Since I belong to several mailing lists, I felt compelled to share this. Over the past
week on the Marillion list, many people were discussing getting tickets for shows for
others on the list or meeting each other for the first time before/after the show.
meanwhile, on the DT list, it's the Hatfields and McCoys. C'mon, I'm on the mailing to
list to learn things I didn't know (i.e. WDATU) and to give my .02 when it may assist
someone else. Hey, it's just a thought.
Regarding the MAGNA CARTA releases, I knwo that many chains can special order them you
just have to ask. When I first heard of the label, a local Record Town store was able
to order several titles for and I got them within a week.
If you have any trouble, give me a message. I do special orders for all the Magna Carta
titles ($15.50 each, plus actual postage charges).

Hey All-
While we wait for DT's new one (in October, right?), let's shoot the shit
about some concept albums, eh? Here are some of my favorites:
Queensryche's Operation:Mindcrime,
Iron Maiden's 7th Son of a 7th Son,
David Bowie's (ongoing) Nathan Adler Diarys, 1. Outside,
Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans,
Voivod's Dimension Hatross, (I heard Nothingface is a concept CD also),
Steve Vai's Passion and Warfare (instrumental concept album!),
Fates Warning's Awaken the Guarian,
Rush's Farewell to Kings, 2112, Cygnus x-1, and Hemispheres.
What else have we out there??

Does anyone have any info on this newest release by Glass Hammer? It was
released on Dec 1, 1995, but I've never seen it in any stores. What's the
deal??

In response to Greg's post about tackling compound time signatures.. I
have a suggestion.
Let's say it's in 11/8. All you have to do is break it up. Play 2
sections of 4/8 (or 2/4 to get technical), and then add 3 more notes
after that.
Believe me.. this is a VERY basic approach to playing compound time
signatures, but it works. If you have an 11/8 passage, look at each 11
notes individually. Group the first 4 together, learn them, then group
the next 4, learn them, then the next 3, learn them, then combine the
first 8, then all 11.
Remember one thing however. Playing the notes is one thing. Putting accents
and getting the feel for the line is another. In a compound meter, the
accents can fall pretty much anywhere the "composer" wishes. Learn the
notes, then once you can play them without racking your brain, go for the
line as a whole and add the feel..

Subject: weakest songs first on DT albums?
Message-ID: <199604282312.TAA26072@zork.tiac.net>
Hey guys,
I'm not sure if any of you have noticed, but I think DT has a habit
of putting weaker songs towards the beggining of albums. Now before you go
and flame me, hear me out. For example, I&W starts out with Pull Me Under
and Another Day. Now I've had two friends borrow my I&W and return it after
listening to the first two songs. Both were metal heads who hated Another
Day. I've heard several negative comments to 6:00 and Caught in a Web on
TNMS and the Queensryche newsgroup and I can't help but reply with, "Listen
to the rest of the album! Check out Scarred and Voices!"
Also with CD's now a days people tend to just throw in the CD and
listen to the first song. Does anybody know who makes the decision of the
song order on albums? Is it the band or the label? Of course this is all IMHO.
BTW, there's a review of Shadow Gallery's "Carved in Stone" in a
guitar magazine I found. It goes like this...
Shadow Gallery, Carved in Stone (Magna Carta)
2 little guitar symbol thingies out of 5.
"For modern prog-rockers who can't get enough of Dream Theater and
Queensryche, the six-piece Shadow Gallery has all the standard art-metal
accouterments: Dungeons 'n' dragons lyrics, odd-time meters, and Yngwie-like
solos from shredder Brendt Allman. There's nothing innovative here, but if
you're dying for some big, bombastic rock here in the rather spartan '90s,
this'll do ya. "
Hmmm, funny how they don't mention the beautiful piano and synth
pieces and melodies, "shredder" Brendt Allmans spin-tingling passages, the
great vocals, and thought provoking lyrics. Funny how they see lyrics based
on art, a spy in WWII, and somebody going to their homeland as being
Dungeons and Dragons lyrics.
Oh well, they go on to give great reviews to Seven Mary 3's
"American Standard", which sounds like every other band on the radio today
and truly is an American Standard.
And they called Shadow Gallery un-innovative?

