The last couple of days have been absolutely great. Friday, I got
Sting tickets for Cleveland and Columbus. Saturday, I got my latest
MST3K info Club newsletter. Sunday night, I got to see B.B. King in concert
in Cleveland. Oh man, I hope I can still wail like that at 35, let alone
70! Finally, I got my AQ and the latest issue of Rolling Stone today.
In it, there is an article on my man Vernon Reid: his album is supposed
to come out in May. To give you some idea of my joy, imagine if DT's
next album is coming out in May, and that's how I felt. Anyway, the reason
I'm posting is because of a couple of things in the latest issue (May 1996)
    of Guitar World.
First, it said in the Whammy Bar that "Relativity Records
recently dropped its entire roster of rock artists and supporting staff
in hopes of positioning itself as a force on the rap music market. Among
the artists dropped were Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Gov't Mule (featuring
Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes), Alligator Gun, and
Smackmelon. Reportedly, Satriani has relocated to Epic Records, while
many of the other displaced artists are also 'looking for a home in the
Sony family,' says Relativity spokeswoman Kerry Cooley. Vai's management
politely declined to comment about the guitarist's plans, but confirmed
that he is still hard at work on a new album." Comments? Criticism?
    Subscription info? (just kidding)
Speaking of Satriani, do any Michigan 'Jammers know if tickets
are still available for the Detroit show? The Cleveland and Columbus
shows are sold out, much to my dismay.
Second, there was an advertisement from Note Service Music
featuring JP's Rock Discipline video. It's $49.95, and shipping is $5.00
for U.S., and $6.00 outside the U.S. Their phone number is 1-800-628-1528,
extension 214 or 215. A while back, some 'Jammers had trouble finding it,
    I hope this helps.
Finally, AQ is great. Acoustic Dreams was my favorite Prism
Records release, until now. Great collection of songs and packaging.
The 2 skulls kind of remind me of Pushead's "Sad But True" skull design
for Metallica. Anyway, Mr. Bahr seems to be one of the few artisans who
have eliminated the dichotomy that arises between quality and quantity.
Besides, anybody in a band named Scoobacca has to be doing something right!

                                                            Sincerely,

                                                            G. Jack Thetgyi

Ugh...thus begins the flamewar. For those of you who haven't gone to the
newsgroup and checked it out, there's a heated, moronic, useless, childish
disc^H^H^H^Hflamefest going on in r.m.a.q. about DT vs. QR. Although I'm a
huge fan of Queensryche, the metalheads who inhabit that newsgroup really need
to get a life. I'm just glad the 'jam isn't inhabited by such narrow-minded
worshipping zealots (er, excuse me a moment while I finish my sacrifice to the
    gods of Dream Theater <g>).

Maybe someone oughta go over there and post a dialogue between the Queen and
the Ryche or something; nah, they probably wouldn't get it.

All I can say is, long live the 'jam.

Well the local commercial (Madison, Wi for the Milwaukee show) on the radio says that Tommy Shaw is playing with them. I think that most people consider Tommy Shaw an original member probably because they gained more popularity with him. Even better news... at least for the Milwaukee show (Marcus Ampitheater, May 31 I think) is that KANSAS, yes Kansas is opening. :-)

I think I'll have to go to this one... And for you Wisconsin DT fans, maybe we can get the summerfest people to get DT back, for a "Lords of Sound II" NOW that would rule!

The songs were "Some Like It Hot" ('feel the heat was in the chorus'), and yes "Get It On (Bang A Gong). The members (as I dig out my cassette tape and blow the dust off) are: Robert Palmer John Taylor Andy Taylor Tony Thompson

The Album came out in 1985. So can anyone make a DT connection somewhere here? I haven't put any thought into it... but I'm sure there is something there.. We got Michael Bolton earlier, didn't we? Yikes!

I'm just cleaning out the ol' e-mail box here, and I figured I'd write in a few things I thought you'd all enjoy knowing.

First off, there's a big news thingy coming up soon. The prices of all my CDs will be DROPPING. Probably beginning with the first CD _after_ Critical Mass. I'm attempting to change suppliers.. it will be a slow process of hammering out the deal that lets me do my work without making them liable, but I think I can make it happen. I can't say what the prices will drop to until I know what sort of terms we end up making. Just think though... to $20 would be a nice price cut, but I am thinking more along the lines of $16 or even $13 if possible. If I manage to drop it to $10 (which would take INCREDIBLE grace on their part and damn large print runs on my part to make it up in volume) I imagine most of you will be pretty happy. The beauty of it is, once a CD print run is sold out, it will likely accumulate value at the same rate as Subcon and Acoustic Dreams did, assuming I make a good CD. :) If I fail to change suppliers, I cannot guarantee a price cut, but at the very least, I shall _never_ raise my prices without considerable circumstance requiring it (such as a sudden plummet of the value of the dollar or something).

