You know, Airdance, old buddy old pal, I am kind of late getting on this
topic, but would it be all that much out of line to post my thoughts on
    the cover/music/background samples?

    Let's see, random thoughts...

Someone had a part from "To Live Forever" in their tag. The lyrics aren't
written out anywhere, but I'm pretty sure that those lines are "Until I
show desire for revenge, my hunger will wax me to sleep." That is LaBrie's
rendering. Earlier versions have it as "waste me to sleep" instead of
"wax," but that's part of LaBrie's style.

    Hi There

In Ytsejam #959 someone (Dero <UICD@VM.MARIST.EDU>) is asking
some questions, of which I can answer one.

    > 4) The "Live In Long Island: Home At Last" boot lists the following
    > tracks on the second CD: 4. A Change Of Seasons, 5. Another Won,
    > 6. Your Majesty, 7. Two Far, 8. March Of The Tyrant.

    > This CD was recorded Oct. 4, 1992. First question, are tracks 6-8 live
    > with James or just the Majesty demos thrown on for filler? Second
    > question, according to the promo version of ACOS, the text says DT
    only
    > played "ACOS" live twice: once in NY and once in Germany. Well, the
    > above boot is dated OCt. 4, 1992, and includes "ACOS" live
    (supposedly).
    > The _Dance Of Eternity_ CDs, with a live record date of Mar. 4, 1993,
    > _does_ contain "ACOS" live. Also, according to a Nov. 1990 boot
    > listing, DT played an instrumental version of "ACOS" live.

The last four songs on this album are from the first Majesty demo album.
And yes they were thrown on for filler. ACoS has been played more
than twice. As far as I know ACoS was played live during the I&W tour,
Januari & Februari 1993, in Europe.

Since I read my mail once or twice a week, because I work on location
for a customer of our company, I am hopelessly behind reading all the
stuff you guys send in. But It#s something I can live with. First some
comments to a guy which wrote last week in Ytsejam #965.

    Jan Melander wrote:

Last week in Ytsejam #964 I told that I would be willing to open a dub-site
for Europe. For more information you can e-mail me at one of the
addresses mentioned below. BTW I am located in The Netherlands and
my copy number of Subconscious is #453.

The second Instrumental demo has been released here last week. I#ve
ordered my copy at a mailing service and hope to receive it very quick.
So you guys who keep saying that it#s a big DT month, because of two
releases, overhere it#s even bigger with three. BTW Can anybody tell me
of what quality the songs are and which tracks are on it?

To people who love to hear the Australian group Aragon. Their new
album Mouse has been released overhere last week as well. Again it#s a
    great album.

Anyone hasn't got hold of the prize CD yet, because the deadline for
applications will be on October 25th. So maybe those who win the prize
will receive the CDS around the late of this year or early 1996.

BTW, Spanish Heavy Rock Magazine also says that the Ronnie Scott's
show video will be released for Christmas. Could anyone please
confirm it? (In Japan there's no news about the video so far.)

In the U.S. at least, they are relatively easily obtained at the local
Best Buy (I got Silent Man at the BB here in Chicago) and they are also
relatively common at record shows (I just MISSED one here this past

additional $4 per item (except Australia and Germany, who add $6 per item).

    Hi all,

Someone was asking about the Australian band Theater of Dreams. Well, I went
to see them last Monday. The band is actually "On the Virg", featuring the
drummer Virgil Donati (anyone heard of him outside Australia?). He is by far
the greatest drummer in Australia, and one of the best in the world. The bass
player, Evripides Evripedou (or something like that) was a classical guitar
player, who now plays six string bass. Now please don't get me wrong, I am a
bass player, and a huge DT fan, but this guy plays rings around Myung.

The band usually does a set of their original stuff, which is full on fusion.
They are a four piece band, drums, bass, guitar and keys. For their second
set, they get a guy named Andrew Grant (who I used to play with) to sing. His
voice is much stronger than James' voice is live, especially in the higher
register, but he doesn't have that rich vibrato that makes James' voice so
    unique.

Anyway, no promises but I will try to get a tape of the gig, or one of the
future gigs, if anyone is interested.

