OK....Let's give Cleary a break. I think he's been initiated enough, already.
Can't we get back to making fun of Damon? :) BTW, Bigman should be here in
Chicago Tomorrow (Friday the 19th) so we can REALLY get work done on the
Midwest Con. Keep the faith!!!

Mike is a local San Diegan and a friend of mine. He's one of most
talented, unknown, and twisted guitarists I've ever been associated with.
He has a couple albums actually, the other being "Hat" (Mike is usually
seen wearing what looks like a green leprechaun hat)

Hey all,
Just finished reading thru hundreds of jamz and finally had time
to post.
Somebody asked who influenced Steve Perry. He was mainly influenced
by rythmn & blues guys, especially Sam Cooke. Of course, I be
pretty surprised if many jammerz have heard him.
By the way, I'm with Damon on liking Journey. In fact Raised
on Radio is one of my favorite albums (for the non-poppy tracks).
The combination of production, songs, and musicianship is great,
and IMO Perry and Schon were at their best on this album. Schon
is not the speediest guitar player, but he packs SO much emotion
into every note it's ridiculous.
All that being said, of course DT is my hands down favorite...
On another topic, some have talked about the quality of CD's degrading
as time goes on. I don't see how this could be, unless you play
frisbee with the thing. The information is digital, and nothing
touches the surface of the CD when it's playing ( as opposed to
a record or tape) so the quality shouldn't change. I also don't
see how a gold disk would produce better sound, again because
the information is digital, and the same regardless of the surface
it's stored on. But of course, the re-mastering of the material
for the gold disks should make the difference. But I'm no expert,
and who really cares anyway? Where's HairBall when we need him?
On with the Jam...
Paul

really interested playing this game if there is anything about DT in it!

I know this thread has been really over-worked in the last week, but I
thought I'd throw my own .02 in on it, hopefully for closure.
I'm not a musician - at least not in the rock and roll sense. I have
played French Horn for 12 years, though, and I at least understand
different levels of music, and how music is arranged and composed.
Whether or not one is a musician is irrelevant, however, in one's
taste in and appreciation for music in general.
The way I see it is this. Hearing is a form of perception, just as
are sight, smell, taste and touch. These are what we call the Five
Senses - bodily apparati which provide our brains with information
about the world outside our own skull (Objective Reality). What we
term as the 'I', or 'self' is contained somewhere in the brain,
permanently removed from Objective reality by these _Subjective_
apparati which collect empirical data about the world around us. I
say "Subjective", because all this data is colored and interpreted
subjectively by our mind/brain into a perspective on reality which is
unique to the observer. Okay, with that said, here's my point:
Everyone's taste in music is different, yet all tastes are of equal
Objective value. One cannot say that another is 'close-minded'
regarding DT simply because that other person doesn't care for DT's
style. That other person's taste (Subjective) may be completely
different than one's own. To claim that one's own taste in music is
'better' than anothers is to say that one's own taste has more value
Objectively. This can never be true, since everything one hears,
including music, is 'filtered' by one's mind and rendered entirely
Subjective. No one type of music is Objectively 'better' than another
- all music exists as sounds Objectively, which the composer arranges
into a pattern which is pleasing to himself/herself. The listener
hears the composition of sounds and sound patterns, and decides
(Subjectively) whether or not he/she 'likes' the music - and therefore
whether or not the music is 'good'.
So you see, it is asinine to flame someone else just because they like
a different style of music. DT can't appeal to everyone! The world
would be a very boring place if everyone perceived everything exactly
the same way, wouldn't it? If you like a particular style of music or
a particular band - listen to it! If you don't - don't listen to it!
But don't flame someone else for a difference in taste.
I guess that was more than .02 - but hey! Who's counting?
Until next time, let Petruccianity rise! Rise! RISE!
-Rob

Total agreement - Awake is my favorite album of all time (well, maybe
not future time) and it gets better every time I spin it. Give I&W a
good listen again, though - it has the same magical qualities. And I'm
starting to think the same about Shadow Gallery's "Carved in Stone"
disc, though they are a couple notches below DT (IMHO). But what a
keyboardist! (listen to song 20) And Brendt Allman is a happenin'
guitarist, too!
BTW, I gotta ask the rest of you - Brendt Allman - any relation to -
you know who - is it possible?
Gotta go-

About the Unabomber.....
Neil, you shoulda been on IRC a couple weeks ago
Difference between Una and OJ: OJ was/is a sports HERO, while Una/Ted was
long considered to be a nutcase......until he got his manifesto published
in the New York Times and Washington Post last year, I would bet that
most people would not have recognized the name "Unabomber", while OJ
might get 60+% recognition
AS for his message, it does apply to us, but in a negative manner, and as
such, we would rather dismiss the guy as wacko.......
Funny thing: as i read Mr. Gallop's post, the song In Dark Places by Crimson
Glory came over my headphones....a perfect background music to what Neil
had to say.....
Crimson GLory's "Transcendence" is a really cool album, if you can get past
the song Red Sharks....I was sorta surprised to see it mentioned (Way to
go Doug!)

Please read this. I am searching for a transcription of the old
Jaco favorite "Continuum". Next, does anyone else think that the section of
"The Mirror" from 2:14 to 2:19 makes the whole song? That particular part
is repeated several times, and I can't listen to the song without hearing
that section at least twice each time they play it.
