i guess there must be. the Braindance i referred to has two cd's out,
"shadows" and "fear itself". they're unsigned and it's my understanding
that they're from new york. while the guitarist and keyboardist are women,
the singer is not. BTW, the guitarist absolutely kicks ass, IMO. this
band is kind of a cross between pink floyd and dream theater. actually,
that's not entirely accurate, but it's really hard to describe them. they
describe themselves as "progessive new age gothic metal fusion".

and hey, don't feel bad. i've spent money on cd's that jammers recommended
that i didn't like. but about 80% of the ones i do buy strictly on a
    jammer's recommendation i've liked. jammers are cool. huh-huh. :)

sorry to bring up an old thread, but i gotta question for your
    drummers out there.....

i'm curious about drum triggers. do they make triggers for cymbals?
i'm assuming that on I&W *all* of the drum sounds are triggers,
    correct?

hope this isn't a stupid question, but i'm just real curious.

    >Do you mean more than one sound at the same time? (To answer, no, I've not
    >heard the term "multiphonic")

Multiphonics means playing more than one tone or sound at a time. It can be
done on a saxophone. And without an Eventide Harmonizer.

    >Are any Jammers opposed to bootlegs?

Being a fan of the Dave Matthews Band, I have a love/hate relationship
with bootlegs. DMB condones bootlegs and actively asks fans where
bootlegs of their performances are sold. They allow taping at their
shows, but they want fans to distribute the tapes among themselves, and
not let a third party make money off of overpriced CD bootlegs. On the
other hand, I approve of Mike Bahr's releases because they're well made
and he probably breaks even financially. Also, my favorite band, Living
Colour, is no longer around, so the only way I can get more recordings of
them are via bootlegs. So, in conclusion, bootlegs amongst fans are good,
overpriced bootlegs from greedy companies aren't.

    >And about that demo buttons on keyboards? Get real, man. You are
    >thinking of those $300 casios...These are not instruments, they are
    >toys. I was not referring to toys. Anybody who plays on those things is
    >just messing around in peewee ball.

They may be toys, but they're still labeled "keyboards". There really
isn't an equivalent on the guitar, toy-wise, maybe a Fisher-Price "My
First Guitar"? Complete with Picasso graphic, certificate, and peewee
ball membership (smiley face). BTW, where have you been, Damon? "Aimin'
Damon Doo, where are you? we've got some 'Jams for you now". Same goes
for DreamNDay. I don't want clones, I want the real thing(s)!

    >>solo, none of them.
    >
    >I just wonder how many Rush CD's this guy has heard to come up w/ such a
    >dumb statement...

As long and "self-indulgent" as Rush's longer songs are, they _don't_
spend half a song on solos, excluding instrumentals. I'd say from Moving
Pictures on, there's more of Geddy's banshee (vocal) wailing then Alex's
    guitar wailing.

    >Subject: DT a bunch of wankers?
    >I found this nice little article on rec.music.artists.queensryche
    >and thought it a bit interesting and that maybe someone would want to
    >comment on the content included...

Somebody besides me used the dreaded "w" word? Anyway, to each his (or
her) own. I like QR more than DT. The author of the aforementioned
article has some valid points, however, his invalid points leave much to
be desired. Some of you will like DT more than QR. Some of you will
like QR more than DT. Some of you will like both bands about the same.
Whatever the case, enjoy your commonalitites and respect your differences.

    >As much as it may hurt some of you, a lot of people think the whole

    Any questions?

    >mind we should pick a song that Derek can play a part in...

    >My question: SO, is my musical taste improving, or am I just becoming
    >more narrow-minded? Why do I ask? Basically, someone was trying to
    >convince me of the merits of Hootie, and I totally refused to listen to her
    >But I thought about it later, and actually listened to "Cracked Rear
    >View" end to end for the first time, and while I still hate it, I have
    >to wonder now, everytime I hear Hootie on the radio, (which is far too
    >often) whether or not I would have liked that band if they had come out 5
    >years earlier.....and that is a scary thought.....Does listening to
    >DT/Rush/QR totally kill a taste for >'simpler' pleasures?

Fight the narrow-mindedness. Being on the 'Jam, you read and hear about
all these great prog-bands, and that just adds to the "narrow-mindedness",
IMO. I'm not saying to not listen to more prog bands, but there's more to
life than prog. A couple of years ago, I would get stuck into ruts where all
I could listen was metal. If it wasn't metal, I wouldn't listen to it.
Then I rediscovered jazz. Thank goodness, because that in turn made it
easier for me to listen to and enjoy all genres of music. I think I outgrew
the whole metal phase, although I still like Metallica. Being a guitar player
makes it worse, because there's all these great guitarists out there to listen
to, and there's all these other instrumentalists (i.e. pianists, horn players)
who you end up not listening to. I'd say to find a proper balance. If all
you want to listen to is DT and/or prog, fine. But don't criticize other
people for liking non-prog styles of music, i.e. country and rap. As far
as Hootie goes, while I'm not a big fan of their music, I have a great
deal of respect for them. It's refreshing to see a black male _rock_
vocalist receiving critical and popular acclaim. I'm not forgetting
Corey Glover or Doug Pinnick, but neither Living Colour or King's X
had/have the same scope of commercial success as Hootie.

