    Greetings Jammers,

Been a little talk about When Dream and Day Unite lately. Anyone
that doesn't have this album: GO BUY IT TODAY! :)

I pulled that little gem out of my CD collection today and popped
it in the changer... wow... I had forgotten just how much some of those
songs rock. Ytsejam is simply brilliant, and there are several other
great tunes on there that sometimes get overlooked in the scope of some
    of the other DT songs.

I would argue though, that for all intents and purposes, WDaDU
doesn't really sound like Dream Theater. There is a *huge* progression
between WDaDU and I&W, but in my opinion When Dream and Day Unite just
kicks so much butt too if you don't try to compare it straight to I&W or
    Awake.

    >>>>Well, guess what. May 7th is the release date for Pantera's new
album. I'm stoked about this for a number of reasons. First, they
have been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Second, the title
is The Great Southern Trendkillers. This is the greatest name for my
attitude right now. I figure if we take all the Bush shirts and change
the B's to R's and make them say Rush then at least all these "I love
alternative, I hate my life," hipsters would at least look cool. In
Dimebag's article/interview in the latest Guitar World ends with Dime
saying something like "Don't be a follower, Trendlill broes." Words of
wisdom from a highly respected man.<<<<

oh yeah, i heard a new track last night, WOW!!!!!! IT KICKS SOME ASS!
they even go into some weird time signatures, i couldnt belive it, this
stuff is grade A pantera, youre really gonna like this album.

    > Even though I'll be gone, I will live on.

excellent choice of words, if i must say myself... (eh irc dudes? :)

Bigs said Pipe, by Hoey is a good love scene song, haha! dude, thats
more like for pornography!!! its sleezy as hell when you hear it in
that way, its a very cool song though. the deep would be good too.

    >> Whats gets me is that at the end of the show, James
blamed the owner of the club for having to close at 1:30. Seems to me if
the damns show started on time, there would have been no problems. <<

    >> Does anyone out there know what really happened that night? I would
really like to know. Thanx <<

I am from CT and was at both the shows at the El n Gee. I don't know why the
show started so late, but I can tell you why the show had to end at 12:30(If I
remember correctly, I think that the show ended at 12:30, not 1:30). CT state
law requires that BARS are CLOSED at 1:00 on weeknights and 2:00 on Weekends.
This means that the bar must be EMPTY by 1:00, so typically last call is at
12:30 or so. DT was probably forced to end their set at 12:30. The show on the
following Saturday was MUCH Better, the sound sucked on the first night (Could
not hear keys, or the lead guitar solos, guitars was pure distortion), but was
infinitely better on the saturday show. Also, the saturday show was 2.5 hours,
where the Wednesday Show was 1.5 Hours.

I just programmed my Cd player to play the CD in the order I had talked about (you know having CiaW and LSoaD trade places) and it's so much better. First of all, Innocence Faded doesn't sound so out of place... and second, you get to hear Mirror,Lie, and CiaW all in a row... what more do you want... so next time you have 75min to spare, try it out..

2 questions that have crept up in my mind recently: 1) Is it bAfu or bafU? ^ ^

    2) Is it luh-sawd?

    Hey Kids!!!

I'd just like to comment on the production on WDADU. When I first got this album back in 1989 I thought that the sound quality was not so good. What caught my ear was the songs themselves. As far as first albums go this is the best, and I am not just saying this because DT is my favorite band. I love Rush, I.M., Fates Warning ect. ect., and WDADU blows away all of the above mentioned first albums. Light Fuse and Get Away is still probably ny favorite DT song. Any drummer on the jam will tell you that the drum beat in that tune is awesome, and complex. As for Charlie's voice, well at the time that was all we had. James is a much better singer, but I had never heard of him until almost 3 years later. I liked Centurion, who then became Majesty, but WDADU was what really put them over the top. Remember afterall the guys were only 21 years old when WDADU was recorded, what the hell did they know about production and record deals? I recorded a demo with the D-man and mojoman in the summer of 94 and they'll agree are playing was not one tenth of DT's and we were 2 years older then them at the time of recording. D-man, did you notice what Ben's favorite song of the week is? Rush influencing daily life again. It's a shame you were not around to see that song played on Saturday night, oh well maybe when you get home from sunny Vermont.

    Elen sila lumenn omentilmo, Gandalf

P.S. I have seen DT play as a headliner at small clubs and opening for Iron Maiden at the Ritz in NYC, the club shows were much longer and better, lets keep it that way. Nuff said

I'm considering going to Mid-con, but I'm not sure I'll have the necessary cash. Corey C., where's my cheque? :)

I saw, handled in my very fingers and did NOT buy the domestic re-release of WDADU (that's the studio version of a Mike Bahr CD :)). This was at a Best Buy and the in-store Muze database still didn't know about WDADU being available ("Availability: No Longer Made.") D'oh! Price was about $9, an excellent price.