    See ya

    Adam

Hi fellow jammers, Here's the story on how I got into DT. Well, it's not much of a story, really. I first started listening to hard music with Strypers 'To Hell with the Devil'. A friend of mine was also a Stryper-fan, but he also had some cool music, called instru-metal. In those days, Tony MacAlpine had just released his sophomore album 'Maximum Security' and Vinnie Moore came with 'Time Odyssey'. Then I heard Queensryche for the first time with 'Operation: Mindcrime' and I instantly became a Queensryche-fan. A year later a new band appeared, called Dream Theater. Their debut album, 'When Dream and Day Unite' became my friends favorite album. I didn't listen to it much until the CD was on sale a few years later. Only then I got really hooked on DT. When I heard that the singer had left the band, I thought they had split up. But then came 'Images and Words' and I immediately fell in love with James' voice. Until now I have never heard a band that sounds better than Dream Theater. Well, that's it. By the way, there's also a lot of cool Christian music lately, with bands like King James, Saviour Machine and Torman Maxt. If you're interested in these great bands, send me your snail-mail address and I'll send you a tape. That's it for now. Later!

    Wietze.

Someone asked why people heard Erotomania in ACOS. I here it in both the keyboard sound and rhythm as well as the guitar. It's not hugely obvious, but I noticed it right away. With DT I'm inclined to believe that this was intentional. I find reoccuring themes like these very imaginative when done that way. (Besides, Erotomania is one of my favorites, and a very nice theme it is. :)

Am I the only one who thinks they did it on purpose?

    Hey everyone,

So, how many of you did I meet at the King's X preview party thing down in Glendale? :) I know I met at least a couple YJammers there (you know who you are :), but I was just wondering if there was anyone there from this mailing list who I _didn't_ have the pleasure of meeting. Those X boys are the coolest, aren't they?!

(For the record, I invited Kevin to go to the party w/me because he only lives a few blocks from there, but he was busy. Sorry. :)

    Now, down to business:

On Sunday, Sept. 24th, Mathew W. Yee <psifire@netcom.com> wrote:

"I'm not sure if anyone else found this one or not, but I just ran across the source of one of the SDV samples from Kevin's demo tape.

During what sounds like a channel surf sample, there's a guy telling a girl something about a difference in age:

'Look...uhh...you're 21, and I'm 33.' 'Are you trying to say you don't want to see me again?' 'No...no, no, no. Absolutely not.....yes.' 'Age doesn't matter.'

I was surfing during a commercial brake during the Raiders/Rams game when I came across an episode of 'Full House.' Turns out the sample is Bob Saget talking to some girl he was dating. She was dancing to some music with the oldest daughter in the show when he comes in fuming about the loud music.

Weird what you can discover by channel surfing. :)"

I can't believe you actually picked that out! Nice ears! :) Yep, that's where it's from alright. Kevin claims that he was "channel surfing" himself when he recorded that soundbite, just taping stuff randomly off tv in the hopes that he'd end up w/something he could use. Maybe he's really just a closet "Full House" fan and won't admit it though. ;)

    I take it you don't have a copy of Kevin's demos? :)

Kevin IS playing bass on his new demos, but Rich Kern and he parted ways several months ago. Rich did end up playing on a few of Kevin's post-DT demos, but they aren't in a "band" together, no. I think Kevin said Rich was moving to Seattle?

(BTW, if anybody needs the liner notes or lyrical information for Kevin's demos, just drop me an e-mail & I'll forward them to you.)

On Monday, Sept. 25th Scott Hansen <curth@execpc.com> wrote:

"Anyway, first off, Airdance, Im curious to know if youve spoken to Kevin lately and if so, whats him opinion of ACoS?"

I talked to him last Friday night. He hadn't heard it yet so he didn't have an opinion. :) But I doubt that even if he _didn't_ like it, he would say that publicly because they are all trying to move on now and put the past behind them. I got the impression Kev didn't have any plans to listen to it anytime soon though, so...

He does like the new Jane Siberry album, _Maria_, however. ;)

As of about 10:30pm last Friday night, Kevin still didn't have a record deal, so it's probably safe to say that he still doesn't as of now. ;) He and Mark (Zonder) are still working together on new demos though & they have three new ones finished so far.

