    Hey Jammers,

Just got some very cool news.....>DT is playing at a local club
on December 27!!!! They posted it today. No price on tickets yet
but I imagine they'll be around $10. The club is pretty neat, it
probably only holds about 150-200 people. Spin Doctors are
playing there tonight and the tix are $10. I'll keep people posted
as to when they are going to sell tickets.......all to cool man, it's
fu__ing awesome. Any jammers want to take a Christmas drive
to Groton, CT to see the show with me?? It's only 4 miles from
my house..................gotta go but has anyone else heard of DT
doing any other shows while they are supposed to be recording
    their album???

Tim Adams (a very very excited guy!!!!)

oh yea, I just heard the other day that the guy who owns the club
they are playing at has some connection with several record
companies. The same guy told me they would be playing there
in the next couple of weeks and I was like "yea, ok..." and then
today....THEY POSTED THE DATE!!!!! I'll be talking to this guy a
lot more in the future. Later all!!!

This is focused at Matt, "The Guy Who's Confused about DoE",

Matt, there are two bootlegs with very similar titles. One is a single disc
by the name of "Dance of Eternity" the other is a two disc boot called "The
Dance of Eternity". People on the list sometimes take for granted that there
is another boot called DoE. I fall under that catagory too but I didn't know
that anyone even knew about the single disc version. Sorry for the confusion.

Also, there used to be a cool list on some guys home page (I found it by
searching with YaHoo) with all of the available bootlegs from DT. I recently
tried connecting to that sight to see if it was updated but I was unable to. I
know there is still an HTML version though but it hasn't been updated in
almost a year. I saw a boot called "Images and Tour" on that list that I
really want to get but all of the posts that I left to the jam were never
answered. Somebody has to know something about this boot otherwise it wouldn't
be on that list. Please email me directly if anyone has ANY info on this CD.

                                            Sorry for the rambling,
                                                      Craig (Dream@puerta.dct.com)

I was just catching up on my Jams when I saw Jaime's post as to how
    she got into DT:

    -----------------------

Repeat of a story I told the last time someone asked this question: when I
was living up in Rochester, NY, I used to listen to 96 WCMF, the local rock
n' roll station. (until I discovered a much better college station, 90.7
WGCC.) Around Sept. of 1992, I kept hearing this totally awesome song,
"Pull Me Under". I had no idea who the band was (because the damned DJs
would never say), but I kept cranking up the volume every time I heard it.
When a DJ finally announced the name of the band, I went out and bought
_Images_ and that was the end of that.

Jaime the Dragon, procrastinating editing a paper for English.

    -------------------

That's exactly how I got into DT. Same story, same place, same
station, same DJ who wouldn't say who the song was by.

I found that very interesting ..... if any of you do, well ... good
    for you.

                -Brian

p.s. Hello to Jason at PSU whom I think is out there. We ran into eachother a
couple weeks ago on the campus. I was on my way to a test, so I didn't
         have much time to talk.

    (written 9/25/95)
    Ok.

I like the intro. It reminds me of "Rotten Apple," from Alice In Chains'
"Jar Of Flies" ep. Very morbid. I don't like how they slowed parts down,
but I guess that's their style, like James changing vocals so they're
easier to sing. I'm still somewhat confused as to why Kevin Moore did not
come back and play on this, or why the other four went ahead and recorded
it without him. Surely they invited him to the studio?

Anyway, whatever the reason, maybe now the masses will be satisfied enough
to stop comparing Derek Sherinian, who is a damn good musician/
keyboardist, and a very experienced one at that, to Kevin Moore, former
keyboardist for Dream Theater. Hey, I love Kevin's work, but a lot of
people are putting down Derek like he's some child in an adult's world. I
have news for you people. Derek's been recording and touring before Dream
Theater got their first record deal. I'm not saying either one is better,
I just hope that "A Change Of Seasons" will cement in the mind of every
Dream Theater fan that the band has chosen and new keyboardist, he's got
all the chops one needs, and he's here to stay.

Otherwise, I agree that every ass in the universe gets kicked
simultaneously on that stomping riff at 18:35. It reminds me of the
opening riff to "Cynical" by Extreme. As for Erotomania in ACOS, did it
ever occur to anyone that the same musicians wrote both pieces? You don't
suppose they have mannerisms or particular ways they like to structure
their music? You don't suppose two books by the same author might have
    similar passages or writing styles?