ANTIQUITIES: Thank you all so _very_ much for so vocally approving of my creation!! I just thought you'd all like to know that beginning as soon as the first reviews hit the Jam, I have had a flood of reservations like you wouldn't believe! In the space of about 8 days, Antiquities is well on the way to selling out. I've got about 440 copies of AQ reserved away already (about half of those are paid and shipped). I can see another Acoustic Dreams situation happening here. I urge those of you who want this keepsake for your own enjoyment to get one before they're gone. I have all of you to thank for this phenomenon with AQ. Your good word can literally sell out a CD, and your disapproval can slow sales to a crawl. Fortunately, that's not been a situation I've had to deal with so far.

OK, I've worked out a deal that will let people buy multiple copies at a small discount for fans in their area, of my CDs. I hope this is something that is fair for everyone. I've carefully considered it, and though I have no way of enforcing this, I would ask that the only condition be that you re-sell these at or below the $25 original price. I will only charge $20 per CD, so you can make $100 profit on a case. I understand, however, if you wish to price the rarer CDs slightly higher. I just discourage it, in the name of fair play and honesty. In some cases, I've bought back CDs from friends to make these available. Also, my finally receiving the box with the last 50 copies of Cygnus (out of the print run of 1000) sort of helped. :)

The case assortments are as follows:

    Case Type A - $400 - 3 available. 7 x Dream Theater "When Dream And Today Unite" 6 x Dream Theater "Antiquities" 6 x Rush "Cygnus"

    Case Type B - $400 - 2 available.

9 x Rush "Cygnus" 5 x Dream Theater "When Dream And Today Unite" 5 x Dream Theater "Antiquities" 1 x Dream Theater "Acoustic Dreams" either #009 or #192

    Case Type C - $400 - 1 available.

9 x Rush "Cygnus" 5 x Dream Theater "When Dream And Today Unite" 5 x Dream Theater "Antiquities" 1 x Dream Theater "Subconscious" #455

I know that some of the Jammers in Europe have already bought in quantity from me to sell within their homeland to those without Internet access. I hope all has gone well with these efforts. All of these cases will be available beginning late this week when the WDATU 501-1000 arrive. Please let me know if you'd like to purchase one. This is available, even to USA Jammers, since not all areas of the US are strong with internet access.

OK, I think that covers all the stuff I wa... oh yeah, one more thing. Someone asked about rare errors with my Cd runs. Here are all the rare CDs I am aware of.

Antiquities - none. No prototypes were made. The CD liner notes have Don't Look Past Me and ACOS switched... all are like that. If your CD case liner (the factory printed one) has that error, let me know.

When Dream And Today Unite - 3 prototypes were made. They are owned by David Fox, Brandon Beach, and Robert Dalton. Also, after the first 100 copies, Dream Theater asked me not to sign their CDs, but to number them only. So copies 101-500 are only numbered and not signed.

Acoustic Dreams - almost 20 prototypes were made. They may not be as rare as the WDATU protos, but the rarity of AD discs of any type applies to them as well. I had severe print run problems... about 10 defective discs. They got their act together at the factory and I have far fewer now. My CDs are 100% guaranteed... I replace for free all defects if you discover them while I still have that CD to send. Also, 2 CDs in the print run are signed in gold. I chose them at random, just to throw the element of fun into things. The rest are signed in silver. Finally, an incorrectly-mixed canister of paint left about 7 copies far darker grey than the other 490+ copies. I forget which numbers I gave them.

Cygnus - No prototypes were run. 10 copies are signed and numbered in gold a la Subcon. Numbers 001-010 naturally. the rest are not numbered.

Subconscious - around 5 prototypes were made. I forget who all has 'em. There are three CDs in the print run that were signed by people other than me, making them only marginally more desirable, but interesting and different nonetheless. There is 1 unique rare piece: the gold premaster with the original (never-again used) mix of the audio, numbered #000, and is owned by Ed Polzin (I think). It is definitely the gem of DT collectibles. I cannot even estimate its likely resale price. Suffice it to say that if Ed needs money in a pinch, we may only then find out.

