I'm sorry, but that has to be one of the most inane statements I have
heard on the 'Jam yet. There would be absolutely no way I would listen to
DT if they were just 'another metal band.' I'm sure that most people here
listen and love DT so much because of their progressive music, not just
because of their talent and metal sound. There are plenty of metal bands
that have very talented musicians, who just write BORING straight-forward
music. DT is definitely not one of these.
I can understand if someone says they don't like Rush, because they don't
like their sound. But if someone tells me that Rush sucks musically, then I
know they have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. There is a
BIG reason that a lot of DT fans on the 'Jam also like Rush.
PROGRESSIVE MUSIC!!!! (for lack of a better term)

Just few words to say that I disagree with the guy who try to sell its copy
of "Subconscious" at the highest price as possible. Of course, it is a mean
to choose the "lucky" guy who will get its copy of this cd but I don't think
it is fair... Making money with its favorite band is not exactly what we can
expect from the fans.
But it is just my opinion and I don't want to blame this guy.

well even though i said in my post that i dont have time for trades, i got

i dont want to prevent anyone from having access to this tape, so i thought
maybe we could set up a tape tree like jen did with the kevin moore tape

This guy is an absolute moron to say that rush sucks!!! what a bonehead.
HOw can he say that DT is not progressive? Has he been living in a paper
bag that he can't find his way out of? IDIOT IDIOT IDIOT. Sure, DT has
some heavy stuff, but come on. The only positive thing in his message is
that "DT is the best ..." Someone shoot him or something.
NOw that I am done slamming him for all of us, Make sure to listen to
EVERON. Excellent. They are a bit toned down from DT, but have the sound
of DT, Rush, Kansas, Yes, etc. Incredible album. It is called FLOOD. NOt
their first. I have not heard their first album, But Jason (jsg140@psu.edu)
is getting it soon and I will be able to hear it. Jason told me that he is
willing to dub. Mail him if you want to hear EVERON. You'd be doing
yourselves a huge favor!!

You know I'm really surprised at all of the back lash concerning the "Rush
sucks" post. There's no way that the minute I finished reading that post that
I felt some of the Jammers would see the need to respond! I'm really serious
here.
I can't believe some of us wasted our time. I figured we'd all just write
that off to some gross, sick error. I mean, if someone wrote in saying "DT
sucks" would we spend time telling them they're dain bramaged? Would we?
Anyway.....I am having a tough time finding ANY second hand store or other
here in Chicago that has a promo copy of ACOS. One guy even said, "We don't
buy that kind of stuff" (while he had four Rush discs in his bin). I am also
having trouble finding WDADU. Anyone in Chicago's Lincoln Park area that can
help me out?
Also, I had no idea Fates' new disc _Cahsing Time_ was a compilation.
It kind of bummed me out. I decided to get _Perfect Symmetry_ instead. VERY
COOL!!!

howdy all...this is my 1st post...hope it goes thru....
been hearing a lot about the favorite and least favorite dt moments.
fave moments: opening drums of 6:00; "so you tell me 'trust me', i can trust
you, as far as i can throw you"....this will sound weird, but kev's keys in
"lie" give a sort of seductiveness; learning how to correctly play "waiting
for sleep".
least favorites: lido beach, ny @malibu. the song was "learning to live",
last song. piano break at approx. 8:11; well, derek absolutley, totally,
FUCKED up!! i mean, it died! he stopped, and just started the break over
again. all i remember was seeign james coming out with eyes the size of
platters. bummer. man, i miss kevin. i really hope that "acos" kicks ass like
i keep hearing...
questions: anyone knows what's in the "awake plus bonus cd"?? i might be able
to get it at the wall (binghamton, ny) for $45. just wondering.....
anyone interested in a copy of "consicously unreal"? i really hate it....is
everyone's copy of it that bad?? the quality blows. if i were on crack, i'd
try to trade it for a copy of "subconscious", but i think i know better. too
bad i signed on to the jam after it came out (hey mike, by the way if you see
this, my check's on the way for acoustic dreams).

