i just borrowed a cd from my bud, a band called iced earth. its
incredible stuff, these guys are like, progressive death metal or
somethin' any jammers into harder music should check this out. on
their 95 album, Burn Offerings, they have a song thats like 17 minutes,
its kind of like a death metal ACoS, its goes through the seven planes
of hell instead of the four seasons, very cool. heres what REALLY
caught my attention that got me to post this, i was flippin through the
booklet, looking at the thank yous and who did i see, but Dream
Theater. hey hey need i say more about these guys? ok thats it for
now

No it wouldn't. It would be a chair being used as a table. If you beat on
a trash can, it's a trash can, not a drum. You might be playing some
serious rythms but you'd be playing them on a trash can. If the music
specified a trash can and you used a drum, it wouldn't be a trash can.
You can't just change the name of a thing. This guys ass ain't no musical
instrument and no sound coming from it is music even if he stood on a
float with his ass in the air and blasted away to the rythm of the rest
of the band. You wouldn't hear any kids saying, "mom, can I study the ass
instead of the trumpet." :)
Music.
1. The art of combining tones to form expressive compositions. 2. such
compositions 3. any rhythmic sequence of _pleasing_ sounds.
Now I'll admit that I sometimes laugh when I fart so that may be
misinterpreted as pleasing but I doubt that others would consider it a
pleasing sound or a combination of tones or an expressive composition.
It's a fart!
Simply put, all music is a sound but not all sounds are music. Besides,
this was about musicians, not music itself. :)

I've been waiting a long time for someone to bring this up
(since I thought I was wrong), but at the beginning of
"Symbols of Time", a little before the vocals kick in, it
sounds like they're trying something like DT did at the
beginning of "The Mirror". You know, the guitar rythm stays
the same, while the drum rythm changes to make the guitar
sound different? Anyone else notice this? Maybye I'm wrong
(I still can't hear it in the "The Mirror" intro.

Vauxdvihl sound much more like fates warning to me than DT or QR. I
highly recommend the cd, though. i got mine for $15 or so from
genesisman@aol.com. its dark and thick... it reminds me of FW's
perfect symmetry with the atmosphere of parallels, but that's not all
there is to it. their lyrics are a little similar to rush's, but less
preachy. i really enjoy this cd and i have nothing but good things to
say about it. they're good songs, harmonically complex, and they have
their own style (though its not without its roots). its good stuff.
give it another try, at least.

There really isn't much of a difference. One comes out of
Germany and the other out of Japan. The German ver. has
"Surrounded" where the Japanese has "Another Day." Sound
quality is the same.

I just got Savatage's Dead Winter Dead...HOLY
SHIIIIIIIIIITTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....DAMN I love this cd,
it's my second listen through. It's like Classical combined with
metal and other GREAT stuff inbetween.
I noticed something on the line-up, Al Pitrelli, who is a wicked
guitarist and has played with Alice Cooper for years, did he
just join them? Who is part of the origonal line up...I think
zak steven's isand the drummer, if anyone can tell me, please do
so. I have to say, I thought DT was progressive and after them,
i got into Fates Warning which blew my mind as to what
progressive music can be and now I hear Savatage and this makes
DT look like a bunch of wusses. I wish DT would put out songs
like this.
I also love the concept behind the album, the idea of the stone
gargoyle trying to make sence and all that. One last thing,
Chris Olivia was the one who was killed correct? I saw a tribute
album to him, I can't remember which one died, if it was either
Chris or John but has anyone heard this album and is it worth
getting?
What's Savatage's older material like?

Okay, I realize these are all instrumental parts (except for the

To the Digital man; Sorry wedge, I over reacted also. As Rodney
King once said " Can't we all just get along ?"
Ernie, a click track is any choice of sounds. Neil Peart uses the
sound of a bass drum as a click. If you ever saw the video for GNR's
Sweet child song you hear a beeping sound that is also very popular
for a click sound. The clicks that I have used have been totally
separate from the recorded tracks. They are not the same as a scratch
track which is when the band records a vocal or guitar rhythm for the
purpose of song reference. At mix down time the scratch track is
removed. Normally when you use one, you don't use the other. I hope
that helps!
And the winner in the DT producer contest is !!!!!!!?????
Sorry folks, I just spoke with Kenny Myung and he said the Band
has not settled on a producer yet. Every rumor that we've heard has
been just that, A Rumor.

With all the talk about musicians and music being art, my mind started
wandering about, and I came up w/ some curious thoughts... warning, I'm in a
pseudo-meditating state:
First curious thought: I was thinking about how, throughout the history of
music, there has always been the 'serious' or classical music which was
usually heard by the upper class, and the folk music, which was mostly heard
by the common man. Rock was derived from a type of folk music, which was
the blues, which came the afro-american culture. Although at first, rock
was pretty much a faster, more energetic form of the blues, it started
growing and expanding, absorbing various musical styles, and branching out
into many sub-genres. Besides that, the radio and the TV were introduced
during this century, which helped rock become the most popular music in the
world (as far as I know). Thus, rock has become something more than folk
music, but still isn't at the high-standards of classical music(you know
what I mean). It sort of fills that gray area that was never there between
these two types of music. Or maybe it was there...I'm not a music
historian. The point is that IMO, we're living in a very important age in
music where all styles of music are starting to blend together, thanks to
the open-mindedness of rock... I'm not saying people don't classify music
anymore, but it's getting harder and harder to do so... don't you think?
Second curious thought: Isn't it weird how there are some people who don't
really find music that important. They just use it as a background for their
lives, but they never actually *listen* to it... strange...
Third curious thought: I dreamt I met Ben Laussade... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!:)

Art evolves naturally, just like everything else in this world... for
example DT was influenced by Rush, Rush by Led Zep, Led by those old blues
guys... when I listen to DT, I'm not only getting influenced by DT, but also
by Rush, LZ and the blues guys... get what I'm saying? ... I'm not saying
that learning from the past is bad; it is something which will enrich you're
creativity, but it is not necessary, because we're practically already doing
it naturally... besides, rock, classical, it's still the same damn 12 notes...:)

Ever heard of multiphonics? While you may not be able to get "chords" on
the saxophone per se, you can get multiple tones. Horn players also have
the ability to use circular breathing. Try translating that to guitar
without the aid of a Sustainac pickup.

It has been said that bands tend to sound like their influences on their
early albums. I&W was only the second album: they were still partially
forming their musical identity then. Awake demonstrated that DT was
indeed growing, and the future would continue in that "direction". DT
is probably finding their musical niche right now, and the albums from
here on should reflect that, whether they have a good or bad producer.

Broon wasn't the only factor. You have to realize that the band grew
musically, lyrically, and physically. They probably started playing
material that was more pleasing to them than say, the record company.
I'm not downplaying Broon's influence, but don't underestimate a band's
growth.

Makes sense to me, too. I'm a southpaw, and have been playing guitar the
"traditional" way for 8 years now. It really helped when I played
stand-up bass for orchestra in high school.
