I think that the Rush Tribute will be a smorgasborg of members from
different bands collaborating on one song.

Sorta like the Deep Purple tribute, and the second Jimi Hendrix tribute.
Does anyone else have these? I like them. I like the 2nd Hendrix tribute
a lot better than the first one.

May 8 is a Wednesday, so I suppose the tribute will be out the 7th?

Me too, but at the same time are their following albums too "contrived"
    just to be different????????????
    >
    > Now, back in the day, when Nirvana was the big thing, I had to
    >admire Kurt Cobain's songwriting ability,

Yes, I am a Nirvana fan. I feel that there was a lot more to Kurt Cobain's
writing abilitities that we will unfortunately never know. I put a lot of
blame on the record labels who are on everyone's ass to just release
something in order to keep the "masses" happy. You usually wind up w/
b-side material appearing on the next release.

Ok. Good point, but let's back up here. I don't believe the artist
themselves sit back and say "oh this is gonna look so cool". Let's look at
drug and alcohol addictions. First of all both are usually a disease of
"isolation" so to speak. These people have their own private hell to
endure from their addictions (and yes they do tear apart families and
destroy the people closest to them.) I put most of the blame on society
that overglamourizes these people. Perfect example: I bought a copy of
Rolling Stone last week because Oasis was on the cover. I have really
grown to like this band since. Now, hearing the lyrics to Champagne
Supernova one can pretty much deduce that it's in reference to drug use.
Ok, fine. I don't have a problem with an artist relaying personal
experiences of that nature. I get extremely mad when I go to read the
article about them and barely even touches on their musical influences, but
goes on and on about their drug and groupie habits. Something is extremely
wrong here! Look back through most of history and you will find that
artists have always had somewhat tortured personal/private lives. What I
can't get over is how our society just feeds off of it. Over and over
again - it's like we can't get enough. That's frightening.

    Ok, enough of my BABbling...

together would be cool, unfortunately, i have 5 exams and im stressed out
    beyond belief.

Hey Chris....have you been to pure pop lately? They seem to have Dream
theater boots more often than usual. I got mind control for 50 bucks. Its
a 2 disc set. They also had dream theater demos with no vocals for 25 i
think. They had 3 of those i believe. Where you the guy on Church street
with the black DT hat? I saw some guy with a cool black DT hat and asked
him where he got it. He said he has friends in MTV and they got it for
    him. Was that you?

What are people's opinions on Helloween. How do they compare to the likes
of DT, FW, Savatage, Shadow Gallery,...??? I had a copy of of Keeper Pt
II (the one witht the song Halloween), but that was way before I got into
DT and progessive metal. I keep wanting to buy a Helloween disc, but I am
not sure. I know they have 2 new ones out Time of the Oath and Master of
the Rings. One of them is 1994 but new to the US. The cd dated 1994 comes
with an extra disc od 7 new songs. I think MOR is the older one. Should I
buy either of the new ones or get an older one?

    ********
DT was what got me into Prog Metal. Before then I was into Hard Rock/Metal.
I purchased FW's Parallels well before Images and Words. I wasn't too
impressed by Parallels. I had bought the cd because of the song Eye to Eye.
Later on Images and Words came out and I bought it and saw DT in the same
week and was amazed. Then I gave Parallels another listen and loved it.
DT changed my taste in music. Prog Metal!

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! I just found out a bit of information that you fellow Long
Island jammers might want to know! Derek Sherinian is playing a gig with
Greg Smith and Al (forgot his name) at a local Long Island club! The gig
will be at the Peoples Bar and Grill, and there's no cover charge. It's
off Jericho Turnpike on Cuba Hill Rd., and the gig will be on May 10th
(Friday). He said that it'd be really cool to meet some ytsejammers
there, so if you can go to it, then it'd be really cool! I'm probably
gonna go, so hope to see some of you there!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)

I'd buy an older one. IMO, the two newest ones Time and MOR aren't
nearly as good as the earlier ones. I bought MOR as an import, so I
haven't heard any of the extra songs.

They got a new singer (Deris) and he just sounds worse than the other
guy (what's his name?), IMO. Try buying Chameleon. That album was
better than I thought it would be and it has some good tracks on it
    (1,4,5,10, plus a couple others).

