"Trinity" is a compilation of old single b-sides and EP's... You'll find the vocals a bit different, but the music is basically the same. A bit less violin on the oldest though! :) "Angel And The Dark River" is a truly great album! Not for the Take That fan, maybe, but still... They're DARN good live, too! I saw them on the Iron Maiden tour... In a small venue (1,200) and they were amazing! Too bad, the rest of the crowd didn't think so... :)

someone was asking about how "Trinity" compares to "The Angel and the Dark River". well, that's sort of a hard question. "Trinity" is a compilation of their 3 EP's: "Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium", "The Thrash Of Naked Limbs", and "I Am The Bloody Earth" (although there is on track from this last EP missing from the compilation), plus the B-side "The Sexuality Of Bereavement" (on the US version). I'll approach these one EP at a time...

"Symphonaire...": if you're expecting something like "Dark River" here, you're not going to get it. This was their first major release, and is definitely death metal. the last two tracks are very death metal, almost stereotypical, but there's still their unique style. the first track is death metal, but it also makes great use of the violin as well.

"The Thrash of Naked Limbs": ok, this one is really really cool. The music for the title track is beautiful, although still death metal, augmented by some gorgeous violin. it is also lyrically wonderful (as all Bride songs are, though this opne strikes me in particular). the second track is an interesting exploration of different sounds. no guitars, just different synth tones. very cool. the third track is similar to the title track. all in all, this EP sort of is the next step toward the sound you hear in their "Turn Loose The Swans" LP. it definitely is getting closer to the "Angel" sound, but it still has nothing but death metal vocals.

"I Am The Bloody Earth": the title track was recorded at the same time as the "Turn Loose the Swans" LP, and consequently has a similar sound, but still retains the death vocals. the second track is a remixed version of "THe Crown Of Sympathy" (from "...Swans"), and is the only track with any normally sung vocals. This is the closest track in terms of sound and tone to "Angel", but the guitar tones on "angel" are different from all their other work (a little more trebly, i think), so it's not exactly the same style.

"The Sexuality Of Bereavement:" a B-side from the "Swans" sessions. death vocals all the way through, some beautiful violin.

All in all, it's definitely a different focus, but still great music. I would also highly recommend "Turn Loose the Swans" if you can find it. that LP has some of the most beautiful music i have ever heard on it. in any event, i would recom, mend "trinity", definitely, but if you don't like death metal, you may not like it as much as "angel", although it has many of the same elements, just with a different focus. sorry this was so long. i hope this helps. if you have any other questions about it, drop me a line.

    Hey everyone,

Remember that spamming the jam got from some guy on AOL? I wrote to AOL regarding the problem and sent them the screen name of the individual. Below is the response I got. I also recently got spammed (personally) from someone on MSN and wrote the postmaster@msn.com and received a reply that they have taken appropriate action. So the next time we get spammed, try writing the postmaster. At the very least, the loser may lose his account.

    Hello.

I'm a Hungarian fan of Dream Theater and especially of Mike Portnoy. Me and some of my friends are big fans too, and we like your style of playing your instruments. I would have a question to Mike: Do you relly feel your playing (I mean globally) in some parts of your songs, e.g. Under A Glass Moon (during the guitar solo, especially at the beginning), or you just memorize each movement of your arms and legs? The parts like this seem very extreme to me because I have a little experience in playing drums. Otherwise, I can't imagine playing these things just by memory. Judging by your drum themes (like in Metropolis, at the end of the big solos - it's really great! -), your IQ must be rather high, far above the average.

    best wishes, Szilard

I have been on the Ytsejam for a few months now and I keep noticing people making mistakes when talking about Dream Theater related stuff. For example: WDATU-What the hell is this? Last time I checked the name of the CD is "When Dream and Day Unite". I don't see a T in the title of that disc. And my personal favorite: Dream Theatre-Come on people it seems if you were dedicated fans you would be courteous enough to at least spell the bands name correctly.

There's been a lot of talk about keyboards recently so here's my little story.. I was jammin' with two of my buddies. I play drums & the other two play bass and guitar. When we (try our best to) play Erotomania the guitarist usually plays the keyboard intro, but one day I sat with the Awake tab book and worked out the part on my keyboard - A shitty 10 year-old Yamaha PSS-210 (or something like that) I was so stoked, I didn't care what it sounded like!

So anyway, I took it along to the next jam and played it through a little 10watt practice amp turned up full so loads of distortion! It was cool as fuck. We got the bassists brother to play the drums and it was a great laugh! Of course, I didn't even attempt to play the solos! ;-)

The moral of the story: You don't need a $500 keyboard to have a good time!

i don't think that signing with a major label necessarily makes you a sell-out. it depends on what you did to your music to get signed, and what you do while you're signed. Echolyn's music was far from commercial, and way to busy for the typical music listener that's used to straight forward pop music. this isn't to say that everyone that listens to pop is an idiot, but there's different levels of listening ability, and Echolyn is up there. i think they did a hell of a job maintaining their musical integrity, especially after hearing both 'as the world' and 'suffocating the bloom'. it's a shame that sony dropped them, but at least they were able to record ATW. it's one hell of a killer album.

    Hi Jammerz,

A Question: Does anyone know if there are MIDI files of DT songs to be found on the net? I collect midi-songs and some DT material would be the crown to my collection.

To James Wiseman: Well you have a PSR-310 which is twice as much as a PSR-150 so your machine must be twice as good as mine. Just kidding actually, but the PSR-150 REALLY sucks. Whaddya mean with silly sounds tho, the keys are not stroke-sensitive and the samples sound really standard.

    Hello Jammers,

    A couple of things...

Charlie Dominici ---------------- The only CD I know of that he is on is WD&DU. I think he recorded with a couple of other bands after DT but they definitely didn't amount to anything.

Echolyn "sell-out"?, other things --------------------------------- I know that in "Suite for the Everyman" they make a comment about "selling-out" and eventually they signed with Sony Records based upon the quality of "Suffocating the Bloom." I think that the problem was that the band got to make the record that they wanted (as the world) and therefore Sony didn't like it, didn't see much radio playability (though "Best Regards" did get released as a single and didn't get much play anywhere), so ultimately that lead to Paul leaving the band. Chris then got frustrated with the direction that the record label was pushing the band, Ray, Brett, and Paul hung in, Chris got out. Without Chris, echolyn hung it up. Right now two splinter bands have formed:

Finneus Wake (Chris' (keys, backing vocals) band)

Finneus is going to be the mastermind group formed by Chris, they already have three songs written and are looking for a lead vocalist. Chris says that he won't compromise his artistic integrity and the band will be very progressive, with classical, jazz and other influences thrown in.

    Still (Ray (bass,vocal), Brett(guitar,vocal), Paul(drums))

Still is going to be a power trio, Ray will be going back to playing bass and the vocal will be shared by Ray and Brett. They have started practicing for a tour, and writing new songs. Ray says they will likely be more alternative/commercial than echolyn but not so much as the rest of the world.

    Later,

    Mike
