Just wondering if anyone had any comments about my big ACOS review
that I posted? Anybody agree that the buzzing snare is really awful?

Someone mentioned about the rose on the cover of ACOS being a WInter Rose.
    That was cool! :)

Any new jammers that are looking for boots can mail me. I've got a big
list of them including lots of rare DT stuff. Send me your list if
    you have one.

    THanks!

Holy crap dude, you got that right. That movie is easily the best movie I've ever seen. I came out of the theater and my heart was beating funny. So, people, if you have a choice between Showgirls and Seven, go for Seven.. :) You won't regret it.

Question for Mr. GoodBahr.. Are you shipping AD out on September 30, or are we getting AD on September 30. =) I'm pretty sure it would be shipping on the 30th, but I've got to have some thread of hope. heh

    Dear Jammers,

I know that ACoS has just come out, and that everyone is pumped! However, is it really necessary for each and every individual to give their feelings, thoughts, and ideas on the new CD. I knew, once I returned to school and found out that DT had a new one coming out, that the list was going to be jammed full of the same old stuff--"ACoS Rules" or something to that affect. I mean, even before it's release it was "ACoS will be released September 19" ten times per list. It isn't worth taking ten to fifteen minutes to read this list anymore. Everyone and their dog has now posted something about ACoS--please stop!

What happened to this list? I remember the first post I read (over a year ago). It was so full of information and just plain interesting to read. It was so cool that I ran back to my room to and listened to all of my DT CDs. I feel sorry for the newbies to the list because they think that this is it! It's not! There used to be interesting threads here--better than any other list around! Now, when I come in and see a new list, I'm not excited. I already know what it will be about--nothing special. It seems that people are just posting here for the sake of posting--WHY?

I also remember some of the controversial posts, like this one, that we had in the past (remember SloppyJoe). Fuck, people were vicious. However, all of those flames, hate e-mail, and viscous slanders were fun and interesting to read. However, I guess those controversial people were foreseeing the future.

So now I guess it is my turn to be one of those "traders" as everyone will obviously see it. Of course, some will inquire "If you think the list is so boring, and no new threads are posted, why don't YOU start one?" Well, I have! Either people (lurkers too!) will side with me or against me. There are no discussions here anymore; things seem to have died. All of the old list Jammers should know what I mean--remember when the list was full of debates, controversy, helpful hints, important information, and especially Dream Theater! Now it is just "My opinion of ACoS," or a story of some insignificance. Real stories of talking with DT are cool, not drunk people on bus rides with DT mentioned once! I still love Dream Theater for all that it is worth, and in no way is this a personal slam on DT. I know the Greats are watching, and I am ashamed that they must see their list, and our list, fall in rapture.

    So here I stand!

I'm curious to know what other bands DT (or the ytsejam) is responsible for getting you guys into. For me, after hearing DT, I got into other prog bands (namely Rush, ELP, Queensryche, Fates Warning, Magellan, Black Jester, etc.)

After buying AWAKE, I started to get DT boots. Then I hear about all these prog bands that are "like Dream Theater." So I check them out, and I love them. Anyway, if you guys are interested in this thread, please post the bands that you turned to on account of DT or the ytsejam.

    Hi jammers!

Well, its getting late (Im typing this at 1:20 AM), but I think I may have come up with a decent understanding on the lyrics in the Another World part of ACoS, so I felt it important to share with all, since I dont recall anyone else covering it *yet* (<---- geeze, is that a run on sentence or what?!?) If it has been covered before (I actually am not the kind of person who normally dissects the lyrics, but...) please forgive me. BTW, sorry if this goes a bit into religion (I personally dont like to mix religion and good music but Im making an exception here); also, I DONT mean to offend anyone at all (for the record, I myself am a strong Christian).

Okay, anyway, we all know that Mike is more of a secular guy (AKA not very religious, or so it seems). Also, its been established that the death of Mikes mother was one of the (main?) inspirations for this song. Keeping those things mind, judging by what the lyrics state, I think Mike is speaking about bitterness felt towards religion after his mother passed away. The lyrics say I was blinded by a paradise, Utopia high in the sky I would imagine referring to him originally believing that his mother was going to heaven, but then after seeing the lies of many religious leaders (Baker, Swaggert, etc.), second-guessing what really is the truth about what happened to his mother after she died. Oh come let us adore him, abuse and then ignore him - possibly referring to people and the church apologizing to Mike for her death (probably telling him that God needed another angel or something like that) but then just disappearing after the funeral and not having any further contact with him (not exactly what people who REALLY care would do). Im sick of all you hypocrites holding me at bay, and I dont need your sympathy to get me through the day - Mikes response to those friends at the funeral and those at the church.

I realize I may be stretching things a bit and I dont have an explanation for all the lyrics, but like I said, I think the overall message in Another World is Mikes disillusionment with religion from the lies hes seen and this is brought up by his mothers death.

Again, I apologize if I offended anyone - this was just my interpretation, and is not the verified official meaning behind the lyrics. However, I would be curious as to what others think of the lyrics from this section of ACoS - do you agree with me or do you have a different interpretation of the lyrics? Sorry for the long post - Ill shut up now...

We all know the members of DT are great musicians.

Does anyone here like Dave Matthews band? They come nowhere close to DT's type of music, but I find them to be excellent musicians, especially the violinist. He is amazing. I guess their music is alternative/rock? I saw DMB in concert and although they put on an excellent show, they do not compare to DT in concert.

OK...Since we've talked about Myung and Petrucci's ability to improvise (or lack thereof, whichever side you're on), I'd like to submit James' weakness in this department. It seems to show a lot on the ACOS covers where athe singer imporovises over the chorus at the end of songs or at other parts written as instrumental. First, James only sticks to "Ohhhhhhhhhhh" and "Waohhhhhhhhhh." He doesn't even use the "Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh" that many singers use. But this could be more style and an attempt avoid watering down the lyrics as written.