Hi Jammers,
I'm the guy who posted a message a few days ago with ACOS CD's for sale.
I was only able to buy 3 of the CDs when I went back to music store - and I
had about 10 people email me wanting a copy. So I had the difficult task
of narrowing it down to which 3 guys get it. Congrats to James, Trey, and
Andrew.
I'm glad to be able to give something back to the 'Jam. I've certainly
benefitted from others input, and it's nice to return the favor.
Somebody brought up the comment about those of us who bought or got promo
copies - that we should all make sure to buy a copy. Speaking as someone
who has a promo copy, I'm definitely going to buy at least two "real" ACOS's
and give them as Christmas presents. That'll help support the BOYZ (who
were cool enough to put ACOS out for US) and spread the popularity of the band.
I would expect all of us folks who got promo copies to do the same.
Speaking of air drums, I keep a set of drum sticks in my truck and I pound
on the steering wheel with them whenever I get stuck in traffic (it happens
a lot in the Washington DC area). It's been great fun except when I broke
one of my heat/AC vents with a mis-hit. And I'm a bassist! Just when
traffic gets ugly on the way home from work and I start to stress out -
VOILA! Stick in some AWAKE and pound the crap out of my steering wheel.
No more stress.
For the record, I disagree with the negative comments about the production
quality of ACOS. The studio version of ACOS sounds great - and the quality
of the covers stuff is terrific, especially considering it's a live
recording. I've heard much worse live recordings, and can't think of any
better ones off the top of my head.
ACOS is awesome! I especially like the covers medly - but that's no
suprise since I'm a big fan of most of the bands in the medley (Journey,
Dregs, Kansas).
Thanks to those of you keeping us up to date on FW and GC. I'm a big fan
of both bands, so it's nice to hear about what's going on.
Also, thanks for the report on the MP drum clinic in Houston. Sounds like a
great time.
Rush sucks? Give us a break. Rush is a great band.

Actually, I think more people on this list LOVE the song rather than dislike
it. Personally, I think it is a good song and very emotional, but it's not a
Dream Theater song--it's a Kevin Moore song. Not that this is a bad thing,
but I don't think it should have been put onto Awake AFTER the album's
logical conclusion <ie Scarred>. But most people seem to really love it
<just check out the song polls>. What do I know? :)

Hi all,
Got a little frustrated today. I called a local music store to see
if they ordered ACOS. They said they are expecting it on
Tuesday and the guy said he is going to hold two copies for
himself because he loves the band......well, one thing led to
another and I expect to see him on the list soon.
So......being the persistent person I am, I called another store
located near a college in the area and asked when they were
expecting ACOS.....the reply I got was "hold on a second,......I
think we have it in stock" WHOA.......I thought, I'll be there in 10
minutes........until......he said "we have it but I can't sell it till
Tuesday". Frustrated, I offered everything except my first born to
him to get a copy, to no avail. I asked if he had a promo and he
said YES!!!!! I said, I'll buy that from you and he said it's not for
sale....they can't sell them, they have to give them away.....I said
I'LL TAKE IT!!! He said, can't do, the store owner loves DT and
he's keeping it............oh well.........I guess I'll have to wait till
Tuesday now..............
Sorry, I had to get my frustrations out.........maybe I'll go in
person and see if I can swindle it out of them tonight!!!! Further
updates to come....

Let's give a great big THANKS to Mike Bahr for both making the Subconscious
CD and for giving the green light to this mini-project. (I sort of figured
Mike would say okay judging from his past remarks, but it's better now
that he's given his blessing to this. :)
Just to make life easier, I'll keep a master list of all the dub sites
for Subconscious. These sites probably won't be open forever, and I'm
presuming that each person will run his/her site differently depending on
what's easiest. I'm keeping notes for site masters who have special criteria.
To Julie L.:
I lost your e-mail address (what a time to clean my account up). If you
still want a dub of Subconscious, e-mail me.
To Trey Dunn:
I'd be willing to spin a copy of Kev's demo tape for you if you're not
super picky about the sound quality. I got a copy from a dub site, but
I'm not sure what generation it was. I don't listen to my dub site
copy since I figured I'd get more listens by spining a copy of it and
listening to a +1 copy. I'm in San Jose, CA. E-mail if interested.

Hello everyone, it's Babs. Wanted to just share with you all that I
was successfully able to download sound on my computer at work and test
out that web site from the CNOTES dude, sorry - don't know your real name.
I was able to play snipits from the ACoS EP and treat the whole office
to Dream Theater. As one student from NYC put it "this shit is phat..."
I guess that that means that he liked it.
That's all that I have to say today!

