Dream Theater. What can I say? The most talented band I've heard in a damn
long time. Moore, Myung, Petrucci, Portnoy and LaBrie. Damn, there's five names
sent from god. I would really like to get some information on more t-shirts and
other little trinkets from the best band around.
                                     my E-Mail address is Barker1@acavax.lynchburg.edu

P.S. I too am a Dream Theater Fan. My name is Jarrett, and I play the drums,
unfortuneatley, I don't play like Mike Pornoy, but then again, not many people do.
I love everything that Dream Theater plays. Please send me information as well
about what the band is doing and if they will ever be near my area, i.e. Richmond
Virgina, or D.C. My E-mail address is King@acavax.lynchburg.edu

In response to Jam # 946:
Randall Brown asked what connection Yes has to West Side Story. The
opening track of Yes' boxed set, "YesYears," is the song "Something's
    Coming" from WSS.

James (omman@solar.sky.net) asked about Rush epics, and which CD to buy.
Just about anything before Exit... Stage Left has long songs on it.
However, the best ones (IMHO) are "2112" on _2112_, "The Necromancer" on
_A Caress of Steel_, and "Cygnus X-1", which is on _A Farewell to Kings_
and _Hemispheres_. Need more Rush info? E-mail
rush-request@syrinx.umd.edu to subscribe to "The National Midnight Star,"
the Rush equivalent to the Jam.

Apparently the American date is the 26th, so it looks like us canucks are getting it a week earlier than the Americans this time. Maybe it's to make up for the Awake. Anyway, I'm not complaining... ;)

Are their any students on this list who attend Drew University? I'm thinking that the answer will be no since Drew is such a small school.

THEY CUT THE _PLEASE DON'T GO!_" PART!!!!!!!!!

    SAY IT AINT SO!!!!!!

THAT WAS ABSOLUTLY THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD JAMES!!!! Man, now I ain't even gonna bother gettin it... just kidding, but man, that hurts. I geuss _Metropolis_ stays at number one in my book.... Then again, _maybe_ I should wait to hear ACoS first... <g>

Cutting that, to me, is kinda like cutting a minute or 2 out of the _Metropolis_ solo, or the outro solo for IF, or the end to _Only A Matter of Time_, or the climax of _Another Hand-The Killing Hand_ on LatM, _Surrounded_, or TLF/that_really_awesome_Petrucci_solo_after_it from the video... BTW - that last paragraph works for a list of my favorite DT "moments"...

Worst DT moments would be very hard to impossible to do, but I will note two places that just seem weird to me: _Lie_ on the _Lie_ single w/o _The Mirror_ before it, and _Space-Dye Vest_ w/o _Blanket (I Buried Me Wife And I Dance On Top Of Her)_ [Kevin Moore] after it...

Hello all! I decided, after reading all of the past few 'Jams which referred to the thread I started, to repost my stance. The thread was about those three elusive songs on I&W: Another Day, Surrounded, and Wait For Sleep. Many people had posted that they, "too," had skipped those few songs when they first bought the album. I, however, did not. The "acquantaince" that taped the album for me told me that he did not hold these songs in high regard, and even left WFS off the tape, even though it could have fit. When I purchased the CD, these three songs made the biggest impression upon me because they were so different from the rest. I enjoyed telling my friends about a band whose songs could be played (in theory) on a wide variety of stations, such as KNAC (the recently deceased local heavy metal station) and STAR 98.7 (a "top hits of the '80s and '90s" station) -- the last part was actually a joke, so no flames, please. :) In fact, under certain conditions, WFS can even squeeze a tear out of the relatively dry eyes. BTW, does anybody else think of Santa when they hear the intro to Metropolis? Now for the "stuff"...lst time I mentioned Voivod, a progressive/Cana- dian/punk/metal band. This time I am recommending a group which is a little less edgy, but a lot more weird. The band is Altered State, a.k.a. altered stAte, depending on which album you are looking at. I only know of two albums, self titled and their second one called :[dos]: (that's "two" in Spanish, not the IBM operating system). They only had one song get airplay, "Ghost Beside My Bed" off of the first album. This was played for, oh, two weeks. It was and always will be an awesome song. I am pretty sure the can be called progres- sive, because some of their stuff is really weird. I think this is what progressive is, though. (They're definitely not "alternative": they don't have a grunge feel, and they don't use feedback and stuff...you can actually hear the individual riffs on the guitar and bass!) I believe somebody once posted a comment by one of the members of DT, and I'm paraphrasing, "Not everybody is going to buy our stuff, because it is just too weird." That can definitely be said about Altered State. Consider this...the photos on their first album make them look like Slaughter with one member a Brian Austin Green look-a-like. On :[dos]: they look more like Alice In Chains. Their music got harder, but it is still just as weird. They deserve a listen to...from their groovy, slow, deep number about making love: "reunion"; to their funky story song about Blade Runner: "where is harrison ford (?)"; to their trippy story song about getting drunk and the meaning of life: "thinkin' about movin' to a catatonic state." Ye, a songs are spelled in lower case...it's not just me. Drop me a line if you want to hear more about Altered State, or hear them (Voivod, too, for that matter).

