Subject: Alterna-crap Bands, My Opinion
Message-ID: <199604241614.MAA18304@grex.cyberspace.org>
Hey,
Here's my opinion of the Alterna-crap that's popular now. Most of
it I can't stand, but there are a few people/groups that have popped up
out of the Alterna-crowd that are actually good. For example:
I really dig Stone Temple Pilots. I think they have very well honed
songwriting skills, and I love the way their albums refuse to sound the
same.
Now, back in the day, when Nirvana was the big thing, I had to
admire Kurt Cobain's songwriting ability, he could really write a catchy
tune. Nothing that I ever wanted to buy, but when I would hear it at a
party, or on the radio, it didn't piss me off.
However, I don't like they way both of these bands, and many
others out there, live and publish their lives outside of their music.
Don't sell albums by being a cool heroine addict then blowing your head
off and leaving your daughter in the care of Courtney Love!
Courtney Love. That a whole other essay right there!
Anyway, In this time of musicians who are writing depressing
songs because they don't "want" the fame, i.e. Eddie Vedder, We should be
greatful that we have a group like DT, who lift us from the everyday
sludge that we are exposed to.
So, in defence of today's popular music, I am hearing a lot of
great songwriting, i.e. STP, Oasis, Better Than Ezra, etc., and a
shitload of crap, i.e. Presidents of the United States of America, Ween,
Weezer, etc., none of which I really want to own.
Anyway, the above may be my only post for a while, I'm typed out.

Dear guys,
Hey there! How's everyone doing near the end of the spring semester? Anyways, I was just wondering if you guys want to have an informal gathering sometime over the summer? I know that in October a lot of you guys won't be able to go due to classes and such, so it'd be cool if we got together and just had a big Ytsejam hang out over the summer! Let me know if you guys want to do this, okay? TTYL!
Yours, Jeff =)

You're right, I didn't explain it very well. I guess Innocence Faded is where the relationship matures from puppy love to a really serious realtionship... and the guy is also like already deep into life and maturing as a person in general...

Oh, I don't really give ashit about Hootie... I'ts just that I've always liked to strum away on an acoustics and sing songs w/ my buds while having a couple o' beers... although I don't actually knoiw any of their songs (not even the names) , but I guess that part of me still relates to that music... and I still hold to my statement that they're one of the more talented bands at the top of the charts; I know it's a sad and pathetic statement, but IMO it's true... Although they're still below bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, etc..
But still... I don't like Hootie so you can chill :)

Midwest Convention update........
Bigman (Andrew Martin) finally dragged his sorry, freshman-in-college ass down to Chicago last weekend. I swear to God he brought his whole DT collection of stuff with him. I didn't know if he was just wearing the stuff or if it was for sale. And with your height, Bigman, you'd better be able to dunk!
Anyway, I took the minor to a local tavern for his first Sam Adams and to discuss thoughts on the MidCon. "It's all good," he said over and over and over and over.
Chicago will be the initial locale. The only thing that will change this is if we can't find a reasonably priced room downtown. We'd then move to Milwaukee. I am looking into hotel meeting rooms in both cities and hotel room prices for people to crash. PLEASE e-mail me ASAP if you haven't expressed interest already! This will help negotiate block rates and what kind of room we'll need.
I also have friends who own a bar in Lincoln Park who agreed to rent out half of the place to us (a block away from where the boys played when last in Chicago -- 11/94). We'd be able to fit up to 60 people plus over-21s could roam to the other half. The bar guys and I know the beat cop in the area and he had no problems with the whole "minor" thing, either. Hey...it's Chicaaaaago. My guess is that there wouldn't be too many under-18 people in the first place.
Dates....since ConIII is in October, we figure to hold the MidCon in early August.....like the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd (Firday-Saturday). Please lemme kno how that sounds. I know it's summer, but I don't know if college jammers are heading to homes not in the Midwest.
Sinista has another management number via Jeff Chew (who has generously offere d to help on band contact). We hope that the boys' part will be completed by then and that any of them would be able to make the trip out to Chicago. Also, Bigman is making headway on shirts. After eltting me know if you're interested, dial him up and put in a shirt order! (He and I will compare lists to make sure everyone's on).
I think that's it, for now. Slowly but surely we're putting this bad boy together. Sinista----sorry I didn't call ya back, but I've been extremely busy. I hope this post answers many of your questions.
Looking forward to welcoming you to Chicago!
Steve

Hiya John, I've been using the Peavy XRD 680 for about 2 years now and I love the sucker. It cost about $750 but it's well worth the x-tra dough. It has 800 Watts (we run 4 15's, 4 10'2, and 4 horns with ease). The digital effects are excellent. It has mostly reverb and chorus type effects to enhance drums and vocals (it's amazing how much a little reverb can spruce up a shitty sounding drum kit or a flat singer)The effects can also do some pretty strange stuff like gated reverb and about a second of delay. The EQ section is pretty good for a graphic section, and each channell (8) has a pretty good sound shaping knobs n stuff. Check it out! Peavy has really increased the quality of their stuff lately, especially for bass. The Peavy 4X10 sounds almost as good as my Eden 4x10 and at about half the price (peavy bass heads still kinda blow though). Hope this helps.
Cheers!

The last sentence is rather close minded don't ya think? What if you found someone who said they absolutely LOVE Hootie and the Trendfish (I mean Blowfish), but they also said that they like Dream Theater? Would you still write off ANY musical knowledge they claim to have? A lot of the ytsejammers (me included) always say how close minded the "alternative people" are. Yet we say that Green Day, Hootie, Pearl Jam, etc. SUCK. I think we can be just as close minded as the "alternative people" sometimes. Sure, we may think that DT and other related bands are *better* than the popular bands of today, but to ignore the musical knowledge of others because they like Hootie IS close minded.

On this subject, If you said to someone "I like Dream Theater" (for whatever reason) and they said something like "Dream Theater? never heard of them, what are they like?" How would you reply? It's a common problem I have here as no-one has heard of them. Maybe occasionally I'll get "Oh right they're Heavy Metal" and I'll say "Errr, no not really, maybe In a sense but not in the way you're thinking, errrrrr." How would you explain other than "Like nothing else on this planet."
Also, how well "known" are Dream Theater in the States? I have a friend In San Diego who says he's never heard of them, and lets just say he's certainly not musically ignorant.
Cheers

At least from my point of view isn't there a better chance that _more_ people will be around during school time. I know most people lose e-mail contact over the summer and what not. Or maybe I am just selfish because I won't even be back in America until August 26th (I will be in Germany). Of course the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few *shrug*.
But dammit I still want a shirt even though I can't be there! *grin*
