I have to jump into this....

This is a point I've been fighting with myself for years....

Im sorry, Dig, but I have to agree with Pat on this....he may
have gone about it the first time with an offensive overtone...but he's
    got a good point....

It's true...99% of the Alternative music out there is crap...
Im srtugling with whether or not thats actually opinion!!!
I was listening to Bush the other day, and 3/4 of the guitars
were out of tune....I don't think a guitarist would knock his guitar a
few semitones out of tune to sound good.....It's like breaking the
windows and denting all the body panels in your car, and calling your
car good looking!!!! SO I HAVE to conclude that he doesnt have much
knowledge of how to tune his instrument...I don't know if I could
respect someone that calls himself a musician, when he doesnt respect my
ears!!! (NOW I KNOW some schmuck is going to try to and discredit what
I just said by bringing up Hendrix.....Fuck that...Hendrix was allowed
to that....If the guitarist makes as much a statement as hendrix did,
I'll let him invade my radio space)

The disgraceful thing is that the more Alternative grows, the
less room groups like Dream Theater have to grow in this toilet we call
    the American Music Market.

Most definitely!!! As I had my stereo stolen a year ago I know what it was like
Thankfully the kid didn't like my taste in music and left all my CDs :)
Full coverage paid off as they gave me enough money for a better stereo and
a little extra for spending money ;) Now I have learned and bought a good
Viper alarm (no affiliations). My parent's home owner insurance will cover
my 101 CDs and radar detector and the car coverage will cover speakers, radio,
    amp, etc. :)
If I ever found any one with a stolen radio, there *ss would be mine.
Check to see if you are covered for all that, and see if you alarm co. covers
theft of property. Viper will pay you 5000 if your car is stolen.
It sucks what you have to go through now and I am sorry. Take care.

    Hey DT nuts,

It's been a while since I posted, but now I have to wonder. As the
Ytse-Rookie that you guys know me to be, should I go out and get WDADU? You
guys are scaring me about Charlie's voice. (At least his name is cool) Is
there anybody out there who he sounds like, b/c I can tolerate the likes of
Phil Anselmo (Pantera) to BArney Greenway (Napalm Death). I would get WDATU
but I don't know enough about Mr. Bahr to do so. I'd appreciate any info.

    Thanks in advance

    P = (V^2)/R

Power (Watts) = (Voltage squared) divided by Resistance (Ohms)

I knew it would come in useful sometime :-)

I am not sure about the US but in Australia it has a lot to do with
promotion. I have never seen nor heard prog bands like DT, Fates etc
in any form of media. No promotional work has been done hear, word
of mouth being the only method with which to widen the audience. The
fact that Prog bands never tour or do promorional tours here is also
a problem. Also they don't release singles and hence get bugger all
air play, except QR's single lucidity which went to No. 1 a few years
back ( there least prog song IMHO ).
Alternative bands get plugged to all shit down here, they do heaps of
tours and promo work they get butt-loads of air play etc.
I am no guru on who does what promo work but isn't the record company
in control of most of that. If DT were to tour down here and not
make wild amounts of ticket sales on jigs, the promo people most be
partly to blame for not trying to expose the public to the band.

Hey, it's not just you. That song ROCKS! I think the part that always gets

Hey, since we're on the topic of WDADU, does anyone like Light Fuse and Get

Point of this? : Let's all try and behave ourselves a bit here... I'm
sure that most of us respect each other's opinions and if we just try to
keep that point of view we can all gain so much more from this forum then
if we start attacking people cause they say something that might catch
    you on an off day.

You have to admit Dr. X, this isn't even _close_ to the types of arguments on
RMAQ! (rec.music.artists.queensryche) I'm actually able to handle this
little dispute. But, to add my 1470 pesos (that's the value of $0.02 these
days, right?), I have to say that there is a difference between talent and
    popularity...Here's my analogy.

    Imagine this...high school.

Imagine that all the intellectually-based bands (talented, in the hearts of
people involved deeply in music) are the school "nerds". So, Dream Theater,
Rush, Queensryche, etc., are like Albert Einstein, Siegmund Freud, Zac
    Newton, etc.