Aside to Skadz: no, they didn't have the Japanese LatM, but they did have four (4) copies of the German LatM and two (2) copies of "TSM" single.

Thanks to Denis Schoen and the others at Theater of Dreams, I've had a chance to hear 2 of the new DT songs that will be on the new album... Raise the Knife and Carnival of Clams (working title). Also, I caught a new Petrucci piece which was probably just written for his guitar-teaching efforts called Lost Without You.

    The future looks bright.

None of the songs had lyrics yet, but boy am I psyched about it... the melody and lead riff/overture from Carnival is replaying in my head even still. It's about 8 minutes long. I can't wait to see what James sings in it and what they title it. I'm so psyched for the new album that I'll be chattering my teeth until autumn. It's a fast, sprawling song with some fantastic songs that in a few ways reminds me both of Cemetery Gates and of Bombay Vindaloo. If you could cross the two in your head and then add a catchy riff theme that never goes away, such as the one in, say, Matter of Time at the end, then you'd have a pretty good working approximation of the new DT material.

Raise the Knife was less enthralling but still a worthwhile listen in instrumental form... lyrics will really lift it up. It's changed so much from the instrumental played in June at Birch Hill and Malibu that we might as well call those two "Showdown" for good. Or not.

Lost Without You wanders a bit and is hard to stay with, like a lot of what's on Tori Amos' new Boys for Pele album. It features some nice licks and leads though. It'll never be on an album, I'd wager.

    Here's hopin'!

    Hello all,

About CD's voice - it's not really that awful. I first heard DT on a metal compilation cd set that played 'The Killing Hand'. I thought his voice added a suitable angst/pained feel to the overall atomsphere of the track, and it has always been a favourite of mine. And of course, Killing Hand was enough of a spark for me to become an ardent DT supporter.

I agree that the production on WDADU is medicore but its about the same as Rush's Moving Pictures and Signals.

Some guy was looking for Singaporean jammers (s7700020=C9singnet.com). Well, I'm half Singaporean living in England - does that count? :-)

I've finally moved house - after getting off my butt and changing jobs - to Brighton, large coastal town off Southern England. So, of course, to baptise the house with music and to reflect on whats happened in the last months, I could only choose ACOS.

    See you later.

Hello everyone, it's BABS! I was listening to 102.1 (The Edge) last night out of Toronto. This was at about 9:45 PM and I was doing my dishes when I heard a track from the Rush tribute album. They played Spirit of Radio. It was really excellent. The station did not mention the band who did it and I spent a good half hour afterwards trying to call the station to inquire more about it (to no avail - damn DJ's never answer the request lines). To my recollection there were no keyboards in the song, it was all done on guitar and it was really good. Does anyone know what band did this? One interesting point is that they mentioned that it would be available in the stores on May 8!

Just had to share my experience with you all!