Well, I dropped by a local record store to check on the release date for ACoS. Blockbuster Music has it as Sept. 19th -- but the first store I stopped at also had a promo copy of it! After some gentle begging and pleading ("I flew to Detroit to see this band live"), did they give me the copy?

Not only no, but hell, no. Bastards! :)

After tossing a virtual molotov through the window of the store and resolving not to shop there again, I drove over to the mall, with visions of more promo copies dancing in my head. I tried another location of the same chain, Blockbuster, but they didn't have a copy or didn't want to look. I tried the other record store in the mall, a smaller place. I decided to play it really dumb. "Hey, I heard there's a new Dream Theater album coming out -- heard anything?" "Well, it's not here yet, but it -is- playing in my living room..." Turns out that Gerry, the store manager, is a DT fan and got an early copy through a friend at Elektra. Oh, well, at least I'd found someone to talk DT with; I told him about us, about Subconscious, about seeing them in Detroit last November....... While we're talking, a UPS dude shows up with some packages. One of them is a small package with WEA on the side. In the box is a promo copy of ACoS (which I almost pointed out before realizing that I wasn't supposed to know what it looked like yet :)). About a minute later, Gerry handed it to me. <faint> Now Gerry has some more stuff to listen to, 'cause he doesn't have LatM or any bootlegs. I felt I had to make a dub tape for him in return for his kindness. Let's all think kind thoughts toward Gerry. :) :)

ACoS is wonderful, just what we wanted from our buds in the band. As someone else observed, there isn't too much commercial appeal in an EP of this type -- some of the covers would make interesting "novelty" radio tracks, but ACoS itself would be tough. Great song, though, better by far than the version on DANCE OF ETERNITY. The covers are all great, but "Funeral/Bleeding" is splendid! For those who don't have this yet, the wait WILL be worth it. :)

Fellow Jammers, I was listening to Awake one night last week with the headphones, when I heard a faint dialogue for the first time in the middle of Mirror. I belive the time is three minutes, twenty seconds into the track. Well, call me crazy, call me insane, send me to the asylum: the WHOLE album is a concept album. Yes, every song. I am currently disecting all the lyrics to figure out how they all fit in, and believe me, they do. Give me at least a week so that I can finish. Once I have finished, I can let you all in on this idea. The only song that I wont be able to have an analysis for is the bonus track on the Japanese Awake.

Speaking of the Japanese Awake, does anyone know why the Japanese fans get bonus tracks on DT albums and no one else does unless by import?

Here's some stuff I've been saving up for awhile.

First, I've been wearing my Ytsejam shirt around and have gotten inquiries about it from my 3 converts. Is Jason still producing them or does anyone have extras? Sorry Jason, I lost your email address with my move to my MSU mailing account. Which reminds me, are there any Michigan State DT 'Jammers? If so, mail me or drop by the ZBT house on Michigan Ave. sometime. We are slowly building a strong DT backing here through constant inundation.:> Next, does anyone have the mail(snail or E-) for the guy who was offering DT window stickers? I meant to mail him once I got settled and started working here, but I lost his address in transition also. Last, I know some of you out there are big King's X fans. I got the S-T album long ago and then moved to Dogman. Then I got Faith, Hope, Love and really didn't like it. Should I continue with Silent Planet and Gretchen, or will I be disappointed with them as much as FHL?

    Thanks alot!