I won't bother analyzing the lyrics because I'm sure we'll be talking
about this one well into 1996. And because I'm still trying to figure out
"Under A Glass Moon." Speaking of I&W, I still disagree that all eight
songs are pictured in the cover. Horse hockey hooey.

Speaking of covers. Can we say "parallel?" A child sitting in what appears
to be a snow-covered field, but is actually white sand, complete with
shovel and bucket. ???? A fresh rose growing, in the snow of winter...put
two and two together and you've got James' previous band. Now what style
of hatch is that on the house in the background? :) Then we have freshly
fallen snow (or so it appears), fresh footprints, fresh snowplowing, and
fresh skies from storm clouds blowing over a horizon. This picture seems
to symbolize everything new or growing. "Birth" would be a good theme. A
beginning. Let's not forget it's also winter (supposedly), which is a
season, as well as the phrase "Gather ye rosebuds," which relates to the
rose in both pictures. The air here is still, and the picture looks
    relatively calm.

About the boy: I wonder if this is a retouched picture of one of the
members of the band. Possibly Mike Portnoy himself. He's dressed like it's
the middle of the summer. Is he crazy?!

Open the cd, and it's BOOM! Summer! Hot hot hot! The clouds in the sky are
the same as on the front cover, but now the overall color is the opposite
of blue: orange. An old man who I first thought might be the "Enter
Sandman" spokesman but actually is not at all is seated in a beach chair.
He appears to be on a beach, but instead of sand we have black asphalt,
like a road. Somehow the sand got transported over to the winter scene.
Anyway, this guy is dressed like it's the middle of the winter. Yet
another bizarre allusion to the front cover.

The rose is dead, the water is foaming, and wind is blowing fiercely.
Unlike the front cover, this picture is of motion and change. There are
scattered rosebuds, further driving the point home that the rose "tomorrow
will be dying." Then there's the calendar with the pages flying away. One
could say "The days are just flying by." Tumultuous passing of time.
Notice the latest page is dated November 16, which fits appropriately
considering this is a picture of winter. Or at least the old man thinks
    so. :)

All in all, the twin covers symbolize the seasons and their shiftings, the
most opposite being summer and winter. Many themes are interspersed and
mixed, while other things are blatant opposites. The dead rose and asphalt
in place of sand (which somehow ended up in the open field of the blue
cover) could symbolize the ending of nature via mankind's destruction. A
"paved beach." Basically, I have come to the supreme conclusion that a
good title for these twin covers would be "A Change Of Seasons."

Now for the voices: (beneath "haaaaooooaaaaa" or however it's spelled)

"It's the most awful thing you'll ever hear."
    "If you're lying to me..."
"Oh, you DEARLY love her." (Billy Zane?)
"...just have to leave...all our lives." (a eulogy?)
    "Sieze the day!"
    "Something happened."
"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may."
    "She was killed."
"PLEASE DON'T GO!!!" Oh, wait, that's not on this cd...

The live stuff was cool too, even though I've never heard (of) any of it.
"Perfect Strangers" rocks, and I just might have to check out Deep Purple.
James' vocals, and I know he'll hate me if he reads this, remind me of the
Winter Rose show from so long ago. He's just FLYING. Super-high,
super-loud, super-vibrato, super-perfect-pitch! He never seems this strong
at DT shows. Why? Maybe because he knew the show was being taped, or
because this show of cover material meant a lot to him, so a flawless
performance was in order. I'm trying to imagine if DT were to do this with
a show of their own material...

Hey, I just realized this is the Ytsejam mailing list... Anyone notice how
the instrumental break at 2:12 of "Perfect Strangers" sounds a bit like
    the opening riff to "Ytsejam?"

I think this cd will really back up what the band mentioned a while back
about how "if they ever wanted to do a live album" etc. This certainly
proves that they could, and it would rock. This Ronnie Scotts gig sounded
SOOO much better than ALL of the other live shows of theirs I've heard.
Each instrument was actually clear and equalized.

The review has ended, go in peace.

    Bafu Vai

    p.s. for those who remember:

"In my den of inequity" ???
Geez, I guess Dream Theater is as stupid as I am. Everyone knows
"inequity" isn't a real word. These guys can't speak English, they need
    dictionaries, etc. :)

"Life goes on the offbeaten track"
There they go again! Geez, it's "They all meet at 12." How many times do
we have to tell them? Not this "offbeaten trail" or "track" or off-beaten
    anything. :)

    Hello Jammers
I've got a problem. Every time I listen to ACoS, during couple
minutes right after James' whoaing section I just start headbanging and
    thrashing around.
I don't know what the deal is. Hmm. Oh well.

