I just had the best day at the record store. I went to Newbury Comics in
Shrewsbury just to see if they had Rush - Permanent Waves in. Usually they
have a very small selection of Rush. Today, They had almost everything and
almost everything was $7.99 brand new! I've been buying Rush discs used to
try to rebuild my collection on CD. I've been paying $6.99 used. So I was
psyched. I got PW, AFWTK, and 2112. Then I checked the singles for DT and
got the Lie single and The Silent Man single. Lie has an edited Lie, SDV,
To Live Forever - an excellent studio version. Different from Subcon and
much better sounding. Also a live Another Day. The Silent Man single has
The Silent Man, Take the Time (demo version) and Eve. So I'm feeling pretty
happy now :). Just wanted to share that.

I've seen a lot of talk about Subcon dubbing sites. I'll gladly
offer my humble stero to the service of fellow Ytsejammers! I'm in Omaha,
NE and have both Music To Be Heard, the Kevin Moore demos and Subconcious.
I'm calling the mix Images and Dreams and it comes complete with
cover and and jacket. I just love MS Publisher! :) I mailed one copy to a
guy in Canada I met on IRC in return I'm getting the Majesty demos and other
stuff.
Just mail me if you guys in the Midwest need either of these and we
can work out the details.

Hi everyone!
I'm fortunate to have received a promo copy of ACOS yesterday, a few days
before the Sept.19 Canadian release date.
Although this isn't the first time I've hear ACoS, this studio version
absolutely smokes! Words can't describe it.
I think a lot of you jammers will really get into the covers, especially the
Elton song. I remember flaming a guy who was cutting down Elton a few
months ago. I'd love to here from him after he hears DT's version of
Funeral/Love.
To to the jammer who quoted a Journey lyric from "Lovin',,". Yes, that part
is in there! The Zep medley is cool as well.
Actually, the whole CD smokes! You jammers be the judges!
Make sure you guys read the "thank-you" part in the credits. I don't want
to ruin it, but I know you will all be impressed.
BTW, I have throughly enjoyed all the flames towards the guy who made the
idiodic Rush comment. I was going to flame him myself, but I can't top some
of the comments I've read. Keep up the good work!
Enjoy ACos! I look forward to hearing everyone's comments.

Whenever I mention that "Bulgarian" music thing, people usually laugh.
After I play it for people, you would be surprised at the numbers of
awestruck individuals. If you really do want the stuff, and you're not
being a wise-ass (the more progressive the listener, the less I doubt
their sincerity) then just send me an e-mail at dgallis@mailbox.syr.edu.
AND... If any of you doubt the truth to the ethnic music thing, I
suggest you pick up Orpheus Ascending, by a Bulgarian clarinetist named
Ivo Papasov. You will not (I repeat, will NOT) find a more complex style
of music. Furthermore, they can play to it themselves. I grew up in a
very Greek family (none of the pedophile jokes and bar-of-soap humor, if
you will). With many percussionists in the family, I learned quickly
that 4/4 isn't all there is. Even when these prog bands start doing 7/8
or 5/4 or 13/8, they can't even touch the rhythmic complexity of these
ethnic bands. Tim Alexander of Primus sites this Bulgarian Wedding Band
(Ivo) as being a great inspiration.
As long as everyone else is talking about converts, I have one of
my own to write about. My dad grew up with groups like Cactus, Kansas
and Zappa. He slipped away from this when he got his masters in music
performance. Nowadays, he's really getting into the new-music that's
coming out. How into it? He saw nine Inch Nails in Albany, and Pantera
in Utica (NY). Not bad for a 49 year-old!
His favorite new band is, obviously, Dream Theatre. He loves
riffs. More with his musical background, he also appreciates the musical
abilities of the band. Petrucci doesn't just solo his ass off. My dad
pointed out that "This guy is up there soloing over changes and odd
times. All these other grunge-crap (him, not me) groups like G'nR and
the like solo over the same fricken changes that people have been
soloing over since blues can into being." Etc. Etc. He really gets off
to the fact that these young guys (!) can go up there and pull off
incredible feats of skill, and yet sound like a band that's so deep into
the pocket that you can't even grab down far enough to get them. He gave
my copy of LIT to a bunch of friends (one at a time, of course). You
would not believe how many local musicians just watched it and shook
their heads in disbelief. And these guys have been playing for 30
years.
Anyway, I ramble on. I'm looking forward to ACoS like the rest
(I'm hoping a friend of mine at a local music store can hook me up with
that and other goodies). Further, I'm looking forward to seeing Mike's
drum clinic in Syracuse. It's interesting. I know lots of people that
are going, but I'm the only drummer in the group. That, in itself, says
something about the musically of Portnoy's drumming.