Not to take up for the Presidents, but I don't think they really consider

    Hey guys,

There has been a lot of talk about why the El 'n Gee show started
so fucking late on Dec. 27. I got to the club at about 5 and saw the band
when they came in. This also means I was in line freezing my ass off for
four hours!! When the guys arrived, they looked upset already. Like they
had gotten lost or something. Derek was the only one who was really
    friendly when they arrived.
A big reason for the delay once they got there was that the El 'n
Gee had shit for sound reinforcement and they were running around trying to
find Mike Portnoy a working drum monitor. DT's road manager said this was
the reason for the delay. He and the club manager got in a huge argument
and DT's road manager said the band was freaking out because their fans had
been waiting so long. I also think it had a lot to do with the club
spending more time doing meet and greet stuff and didn't give a shit how
long we all waited. Yes, I'm very bitter. After the Home for the Holidays
shows I got pneumonia. Coincidence? Maybe.
The El 'n Gee management should be ashamed of their performance in
Dec. For a club like them to get a band like DT, they should at least do it
right. The second show there, the house lights crapped out. James was
    noticeably pissed at the club.
Finally, I think everyone who was at the first El 'n Gee show will
agree that the biggest insult was having to listen to "Pleasure Crush"
before DT finally came on. LAter guys!

I was fiddling around on the keyboard, and I think I've worked
out the start of learning to live. I think that the time signature is
in 6/8, but I've split it up into the way I think of it (i.e 3,3,4,5).
If you take middle C as being C(3), the octave above to be C(4) and the
octave below being C(2). So the first line means - F#(3),C#(4),C#(4),
    etc,etc.

            F# C# F# (3,4,4)
            E C# F# (3,4,4)
            B C# F# C# (3,4,4,4)
            A C# F# C# G# (3,4,4,4,3)

This continues for 30 secs (ish - not quite sure) and then it changes to
something I can't recognise at the moment (I think).
I do know that technically G sharp is A flat, but "G#" I think is clearer
    in ASCII than "Ab."
I also got a bit of the solo done, but not much, it goes something like
    this (all octave 4):

    F# G# A G#
    F# G# A B
    A G# A G# C#............

but I didn't get any further. Plus that bit might be wrong as it is off
    the top of my head

Try it out and let me know if you think it is correct.

    All the best

I'm not too sure that DT would sell out a bigger venue...
Last june when they played the Malibu club, you could still by tickets at
    the door.

Yeah, get the new ones, "Master of the Rings" and "Time of the Oath". They
are similar to the Keeper's style but with a new singer, who, IMO, is just
as good as Michael Kiske was, albeit a slightly different approach. The
newest is pretty fast and has some better songs than on MOtR, but they are
both real good. Check them out...

    Subject: A DREAM COME TRUE!
    Message-ID: <317FE65A.63B0@ee.net>

A dream came true for me last night. The 2 hour drive to Akron Ohio was more than worth
the chance to meet my idol in person! John Petrucci was one of the nicest people I've
ever met in my life. Since I've already seen a complete run down in here of the clinic,
I'll just mention a couple of my highlights:

    1. JP wrote music for a new SEGA Saturn pinball game, and it is fucking INCREDIBLE! It
was one of my favorite peices he played.

    2. There was such a diverse crowd, we all managed to talk him into playing demo tracks
from the new album!!!! The songs sounded killer, and one in pariticular was VERY heavy
with killer drums from hell! There was also a taste in there of a nice ballad with
acoustic guitar, different than silent man.

    3. My best friend from NY was scheduled to take a train out of NY and be here in the
morning, and I was "surprising" him with tickets...he had no idea. Well, he missed the
fucking train! DUH! I scrambled to find a way to get him out here, and ended up charging
a plane ticket and he flew into columbus (WHEW!) At the clinic, my friend (joe) answered
a question about chromatic scales correctly, and John threw him a T-shirt. Not only
that, but since Joe came the farthest to see him (From NY), he won a free JP 2 hour
    instructional video!! Fuckin guy.....

    4. JP himself was a great guy. He took time to answer a LOT of questions, and was very
    patient with us all!

    5. Finally, I got to meet JP up close, and tell him what an honor it was for me to be
there. I personally handed him the DT Doom2 level that I made, and he was actually
interested!! I described the level a little and he was like "wow, really?!!" He asked
"what type of game is it? adventure?" and I said its a shoot'em up. He then started to
describe the joystick he uses on his computer. I was sooo nervous I was shaking. I set
my Jewel Blue Ibanez RG570 on the counter, and my girlfriend took pictures as John
signed the front in silver paint pen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He gave us a couple autographed
photo's, and took a few minutes to chat with me. I was in heaven you guys!! All I can
say is that, besides being a great clinician and guitar player, John is a great person!

    See ya's!

    A very very happy buster@ee.net :)