Imagine that all the popular, alternative bands (considered to lack talent by
some music fanatics) are the kids with all the popularity. No matter what
these guys do, they always have the crowd following them. They think they're
    really "cool".

Now, is it me, or is it always the popular, "cool" people who get all of the
respect by the majority of the school? The "nerds" working their butts off
in the classroom don't get any respect, except from their teachers...the ones
who are interested in their intelligence.

Let's face it; not everyone in this world is capable of handling complicated,
intricate music like the sort DT, Rush, QR, etc. puts out. Their minds can't
handle it. They just aren't musically intelligent enough to understand it.
You have to just accept that the "nerds" don't get the respect they truly
    deserve.

    What's up Jammers,

I havn't posted in a pretty long time,(Mostly because I get so many jams a
day that I'm still reading ones from a month ago!) so I thought that I
would post just for the fuck of it! I hope nothing really interesting has
been going on the jam lately because I'm so far behind -- I'd be missing it
    =(

Just thought I'd tell everyone that my life long dream of buying the JPM100
finally came true a few weeks ago! I got it for a good price too =) It
really kicks ass but I'm still getting used to the extra jumbo size frets!!
They make bending soooo much easier!

Another reason why I just decided to post today was because these two kids
in school said something about DT today that go me so mad -- I almost
killed them! Me and a friend have been going around the school with a
diskman, trying to get people who we think would be in to DT, to listen to
them and just give them a chance. I sat with two of my friends today and
told them to listen. One kid who is the most stubborn person on the face
of the planet then said to me "Get that crap away from me. I don't want to
listen to your MAINSTREEM MUSIC crap!"
Then the other kid replied "Shut up -- DT isn't Mainstreem, they're GLAM
ROCK -- like Kiss!" I got so pissed off from these statements that I
really felt like I was going to hit them! It just pisses me off that
people could be so judgemental about something that they no shit about! I
took a deep breath and just walked away.

Well, just thought I'd share that with you guys -- See ya around!

    Later,
    Robb

Actually, yes, I've had something up my ass for the past year called grad
school. But that's another story. However, I didn't misunderstand PD's
post at all. I agree that it's a shame that our fave bands (except Rush
and maybe one or two others) can't get the big money (pun intended) and
the big shows. Actually, I never addressed that point at all, one way or
the other. I posted in hopes of squelching (yet again) the idea that "we
rock and they suck." I guess it didn't work.

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. :)

Couldn't have said it any better, Rich.

I'm not at all with Pat. He wrote:

I'm not. Bands that are being recognized have some talent. All of them. ^^^^

Face it, music changes. What was metal in the 70s and 80s is not that representative as metal nowadays. Styles evolve (you can whine all you want) but that's the way things are. Look at other parts of cultural evolution. Classical music sure changed during the years.

Alternative (or whatever) offers something, maybe different. I think Oasis are great because the write good songs and they're fun. Doesn't matter they borrowed some chords from the Beatles. I like Garbage, Radiohead and Soundgarden since they write good songs, and lest not forget Weezer. (Who has got that Rivers Cuomo- speed metal demo BTW? I want it) It's just a different type of music and it's not fair to put it down by generalisations. Heck, I could state that prog-metal sux since a lot of prog-metal-bands do really suck. Have nothing to do with how fast you play your guitar or how high you can whine or yell. If the songs are crap so are you.

No, not that many alternative bands. Most such bands play clubs. And please don't lump DT together with present-day Kansas, Boston and Styx. They don't communicate anymore, therefore they're not selling out big arenas. Present-day Kansas or Scorpions or Yes or ... are sad stories if you REALLY listen to the music and not just "whoa I'm a fan, this is great". It's mostly a nostalgia-thing and everybody knows it.

Also, few bands can put on a show and fill an arena. And I don't mean fill it with people, fill it with... uhh their presence or something. Damn, this sounded much better in swedish. Even if Styx (or the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion for that matter) sold an arena out they wouldn't fill it like, say... Metallica or AC/DC.

    Flame on...