    > 5- I asked one of the voice teachers here at PSU to translate "Adesso che o
    > perso la vista, ci vedo meglio e di piu." According to Marshall Urban and
    > his Italian\English dictionary, it means, "now that the sight is lost, we
    > can see clearly and of more." That is direct from archaic Italian.

Isn't this quote a sound-byte from the movie "Cinema Paradiso"?
(an awesome movie by the way) I don't think it's archaic, but your
translation is close close enough to get the general idea. But I think the
DT lyrics represent the closest English translation. Also, that translation
makes sense in context to the movie.

As for the debate between the ACOS lyrics "mercy fuck" vs. "sympathy,"
"sympathy" definitely makes more sense here.

I'm sick of all you hypocrits
                    Holding me at bay
And I don't need your sympathy
To get me through the day

These lines talk of something that is on-going. A mercy-fuck is probably
a one-time thing. Especially when you consider it in the context of Another
World; it is about a world where image is more important than substance.

Off the pages and the T.V. screen
Another world where nothing is true

TV pretends to care about you by giving you(sympathy) to keep you
staring at its "Utopia" and its advertisements. A "Mercy fuck" may be an
act of sympathy, but it does not tie into the hypocritical stance of what
the media is doing. Any fucking done by the "hypocrits"would not be meryful.
    In the lines

Oh come let us adore him
No matter what, don't let him be
                    Let's feed upon his misery
Then string him up for all the world to see

An allusion to the hypocritical practices of religion, especially those on TV
(anybody given Tammy Fay Baker any money lately?) In other words,
let's go to church every Sunday, but under no circumstances should we
follow its teachings. The TV evangelists will hold up Christ's image to
everybody to get as much money out of them as possible. Hypocrital
bullshit like that is what this song is protesting. Carpe diem means much
more than "sieze the day;" it is a warning to take back your life from those
who would exploit you while pretending to be your friend.

Sorry this was so long, but it just had to be said.

    Hey all you Ytsejamers-

The limited Ytsejam (DT) stickers are here...and ready for
           ship-out!

Q: What do they look like and how can I get my OWN?

A: The stickers are 3x3 inches. Clear-(made for windows),
for ie: so you can place one on the inside of your car window
for the WHOLE world to see.
The TOP of the sticker has "Dream Theater" written(curved
printing/with redish ink). The MIDDLE of the sticker has the
DT "symbol"(in black ink). On the BOTTOM it has "Ytsejam"
(written in redish ink/slanted). YOU can get a preview of
the sticker on the NET by checking out:
                       http://www.dreamt.org

There is a very limited printing of these stickers avalible.
Just a note to anyone who thinks I'm doing this for financial
gain...this is just not true. IT all started when I noticed
some Ytsejamers on the net mention that they're having a hard
time finding window stickers to promote one of their favorite
bands. I saw a need and wanted to fill it. #2: Since I am
not printing thousands(cost are much higher) and therefore I
can not "make thousands". I am lucky if I break-even. IF
management wants me to help run their merchandising/fan
               club...that's a whole other ball-game.(They can contact
               me)...grin.. :)

IF YOU would like your own sticker(s)...then you can write to
the address below. The stickers are only $2.00 each(includes
               shipping/handling).(U.S. currency/check/M.O.accepted).
               Orders *Out-Side the U.S./add $1.00 for shipping/on any #
ordered)). For a better DEAL...if you order 10(ten) or more
stickers at any one time...your cost is $1.50 each)*

    Hey guys,
if you think the idea about a dub site for boots is good, send me your info
like this so I can copy and paste it much easier.

    name, email address

I've got another slant for this question. I don't think it was meant to be calling someone a fuck, as the comma version would suggest, and maybe not even referring to an actual act of sexual intercourse. Sometimes people use the word fuck as a synonym for "garbage" or "bullshit" or "baloney", even. For example: "I can't go out with you guys tonight; I've got a lotta fuck to take care of." As silly as it may sound, I've actually heard it used this way! Try this "meaning" in the context of the song and see what you think! Later!

