Could somebody please clear up the nebulosity about dates, locations and
times for the YTSECON. I've been trying to keep track, yet it seems that
one of the above keeps getting changed. Thank you very much in advance!

Most alternative bands are not selling out arenas. They get big so fast,
without actually building a following over the years, thet they don't get
the same kind of live support. There are always exceptions to the rule,
but you will never see the type of concerts like we had in the late 80s.
A band could bust their collective asses and in a few years, and a few
albums (vinyl mostly, cd's starting to come around) they could headline a
major venue. Now, bands are here and gone so fast, that those kind of
shows just don't happen anymore. Like who you ask... hmm.. anyone
remember a band called Screaming Trees ?? They were one of the big
Seattle push.. where are they now.. sure they released a new album
recently.. but.. who cares.. now that "the crowd" has moved onto Green
Day and Alannis. The average music listeners attention span is less the
the OJ Simpson juries deliberations..
Just my 2 cents.. actually 1.4 cents after taxes.

Definitely go for it. I, too, was scared of CD's voice after hearing
about it on the jam, but actually that's a good thing because I was
expecting the worst, so I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't
all that bad (I've heard worse).
The real reason you should get this CD is that it is by far the most
progressive of DT's albums. Furthermore, with each successive album
after WDADU they've gotten heavier, which isn't a bad thing, but you
probably won't hear the kind of music that's on this disk much more
from them in the future.
I personally love it because Kevin is so predominant in all of the
songs. I never thought much of Kev's departure until I started
really getting into WDADU, and realized how incredible he really
is. This probably sounds corny, but I can tell just by listening
to the music that he was much happier during this time than he
was during the Awake time-frame. 'Only a Matter of Time' still
remains my all-time favorite Dream Theater song, and I don't think
it's a coincidence that Kev wrote the lyrics, and practically solos
all the way through it.
You'll definitely be missing out if you pass up this CD.

Hey Jammers, Just writing to let you know that one of the bands I have posted about, Atlantis, has a web site now. The URL is http://loki.stockton.edu/~stk3934/Atlantis/atlan1.htm. It's still under construction but has a really cool bio of the band. I know that they submitted a demo to the DREG comp thing so why not find some stuff about them. They are a really great prog metal band from south jersey. If you visit the site please e-mail me with your comments since I maintain the site. Thanx, Ryan Inverso KDR66

Barfbag was indeed played after TLF, but that's not the one you're thinking of. This one is just an extended ending of TLF, Barfbag is a whole different thing and never appeared on LIT.

good. now i have your attention. (never mind the fact that this is the 3rd time i've tried to post this goddamn thing, and each time i get cut off. bastards)
anyway...
echolyn: i know the new album's gonna be on some obscure prog label. from what _I_ knew, after the band broke up SONY just said "um, you don't need to record for us anymore". it wasn't as if they were making SONY oodles and oodles of money. the best revenge we can have on SONY is to make "when the sweet turns sour" a hit.
the altnertaive crap_ola: i've watched the D-Man and many others go on this thread, and it's time for me to state what i think. don't like it? deal with it.
I work at an "alternative radio station." (it's 103.9 WDRE for those of you near Philadelphia). They play, well, alternative music, where most of it i hate. I agree that Dream Theater (in _ALL_ aspects) are probably better than just about every new band out there? why? they're DIFFERENT!@ the last thing i wanna hear is another nirvana or pearl jam wanna be. what's funny is that the one song that broke alternative music to "the mainstreem" is the stupidest song ever made (even stupider than "ironic"):
"with the lights out, it's less dangerous. here we are now, entertain us. i feel stupid and contagious. here we are now, entertain us."
i'd put ray weston, brett kull, john petrucci and mike patton up against cobain any day.
speaking of patton (and fnm), have you noticed that they get _NO_ airplay? "WOW!@ EPIC!@" and that's it. OF course, "Angel Dust" is, imo, the best thing they've ever done. I'm a huge patton fan, btw.
getting back to dt. i was looking back at some previous jams that i had saved (if you remember "it's ytse and the jam", you rule), and...bafu's really funny.
well, i should go now. i'm really tired. byebye.

You know, about ytsecon III? The music director of my radio station, who is a DT fan himself but not on the Jam, said if we wanted, we could hold ytsecon III at the station. Great opportunity for us all, and nobody would have to drive me anywhere. What do you think? Seriously, we do have an entire studnet center that I am sure I could get a room in if we don't have a place already. Any opinions?

