Yep . . . I posted this a while ago, but some of you might have missed it.
If anyone's interested in seeing a scan of Queen Mary's original logo, I
    have it at http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~borlangw/logo.html

Neil Elliot also included it in issue 9 of Images and Words.

The new ones sounds like shite to me, I'm sorry to say. I really want them
to be as good as "The Keeper..." albums or even "Chameleon", but they just
aren't! I think Helloween has lost much magic, due to the fact that Kai
left in '89 and Kiske was kicked out in '93... Roland is a fine replacement
for Kai, but that's it! He totally lacks the charisma. As for Andi
replacing Kiske... Well, it would be as if James LaBrie would be replaced
by, say, Billy Corgan! It has changed Helloween from being a top German
band, to becoming a worn out, dated, lame ordinarie German band... I'm
gonna see them in concert with Bruuuuuuuce Dickinson this weekend, and I
wish I'll change my mind about the "new" Helloween then! BTW, Bruce and
Michi has kinda similar voices... TOP of the line metal singers!

Well, since there are a few on the topic of sound of new music out
there, let me ask a question.

Is there anyone else out there that digs 7 Mary 3? I don't think I
have ever heard anyone mention the band on this list or TNMS. I went
out and bought their cd American Standard last month and it rocks. Or
at least it rocks a little more than Oasis, Pres of USA,...etc. And
to top it all off, I heard that the their drummer worshipped Mr. Peart
as a youngster. What more could you ask for?

         Later,

I know this has been discussed a lot lately, but I had to throw this
in. I usually don't like alternative, and I haven't bought any of it in a
long, long time. Last night I was dragged by a friend to go see the Bad
Religion concert, a band who I was very unfamiliar with.
Well, the concert was amazing. I had the most fun at a concert that
I've ever had. It was far more memorable than even the Queensryche concert,
and they are my #2 band. (I've never seen DT). That is the beauty of
alternative. It might not be good, but it is fun. And there is nothing
    wrong with having fun sometimes.

Oh yeah, one other thing. Today I am very pissed because I failed a
stupid driving test as a result of an overweight, overaged female (though
just barely) with an ugly haircut who has absolutely lost all love for her
job and takes it out on unsuspecting 16 year olds because they "aren't
responsible." If she is reading this, I WILL GET YOU!!!! Oh wait, she
would never be on here. I could see her going crazy for Michael Bolton.
    Stupid me.

I have read about 200+ 'jams with the RESPONSE at IBMMAIL 'thingy'. Get
used to it. Sometimes (depending on the amount of posts at any given
time, and if the listpric ( :) is working or not) we have gone for 5

I heard this song a week ago on the same channel, and I didn't care
for it. I was surprised, because the Edge never plays Rush. It was some
alterna-band, I think. They didn't say it was from the tribute album when I
heard it though. In my opinion, the singer sounded *exactly* like the
singer from Catherine Wheel. That is who I assumed it was.

O.K. Its unfair. All you guys live close to Akron and get
to post before me.:) I had to wait until I got home the next

    day.:)
so now I'm home. I will not bore you with what was
already said. I just have a few other things to say.

    1. thankyou Jack Thetgyi. I forgot to ask you if you wanted

any money for the pictures you took for me with JP. Mail me
and let me know. I would also like a copy of the picture we
had the Ibanez rep. take of you, me, and the other two guys
with Jp. I'm not good with names:)

