The Bay Area progressive rock scene has really been improving as of late. I
mentioned before a weekly prog rock radio show called Exposure has started up
and has recently expanded to two hours. It's on 90.5 KSJS, Sunday 9-11pm.
They play mostly prog-rock and only occasionally play prog-metal but, hey,
who cares? It's prog, man! Exposure has also began hosting some progressive
rock listening parties around the bay. There's even an entire section
devoted to progressive rock albums at CD Warehouse. So, fellow Bay Area
jammers, tune in to Exposure. It's two hours of paradise for prog rock fans!

It is through this show that I have been "exposed", so to speak, to a whole
new slew of prog rock bands. Here are some of the ones I've liked:

Leger De Main- This is an incredible prog band featuring a female vocalist.
The songs I've heard by them are very complex at times, and melodic at
others. They remind me of Rush, but more complex. I've already sent for
    their CD. Highly recommended.

Anglagard- This is a Swedish group that plays very medieval prog. The band
features a flutist and lyrics in Swedish, but fret not: most of their stuff
is instrumental. Their style consists of a dominant melody with all sorts of
things going on underneath. They use dynamics a lot. I have "Hybris" on CD.
     This album is highly recommended.

Magellan- This is a Magna Carta band that I know has been mentioned before,
but I just picked up their first album, "Hour of Restoration" on cassette out
of a bargain bin for 25 cents. It was, and most definitely will be, the best
25 cents I've ever spent in my life!!! This album blew me away. Much better
than "Impending Ascension", IMHO. While the vocal melodies and some of the
lyrics were just average, the composition and the complexity of this album is
    simply awesome. Highly recommended.

Some other interesting newer prog bands:

Gerard: I've only heard one song by them, but this Japanese band plays some
intense instrumentals. One of the better Japanese bands I've heard.

Maximum Indifference: This is a local Bay Area band that plays some pretty
    catchy prog. Not bad.

Anekdoten: Another Swedish band. On their latest album, "Nucleus", (I've
heard two songs off of it), they use very heavy guitar and some experimental
    keyboard voices. Very interesting.

Industrial Soup: prog-comedy? Industrial Soup is the Weird Al of prog, with
songs like "Tiny Bladder", featuring spoken lyrics like "Okay, we're standing
in line at the football game. And why are we standing in line at the
football game? Because we just had 7 beers before halftime!! And why?!
Because our bladder only holds 3 beers and those other 4 beers are trying to
persuade them out of our system. And right now they're being quite
    persuasive, I might add..."

Athena: While I have yet to hear this band, they're supposed to be the
closest thing to Dream Theater out there. Dream Theater clones, so to speak.

Some other cool bands: The Mathematicians, Finch, FM, Area(This band's got a
cool vocalist), Saga, Rattlemouth, Brain Dance, Spock's Beard, Samla Mama's
Manna(This band is crazy!), Solaris, Aufklarung, Ars Nova, Kenso, Pekka
Pohjola, Deus Ex Machina(Haven't heard them, but they're supposed to be
    really innovative), and French TV.

All these bands, while all good, none of them have come to par with Dream
Theater in my book. Which goes to show that Dream Theater is still the best
    band in existence.

I owe the Jam a great big apology, and Damon in particular. I was
feeling pretty punchy that night and overreacted to Damon's overreaction.
to make it fair: I'd have decked Mort too. :) But in all seriousness, I'm
sorry for being insulting and for acting like a boor about Jam content.
I'm certainly not sensitive enough about it to want to unsubscribe... we
just get a little carried away sometimes, ya know?