>And someone said "Awake" isn't a "cohesive" album. Bullshit. >
This reminded me of something I was thinking. Am I the only one who thinks that CiaW and LSoaD should trade places on "Awake"? Then it'd make the first half the 'happy, upbeat' half, and the second half would be the 'dark, heavy' half. And AMBI would be the 'transition'. Then the CD sorta follows a story. A guy just started out on his own and realizes how he has to live his life (6:00), finds a special girl (LSoaD), matures (IF) then the relationship gets really fucked up and he starts to have doubts (AMBI), and then their relationship just gets filled w/ deception and betrayal (Mirror/Lie/CiaW/Scarred) and finally they break up, and the guy never wants to see her again (SDV)... waddaya think?

It took a few listens for Charlie's voice to grow on me, but now I like WDADU just as much as I&W and Awake. Besides, where else are you going to hear the song that lent its name to this mailing list? InstruMental? (Which, BTW is well worth getting)
And as far as WDATU is concerned, I believe our good buddy Mike Bahr as sold well over 2000 CDs to likes of us Jammers. (500 Subcon, 500 AD, 1000 Cygnus, over 500 WDATU have shipped, AQ is selling fast, SFaM is open to ordering, CM is open to ordering) And as far as I know, every single one sold has gone to a satisfied customer. Well, maybe not, but *I've* never heard any complaints here on the 'Jam about Mike, his business practices, or his products.
Hey Mike, this brings up a good question, how many CDs *have* you shipped?
I don't know if you were around then, but a little while back someone asked Mike why his prices were so high. About half a dozen people jumped to his defense before he could respond himself. In short, you can trust Mike. He's not going to screw you.
And while I'm at it, other trustworthy people I've dealt with through the 'Jam: Dr. Mosh, Tim Lodge, Jason Skewes/Bernd Basmer.
People to avoid (that I can remember right now): Al Balkewiez, and someone who goes by different names that lives in Connecticut.
This is getting longer than I thought. Guess I'll shut up now.

Just a couple of thoughts about the whole 'atlternative' thing. IMHO, the main reason many alternative bands are selling out arenas is because that's what record companies and eMpTyV are promoting. Not only are they promoting the music, but the style of life as well... that's why it's so popular. Rememnber the 80's? If you think about it half the bands were really good, and the rest were just cheap, cheesy imitations... because a couple of bands struck it big, then record companies went around looking for other bands w/ the same style.
That's what's happening right now. IMO there are many good alternative bands( Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, ) heck I even liked Nirvana when it first came out... I just got bored of it pretty quickly. And record companies (and MTV) don't promote DT and Rush bands because that's not what the people want.
Eventually, some prog-rock band will have a big hit (like Tom Sawyer or Owner of LH) and it'll most probably be DT, because they're the most popular prog-rock band out there, and the music scene will change... In fact it's changing as we speak...right now there's more talent on the radio (DMB, Blues Traveler) and even Hootie ( I don't really care for'em, but at least they're pleasing to the ear) ... and I've been hearing a lot more about metal/prog bands now a days... the times they are a changin'., yes sir :)
just a thought.

The spelling. ;-) No..when you think about it, writing means just putting something on paper. Composing means actually coming up with a tune and melody and stuff. The way that most people use the words, they mean the same thing...when you think about it, that was kind of a stupid thing to say on the Rush guy's part. Getting a lil' too technical. Don't cuss or I'll tell my mommy on you. Dumbfuck. :-) :-)
>So my advice to everyone is, think before you post.
I have found that it is safer for me, and the rest of the world, if I leave the thinking to other people.

Shut up, Skadz. :-)

Dammit Graham...the picture of James' and Billy Joe's third arms was bad enough.

I love the AFIL cadence. I now have to pause whatever I may be doing to drum to that cadence when that part in the song arrives. I made it my mission to memorize it. I'd like to see MP mirror it on the kicks though, instead of doing just 16th notes all the way through. That would be purty neat.

Thank you...but, I prefer to be reffered to as a "dork".

Just ignore them. If they're that dumb, just shoot them....er, leave them alone. Sorry...lil' slip there. :-)

Damn....that's gotta hurt more than the time I shit a brick.
Toodles.
