I won't comment on Jason's ability as a bass player except to say that
his solos were the most enjoyable solos during Metallica's last tour,
from a crowd-wide standpoint. I WOULD like to say that Jason is one
of the nicest and most considerate "major" musicians I've ever met.
When a member of a band of Metallica's stature says he'll bring
something for you at the next show, doesn't write it down, and
remembers to bring it anyway, I take note. And ironically, Jason
isn't the Metallikat I know best; Kirk is......

Jason's lack of presence on the JUSTICE album (he simply wasn't mixed
in; this was a band reaction after Cliff's death) is a matter of
public record; see the YEAR AND A HALF videos, where this is mentioned
    (on tape 2).

    >>> ..and besides, you need a cassette deck that will record in metal, >>> and playback in metal to get the full effect...

Well, just a small point to keep those on the YTSEJAM on the cutting edge of all aspects of recorded sound. "To record in metal" - yes. "To playback in metal" - NO !!

The bias signal can be (very) loosly thought of as the signal that "activates" or "wakes up" the particles on the surface of the tape allowing them to capture the sound that is being recorded. Metal tapes require a more intense strength bias signal in order to allow the recording process. The ability to generate this "extra strength" bias signal is the capability that is required in cassette decks that can deal with the recording of metal tapes.

However, the bias signal is only used to record tapes. For the playback of a metal tape, you only need to be able to set the EQ to 70ms (as opposed to 120ms). Two EQ settings generally come with every cassette deck on the market, even if the deck ties the EQ setting to a single switch that just says BIAS.

This is why a good question to ask when you are purchasing a car stereo system is "Why does this car deck really say it's metal capable ??" If you get anything close to a correct answer, it is a decent sign that you can trust the salesman (a bit more).

BTW, this insight was gained from a class at the Crane school of music which is part of Potsdam College in "really upstate" New York. Have seen a few postings from those at school up in the tundra. Would definately recommend classes from Gary Galo, if he is still teaching them. He teaches classes on studio recording and classes about stereo equipment. Very decent guy and a good way to pad the cum.

My casette deck records with HX-Pro (which sounds great and doesn't require any special tape equipment for playback) in Metal, Crome, and Normal modes to match what kind of tape is put in. Playing Metal tapes with a tape deck that supports Metal tapes is best, but is not really required for it to get a good sound. I've played a Metal cassette I record for someone in a tape deck that didn't support that type and it still sounded great. The fact that was recorded with HX-Pro and Dolby B Noise Reduction had an effect on the recording as it will with the Subconscious dubs I will be doing.

Those were my opinions of the sound quality based on what I've recorded for myself and my family. If I had a choice to something I recorded on a Normal tape or a Chrome tape to something I recorded on a Metal tape, I'd choose the Metal tape. Mainly because if I have to listen to a recording on tape, I feel that the sound quality of the Metal tape is worth it to me. If those who want a copy don't think the difference is that big of a deal, then send me whatever type you want.

    > And, as most of us know, play back your CrO2 tapes with your > playback deck set to NORMAL bias. You'll hear more highs! =) > > (Matter o' fact, when I was making the labels for my band's demo > -which are on CrO2 tapes- I put "Normal Bias" on the labels. Why? > Well, I'd like to hear it reproduced as it was recorded...or close to > it...cassettes are still noisy, what can I say?)

Some tape decks, like mine, select the tape bias automatically, so that when you put in a tape of a particular type, it will show up as that type and can't be switched unless you cover the holes on the top -- that little hole to the inside of the write-protect tab (for CrO2 tapes and Metal) and the center holes (for Metal tapes).

If I recorded something on a CrO2 tape, the tape deck shows I can turn it up to 3db on the Peak Level Meter. Any higher and the sound would most likely be distorted. If it were a Metal tape, it shows the recommended limit at about 6db. Normal bias shows it at 0db.

Tape decks that have Automatic Metal, like my car tape deck for example, will turn on Metal playback for CrO2 and Metal tapes.

To whoever wrote that message about Rush sucking, you have another thing coming. It is one thing that we all like Dream (we wouldn't be prescribing to this account), but for someone of your ignorance to down play the best power band to play to this day and age, is just plain stupid. If you can tell me another 3 person band that plays the same way as Peart, Lee, and Lifeson, then you can start writing trash about them, but until then, keep those ridiculus comments of the internet.

    Three things.

    1. A Change of Seasons is INCREDIBLE! I received a copy of the promo CD today, and it completely blew me away! I'd never heard a boot with ACoS on it, but this version is just great! The acoustic introduction reminds me a lot of "The Killing Hand" and Rush's "A Farewell to Kings".

The covers are great - they sound a lot like the original band, except DT's versions are BETTER! <g> Oh yeah, there's a little part on one of the covers (either "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin") where James is out of key - but it is hardly noticeable. An impressive job for a live concert.

The art on the CD is really neat. Someone complained about the simplicity of the cover, but I think it's fine.