In other news, I wanted to thank you all for JUST ABOUT selling
out Antiquities. I've got about a dozen reservations that I'm holding for
people who need some time, and maybe a dozen more open to sell, and
that'll be all she wrote. The sold-out announcement should arrive in
about a week's time at this rate. Kick ass!! :)

WDATU 2nd shipment- finally it's waiting for me at the UPS
building. About damn time. Sorry about the delay in this. I'll be
shipping these out with much speed. SFAM's 500-CD run is actually nearly
done... it's finished being manufactured and the printing plant has
already done the liners, they're just doing the assembly and will send
the CDs back to me. I expect to wait 11-12 days for them, but I'm hoping
they will be done by Cinco de Mayo. Critical Mass is currently being
manufactured. It will take some time, but these things do.

In other news, Scoobacca is one member smaller as of last night.
We had to let go of our singer, Mikey (from the CD inserts as Herman Jr.
or Hairball). It was an amicable parting, but the other members of the
band are still very bummed about having to do it... Mike just wasn't
planning on making the band his life like the other members were. We
understood and did what we had to do. I wanted to wish him luck here on
the Jam because I think his girlfriend is subscribed and will tell him
(we wanted to give him some time away from us for now so he knew we
weren't "rubbing it in" or anything) our good wishes. In the meantime,
we've found another possible singer, a guy named Drew. If he doesn't work
out, then anyone from the Jam who lives in this area is welcome to
audition (assuming you're ready to commit to a band as a full-time job).
I'll let you all know. The DT tie-in here is that Mike and I, along with
his buddy Hans and my friend Dave (from the Cygnus liner) were going to
do some of the DT covers for the Reflections of Reality project. We had
planned to do Silent Man (of course), Lifting Shadows, Don't Look Past
Me, Metropolis, and Scarred. Now it looks like I'll need to work with
someone else on these. Any locals are welcome to join me on this. We can
change the songs. I also know Take The Time, The Mirror, Lie, Caught in a
Web, Innocence Faded, and Pull Me Under on bass, though Scoobacca itself
is covering PMU for the ROR compilation.

Take it easy all! It's my 22nd birthday April 30th, so I'll think
about y'all while I party! The band gave me a big ol' bottle of Jaeger to
    celebrate with.

    Ed-
I agree with you on the Promised Land. Actually, many people believe that
Rage for Order is a concept album as well. Check out the lyrics on RFO, and
think about it. Lots of computer stuff, artificial intelligence, and of
course the love songs and a broken relationship (walk in the shadows,
london, etc..) Yeah, Promised land is like a start to finish, "I've been
    awakened" CD.
Starts off with "I Am I," someone thinking he has his shit together, and
then, at the end of the CD, "Someone Else" lets him know that he is now not
what he thought he was. Excellent CD
About Savatage....I've really never heard them. About 7 years ago I heard
Hall of the Mountain King (?) and can't remember a damn thing!!!

You guys seem to have forgoten Marillions " Misplaced Childhood ". I think that this is one of the best concept albums ever written, pick it up. Oh yeah I think just about any Mid eighties glam bands wrote concept albums, all songs were about having sex ( not that there is anything wrong with that). Wild Koba. I think a ytse tribute would be great. I guess I am going to start practicing more frequently. I think that during the ytsecon we should try and rent some studio space and let all the jammers jam. Anybody agree. Be gentle on Mojoman, I can attest to his rough weekend. He may flame people, but he really is a nice guy at heart, just ask his lovely girlfriend ( Ihave to be polite to her, she introduced me to my fiancee ). Anyway I have said enough for now, but when the time comes I WILL SPEAK AGAIN.

Just wondering how many athletes are on this list, because there sure seem to be enough prog fans in sports. In one half-hour episode of ESPN's "Baseball Tonight," Chris Berman threw out two - count 'em, two - prog references. You know how Berman (the Geddy Lee of sportscasting, IMHO) loves to give players nicknames, right? Well, tonight, he made reference to Rafael "Emerson Lake and" Palmiero and Mark Carreon "My Wayward Son."

Well now that the jam has cooled off a little, and everything's happy happy joy joy, I thought I'd post a bout what's been on my mind lately...

