, I'll introduce myself, for those of you who have been around here as long as I have (I've been here since Ytsejam 19) skip over this...
Anyway, I maintain the DT bootled discography, and one of the bigger DT web pages... (Elektra actually sort of has a link from their official DT page... they have a link, but it is incorrect). For just about any DT info, including the most recent copies of most files, you can check out http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~mikeb/dt.html (Yes, I did take the background from Elecktra... I liked it, and had to have it.. *grin*)
Next, I am one of the bigger collectors of boots and rare material... You can get a copy of my list at http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~mikeb/boots.html#index I do trade for blanks, but also love getting new material... Also, I do have a week or so backup of tapes to dub.
Lets see... what else... Well, I'd like to say that thanks to all of the musical discussion over this list, I am taking an intro to music class this semester...
Oh, for the person asking about names of instrumentals listed on the boot discog, all named instrumentals (Moon Bubbles, Pup (Puppies On Acid), Bardfbag, A Crack In The Mirror) are official names taken either directly from the a memeber of the band calling it as such, or from DT play lists from concerts... Also, Puppies on Acid did develop into Mirror...
Well, thats it for now... Anxiously awaiting ACOS... I am at least prepared to hear the official version (compared to DoE & aud tape) after hearing 2 different version from their NY/NJ shows...

I went to a few record stores yesterday, and implored a few of my friends to sell it to me a day early. It didn't work. =)
So, I went to Strawberries (who had the lowest price of any of the three I stopped at - I paid 6.99 for the tape, and 9.89 for the CD) at 10:05 this morning, grabbed them, got back in my car, drove home with it on, parked my car, and sat there for the duration. When ACoS ended, I turned the stereo off, and sat there, dumbfounded. =)
I feel like a different person - Seriously. What a performance. Man, I can't find the right words to describe how powerful it is...I haven't even listened to the covers yet, and won't for a little while...but, MAN - ACoS just kicked my ass. =)
And hey - even though I've only been "here" for a few months, do you know how proud I feel to be a part of a group that was actually thanked by the band? Unreal. I'm just wondering how many newbies we're gonna have show up after people figure out how to find us. =)
Anyway, I'll comment on the production when I sit down & listen to the CD at a later time...right now, I'm completely overwhelmed.
Kudos to the DT boys...and all involved here. =)
-Hairball, Dumbfounded, but never at a loss for words. <g>
p.s. As I finished typing this, there was a knock at the door - The "Letter Carrier" for my neighborhood had a package for me...it's my limited edition Heroes & Zeros Re-Issue! It's by a guy named Glen Burtnick - not that this has anything to do with DT, but, what a great day it's been so far! =)

(They were still on a cart, waiting to be put on display). The CD and cassette for ACoS were both on sale, so I picked up one of each! I ran out to the car and popped the tape in right away. I was not disappointed! The intro to ACoS gave me chills! I was awestruck! I think it's great that the guys acknowledge 'the Ytse-jammers' in the notes! Well, my CD player hungrily awaits this disk, so I gotta get outta here!

Well, let's see, I've been a lurker on this list for about 6 months, so I guess it's about time to post a letter. I just got ACOS today and I think it's great. I just have to get used to the new Keyboard player and the changes to ACOS (no pun intended). I have the Subconcious version and I've gotten so used to that that the new one sounds strange. I guess the only complaint I have about the new version is that it's slower than the live version. As for the other songs, I love 'em. And who the hell cares if the keyboardist played Bohemian Rhapsody different. He's in the band, which is more than others can say.

Yes, I to think Cynic kicks ass. And yes again, I think that the person that asked was right about them not being together any more. Here is a url for a Cynic home page since you asked: http://geom.umn.edu:8000/~bmeloon/music/bandinfo/cynic.htm
Someone was also asking about why WDADU and the Lie and Silent Man singles were labled as imports. Well as far as I know WDADU is not being produced in the US any more becouse Mechanic Records is not surporting the album in the US any more. The copy that I have is releaced by Mechanic but is made in Germany, there for it is an import. As for the two singles, they are both European releaced cds by EastWeat and there for also imports.
AAAAHHHHH I have work and class till three today and ACOS is taunting me at the local CD store here in Gainesville.

Well, I thought it was kinda interesting :). You know, sometimes we can get off the subject a little on the 'Jam and there may come a point when it's best to take things private, but one of the things I love about the Ytsejam is the diversity. If it's metal tapes or the rhythm at the start of The Mirror. Sometimes we talk about other bands. I like it. I always read the whole 'Jam. Sometimes there's stuff that's of no interest at all. I skip it.
Thanks :) --Marc Respass

Damon,
(No offense intended of course) That's the rock attitude I'm talking about. These aren't classical compositions with written out parts that have every note in an exact spot. Using the words "right" and "wrong" is what I mean. Sometimes it doesn't make sense to change a part when covering it. But I still think of many rock songs in the same way I think of jazz songs. In jazz you get a lead sheet. It has chord symbols and a melody on it. You interpret the melody how you want and improvise the accompaniment based on the chord symbols. That might mean playing a Bossa on a traditionaly swing tune. I feel that way about a lot of rock songs. Sometimes, of course, you shouldn't change the song too much because you lose the song. You were talking about Bohemian Rhapsody. What'd he do? A chord substitution? I can't believe that he played a completely different part that wrecked the song (of course, I'll find out in a couple hours :D).
I haven't listened to Yes in a long time. Where can I find the version of Heart of the Sunrise with T.Kaye playing? I'd like to know what he does to it.

Well, I don't know if it was mentioned but Alex's solo CD is called 'Victor' and is set for release on October 24th. I got this from the online New Release list.

I was able to download the interactive, and run it at work (90 Mhz Pentium, 32M RAM, 4M PCI ViperPro), however if I remember correctly, I had to set my video from 16M down to 256 colors, or something like that. At home (60Mhz Pentium, 8M RAM, 2M PCI Diamond Stealth), it ran without modifications to video. (Both machines ran at 1024x768 resolution)
I think the problem is with the windoze resource management. I'd try cranking down the video as a first attempt. It is a cool little interactive (sound and pictures), but I wouldn't sacrifice my firstborn if I couldn't get it to work. : )
Good Luck,
&E
ps. Picked up ACoS this morning. Reactions forthcoming.....

Hello Jammers,
Covers ------ I've read a lot of the complaining recently about the covers DT did at the London Uncovered concert. I don't know why, IMO the whole point of a band doing covers is to provide a new insight into the song. So what if it isn't a note for note reproduction. I didn't purchase Magna Carta's Pink Floyd tribute for this reason. It was too much rehash and contained few interesting new ideas. Plus they messed up the vocals on Us and Them, one of my favorite Floyd songs.
ACOS Prices ----------- I just purchased the disk about an hour ago from Record and Tape Traders. They were selling it for $9.88. Not bad at all, and they had a whole box of them. I won't get to listen to it until this evening. I also picked up Phish's A Live One, I borrowed it from a friend a while back and really enjoyed it.
WWW Pages --------- I am working on an unsigned bands and progressive metal part for my homepage. I should have part of this up and running in a couple of weeks. I want to have it working before I do the Ytsejam progressive metal music compilation that I am working on. The page will contain reviews of material that I have by the artist, links to their WWW page, if any, plus general band information and ways to pick up the album. I will be focusing on unsigned bands and those on independent labels, and I will contact all of the bands I intend to include if I can locate their addresses in my paperwork and albums. Should be interesting. I'll post the URL to the list when I get it running.
Later,
Mike Backof