I just love it when someone writes a review like that guy did of ACoS!! It's just the funniest thing!! (trying to remain calm....) I bet he went on to give a wonderful review of Weezer or some crap like that. Just remember, people, when Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" made its appearance back in the early 20th century (I think), people thought it was garbage, and it was like totally shunned!! But now? It's a masterpiece!! Like with just about all the classical composers -- none of them really got any recognition for their music while they were alive. Basically the same type of thing is happening now with DT (unfortunately). I guess us ytsejammers are just ahead of our time!!

Brian - addmitted lover of "wanker guitar"!!

But "sympathy" doesn't imply any false emotion. "Mercy fuck" is a more descriptive phrase.

Yeah, I kept trying to equate those lines to religion. I think it's trying to say that media has a religious-like fervor in covering stories with no real regard to the victim except exploitation.

Either that, or Mike just thought the Christmas carol verses sounded nice. :)

ACoS does rule! <until I figure out how to quote, i'm going to be in big trouble here!> Here's a Q tho ... Where does someone go find the 7-string RG that Petrucci uses (if it even is an RG)? I know Ibanez makes a few 7-stringers, and that Steve Vai used it on his Passion and Warfare album (just look for those notes that go REALLY REALLY low). Also, anyone notice that Erotomania is pretty much the only song on Awake that doesn't use the lowest string? You can play it pretty accurately on a 6-stringer!

What do people think of "Eve", the instrumental off the "Silent Man" single? I think it's very cool ... no real lightning solos, just really emotional melodic lines! Sometimes ya just gotta slow down!

Jammers, I am finally just about ready to begin posting some stuff on the Awake album and how _*ALL*_ songs fit into the album as a concept album. Sure some people think that everything from track 4-10 is a concept album. However if that were so, then what are the other songs doing there? Well, I say that all are part of the concept. Briefly said, the concept album is all about breaking commitment and tearing apart your soul and hurting yourself/others. There are a few basic categories for how each song could fit in: Storyline, innerfeelings, thought processes. Some songs are in one category, some two, some all three. I am going to prove how they all fit into at least one of these categories. So until my next post on this, have a good one. Later on, Howard

I found this on the net and thought alot of you might like to know what is going on...

    _________

I started to grow weary of all the speculation and rumors regarding Fates Warning. So I called Mark Zonder. I've had his phone number for a while and call him about once I don't call him all the time because I don't want to abuse the fact that I have his number.

    Anyway, here's what's going on:

Yes, Frank Aresti is gone. There was a falling out between him and the rest of the band after the last FW/DT tour and they put pressure on him to quit. So he did. I didn't get into details as to exactly why they're pissed at him, but Mark blamed Frank entirely for why there wasn't a tour with Fates headlining after the Fates/DT tour ended.

Ray is NOT gone. The guy from Helstar is NOT in the band. He MAY tour with them, but he is not officially in the band and he did not compose anything on the next album. (Also, I expressed dissapointment at the fact that they missed San Diego last time, and he was pretty sure they'd make it this time).

The next album IS one big song. But Mark stressed that it is not like Ivory Gates. We talk a bit about what "progressive" means and such... he feels the last two albums are indeed progressive and complex, but at the same time more accessible, BUT he said they are taking a "hard left turn" from the last two and are heading back toward Perfect Symetry in a sense. But he made sure to stress that their style is still evolving and it won't sound like PS, ie. it will just be more progressive and complex like PS. Apparently Jim is messing with guitar synths and some keyboards more and more and these will be used in the next album. They are recording this album in Dec/Jan so we should have it around March. They're still on Metal Blade for the US and another label for europe and one for Japan.

In summary, for me anyway, YES!!! They're getting more progressive again! Fates is back! Of course, my favorite albums are PS, Spectre, and Awaken, so I have cause for rejoicing.

The only thing that dissapointed me was that Mark said Ray's singing will not be as high as earlier -- more like the last two albums. I expressed regret over this, but Mark said, "Hey, he's getting older." Oh well. This confirms my suspicions that he can't hit the higher notes anymore. Mark may say it's age, but my suspicion is that it was too many packs smoked.

Anyway, just wanted to say that Mark Zonder, aside from being one of the best, if not THE best drummer, is also a way cool person for taking the time to speak with some guy that calls out of the blue once a year to find out what's going on with his favorite band.

    -Brad

    --------

This should definatly be cool!! Maybe Mark will get Kevin to come and help out a bit since they are experimenting with keyboards!! Fates could become the new, old DT, like from I & W's!!!!! That would rule!!!