I just wanted to stick up for David on this...I agree, if you have a 20 minute "song", structure and form are very important just like they are in any piece of classical music, they aren't just qualities of essays. Even just "songs" have a structure that hold them together, so I don't think anyone needs to be turned off by terms like "development" or "statement of theme". They are just standard concepts for creating more complex pieces of music than pop songs (and I think we all agree ACOS is not destined to be a "hit single"). I'd like to see Dream Theater become more mature in these types of things as well.

WHOA!!! Is this true?? Will that be the same date for America? Merry Christmas (and in my case, Happy Birthday). This will be awesome. I hope my family wasn't looking forward to Christmas carols :D ------- >1) What is it that makes people think they hear Erotomania in ACoS?

It has a similar sound. Even my friend, who doesn't really listen to DT, said that it sounded like other stuff they've done. ------- > 3) The line "I don't need your sympathy . . . " > from ACoS used to be "I > don't need your *mercy* fuck . . .", > not "massive fuck."

Oooooooooooohh. That makes much more sense. I could never figure out how massive fuck fit. Mercy fuck might've been cooler. Even though I've never heard LaBrie say that, I find myself wanting to say it. That's my favorite part of the song too. Kills me.

    * The letters have started to roll in, I have received 36 so far and * they are great, keep 'em coming! I will now begin accepting personal messages to be included in the thank you letter that we will send to DT for putting out ACOS (and for thanking us in the liner notes :).. So go ahead and type up your message to DT and send them to ME PERSONALLY (not the list), I will compile all of them into a booklet format, print them and send them to DT's management (more details as I get close to finishing it). Send your submissions to: mrkizer@ccgate.hac.com put 'DTTYL' in the subject so I don't miss your email and include your name, city, state, country and email address... I would like to put a DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS, let's say Oct 13th... that gives everyone a couple of weeks to do it. Also, if someone has the DT logo or other artwork in a format that I can use (PC/Windows) please let me know... this should preferably be black and white line art type stuff or true type fonts... Hello Jammers,

I would like to thank all of you who have helped me so far with updating the official release DT discography, and ask for information on a couple more things.

I need the information on the Lie promo (someone mentioned this and I lost their address)

I need information on the Japanese ACOS with the certificate for a free CD single (catalog #, tracks on free CD)

I think I have everything else covered.

    Later,

Randall Braun recently posted some trivia questions, and I think I know the answer to the unanswered one. Is it Emerson Lake and Palmer? I had never heard anything by them until a week ago, when a friend made me a tape, and I was listening and said hey, isn't this West Side Story, and now I see this question. Ross

    Hi, all.

    Just some stuff of interest:

The latest issue of Guitar Shop has an article and good picture of JP's current rig. He changes it every couple of months, though!

I agree w/ the Jammes who said the snare on ACoS sounds like Helmet. Also, listen th Primus's latest. Still the best production ever by Primus, but man that snare sounds weak.

    Bye!

    Howdy, Jammers!

Out of curiosity, did anyone go to the DT show in New Jersey at the end of May? It was Friday, May 26, at the Birch Hill in Old Bridge. That was the first DT show I was ever at, and it blew my doors off. Just wanted to see how anyone else felt about the show, or possibly the first DT show you went to. Input? I first heard DT on MTV back when it was almost good, because they had Headbangers Ball. I saw the video for PMU, then went out the next day and bought I&W. Since then, it's been DT all the way. Any other Jammers out there that go to Rutgers, home of the infamous RU Screw? e-mail me at pawly@eden.rutgers.edu See ya pawly

I'm just back from summer, and I've missed hundreds of ytsejam digests, so sorry if this has been mentioned before, but . . .

The rose on the cover of ACOS, in the snow, is a Winter Rose, right?

    James' idea?

I finally got a chance to listen to Subconscious (thanks Mad Dog), and the ACoS on it rules as much as the studio version. The "Please Dont Go" part is definately cool, as is the killer "Mission Impossible." The voice in the "Wanted Dead or Alive" parody is kinda cool, but annoying also ("AYGHHHH!!"). That's all.

What's up people. I'm new on this digest, so I'd like to say hello to all, and thanks to whoever put it together.

Anyway, I would like for someone to tell me about "DOE" and "Subconcious" 'cause in my two and a half years of listening to DT, I have never heard of them. Also where can I get all of these old "boots" 'n stuff for my own listening enjoyment? Curiosity is burning me! Someone reach out and ease the pain! I'm especially curious as to what ACOS sounded like before. Anybody?????.....