obvious DT merchandise have enough free time to dub me some old Majesty
stuff? Kevin Moore stuff? I can play to the stuff on the marketed CD's
(and I busted my ass off to do it), and I'm interested in seeing just how
the band evolved to where they are now. Anything would much appreciated.

Well - I hope my "Cygnus" shows up soon... My friend got his and I heard
it. I have to say i'm very disappointed. I wish Mike would have put the
information on the dropouts in his original "Cygnus" update instead of
waiting until people ordered the CDs... This is a real pet peve of mine.
Also, originally the quality of "Cygnus" was said to be "beyond
comparison - better than Pinkpop and Rush 'n' Roulette '92". I own R'n'R
'92 and Cygnus sounds terrible compared to this one. I don't mean to
sound like i'm flaming but it is not even my opinion that "Cygnus" sounds
far worse than Rush 'N' Roulette '92. This is an obvious fact.
We did a side by side on the same stereo and also used headphones.

Those of us who have been lucky enough to obtain promo copies of ACoS,
please, please do what others here have suggested (beat me to it, guys
:)) and BUY a copy at your favorite store. I'm planning on buying
at least one and hopefully two copies; when all this is over one copy
will live at Atlanta's Wreck Room club. If we can't get airplay,
we'll take what we can get, and the folks there are cool.
--Speaking of airplay, though, we should all call our local rock
stations to request one of the covers from ACoS. "Perfect Strangers"
or "Funeral/..." are both excellent choices, and even the two medleys
would be well-received, if a bit long. This could be a good chance
for DT to "break" into the mainstream view -- we owe it to them not to
waste the opportunity. :)

Okay, now DT (kinda) stuff: After I heard that I Mother Earth was openning for DT on the first leg of the US Awake tour, I went out and bought "Dig." It rules. It's, a two words, progressive punk, which I just ate up, given that my very favorite bands include Rush, DT, Bad Religion, and No Use For A Name.
Anyways, I live in Phoenix, so by the time they got here Fates was openning. Don't get me wrong, I love Fates and they kicked ass, but I was dissapointed that I didn't get to see IME.
So, if anybody saw them in concert, has their only CD, or knows anything about what they are planning for the future, please give me some info.

What Bob Rock _really_ did for Metallica was to actually PRODUCE that album. Nearly every member of the was quoted as saying that Flemming Ramussing was "more of an engineer than a producer." I also distinctly remember reading that Jason said he was present for all mixes on the black album so what happened before didn't happen again...in fact, one of the reasons the band chose Bob was because they heard "Dr. Feelgood" by Motley Crue (on eMpTyV), and wanted that kind of "thump."
Now, I'm *not* saying Jason's a great bassist, at all...but Bob Rock didn't teach him how to play bass - doesn't he play guitar anyway?

FYI - Words from the great audio god, Jim Gallagher:
"Audio cassettes are the lowest form of audio life...[however,] ..in terms of quality, the difference between Chrome & Normal is monumental...the difference in quality between Chrome & Metal isn't quite as vast."
..and besides, you need a cassette deck that will record in metal, and playback in metal to get the full effect... And, as most of us know, play back your CrO2 tapes with your playback deck set to NORMAL bias. You'll hear more highs! =)
(Matter o' fact, when I was making the labels for my band's demo -which are on CrO2 tapes- I put "Normal Bias" on the labels. Why? Well, I'd like to hear it reproduced as it was recorded...or close to it...cassettes are still noisy, what can I say?)
