    Hello Jason!

    >1) Why does the band not want to work with David Prater again, when he
    >produced their most successful album..?
    >And I'm not just talking about Mike here. I know he was unsatisified with
    >his sound, but what do the other members think...?

I asked John Petrucci and Mike about all this production stuff. John likes the
IAW production best, including the triggers (!), but ACOS didn't come out as
he wanted. Mike was very unhappy about the triggers, as we all know, and likes
the ACOS DRUM sound a lot better. Asked about the overall production of ACOS
he said, we should take it as an document, he's just happy that they recorded
    it...

But it's not only the sound that matters. Prater seems to be a quite difficult
person, during the IAW sessions Mike and Kevin had a lot of problems with him.
Surprising enough that during the recording of ACOS Mike was the one who got
along best with Prater while this time all others seemed to have problems.
    Somehow quite difficult person...

    >2) Were they unhappy with the production on AWAKE..?

I don't think Mike was, John still likes IAW better, but haven't asked them
    directly about Awake.

    >3) Once and for all, do we know for fact who will be producing the next
    >album...?

No. At least I don't know. Do you?

JUDAS PRIEST TRIBUTE: Who needs a song with keyboards in it for Derek? Think
of all these double guitars Judas Priest played. Derek could do a fine "second
guitar" on the keys instead of just playing boring chords on one of the
"softer" JP songs. He did that for Kiss and Alice Cooper long enough!

Hey there, fellow jammers, I am thinking of buying a new guitar and am
now faced with a difficult decision: should I buy the Ibanez Universe
(7-string) or the JPM-100? I understand both are in the same price range
(~$1500) and I can't decide. The 7-str. would give me more flexibility
(I have already written some pretty cool 7-str. riffs) and most
importanntly (YKYADTF :) allow me to play most of DT's music. The
JPM-100 is simply a great guitar (besides the fact that it's a JOHN
PETRUCCI!!), and is worth the money (right now I have a Jackson JDR-94,
altho I think they changed the model number to PS-4). OK, I'll stop
now. This message has wasted enough bandwith as it is. Damn, my posts
are always longer than they need to be. (And my history teacher thinks I
write concisely! :) Anyways, I ask your help, but please e-mail me
    privately.

    Later,

Just a lie. I stayed home and read the Jam! Really, though, there are a few points:

Yes, Kev used a JD-800, not a JV-900, which doesn't exist. :) The JD-800 had about 50,000 buttons and sliders on it, and Kev could have used them realtime to do some amazing things that very few other synths could have done. I think that's part of the problem in recreating the sounds. SInce there's no universal synth programming language that can help translate sounds form one board to another, we just have to guess.

Here's another vote for DWD is similar to Les Mis thread. (BTW, it's Fantine, not Fontine) Very few theatre experiences can compare with seeing Les Mis 3rd row center...

Damn it, there was something else I wanted to say! Grrr... That's what I get for reading all the jams THEN replying instead of replying as I think of things to say. :P

Time for my once-a-week post. :) (I must have placed pretty far down on that posting-frequency list....I'll have to work back up to semi-DreamNDay levels. :))

What is the derivation of "Angra"? Anyone know? It keeps cropping up in an invocation in the book I'm reading now (STALKING TENDER PREY by Storm Constantine, folks in the US will have a hard time finding it :)) and since it's at the beginning of the phrase and always capitalized, I can't tell if it's just a word or a proper noun. The invocation is either ancient Sumerian or possibly more arcane....or maybe the author likes Angra, since she's into the rock scene, has worked with Christian Death and Fields of the Nephilim, and manages the UK band Empyrean. (She's neet and I like her gothic writing style -- more info see www.crl.com/~vanyel/enchantm.html.)

That guy who posted the two posts in ALL CAPS LIKE THIS got us all drunk (or in my case, punch-drunk) on our favorite beverages thanks to the Ytsejam Drinking Game. He mispelled Dream TheatER -and- didn't abbreviate it DT, he posted twice, he posted iun all-caps, he posted as if he was writing directly to the band (and maybe he is, hi there Kevin L. :)), and other heinous crimes.... ..so, we have come here to praise the newbie, not to bury him. Yet. :)

BTW, sorry for my 'kids have taken over' message of 200 Jams ago (not quite but it seems that way :)).... I was responding mostly to the two guys who were yakking about eachother's asses, or something. The signal-to-noise ratio has gotten better in the last week, too, so give yourselves a hand. Or indeed an entire forearm. :)

Hello to all the IRCers.... We've really started establishing ourselves on irc.dreamt.org:2112 and seldom does a night go by with less than 5 or 6 people......and our current record is nineteen users on at once!

BafuVai, Skadz and Samsonite have gotten copies of a certain demo tape from me and all have liked it, so I'll go ahead and offer it to the world at large. :) It's a 7-song dub of my friends' band Bonedance, from Atlanta. They sound like a Korn/Rage Against the Machine hybrid with other influences -- not prog per se, but, well, the kidz seem to like it. :) It's NOT DT, so don't be expecting virtuoso performances from these 20-yr olds, but they're good on tape and positively mesmerizing live. If you'd like a copy, mostly for grins (although they ARE shopping for a promo-pack deal and a record deal :)), the cost in the US will be $5 ($2 for tape, $3 for 2-day Priority Mail). Send email to vanyel@crl.com or check my home-page (below) for the postal address.