You mean the solo section during LTL? Yeah, they left that part out. I guess
since it was towards the end of the album and they were so tired with all
their hard transcribing they figured they'd take a rest ;). 11/8 can be
counted as, "1-2-3-4, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2". (7+5)/8? I think that is the end of
the Metropolis instrumental, but they only put that there for continuity. I
haven't really figured that part out yet much myself, anybody else have any
suggestions??

I wholeheartedly agree. The thing that gets me, is every time I try to
argue with someone about this, they come back arguing that Alternative
musicians are just as good as, say, DT. And how do they support it? By
throwing in Hendrix. It's always like "oh, well just look at Hendrix, he
couldn't read music, but look how good a musician HE was". Well, for one
thing, I personally don't think Hendrix WAS a good musician (original,
innovative, sure, but a good musician, I dunno about that ... maybe it's
just because I don't like bluesey stuff). It's just as stupid as the old
"Without the Beatles, Black Sabbath, etc., such and such wouldn't exist" (I
always get that one from my brother about Dream Theater).
And it explains why DT aren't too popular. QR and Rush have become pretty
successful and popular gradually, but DT are another level above those two
bands in terms of complexity (neither DT nor Rush have a song that comes
close to TTT in that respect, granted with Rush having 3 band members, it's
a bit more difficult for them). I knew TTT was complex, but after taking a
look at a MIDI transcription of it, I found it was even more intricate than
I thought, and the keyboard parts are harder to play than I thought.

hi, I must say that in backing of Michael Bradley's point if we start annoying the company thaen they won't take us seriously. What we did for ACoS was really cool, and rather impressive, but let's not get ahead of ourselves(or dt for that matter). Again this is no sort of flame, but I think that this would be more benficial in the long run if we did not pettiion at this time. DT is in the position to make it bigger than ever before and so we should allow them to take a natural step rather than try to sway them one way or another. Think about it, if DT is successful in in proving themselves to their label, then they are in a great position for a 2 disc set, or a compilation disc(s) or a live re-release or whatever. They don't have the (mainstream) fan backing that bands like the pumpkins did when they released their 2 disc set. Don't get me wrong, I've been overly impressed at the dedication of the jammers of there in my 2 years being on the jam. But DT needs to try and extend to the general public. That's just my 2 cents. Jam-on
ps: Damon, I've got your back on that one, not that I agree with it(flaming) but way to flame!! pss:Yes Mike Bahr, everyone loves you, don't even worry about it.

While reading all about people wanting DT to put out a double CD set, I am reminded of Guns and Roses. When they released 'Use your Illusion' I and II that was supposed to be a double CD, but they released them both separately so their fans could get a new album if they wanted to for far less than having to buy both at the same time. Maybe this can be your answer to getting two CD's out of DT.

no, actually, in the spirit of the dt and qr debate. has anyone here checked out the ryche rom yet? it's very interesting, but i find it really hard to manuever in the game. anyone made any headway with the thing? i think the graphics are pretty neato, but i'm hoping to find that magical bonus song i've heard oh so much about.
for the record, i am a big fan of both. dt has the edge at the moment, but i think that degarmo and wilton are fuckin wizzes.
boy, it just seems like i've given petrucci no respect. i like prince over him, zappa, satch. man, what an asshole i am! but folks, let's get this straight, i dig petrucci too. i think he writes almopst better than anyone of the guys mentioned above (except maybe degarmo), and he can sure as hell play like a bitch, too. in da house.
ummm.....damon (yo- what up punk!). do you have a transcription of the ltl key part? i'm pretty sure i know the intro (haven't tried to play the key solo though), but it's that wfs re-surfacing at the end that KILLS me. no matter how hard i try, i haven't been able to figure out that friggin bass km played over the melody.
oh well. whatever.