    2. the new material. Well, all I can say is holy shit.
Raise the Knife kicks ass. There was another song that had
something about Gene Kelly in the lyric, John did not give
the name. It was a mellow kind of tune. I was impressed
with it. The soundtrack to the Sega pinball game. Well, I
garantee that you will play one aggresive game of pinball
with this soundtrack!!:) Its pretty crunchy and heavy.
    3. New JOhn Petrucci freak- My DAD!!! He flipped. My old
    man was majorly impressed!!!
4.I got to speak with John while he was signing my guitar and
Jack was snapping pictures!! I asked him about the band
coming to Ytsecon III. Well, John basically looked right at
me and said, "We know nothing about this. No one has said
anything to us at all. What are you talking about?" So I
explained and he said, "It could be a possibility, you
jammers' would probably have to write our management or
record label about it. Nice finish on your guitar by the
way, What does Ibanez call it. Blah, blah, and blah." My
question is how come there is all this talk about the band
being at the con when the BAND doesn't even know what I was
talking about. Boy, I felt like a real DUMBASS for asking
JOhn about something that the band does not know about. When
I thought they were supposedly supposed to know about it.
Maybe I misunderstood the previous posts about the Con. So
would someone either post or mail me and tell me whats going
on, or if I misunderstood the posts. If you don't believe me,
ask Jack Thetgyi. He overheard the entire conversation.

Helloween rules, but you have to get the old stuff...
If you have Keeper I (the one with the song Halloween in it) then
you MUST absolutely get keeper II. It is in the same style but
only better! then walls of jericho(sp?) is more raw, and fast and
less melodic but still brilliant. Personally I think Helloween did
their best with the two keepers... what came afterwards was just
indifferent... mainly because Kai Hansen (now in Gamma Ray)
left, and because Michael Kiske is now gone too (brilliant voice
    btw!!)
Well, there you go! hope that helped you, Pat!

better. However, we are off the point. Point is that WDADU and I&W were
pretty much written at the same time. Way back in the late 80's. Both
those albums are some of their best stuff and I am hoping that the stuff on
the new album will be in that style. I have heard that showdown will be
and that has WDADU/I&W written all over it. Try listening again and
tune out the vox and just listen to the music.

Okay, I've sat back and watched countless jams refer to bands of
"alternative" nature. I'm not sure if you can call most of them
"alternative." NOT the issue. I aggree, most of them are untalented,
but... DON'T MISTAKE LACK OF TALENT FOR GENIUS. I'm sure that, in some
form, they are talented. I just want a "jam" approval on Collective Soul.
I think these guys are pretty talented, and would like other opinions.
    Thank you...

Elliott: wow, cool, hadn't yet done my CRL research for you yet and
you're already considering them. :) If you get SLIP through them,
let me know how much it is; if the lines between me and CRL here ever
get cleared up ("Goddamn BellSouth morons" -- IRC folks know all about
this by now :)) I'll sign up.

Re: mid-Ytsecon. This beastie needs a new, cool name, one that's
easier to spin off the tongue like 'Ytsecon.'

How 'bout: MydseCon ? Or MytseCon? Keeps that all-important
'Y' in there and the "mid" part, too. :)

I'm really kicking myself for not going to JP's clinic here; I'd have
gotten that Majesty symbol question right. :)