It's my sad duty to announce another victim of the 1996 Olympic Summer Games. The Wreck Room, my nighttime haunt for almost 2 years now and the practice-space for a number of really good and cool bands (including Bonedance and Early Warning) will host its last pre-Olympics show on April 30th. The owner of the property (the entire block) is leasing out everything to Olympic corporate users and all 14 practice bands have to be out by April 28th. The combination of bands playing and practice bands hanging out plus the venue's laid-back style and unpretentiousness made it the _de-facto_ center of hard rock music in this town for 8 years -- longest operating small club in the city now -- and we'll feel its loss greatly. They MAY be able to reopen after the Games, but a good part of the magic will be gone.

*sigh* I feel like a friend is slipping into a coma. Sorry about the eulogy. :(

I get the same crap from my friends, and we're 15. The complaint I hate the most is that James sings like a girl. They also give me the same crap about Geoff Tate and Ray Alder. I think it's because they all have range higher Eddie Vedder, that and they actually sing. Ray Alder goes nuts with his range on Perfect Symmetry, "Mock integriteeeeeee, bold hypocricy!!!!" heheh.

Something I'm sick of in the guitar industry is that anybody who plays well is lumped into the category of shredders, and therefore he sucks and only can play fast. I tried playing my friends the brilliant solo's in Monument, and JP's second solo in Lie. They gave me the same old story and it pisses me off. Just because they play more than boring pentatonic stuff. ARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgg.

Steve- Mindcrime-ish?? Well, I think it sounds a lot better than mindcrime does, at least production-wise, and the music is really good, I think. The guitars have some early-QR muted double leads and so on, but totally, I highly suggest getting the cd. _____________________________________________

Steve- I just listened to STP's purple disc yesterday. I really think some of the songs on there are alright (I still like DT is better....duh!!). I don't mind saying I like Stone Temple Pilots. I'm not ashamed to say I still like pearl Jam's TEN disc. I won't lie about the fact that I own ALL of the Alice in Chains CD's. SO WHAT?? I know, it wasn't an issue.

anyway......right now I'm listening to the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Botique". It's close to 70 (in WI that's warm) and the clouds are rolling in :(

One more thing..........Who out there has: the Yes Tribute the Pink Floyd Tribute the Genesis Tribute???

I've got the first 2, and can never find the Genesis one. Is it worth the trouble of ordering?? _____________________________________________

I'm sorry I have to do this, but it's time for a 'Most Frequent Poster'-recount...

When I wrote my little 'YtsePost counter' I forgot one thing... People sometimes change their name/description when they send a message. Instead of counting posts with the same 'From:' line it should count posts send from the same E-mail address...

For instance, Ben posted several different ways: 5. Ben Laussade <laussade@enet.net> (72) 37. laussade@enet.net (The Ytsejammer from Hell) (10) 39. Baldy <laussade@enet.net> (8)

On the first top-10 list they were treated as different people. Here's the new list (digests 1164 - 1429):

    1. DreamNDay@aol.com (Our friend Brian) (178) 2. response@ibmmail.com (171) 3. s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu (Damon M. Fibraio) (115) 4. laussade@enet.net (Ben Laussade) (109) 5. magellan@u.washington.edu (Steve Borzilleri) (81) 6. WildKoba@aol.com (dk) (65) 7. cmerlo@cs.uvm.edu (Christopher R. Merlo) (53) 8. skooc@ix.netcom.com (Scott Cook) (52) 9. c675311@everest.cclabs.missouri.edu (Pat Griffin) (47) 10. durnik@indirect.com (Michael Bahr) (46)

Wow, that was even more exciting than the first top-10 ! "Response@ibmmail.com" almost kicked Brian from the nr. 1 spot ! Steve and Damon switched places. Pat moved down from 8 to 9. Scott came in at 8, thus kicking KTYA28B@prodigy.com of the list (dropped to 11). Sorry Ben, you're still at number 4 !

I'll be posting a monthly top-10 list, unless you guys don't want me to...

BTW, I got some request from my 'Mailinglist reader'. The thing is, it's just something I threw together in a couple of hours. I wrote it for my own personal use, which means it's not (yet) bugfree. It works just fine on my PC, but I'll have to rewrite it first, before I can make it available to others... If only I had the time...

    To Jon Goad: (no DTC)

Phantom power is a 48V microphone power for certain boosts in overall performance. Most decent (newer) mixing boards will have a button or switch which enables the phantom power to all XLR inputs.

Microphones that can use P.P. don't NEED it to work, but it is like haveing active electronics in a guitar pick-up with out a 9V battery if you dont use it.

to put it in lamens terms, if you buy a $300+ mic, that requires Phantom Power and you dont use it, you may as well be using a Radio Shack mic.

    Hey all,

I just wanted to point everyone to somebody's web site I found that has a bunch of MIDI sequences of progressive music. There's a sequence of Pull Me Under that is _REALLY_ well done; one of the best sequences I've heard of a "heavy" song. This rocks on my SCC-1. There's also a sequence of Take the Time, but it bites pretty bad.

I haven't had a chance to download any others, but there are songs from Yes, ELP, King Crimson, etc. Check it out!

    http://sunrise.sote.hu/~kepenu/midi.html

As with all MIDIs, you'll get the best effect with a wavetable sound card.

    Happy 'jamming!