Is it just me, or does CD sound like Elmer Fudd on LFaGA whem he sings "lying bleeding in the dark..."... It sounds to me like "Lying bweeding.."...

As far as the double CD goes, I know it's been said by many, but just so everybody gets the picture, they could release 2 seperate CD's... and if EW's still doesn't like the idea they could realeas one after the other... say 3-4 months between the 2 (I guess it would depend on how succesful the first one is)... and besides, by sending the petition we're not being annoying to the record company or DT... we're making the record company realize that DT has a lot of dedicated fans and are worth worrying about. I mean record companies aren't stupid, they know that bands like DT (Rush,QR,etc...) grow slowly, but in they end, you can be pretty sure that each album will sell decently...they have enough bands they can exploit:)

In the end, no matter what we say, I'm sure DT and EW will do what they think is best... we're just letting them know what we think...

One last thing, anybody who lives in Miami or around that area (E-man?), check out Heroes del Silencio. I believe they're gonna play there some time in the next couple of weeks. They're not prog, but they put on a helluva a show. They're just one of those bands that leave you saying 'Damn, that was a fookin' kick-ass concert' for a week or two. They're just awesome, check'em out...

Hold up. I just got a full copy of the Ronnie Scott's show and the songs are quite different from what shows up on Uncovered on ACOS. Did they do multiple shows here? It's weird 'cuz James' comments b/t songs are the same and he laughs at the same times, but his vocals are much different and the band throws in some different improvs. I'm sure this must have been discussed before, but I apparently missed it. Someone let me know what's going on...

Hi. Basically everything I wanted to say about the two CD idea has been said. People have brought up what GNR did w/ the "Use Your Illusion" albums as an example of what DT should do. I read an interview with Slash who said that he regrets putting out the two CDs. He would have rather put out one album of just absolutely kick-ass stuff instead of, to paraphrase him, two albums of mediocre material. I would rather see DT put out one unbelievable album and pay the extra $25 to Mike Bahr for the novelty stuff. Just my opinion. Speaking of opinions, people sure have been pretty vocal about them lately. Of course that is what this list was designed for, but some have been more tactful than others. Just remember, we are all on this list for one reason: DT. Let's try and focus on what we have in common, not who flamed who, who said what, etc. If someone were to print out the last couple of jams for JP or MP at their clinics, what do you think they would think of us? Sorry if this came off as some can't-we-all-just-get-along speech, but I personally am getting tired of the name-calling and the shoe-staring. Not that I haven't succumbed to it myself. But I promise to be better about it if the rest of us will too. Thanks.

Ugh ... just read like 10 jams ....

First, about the flames, Syrinx said it best:

    SHUT THE FUCK UP

This list isn't alt.flame. If you like flames go there cuz that's all they fuckin do. Its hard enough trying to keep up with a huge mailbox of errors because of people cancelling accts and shit, but when it gets bigger because 6 jams go out a day and half of them are "you suck , no you suck" It gets really annoying. IF by some miracle I get some more free time and this does keep up we will go moderated again. No, I am not using this as a threat, just trying to make my life and people who are actually interested in DTC happy.

Spams: We're working on it :)

    The Petition:

Its dead. Ibanez said that management won't allow a 2 disc set and in 48 hours we had about 180 people sign up which definately isn't gonna get us 2 CDs anyways. As for doing a GNR use ur illusion thing. I think that would kick ass, but at the same time will the contract allow this? If anyone finds out that this would be possible, then I will put it back up, but for now its dead.

    That's all for now

Hey, y'all - Well, my modem crapped out on me again and my latest retrieval of E-mail resulted in about 1,836 Jams - all of which I deleted, except for the latest one (#1497), so I have no idea what's going on - therefore, very little DT content - my sincere apologies.

The Jam (as far as I know) hasn't had the pleasure of participating in a survey for quite a while - so, if you don't mind, I'd like to conduct one for my own personal interest and maybe yours, too...