    >the seinfeld bassist sounds like a synthesizer to me. doubt it's real at

Yeah, but that synthesizer doesn't sound like a pick or fingerstyle. I
think it's got great 4-toe technique.

    >I have a question about cd quality. I know that analog tapes diminish in
    >sound quality the more you listen to the and the older they are. Does
    >the same thing happen to cds?

I was not aware of this. I thought the general rule of thumb was that
CDs will "last a lifetime" as long as they are stored properly. By
"storing properly", I mean no dust, scratches, fingerprints, cigarette
smoke, extreme temperatures, liquids, scalding hot Tang, usage as beverage
coasters, or substitute frisbees. As far as gold CDs, I've never owned
or listened to one, so I can't say. BTW, John Shaft (or is it Richard
Roundtree?), Isaac Hayes will be on Late Night with Conan O'Brien
tomorrow night (April 18). Get out those wah-wah pedals!

    >Miles Davis- Bitches Brew: Didn't like it at all... is all his stuff
    >like this?

No! Miles is the man! Check out "Birth of the Cool", or "Kind of Blue"
as far as his earlier work. Michael Wilton of Queensryche lists Miles'
"Aura" album as one of his favorites: I haven't heard it yet, but it's
on the way from Columbia House. I had an opportunity to see Miles live
in 1991 as part of the Tri-C JazzFest, and I didn't go. I'm still
kicking myself for not seeing him! Check out as many of Miles' works as
you can, from his different periods. I like his early material the best.

    >You guys want a serious adrenaline rush? Read 'Anthem' by Ayn Rand and then

I like listening to Rollins Band's "Weight" or Rush's "Dreamline" to get

    Hi all

well, it's been nearly two weeks now, and not one single post to the jam about it. I'm really dissappointed, especially by the US jammers. "What is this guy going on about?" I hear you say. Obvious: the arrest of the una-bomber suspect Theodore Kaczynski.

Remember when the verdict in the O. J. Simpson trial was announced: the jam was full of indignant comments about how bad the US justice system/society was etc. Just a simple murder case that didn't really involve or affect any of us, and the jams were full of it. Along comes the una-bomber (assuming he and Kaczynski are one and the same), who has lots of things to say about the technological society (of which we are all part), computers (which we all use, or how do you get the jam?), and the entertainment industry including music (which we all listen to) and the response from the jam is - deafening silence.

Don't get me wrong: I don't agree with this guy's methods, although I do sometimes get the urge to grab a machine gun and go to the nearest McDonalds. But some of the things this guy had to say struck a chord in me, and I'm really surprised that nobody else on the jam (especially from stateside) had any thoughts about it: there has been a lot said here about liking the lyrics of Dream Theater's music because they attempt to point to new ways of life in our society and how to improve things, and this is also what the una-bomber was trying to do, even if some of his conclusions were somewhat strange and his methods were abhorrent. I just find this silence odd, especially considering what the una-bomber has to say about technology/computers (including Internet, which a lot of us use) and the entertainment industry.

Just my 2 currency units worth.

I'm going to see the Smashing Pumpkins tonight *and* I'm on the guest list (I know, I know - Kevin left the band because he listened to too much Smashing Pumpkins, how can you listen to that stuff and still like Dream Theater, don't you know anything about music, blah blah blah).

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

I guess the third time *isn't* a charm.

Hooray, I (well, DT) won over another convert!

I went to visit my neighborhood libations retail facility, and the bartender there noticed my HftH shirt. "Who's that on your shirt?" he inquired. I said it was Dream Theater, my favorite band. He shrugged and said he'd never heard of them. "Oh man, you gotta hear these guys!" I go on to tell him that they're like Heavy Kansas, Yes on Steroids, and that DT fans often like FW, Rush, Queensryche .... Anyway, I lent him a tape: A: PMU, TTT, Metropolis, UAGM, AFIL (live), Bombay Vindaloo B: Eroto/Voices, ACOS, TLF . with complete documentation, of course.

I went back about a week later; in fact it was right after the Satriani show in Philly, which he was at too, as it turns out. [Holy smokes, what a great show! And Mastermind was phenomenal!!] He said that when he played the tape, he was actually laughing out loud in delight! He then went on to tell everyone within earshot that DT was the best band he ever heard, they're the perfect combination of everything he likes in music, the singer reminds him of Geoff Tate, the drummer reminds him of Peart, the keyboardist(s) are at least as good as Wakeman, and the guitarist is right up there with Satriani and Vai. I think he didn't specifically mention the BASS because YOU CAN'T BLOODY HEAR IT, but that's imo. He also noted his distress in the fact that he had never heard of them.

Well, now he has! A new convert deserves a plug: Go visit Tim at Binni & Flynn's in Valley Forge! And ask for a Dogfight (Rumpleminze and Wild Spirit, chilled). We invented it!

Like Rob said, >Petruccianity will save the lost! Convert! Be baptized into the New >Order of music! All hail Petrucci! Bless us, oh Masterful Muse!

    Later All! Dave Neff (dneff@maaco.com)