Oh yeah, and I don't think Derek sucks <g>. I heard bad reviews of his live performances, but everything on the CD is virtually flawless. His style is somewhat different than Kevin's, but just as complex. I look forward to hearing him play some of the old music. Acoustic Dreams comes out at the end of the month - I can't wait!

The production quality on the live material is great as well. I don't think I've heard a better live recording. The first time I listened to the title song, it sounded like James was singing in a tunnel, but that feeling has faded. I think it's fine.

And the liner notes include the line:

Many thanks must be given to the on-line "Ytse-Jammers" who helped make this recording finally become a reality.

That was the COOLEST thing I've EVER read in CD liner notes!! <g> But WHAT was that supposed to mean? Would some of you care to enlighten the rest of us? Thanks!

    2. Charlie's voice: I heard REALLY bad things about him from the Ytsejam. But when I bought WDADU (three months ago) it wasn't too bad. In fact, I sort-of liked it. It's completely different than James's. But he can't hit the final note on the phrase "I am the killing hand......" and it sounded awful.

Overall, I don't mind listening to Charlie at all. It's a good thing that they got James later (he's obviously much better), but I like some of the songs from WDADU. I'm now waiting to hear "Status Seeker" with James. Isn't this maybe going to be on one of Mike Bahr's next projects ("When Dream and James Unite" or something like that?)?

    3. Space-Dye Vest is my FAVORITE DT song. In fact, it's one of my FAVORITE songs by ANY band, ever. I can play it on the piano, almost as well as Kevin. Well, not quite. I put a lot of emotion into it, but Kevin's is better. I think it's one of the most under-rated songs I've ever heard - the song is just WONDERFUL!!! That song is the main reason I'm unhappy Kevin left - I want more songs like that!

Well, I've rambled, and rambled, and rambled... now it's your turn <g>!

Hey everyone! I was browsing through an on-line cd store, and they have acos, and it's available now! It is also on sale for $10.99 and they have a two day shipping option. They also have a long list of DT imports for sale. The name of the store is CDNow. I'm kind of new to the internet, so i'm not exactly sure where it is. I got to it through Ed Polzin's DT page. Before I speak, I want to just babble a little. I finally have seen why I subscribed to this list-serv. I made my little speech about Rush and music, etc. That was fine. I check my e-mail, and I see a huge list of people that want to talk about ethnic music and drumming. That's what I signed on to this list for. not to try to trash other bands, and determine why DT is on such a level. I'm finally communicating with people who are interested in expanding their musical horizons. I remember that barrage of verbal filth that went on from about 683 to 740. That kind of garbage ruins the integrity of this discussion group. Anyways, now that I've been reaffirmed in my belief in the "public-chat forum," this whole mailing list has become the coolest group I'm subscribed to!! To those that left me mail, I'll get back to all of you. I've got lots of blanks. Second, I just got the new Tribal Tech CD. For you guitarist, it Scott Henderson's project. This stuff is completely incredible!!! To best sum it up, it's "Erotomania meets John Coltrane." Very "edged" music, but with the bulk of the chops being devoted to solos, instead of steady rhythms. I've seen these guys live a few times. To be perfectly frank, no band (even DT), comes close to such an incredible live performance. All these guys are respected players in their fields, and the music they make together is beyond description. Check them out. If you have to take out a loan to get disks, or steal them from a little old lady, do it. The new one is "Reality Check." Second, I've got a little note of no importance. If you've got "The Downward Spiral" (NIN), play the title track (second to last). Listen to the guitar part. Now, listen to that minute or so of "The Mirror", right before the segue into "Lie." Do you notice an incredible similarity? I though it was cool when I first realized it. That's it, I've made my peace. To those that asked, you're tapes are as good as sent.

My sister's mother-in-law lives in Carmel, which for those you who don't know, is just adjacent to Monterey. The towns are about 3 hours drive to the California coast, so they (my sister & brother-in-law) go there quite often. Since both my sister & brother-in-law are both camera buffs, among other things, I have asked them to go get a few shots of the real Dream Theater. If they get some good pictures, I'd be willing to pass them on to those Y'Jammers that have access to a descent scanner (I don't), and maybe we could see the real Dream Theater on some of the Web pages.

Question: what is the best form for scanning: prints (glossy or matte) or slides, color or B&W.

Please Email me directly, or put it on the Jam if you think others would be interested in this info. Thanks.

    Hi all!

I get the feeling that just any DT fan prefers LaBrie over Dominici, but I do think it is unfair to flame the poor guy. He is a capable musician and I wouldn't mind if I were asked to join his band or vice versa. Besides, he IS a lot better than a lot of people out there who claim to be singers! But the teeming millions being the way they are won't think a lead singer is any good unless he has stage presense, which, unfortunately Dominici did not. (from what I hear)

Of course, Kevin James LaBrie came along, and no one can touch him, IMHO.

There are mixed feelings on Sherinian. Some people love him to death, but others really would rather have Kevin no-Moore back. C'mon, guys, he went to Berklee too, and you gotta be good just to be considered for admission. Sure, he's fucked up here and there, quite blatantly, but it's unrealistic to expect anyone not to fuck up occasionally. It is well known that LaBrie misses notes here and there. Petrucci flubs a note on the intro to PMU on DoE, and you can hear the crowd make a muted "I just got hit in the 'nads" sound.