    >buy either of the new ones or get an older one? Ok. here's my view on the Helloween catalog. Walls of Jehrico + Judas EP - This one has Kai Hansen singing, who is quite German (not meant as an insult - just as a point of reference.) You can tell by his diction. I have heard that his singing on Gamma Ray's "Land of the Free" is improved, but I couldn't tell you for sure.) He is gruff and also can scream. Music-wise it is pretty straight-forward thrashy-yet-talented metal. Song titles like "Metal Invaders" and "Heavy Metal is the Law" should tip you off. Probably not what you are looking for. Keeper of the Seven Keys Part One - This is the one with the song "Halloween." New singer Michael Kiske immediately brings visions of Geoff Tate circa "Rage" to mind. Once you get used to him the differences become more obvious. The music is more technical and less based solely on speed. Clear vocals. Song lyrics have improved and they start to develop a little quirkiness that sets them apart from the crowd, although people like to sceam, "Maiden Clone!!" - I would tend to disagree. The trademark twin guitar soloing (possibly stolen from Judas Priest, if you believe usenet) begins to establish more of a personal style. Keeper of the Seven Keys Part Two - Slightly better recorded than "Keepers 1" and there are some absolutely *killer* songs on here like "Eagle Fly Free," "March of Time," and "You Always Walk Alone." The more commercially-aimed "I Want Out" was on Headbanger's Ball quite often during this era. Low points, if you are of a serious nature, include some very, very silly songs, "Rise and Fall" and "Dr. Stein." Further establishes the very quirky nature to which I alluded earlier. Musicanship continues to be top-notch, and I would probably recommend this one for starters if I were asked. I don't much like the 13 and a half minute epic title track, but... I Want Out - Live -or- Live in the UK (import version) - Basically the same disc, but the import contains one extra song. The track selection disappoints me (Both "Rise and Fall," "I Want Out" and "Dr. Stein" are here, plus "A Little Time" and "Future World" from "Keepers 1." One track from "Walls" plus one more from "Keepers 2.") This disc does, however, demonstrate the live attraction of Helloween and shows Kiske's ability to pull off the acrobatics live. Also contains his impromptu version of "All Shook Up." Manages to sound like the King. According to Kiske, the set contained "Fast songs, slow songs, boring songs...a little something that should be right for you." Also marks the final appearance of Kai Hansen in Helloween. According to information I have read, this is due to ego feuding between the two guitarists, Michael Weikath and Hansen. Nowadays there are the dueling visions of both men, embodied in Helloween and Gamma Ray, respectively. Pink Bubbles Go Ape - First disc not released in the USA. New guitarist Roland Grapow. By far the weakest Helloween of the Kiske era. Some really stupid lyrics at times, and songs like "Heavy Metal Hampsters" (There is some irony going on - I am not trying to say there were serious, but it still sounds stupid.) and "Pink Bubbles Go Ape." Maybe the album cover gives up a clue; A woman about to eat a raw, dead fish whole on the front and some band members with fried eggs covering their eyes on the back. There are some good songs, "Kids of the Century" and "Somebody's Crying" come to mind, but overall a weak and inconsistant effort. Intro- duces us to Kiske softer side. Chameleon - Some people hate, I mean HATE, this record. I think, given the musical backround of the average Ytsejam participant, this may be the best for you. 71 minutes of music, so it's worth the import price. There is the trademark quirky song "Crazy Cat," the *very* wimpy "I Don't Want to Cry No More" and "Windmill," the rockers "First Time" and "Revolution Now," (not metal, this album, I must say.) and two absolute vocal spiritual showcases in "I Believe" and "Longing." I repeat, this is not a metal album. Very mature work, though. I have read on usenet that this was Weikath's attempt at commercial success, but it's just not cheesy. Appealing, but not overty. I like this disc very much. Last we see of Kiske. He later shows up on Hansen's Gamma Ray "Land of the Free" for a song or two. Also marks the last (and I am not trying to be funny here) of Ingo Schwitchenberg, the very competent drummer. He was replaced by an ex-Gamma Ray drummer and later commited suicide. Again, people blame Weikath. Master of the Rings - A return to the style of the "Keepers" era. New singer who is pretty good, but no Michael Kiske. Definitely not bad, though - a good choice for replacement, unlike say, the job Maiden did. This record has some very good, very speedy German-style power metal going on here. "Sole Survivor," "Where the Rain Grows" and "Why" rank with the best Helloween have done. There is, unfortunately, a really, really cheesy song "In the Middle of a Heartbeat" that is too lame for words. The rest is good. I have the import version, before it was released stateside (first one since the live one to be released domestically - no tours either :-( ....) As for the bonus tracks, I have only heard two of them because they were b-sides to the "Mr. Ego" single. (Import) The Time of the Oath - Continues in the style of "Master" and "Keepers." Once again there are a few tracks that just kick some serious ass. "Steel Tormentor," "The Time of the Oath" and "Mission Motherland" are just some seriously good songs. There is a trademark quirky song "Anything My Mama Don't Like" (kinda along the same lines of "Heavy Metal Hamsters" in theme), and the cheesy ballad, "Forever and One (Neverland)" the rest of the songs are quite good, and contain many passages of considerable musical talent and skill. Not a bad purchase, either.