Item #1: Who do you prefer? Dane Sonnier or Wally Farkas? (Galactic Cowboys) My response/opinion: Farkas is to Sonnier what Vai was to Satriani - the student/understudy turned master. Farkas

Item #2: Favorite Galactic Cowboys album: Galactic Cowboys, Space In Your Face, or Machine Fish? My response/opinion: GC made quite an improvement when they were dumped by Geffen - Geffen or not, Alan Doss did an excellent job producing Machine Fish, and I think it's, by far, the best sounding and best produced album. Granted, I'm not quite as familiar with the first two, but, from what I've heard of them (and they are great, also) Machine Fish takes it for me. MF

Item #3: To those of you who caught Sepultura opening for Ozzy in recent months: Did you dig them? Or did they just SUCK?!? My response/OPINION!!!: I have never suffered like that through the duration of an opening band's show...and I've seen Trixter. It was almost painful - heck, ditch the 'almost' - it was downright painful! And, I wasn't the only one. About halfway through their set, the audience (Phoenix-April 13th) started chanting "Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy!" I've NEVER heard that before. ("Bloody 'orrible!" - Eric Idle, Monty Python). SUCKED!

Item #4: Being a drummer, this one is of particular interest to me - and to a lot of you, judging by past Jams: Portnoy's drum sound - which do you prefer? WDADU, IAW, Awake, or ACOS? My response/opinion: For myself, I would choose the ACOS sound. For DT, however, I think the sound utilized in the recording of IAW best fits DT's music. But, who am I to criticize arguably the world's greatest drummer? IAW

Item #5: Finally, who is your favorite? Portnoy or Peart? My response/opinion: I tend to prefer Portnoy, but maybe that's because I prefer DT over Rush, but not by a whole lot. I would love to see those guys engage in a drum duel, if they tour together - that would almost be too much for any drummer to stand.

I'd also like for those interested to send me a list of their 10 favorite bands (go ahead and include DT, but, I think we all know who will come out on top). My response/opinion: (In no particular order) DT, King's X, Van Halen, Rush, GC, Queensryche, Extreme, Saigon Kick, Mr. Big, and Yes.

Send entries to: syoung@primenet.com with 'Re: Survey' in the Subject. I'll be accepting entries until May 31, at 11:59 pm. Then, I'll tally the votes and try to post the results on June 1 (my wife's birthday).

DT's new disc due out in October? Did I hear right? Has anybody heard the CD Burnin' For Buddy (a Buddy Rich tribute CD that features Peart)? What's happening with the DT watches?

Thanks for your participation and refrain from flaming - wow, say THAT ten times fast.

    >OK...it has been a year or so since I started the thread about how loud and >unbalanced DT was when they appeared here in Portland, Oregon. >... >Anyone that disagrees with me is....yep...an asshole(tm)

Well, at least I'm not an asshole* yet, because I agree with you, Warren. I, too, saw them when they came through Portland, and even posted a similar complaint here on the 'jam after their last stop during the Awake tour. I got a few replies, including one from Hairball, saying how live sound situations are extremely hard to control. Personally, I think all the problems would be solved if you turn a little knob labelled 'VOLUME' a little bit counter-clockwise...it would help a lot.

Incidentally, did you see them when they came through during the I&W tour? I still have fantastic memories of that being one of my all-time incredible concert experiences, mainly because my appreciation for DT jumped up exponentially when seeing them perform these incredible feats I wasn't sure they could pull off live. When I brought a friend with me to the Awake concert, I kept telling him how he'll be blown away and how cool they are, only to be really disappointed with the sound quality. Was the sound that bad when they came during the I&W tour? I've wondered if I just look back on that concert with rose- colored glasses, or if they really did get it right that time.

Anyway, here's hoping I don't meet any assholes* when I go to their next concert here...<g>

P.S. Thanks to everyone who helped me when I was on IRC briefly Saturday night! I was SubCon. Hope to see more people there some time!