PS Isn't it wild that you can do all of this on the computer - just
boggles my mind at times? Oh and one other thing, I heard TTT over the
radio the other day - unfortunately it was a college station (nothing
against college stuff) just sad that I never catch them on the main
stations.

I decided that I would not enter the promo cd concert for
ACOS. This is becaus that if I got a free copy I would not be inclined to
actually buy the real release. The more we buy of their albums the better
chance they will continue to release more albums and tour. I hope everyone
who gets a promo will buy the real release. That sound sample is cool though.
I can't wait to buy the real release....

Just got ahold of an ACOS promo CD. Man - they're blowing me away - AGAIN.
Anyway - some comments on the song 'ACOS'.
1) Somebody grab Petrucci's Wah pedal and throw it away! Can he possibly
record a song without it anymore..? Seems like he's overusing it lately.
2) The whole song has been slowed down from the live 'DOE' or 'Subconscious'
version. It'll take some getting used to. There's some parts that seem to
lack the intensity of the live version because of this.
3) What happened to Portnoy's snare sound..? I'm not a fan of the thin
snare sound.
I know I sound like I'm really griping - but I'm nitpicking!! I'love the CD
- the covers are awesome. I hope they stay with Prater to produce the next
one. I'm looking forward to hearing Derek more - and I'm be interested to
hear his influence on their writing.

I unfortuantly have not hear either _Misplaced Childhood_ OR _Clutching
at Straws_ (Marillion fans are cringing in horror), but have heard the
other albums. _Fugazi_ is a very good album. The first two tracks,
_Assassing_ and _Punch and Judy_ are absolutly incredible, and _Jigsaw_
is another great track. I havnt heard the album all that much, so thats
as much as I can say. $21 is alot, but...
On that Rush thang:
I cannot for the life of me find it, but wasnt there an interview with
James posted to the 'Jam in which he said that DT was a metal band with
progressive influences, as opposed to the other way around?
I dunno... but anyways, one cannot bash any band -much less one with as
many fans as Rush- when you don't give any reasons that they should be
looked down upon. The fact that you don't like what you have heard of
them does not mean that other people will stop liking them...

Hi everybody. I've been a couple of responses to current issues
on the list:
1) THE "RUSH SUCKS" GUY- Having been a subscriber to this list
last year, I knew this guy was going to eat shit for talking trash about
Rush on this list. If you don't like Rush, fine. But if you're going to
tell 500 people (most of whom like Rush) that Rush is crap, at least be
tactful and intelligent about it. Your comments are what I would call
"cyber-suicide." I'm not going to tell anybody how to express themselves,
but if you're going to be doing such an obviously stupid thing, at least
be ready to pay the consequences. For the record, I don't consider myself
a Rush fan, although I do like a fair number of their songs.
2) CHARLIE'S VOICE- Personally, I find it quite annoying and
since I judge a band by it's singer (no flames please!!!), it is the main
reason why I can't stand WDADU. When I hear James doing those songs, he
breathes life into them, IMHO. I also love James's "smooth" I&W style
voice, as well as his more growling Awake voice. Different songs require
different moods. Just as you would use distortion on a guitar for some
songs and not others, the same is true of the voice. Picture "6:00" with
the "smooth" voice...just doesn't fit, does it? Just as the growling
voice would hinder "The Silent Man." Just my $0.02.
3) SPACE DYE VEST- When I first heard this song, I couldn't stand
it. I thought it was so depressing that I just wanted to hurl myself off
a five-story building everytime I heard it. But I gave it a try, and now
I really, really like it. It's still depressing, but in an intelligent
way. The lyrics are absolutely incredible. I'm just not sure that it
should have appeared on "Awake," however. It seems much more of a Kevin
Moore song than a Dream Theater song, meaning that, judging from the
demo, the band didn't have that much input into this song. My theory is
that they put it on there just to make Kevin happy, but that's just my
own personal theory.
-Sorry for the length, but now you won't have to hear from me for a
while. Unless, of course someone says that "Poison sucks." Then words
will be exchanged. *Note*- I am being 100% SERIOUS on that point.
