    Hi there,

I have on my desk a fax right from Magna Carta, with the final track listing
of the Rush Tribute (release date: june 17, 96). Here it is:

Working man / By-Tor and the snow dog / Jacob's ladder / The analog kid / La
villa strangiato / YYZ / Natural science / Anthem / The trees / Mission /
Red barchetta / Freewill / Closer to the heart.

Not bad? And the list of the artists involved is very impressive:

Billy Shheehan / 3 guys from Shadow Gallery / Dean castronovo / Devin
Townsend / Eric Martin / Fates Warning / Dream Theater (except Derek) /
George Lynch / Jack Russell / Jake E Lee / James Murphy / Jens Johansen /
Mark Slaughter / Michael Romeo / Robert Berry / Sean Malone and Sean reinert
(ex-Cynic) / Sebastian Bach / Steve Morse / Stuart Hamm / Trent Gardner
    (Magellan) / Jeff Brockman (Cairo).

Derek will appear on the Jethro Tull tribute, still on MG (release date:
    june 03, 96).

    Can't wait...

The song was originally was recorded by Fleetwood Mac either in the
late 60's. This wasn't the poppy "Don't Stop" stuff that made them so
big in the 70's, this was back when Fleetwood Mac was a Rock 'N' Roll
band. There's a video out called "The Original Fleetwood Mac Live" that
has a lot of live clips of them back when they still knew how to rock.

Dave. You have KM's mono lead sound? Where? What keyboard? I'd bet money on
the DW8000. But, anyway, I want to know, because I like that sound a lot. If
you found that in the Roland, let me know. I have an XP50, and the sounds
would be close. Also use an Ensoniq TS10, but none of those sounds come close
to anything Kevin uses, although I know Shadow Gallery's keyboardist uses a
TS-10 or TS-12. Anyway, I am almost positive that 6:00 is an organ, maybe a
different sounding organ or a different distortion effect. At least in the
beginning. Maybe it's his lead sound running through a distortion effect, but
I doubt it. Kevin might have an outboard effects processor, so who knows
anymore what patches he is using. Somewhere in my XP50, I have the sound from
the beginning of LTL, but you have to play it with both hands to get it
right, which is probably what he does anyway. It's not completely impossible
that he is using an electric guitar patch, although I don't know Roland to be
good on distorted guitar patches. Might have come from a Korg 01W, which he
did use somewhere. I remember him saying something about that in an article.
I am also sure he used a D50. IN addition, he used a Roland JD800, because I
have an article with Derek that mentioned he received some RAM cards for
thed800 from Kevin, featuring that lead synth sound which you can hear in
ACOS right after the train part, as well as other places. I will have to
recheck that, though. Anyway, if you find out something else, let me know. I
think we are coming up with discrepancies on what keyboards Kevin uses
exactly. It is not impossible that Kevin used different setups between I&W,
    Awake and even WDADU.

No, Matt. The last song on Escape is not Open Arms. I can probably give you a
    few lines.

    Hey, mother, Father, .... I don'tremember exactly.

Don't you know that I'm alive for you?

It may be called Believe, but I don't know. Will have to check my Lyrics
directory on my hard drive for it. And by the way, Raised on Radio isn't that
horrible. Just compare it to what is popular now, and I think you will find a
new respect for it. Yeah, the songs are really sappy, but ... I ... uh ...
like ... uh that stuff. I grew up on that stuff. And I am not ashamed to
admit it. (Feel like the grown-up in the Frosted Flakes commercial). Yes,
it's cheesey. But there is great musicianship in that band, and I will take
Raised on Radio over green Day anyday of the week.

This just in from the latest issue of Metal Edge:

"Celebrity will get you everywhere, at least with the New Jersey
State Police, as SEBASTIAN BACH (Skid Row) found out the night he got
stopped for speeding and suspicion of DUI. Out for a night of fun with
DREAM THEATER'S JAMES LABRIE and DEREK SHERINIAN in his repaired Jaguar,
Bas was nearly done for- especially since he'd left his license and
registration at home- but the trooper let him off when he found out that
he'd stopped the singer of SKID ROW. 'He rips up the ticket and then he
tells me he has a lawn cutting service, and can he come to my house and
cut my lawn,' relates Bas. Fame definitely has it's rewards."

-I thought you guys would get a kick out of this.

It seems to me like everyone is accusing Jonathan Cain of being the
driving force behind Journey's direction into the pop and R&B material,
but I personally think it was more of the result of Steve Perry joining
the band. If you compare the first three albums (without Steve Perry) to
Infinity and beyond, you'll see an extreme jump from a progressive fusion
band employing odd time signatures and extreme instrumental passages to a
more straight-ahead rock direction. And I personally feel that Frontiers
was about the most jammin' album that Journey ever released, and it came
out AFTER Escape, WITH Jonathan Cain on the keys. But, that's just my
opinion, and I could be wrong.

I'll second the motion for "Beyond the Realms of Death"; also, how about "Victim
of Changes" (imagine James singing "whiskey woman don't you know that you are
driving me insane, ooohhhhh!). "Let us Prey" from Sin After Sin wouldn't be a
    bad choice either.

Speaking of Priest, I'm sure most of you have heard that Rob Halford is teaming
up with Tony Iommi for a new project. A buddy of mine saw Rob sing with Sabbath
when they opened up for Ozzy on the "No More Tours" tour (yeah, right) in So.
Cal. He said that it was a trip to see Halford sing "Children of the Sea" and
other Sabbath classics, but it sounded really good.

    hasta.

    Go Lakers, Go Dodgers!

    BABS babbled:

"Green Manilishi (spelling?) I think that James could do a fantastic job
singing it. As for Derek - well, I heard a rumor a long time ago that
Fleetwood Mac originally did Green Manilishi, so there has to be room for
    keyboards in some capacity..."

Well, FM did a song of the same name, but, it is not the same song.

In purchasing the Weird Al Yankovic box set "Al in the Box", I started
thinking about which would be the best Weird Al original DT could cover. I
came up with "Dare to be Stupid"! Man, I can hear it now...whoa!

these dudes are about the only great st louis band i've ever seen make
it. incredible guys, my bud just got another one of theirs at some cd
shop here (i'm in st louie btw) which happened to be located on the
same street their albums were done, and a guy in the store (its kind of
a metal store, pretty bitchin') knew the guys and all and just talked
for a sec. pretty cool, check these guys out!

on one final note i just picked up Savatage's Streets in that used cd
shop (you can just find EVERYTHING there :) and what i've had a chance
to listen to so far is great, i could very much see that one on stage.