Second, his vocal patterns never deviate from long drawn out notes that slur from one to the next. Not abig deal, but they tend to show little decisiveness as to where he wants to go and if it fits the chord changes. Overall, he just doesn't seem confortable. I think this is especially true in "Perfect Strangers." To me, James is better at singing written material than trying to infuse a different approach on any given song. I think it's easier for a singer to reproduce the originalscore than a Petrucci or Myung to (on-stage) recreate the 12 4th notes they write. But James still seems to be tentative in his improvisiations.

Thoughts, anyone? Does this make sense? Best example off the top of my head would be Steve Perry and his vocal meanderings. Maybe this isn't a real big area of expression in progressive rock.

Hey all, I read elsewhere that someone thinks this kid looks like the Kid from Boy Meets World (is it?). I can see that, but my wife and I think the kid on the cover of ACoS looks a hellava lot like Mike Portnoy. Does he have a son, nephew, cousin, genetic engineering laboratory? Also, the guy on the inside cover isn't our favorite old guy of Fates Warning fame (Metallica ripped him off from them). Anybody know who it is? Wouldn't it be funny if they were both related to MP? Well maybe not funny, ha ha funny, but rather, funny interesting funny. Gotta go. Slideshow boring. Losing consciousness.

As a fan of bot DT and DMB I felt compelled to reply to this post. I agree that the members of DMB are excellent musicians, and indeed their style of music is nothing like DT's. However, I would not agree that the members of DT are a.) better musicians, or b.) better in concert. If anything they are probably equally as talented musically and in my opinion DMB puts on a better live show.

The difference to me is that DMB never plays the same show twice. They mix up the songs every show, adding and removing tunes to keep things fresh. Also, the boys in DMB, particularly Boyd Tinsley, the violinist, play incredible stretches of improvised music throughout their songs. Not only do they play different songs every show, but they never play the same song exactly the same way. That is why true DMB fans are very fanatical about getting bootlegs of many different shows because each is so unique. Dave is also notorious for playing many of their songs solo...just his voice and his guitar.

To anyone interested in a truely ORIGINAL and gifted band give these guys a listen. The band consists of Dave, who plays acoustic guitar and sings, a violinist, a saxaphone(woodwind) player, a bassist, and a drummer. Check out Remember Two Things for older live stuff and acoustic Dave, or buy the studio release Under The Table and Dreaming for a more polished sound. You might have heard Ants Marching from this album...it is pretty popular these days.

I've been a fan of Saga ever since I heard World's Apart. Their very best song ever is on this album and it's called "No Stranger". If you ever find this in the discount bin, it'd be a wise investment. Also on this same CD is a song that got some airplay back when I was in High School - "On the Loose". An excellent tune as well.

Four of their earlier CDs contain songs labeled as chapters. I had a hard time finding them all, but I finally did it a couple years ago. It's kind of interesting to listen to, bit I didn't really dissect it so I don't know if it has any deep meaning or tells some kind of story.

Surprisingly I don't have any of their recent stuff (Heads or Tails is the last one I have - it's great too). I think I'll pick up G 13 now, though.

There's a part in Derek's solo that reminds me of a Saga song, I just haven't had a chance to go back and find out which one. It's the "de da da do - de da da de" at 18:56-18:58 that I'm thinking I've heard before. If I find it I'll post info.

I finally listened closely to the Subcon version of DLPM with "whassisname" singing (don't have the info sheet in front of me). He did have some range, for sure. But his style sucked and he completely sounded like a puss-boy. He would have fit in nicely singing Carpenters songs (sorry to all Karen Carpenter fans). I know this post should have been sent a few months ago, but MAN I can't believe they even spent studio time with him. Sap city!!! LATER fo' you!!!

Hello everyone, it's Babs. This is for Jennie Bear. I haven't heard from you in a while, where are you? I tried to email you a couple times and haven't heard back.

Also for Rob Martino - thanks for sticking up for David. He needs all the support he can get (just kidding). Actually David and I are good friends, no need to worry. We love to argue about things, it's half the fun!

some last jam asked if anyone out here listens to thought industry. i do, and i must say that thought industry is *the shit*...

thought industry is to me the most interesting metal band to come around in a long time. they do as much for me as echolyn. in fact, my two favorite cd's to listen to right now are echolyn's "suffocating the bloom" and thought industry's "mod's carve the pig".

thought industry is from kalamazoo, MI, and blend prog-metal, industrial, thrash, acoustic, jazz, all kinds of styles together to create a unique style of their own that is just amazing.

they have 2 albums out already (that i know of) plus one about to be released:

songs for insects mods carve the pigs: toad's, assassins, and god's flesh outer space is just a martini away

mods carve is the only one i have, songs for insects is out of print. i have heard it though and it is amazing. i saw them in houston (and DAT taped them of course) and they played some songs from the forthcoming outer space album, and they were amazing too.

if you can find one of their albums, snag the sucker. songs for insects is as hard to find as suffocating the bloom or helstar's nosferatu...

as stupid as it sounds, i am considering flying my ass to japan from texas to catch at least one (maybe all 3) of the japanese shows next month. if anyone has some info about where to stay, how to get around, where to get cheap airline tix, etc, i would appreciate it.

the shows are on 10/26, 10/28, and 10/30. anyone wanna come with? :)

i am considering selling off most of my guitar rack to pay for the trip, and going as a graduating present to myself. i am graduating in december and i figure i can always buy new guitar shit then. this might be the last opportunity to ever see DT play ACOS and i have never seen it performed live.

of course if i go, i will be DAT taping :) i would also like some info from you japanese folks about security and stuff at the japanese shows.

    later..
