Hey, whoever posted the "Unofficial Track Listing" for the Rush Tribute...
that was pretty funny. The most obscure, least-liked tracks, huh? I
almost believed it, too, until I got to the bottom and you said something
like "And my personal favorite, Speed Of Love."

    Lovin' the humor around here...

THERE IS A POINT TO THIS, BEAR WITH ME....
(apologies in advance in any newbies start in w/ Top-X lists)
Circa 1990 or so, my fave bands were U2, Queen, Heart, Rush, Def Leppard
Circa NOW, my top tier looks like: Rush, DT, QR, echolyn and Yes

My question: SO, is my musical taste improving, or am I just becoming
    more narrow-minded?
Why do I ask? Basically, someone was trying to convince me of the
merits of Hootie, and I totally refused to listen to her
But I thought about it later, and actually listened to "Cracked Rear
View" end to end for the first time, and while I still hate it, I have to
wonder now, everytime I hear Hootie on the radio, (which is far too often)
whether or not I would have liked that band if they had come out 5 years
earlier.....and that is a scary thought.....

Does listening to DT/Rush/QR totally kill a taste for 'simpler' pleasures?

    Hiya,
As to Dead Winter Dead sounding like Les Miserables (My fav musical
tied with Miss Saigon), I say that is exactly what I thought when I heard
it. Is "I Am" and "Doesn't Matter Anyway" Thenardier or what?!! The
breakdown at the end od "I am" is sooooo stage oriented I can almost see
the barracades (anyone who has seen Les Miserables will know what I'm
talking about) turning and rotating about the stage. "One Child" and "Not
What you See"'s vocal harmonies and interplay are VERY reminescent of the
confrontation between Jean Val Jean and Javert after JVJ has revelead
himself as 24601 and he is trying to get to Cosette (is it just me or does
Cosette make anyone else queasy?) to fulfill Fontine's last request. "Dead
Winter Dead", 'Mozart and Madness" and "Starlight" are the Battle Hymms
such as "Red, the Color of Angry Men; I can see the armies attacking each
other, the screams of the dying, the cries of friends discovering fallen
comrades. DWD is a great rendition of a modern Les Miserables or even Miss
Saigon (deals with Vietnam, sort of Madame Butterfly). "One Child" also
reminds me of the scene where Eponine lies dying and is asking for Marius
to leave a kiss on her forehead after she is dead. I absolutely fell in
love with Eponine at that point in the play. DWD is great stuff, if you
like Dt and Les Miserables, I'd strongly advise you to check out DWD, Great
stuff, very touching. Anybody who doesn't cry when JVJ dies in Cosette's
    arms is not human.
I just gave the abridged version of the book to my girlfriend. So
far she absolutely loves it, it's great reading. I do not advise reading
the unabrdiged version as it goes off on tangents that have nothing to do
with the story, ie 200 pages about Napolianic battle stratagy.

    Cheers and happy listening!!!!

Open Arms is DEFINITELY the last song on 'Escape.' If you doubt
my knowledge on this subject, ask Digital Man. He can tell you just how
    much I know about Journey...

Mother, Father... is the second to last song on Escape.

In reference to Cain vs. Rolie...I don't really think Jon Cain
was a 'driving' force behind the band....BUT .... JOn Cain added
something to the group never heard before....Before he entered the
group, Journey's lyrics were very abstract...Jon Cain brought the fans
into the lyrics...something a lot of bands seem to forget...

example ..."Just a City boy..." Dont Stop Believing, 1981

I can also say that Rolie also contributed to alot of bad vibes
in the band....He was going to be a part of this ReUnion effort but
backed out when Steve Perry joined in,...
Perry and Rolie never got along and Rolie was a bitch during band
practices....Im SURE that detracted from creativity....

Plus...for the one that started rattling off that frontiers was a
    more successful album....
Journey's highest album on the charts was Escape (#2)
Frontiers reached 10 or 12 or something like that..

Escape clearly redefined that band, and Jon Cain was extremely
    instrumental in that re-definition.

The new issue of Metal Edge also has an interview and track-by-track breakdown of Mr. Big's new album "Hey Man." Here's what was mentioned about the Rush Tribute:

"Billy recorded five tracks for a Rush tribute album with Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy for Shrapnel Records. 'Mike knew the Rush stuff really well. I love Geddy Lee and Rush, but I never listened to it a lot and I had to learn the parts' [Billy Sheehan] notes. 'We learned it note for note and then messed around with it. I've heard a tape of just the bass and drums and it came out really cool. I hope Varney doesn't layer a million guitars over it and ruin it.'"

Paul Gilbert! A monster! A terrifying monster! I found "Lean Into It" at a used cd store two days ago, ran home and transcribed the solo to "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy," then proceeded to curse Paul Gilbert aloud for his inhuman precision!! I didn't post the solo here because everyone on this list is human, so none of you would be able to play it!! DAAAAMN THAT TERRIFYINGLY FAST PAUL GILBERT!!

So, like, when's his cd-rom coming out? :)

    Bafu Vai

    p.s. John Petrucci rules.

    p.p.s. no I can't play that solo.

    p.p.p.s. yet.