Hello fellow jammers. Before I get started, let me say that for the first time in years, I can honestly say that I am glad I live in Ohio. Okay, that said, let's move on... For those of you that have never met JP, believe me when I say that he has a great sense of humor. Whatta guy. He made the comment, "This was one of the most BIZARRE clinic's I have ever done". I will get into the reason for his statement later. He came out at 8:15 pm with his guitar and played a slow, pretty song he said was entitled Lost Without You. It was a song that was written for those times when you are on the road touring and can't be with your spouse. The song had pre-recorded keyboard music that he played to accompany his guitar. Very nice. He went on to to talk about chromatic scale. Chromatic scale is a scale that uses half steps instead of the actual fret scale. {guitar players know more about this than I do. I don't play guitar, so don't flame me for my ignorance}. He mentioned Chopin and some of the etudes he wrote for piano that can be played on the guitar as exercise. He didn't mention any specific names, so I can't help you on that one. He began talking about his guitar next. He told us that it has 2 pick-ups. He uses the tone switch to use the front pickup (the one nearest the fretboard) for the heavy, muddy sound he likes. He moves the switch to the center position to use BOTH pick-ups so he can get a cleaner, mellower sound. He began playing the intro to PMU to demonstrate the cleaner sound he was speaking about. Then, getting back to talking about chromatic scale, he told us that the song Erotomania uses chromatic scale. He asked us if we knew what erotomania was, and the first answer was..."It's track 4 from DT on the Awake cd". That person did NOT get the t-shirt. I kicked myself for not remembering the answer that was sent into the 'jam all those months ago. After several wrong answers, JP told us that erotomania is a dillusional disorder in which a person elevates a public figure to GOD-like status (no flames please. I don't want to see another gillion jam's based on God. Thanks). JP mentioned that guy that shot John Lennon out of devotion for Jodi Foster, as an example. Understand now? I do. He started a pre-recorded tape with the music from Erotomania and began to play. It was just like the cd, only better. JP added a few different licks and tricks that only served to enhance an already GREAT song. Afterward, he told us that chromatic scale is a good exercise that can be utilized in the real world of guitar. 'nough said. Moving on... He asked us if we knew what the time signature for Erotomania was. One guy piped up immediatly and said, '5/4, 5/4, 5/4, 9/8'. JP was impressed. The guy also went on to say that he is a drummer thus, he had to count it out the play the song. JP threw him a t-shirt. Lucky guy. :-) JP said that there is an easy way to count out 9/8 time. When they are in the studio working on a song, they count it out as 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3, 1-2. It is a better way that keeps you in time. He did suggest that you don't count it out in German, then proceeded to do so just for the laugh. {Easy Deutschlanders... He said it, not me.} He asked for questions next. I asked, "Other than Raise The Knife, what other song titles can we expect to hear?" He kinda ducked the question saying, 'we have about 20 songs written. They should be chopped, whittled, scrapped or whatever so that the new release will be about 70 minutes of music. Hopefully we will save the good ones'. Someone asked how the band goes about writing such complex songs. He said that when they are in the studio, everyone just sorta bounces ideas off each other, then the song just sorta forms itself. They don't always go in with the idea that they will have constantly changing tempos and time signatures. That just happens when it feels good. When asked how things are going with Derek in the band, JP said that the general feel is ALOT more energetic. He pointed out that Kevin's desire to leave the band during the recording of Awake made for a less than happy environment. JP asked if anyone knew what the symbol was that the band uses. After a few wrong answers, someone stated that it is the 'M' for Mary, Queen of Scots. That person also got a t-shirt. JP told us that Dream Theater used to be called Majesty and that Charlie was looking through a book and saw the symbol, so they stole it... Someone asked where the name Dream Theater came from. JP said that after the problem with the name Majesty came up, they were looking for a name. Mike Portnoy's dad lives in California and suggested DT after the name of an actual place called Dream Theater near his home. JP said that he is writing music for a Sega Saturn pinball game. He asked if we wanted to hear it and was promtly swamped with a thunderous YES!!! He said, 'I have to find it. It is on this tape somewhere'. He played several songs, probably songs that will wind up on the up-coming album, but he wouldn't give us any names. I did hear Raise The Knife somewhere in there. It has a sound that reminded me of the song Scarred. Wait... It didn't sound like Scarred, it just had that Scarred feel to it. Moving on... I heard about 5 or 6 songs. One sounded done, but it didn't have the vocals on it. We can only imagine what that song will be. He finally got to the Sega music. It was INCEDIBLE!!! The guitar work was very heavy, it had that "animal" feel to it. Awesome stuff. Someone asked what the songs were that we heard. JP said that many of them were, as yet, untitled. He kiddingly suggested we write to the record company with out suggestions. Someone asked why he was wearing a wristband. He said it was to keep his wrist warm, that when you are doing the heavy picking that he sometimes does, the tendons that go from the wrist to the thumb can begin to hurt. It is NOT carpal-tunnel syndrome. CTS is on the underside of the wrist. The tendons he was talking about are on the side of the wrist. Okay, personal stuff.... Some of the people I saw there were fellow jammers: Ibanez (IRC name). He is Robert Barker. He drove 7 hours from Lancaster PA with his guitar and his dad. Buster (IRC name). He drove in with some friends from somewhere down south. G. Jack Thetgyi (sp?) He came to Akron from the Toledo Ohio area. I wore one of Trey Allen's Ytsejam sweatshirts to the clinic. I figured it would be the easiest way for other jammers to find me. I was right. Ibanez walked up and asked who I was, while I was standing next to Jack. I told him I am GHSrocker (IRC name). Jack looked at me and said, "Oh. You're the guy with the extra Ytsejam t-shirt." Sorry people, it isn't for sale. It was great talking with everyone. Jammers are great people. If anyone else was at the clinic that I missed, feel free to write your impession of the thing. I took notes, but got caught up in the whole thing and forgot to write some stuff down. Ok, on with the jam. If anyone has questions for me. Feel free to send them to ME and not the jam. I have used up enough space already. Sorry.... Talk to you all in the future, George. ********************************************************** If you see me driving sideways...wave. Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.