DT's standards are very high. I don't expect them to hire some second- rate keyboard player. They wouldn't have hired him if he was deserving of some of the negative comments I've heard. I haven't heard ACoS yet, :( but I know that I will not be disappointed.

    hi all,

it's late, I just came from work; so Io'm really pissed and want to flame some body :)

I'm a more DT fan then a Rush fan. yeah I'm one of those "newy" fans who thinks Rush is the band who became famous for Tom Sawyar, and I only have the Chronicles. The reasons for it are- !) I'm a guitarist and I kinda get lost with Alex's sound and note selection....maybe couple of more years of listening to jazz phrasing would make me understand/appreciete his playing. 2) as you might have guessed I'm not a really "educated" musician/listener. so all these "new" time sigs are kinda hard for me to understand though I know they are really cool. ( the reason I love DT is for their a bit more grovvier than Rush...I might be wrong on this since I haven't heard a whole lot of Rush stuff....this same reason why i didn't really dig the first Dt WDADU that much...Portony was really scarry!!)

But I love Rush because of the kind of feel or mood they creat in songs like TS and Subdivisions....and I LOVE the sound of Peart. even a deaf can listen to any song and recognise how good he is.(IMHO)

my thought about music is if you don't like somebody then maybe you're not in his level of musicianship let it be rap or let it be death metal. if you don't like it then don't listen to it and let who enjoys it just enjoy it. if we liked everything then the world wouldn't have been so much interesting would it?????

One last thing ....is there any list for Pink Floyd out there?? if anybody knows can you pass the address to it ??? thanks a lot in advance.

sorry for the long letter but just had to say something about peaple flaming all these different types of music.

And those who enjoy all the variations, keep listening and pass it to others if you happen to stumble into something good. I bet there's a lot of people in here who'ls appreciate that.

thanx again and until next time

    have fun.

Can I just say, that Derek did make a very big error, at least in my mind, on one of the covers on ACOS. It's theoretically correct, but notewise, it's wrong. On Bohemian Rapsody, (I know I spelled it wrong), at the end, where the piano part comes in, he has that part all wrong. Iknow this because I remember the Queen version. I have this amazing talent of knowing songs exactly as they sound, every note, every part, and can tell when somebody is varying a part. Derek does not play the Queen song exactly right. But, who cares besides me? I'm just being anal retentive anyway, I know, and you don't need to flame me. I just have this bad taste when I know that somebody isn't doing a cover song exactly right, and being a keyboard player myself, I think I come down even harder on keyboard players, and especially when those keyboard players replace other keyboard players. Hell, you should hear what I think of Tony K from Yes as compared to Rick Wakeman. It's not pretty, especially during Heart of the Sunrise, "Damn it, you're playing the whole thing wrong."

To the one who asked for info...

Well, they signed to East/West Records, then shortly thereafter scratched the deal...then they were again searching for a label...then Metal Blade came along and the Cowboys signed with them...then Dane left and the band technically "broke up" for a short bit...they left Metal Blade...then they resigned to a better deal with Metal Blade...Dane wants to do other things, but he "may" be on the album, depending if they find another guitar player before it or not...last I heard, a new Galactic Cowboys' album is due out early next year...

BTW, don't quote me on this! The deal with them has changed so much that it's hard to keep up with current information...

Since it's that time of year again when a lot of people are joining (or rejoining) the list, I thought I'd answer this on the list (in case there are some new people on the list who need the info).

Lots of "new" subscribers as school gets underway again (we're up to 971 subscribers), so it's time for an update on the Ytsejam shirts.

Jason will start taking orders for the next shirt sometime in October (he's waiting for all the students to come back). Keep an eye on the 'jam--that's where he'll be posting the announcement.

So be patient--you'll be able to order shirts in a few weeks :)

    Hello all ....

In an effort to start the rework of my Dream Theater pages, as well as add a whole DT on the Net section to the FAQ, I am compiling a list of all the info about DT on the Net I can find. Below is the list I have so far. I know that some of the addresses may be wrong, and I may be missing some. SO here is what I want you to do. If your page is already there and there is messed up info, mail me. Also, if your page is there and all the info is right, just send me a quick note with your email address, so I can add that in. So I can have a maintained line or soemthing. If your page, ftp site, etc is missingplease send me:

Title: URL or ftp site: Maintained by: You <you@email.com>

We are hoping to add this to the next FAq, so please respond as quickly as possible. Thanks alot

    Ryan

    Hey all.

Regarding Steve in Lincoln Park: Almost every Best Buy I go to has WDADU in stock. Oddly enough, it's always labeled as an "import." I'm out in Downer's Grove, but I think all of them have it. Also, that big book/CD store across Michigan Ave. from Watertower (can't remember the name) has it, as well as the Silent Man single.

I asked the dude at Best Buy if they were getting ACOS in, and he said "Oh, I'm sure we will. We got their last album the day it came out." I hope so. We'll see.

    Later! Glenn