Take care everybody! Back to answering all of your e-mail!! :)

I thought the list of people who posts the much was great. It shows how many people, er, how the same people make up the Jam. I know a lot of people that don't even read it anymore because they know it will be the same people posting (i.e. DreamnDay). As much as it may hurt some of you, a lot of people think the whole musician thing is just stupid. Granted it could be a topic for a couple posts, but for a week or two? Its like having a discussion of what your favorite subject was back in grade school and then trying to prove why that should be the universal favorite subject. As much as I'm bitching, I still like the Jam because there is always the small chance I find something out about DT after skimming all the posts.

The CD sales are pretty much closed now, as bidding has become fairly high. Instrumental I and II, the Majesty Demo, and Kick into a Dream are already gone. Subcon and AD are in final stages and will be gone by tomorrow. First $25 takes Milan '93 (same as Lost in the Sky).

    Great cd!

The 4 live tracks are great quality.

What other songs were done at the Marquee when LATM was recorded?

Steve Stone (is that his name or am I thinking of a former Oriole or both?) to me doesn't sound like David Coverdale at all. To each his own though.

About John Arch's singing. Obviously the two tracks are not professionally recorded. The vocals sound much louder than the music. Who can say what it would sound like if it had been professionally recorded in a studio.

If John Arch told DT he didn't want it recorded then who's to say DT even did? It was more than likely someone else who was there who recorded it. It does sound like it was recorded with a boom box.

John Arch is a good singer. To me old Fates sounds like Iron Maiden in a way. I like Fates a whole lot better though.

Greetings fellow 'jammers...I caught a little bit of Satch on RockLine last night...what a guy...my guitar hero!

Anyway, 'nuff of that...somebody might start flaming my ass for not saying that JP is my guitar hero! Anyhoo, I was down the the HMV superstore on Yonge St. on the weekend and finally found the SM single...YAAAAAAHOOOOOO! YKYAADTFW you pay $45 Canadian for InstruMENTAL! I can't believe HMV had this on the shelf...Isn't this a quasi-bootleg type thing? I had also picked up the Majesty Demo there a while back...same large price too!

Eve is not what I expected at all from DT...very mellow...however, a very beautiful piece of music.

I downloaded the ChromaKey samples...didn't like them at all...very lame vocals...I just don't like where Kevin Moore is headed, but best of luck to him...I still think he was a great asset to DT's chemistry.

    Later,

    Greg.

wow. i didn't know someone was counting how many times we post onto the jam. yow. maybe i should stop.

but before i do, i have a serious question: can anyone (esp. keyboardists who have korgs or rolands) identify the sounds that kevin uses on a) i call it the plunky string sound, he uses it on pmu, in the beginning when he does that cool 16th note riff and on surrounded. b) the distorted guitar-like sound he uses on his solo in scarred, and i hear him use it as a sound while jp solos in ytsejam on lit. i'm pretty sure it's not the same distorted guitar he uses on 6:00, cause it's a lot thicker, and sounds really flanged (i also own a korg and have the "6:00 sound").

any help would be loved. thanks.

Greg Rolie, although he is a great key man and singer, I feel he has a bad luck touch....He's got a bad attitude and wasnt willing to share the stage with Steve Perry...and I don't think Rolie had the right to challenge Steve Perry to who had rights to center stage. Regardless of what anyone will think, Steve Perry changed singing in rock music almost as much as Eddie Van Halen changed Rock guitar...till about 1993 almost every singer out there was copying some aspect of Perry's vox style...

Greg couldn't handle not being the top man anymore in Journey...(Greg Rolie was the lead singer of Journey from 1971-1977)

Anyway, Jonathan Cain is a better songwriter, a better singer, a better guitarist, and a nicer more humble man than Rolie ever was.

Fates is in the process of putting together their next album which is supposed to be recorded in May. It is true that guitarist Frank Aresti is out of the band but drummer Mark Zonder is still definitely in but bass player Joe DiBiase is out. The band just recorded a song, "Closer To The Heart" with Joey Vera (ex-Armored Saint bass player) for the Rush tribute album on Shrapnel/Magna Carta. Fates Warning also look set to do a cover of a Judas Priest tune for the Priest tribute coming this summer on Century Media. The new album which will probably be out at the end of the year or maybe even first thing in '97 and is one song broken down into various pieces. It's sounds very cool and I can't wait to hear it.

--------------- What's up with the big lineup changes?

Well I guess the super group idea for the Rush Tribute is just a rumor.

I am sorry to bother the list with this, but I have sent a couple of messages directly to Mike Bahr about this and still have not received a reply.

I still have not gotten my CDs yet. I would like to know what the holdup is. (Especially since you have cashed my check already.)
